Human Television @ Rare, NYC | pics

Human Television @ Rare

I'm listening to the new Human Television album as I write this - I still love it. Maybe they didn't soundcheck, or maybe Rare is a hard place to play - it seemed too loud and I could barely hear the vocals (neither could Steve) - not sure the band could hear each other either. So, it was a sadly disappointing show last night (April 14, 2006), but it was also the first time I'd seen them - I have nothing to compare it to. Jerry was at their recent Mercury Lounge show and attributes some of the awkwardness to the band not having played together in a while.

Human Television @ Rare

From Rare it was off to Bowery for Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

Pitchfork vs Intonation vs Lollapalooza

"Pitchfork 'wanted complete creative control, and Intonation had worked hard to create a brand for itself,' Intonation co-founder Jonathan Singer says. 'There's been a tremendous amount of confusion (to the public). We didn't contractually preclude them from doing their own festival. We just didn't know that it would happen.'" Clap Your Hands Say Yeah @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC | pics

CYHSY @ Bowery Ballroom

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's biggest critics always point to the bands unaffectionate live show. I've never been on the side of the haters, but I'll even admit that I witnessed a whole new Alec Ounsworth last night (April 14, 2006) at Bowery Ballroom in NYC. Maybe it was alcohol that loosened up the otherwise shy frontman. Maybe constant touring has him more comfortable on the stage (most of the negative reviews came after the new band was hurled into the spotlight). Whatever it was, I felt like Alec and band were happy to be there, and appreciative of both the crowd and openers. Alec even jokingly introduced the third song as "the third song".

CYHSY @ Bowery Ballroom

One of my first distinct memories of CYHSY was their show (a WHOLE year ago) at Crash Mansion for Nora's birthday party. The band went on LATE, and the small crowd, who stuck around, was having their own little satan-said-dance party. The band and the crowd were equally into it. A lot of that energy was lost post-Pitchfork. Like all big buzz bands, arms-crossed specators take over the shows for a while. Then the bands with mainstream appeal hit frat-house status, and the rowdier craigslist-ticket-purchasing alcohol-buying, not-so-often-show-going crowd moves in. Hipsters complain, but the crowd reverts to a state closer to the original. The band feels it. People are dancing again. Not all of CYHSY's songs make me want to dance, but last night, at times at least, people were moving.

CYHSY @ Bowery Ballroom

They didn't start playing until almost midnight. The show ended at 1:00. I'm bad at figuring stuff like that out, but according to Eric, they played every song on the album. The encore was three songs, and it was the encore that I loved the most. First they came out and played "Clap Your Hands" - yeah, that's the carnival barker intro that you start skipping over by the fifth time you've heard the album. It was awesome - I think everyone in the place was smiling. Then came a new song ("Me and You Watson") that has me convinced their next album will be as good, or better, than their first one. They closed with "Heavy Metal". It may have even been the same exact setlist as the March 8th show that's streaming over at NPR.

Actually they're calling it pretentious themselves: The Mission of Burma wiki "will also double at the spot where we will reveal 8 songs from band's new album 'The Obliterati' in a most pretentious manner. This coincides with the 'A Time To Punctuate' subscription series that is being made available by Matador Records - an even more pretentious record label."

Pitchfork gets Os Mutantes | Secret Guests?

AND: I have NO IDEA if this is true, but "sandra" left a comment in my previous Os Mutantes post that says "my sources tell me there are going to be incredible surprise guest performances" (at the Webster Hall show). David Byrne maybe? Anyone have any info? Are they just trying to sell more tickets?

"Do I have to die to be popular?" [Nikki Sudden to Metro Times]

SWELL MAPS
Swell Maps

Nikki Sudden (July 19, 1956 – March 26, 2006) born Adrian Nicholas Godfrey in London, was a prolific British singer-songwriter and guitarist. He co-founded the post-punk band Swell Maps whilst attending Solihull School in Solihull. Following the band's break-up in 1980 he started a solo career, as well as releasing records with Dave Kusworth as the The Jacobites." [Wikipedia]

Nikki Sudden "Cult British musician Nikki Sudden died Sunday (March 26) after a show the night before at New York's Knitting Factory, Billboard.com has learned. He was 49." [CNN]

Nikki was out for drinks with photographer Andrew Bicknell a few days before he died. Andrew posted a picture from that night to his Flickr account.

Knitting Factory was Nikki's last show, but it was just one of three NYC dates he played during his final days.

Punkcast was at the cake shop show: "...Of course, many wanted to hear Swell Maps classics, and he obliged with several including their very first single 'Read With Seymour'. I've seen Nikki a few times over the last few years, but this was definitely the best, with him playing intimately for an attentive audience that was well familiar with his material. It is poetic irony that I suspect would give him a chuckle that his cause of death was reportedly an enlarged heart...." [PUNKCAST EVEN TAPED THE CAKE SHOP SHOW]

NIKKI SUDDEN & EVAN DANDO @ KNITTING FACTORY | MARCH 25, 2006 (cred)
Nikki Sudden

New York Night Train reports on Fat Baby & Knitting Factory: "Last night a friend of mine sent me a digital picture of Evan Dando on stage with Nikki Sudden's band at the Knitting Factory (see top of page). As the picture came through on my phone, a member of Vietnam told me a bit about their last minute show opening for Sudden at the Fat Baby two nights before – how they backed him up on a song and how he looked near-death..." [New York Night Train]

Nikki Sudden The Village Voice has reports from the Knitting Factory too: ".....Sudden played to the scarcely two dozen people just the same as if he had been performing for the sold-out capacity crowd squeezed in upstairs to see flavor-of-the-week the Gossip. Overdose rumors abound on the Internet—that morass of misinformation—but the medical examiner's office has yet to determine the cause of death. What is for certain is that the 49-year-old singer-guitarist passed at some time shortly after the show...." [Village Voice]

Nikki Sudden One new fan Amy randomly made it to the Knitting Factory show "...I was not a fan until Saturday, March 25, my birthday. Early morning, March 26, a friend and I stopped off at the Knitting Factory before going home. Not knowing who was playing, I asked the bouncers if it was worth going into the club and one of them chimed in enthusiastically, 'the set is almost finished but you should check out the band playing on the ___ floor. Great sound.' So we went in and sat almost directly in front of Nikki Sudden (hence I feel the need to share this). There was someone on the side of the stage videotaping the set. We heard two songs - I think the last song was Sympathy for The Devil. Midway through the first song I looked over at my friend and said what a great way to end the night - their amazing." Mystery Jets @ Mercury Lounge

Mystery Jets seem good. I just don't enjoy their music that much. I wanted to like them when I heard them making all this well orchestrated noise on stage, but the songs ultimately just left me bored. J properly described them as a 'prog' band which isn't a label you'd normally associate with a band so heavily endorsed by NME.

Noisettes and Land of Talk played before them (March 24, 2006). After the show I booked over to Love is All at Knitting Factory. Land of Talk and Love is All were my favorites of the night (Land of Talk Talk Talk...).

King Dork | Litzkrieg Bop Blog Book Tour | Part 4

Like Gawker, Stereogum, and Largehearted Boy before me, I thought this King Dork blog book tour thing was a cool idea. The following guest post is part 4 of a 5 blog series by Andrew Krucoff...

King Dork Blog Book Tour

Frank Portman (Dr. Frank of the Mr. T Experience) is the author of King Dork, a story that revolves around Tom Henderson (a.k.a. King Dork, Chi-mo, Hender-fag, and Sheepie) who is a typical American high school loser until he discovers his deceased father's copy of The Catcher in the Rye, which will change the world as he knows it. He soon finds himself in the middle of several interlocking conspiracies and at least half a dozen mysteries involving dead people, naked people, fake people, ESP, blood, a secret code, guitars, monks, witchcraft, the Bible, girls, the Crusades, a devil head, and rock and roll. And it all looks like it's just the tip of a very odd iceberg of clues that may very well unravel the puzzle of his father's death and reveal the secret to attracting semi-hot girls. Early reviews are here and here. Welcome to the King Dork blog book tour, previous stops include Gawker, Stereogum, and Largehearted Boy.

::: First, watch the book's unofficial video "trailer" (YouTube) and listen to Dr. Frank read a passage about the main character's step-father who is affectionately called "Little Big Tom" (MP3).

Now we move on to the musically-reclined Q&A section, but unlike previous days, we literally mean one Q and one A in this case. Don't worry though, it's a doozy one-two suckerpunch.

In several of the book's scenes, high school sophomore Tom Henderson (a.k.a. King Dork, Chi-mo, Hender-fag, and Sheepie) watches horror movies with the tv volume down but the stereo up. Creature Features include: Invasion of the Body Snatchers with Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy), Rosemary's Baby with Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, and Evil Dead II with Rattus Norvegicus. Oddly, you don't mention any such connections in the book, but do you have some Wizard of Oz/Dark Side of the Moon-esque revelations to share?

You know, I didn't actually test this out. But let's try. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath with Rosemary's Baby, starting now!

Beginning "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" on credits. Ozzy starts singing precisely when Ruth Gordon's name appears. Coincidence?

Man, I never realized till now how much that dual warped-guitar solo sounds just like you're going up in an elevator to look at an apartment. Spooky.

Mia Farrow's smile is really freaking me out in a whole new way.

During the line "God knows as your dog knows," Guy makes a joke about marijuana and slaps Rosemary's butt on the word "dog."

Oh wow, Guy and Mr. Nicklas are trying to lift the mysterious piece of furniture just as "National Acrobat" begins.

And now Rosemary and Guy are starting to do it at the precise point where the guitar solo begins.

This post-solo riffage actually works great as a soundtrack to all the guys rolling out the rug and bringing in the furniture.

I'll say this: the laundry room scene is way more touching with "Fluff" playing over it. You'd almost think Rosemary and Terri Gionnoffrio are going to start to make out or something. They are looking at each other very tenderly. But no, now Rosemary is making out with Guy again.

Christ, how long is this song? OK, now it's over.

Another great moment: the "Sabbra Cadabra" riffs kick in just as Minnie and Roman come walking down the street.

Ruth Gordon is onscreen quite a bit now: it almost sounds like the song is about her. Is there some kind of Ozzy and Maude thing going on here?

Now it's "Killing Yourself to Live" and I have this sudden mental image of Chuck Klosterman. Unfortunate. Yet it is so cute how Rosemary can't quite manage to cut her meat while she discusses Catholicism with Roman Castavets.

Now Rosemary is taking off her stocking, but nothing special happens during "Who Are You?" In other words, she's not getting the Ruth Gordon treatment at all.

Another nice scene: we hear "everyone just gets on top of you/the pain begins to eat your pride" as Rosemary turns to watch Guy walk away after learning that Donald Baumgart has gone blind. She looks exactly like a woman whose pain has just begun to eat her pride. Now Hutch is gesturing with his pipe and it almost looks as if he is saying "looking for today" over and over. Guy taps the calendar in the outro. (Get it? Calendar - "Looking for Today"... Kind of heavy handed.)

The dream sequence actually works pretty well with "Spiral Architect" but the album ends about halfway through it, just as Rosemary's clothes are being removed. If you stop there, it's kind of an uplifting ending. "I look upon my earth and feel the warmth and know that it is good." It has a "love is all around, you're gonna make it after all" vibe. We never get to the guy in the devil suit and "this is no dream this is really happening."

I'm not sure what to make of all this, but I'm sticking with the theory that Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is a coded audio mash note to Ruth Gordon. Check it out yourself: it's pretty obvious once you notice it.

Willie Nile revival | Living Room show

"A revival of the Willie's is happening right before our eyes. Willie Nelson released his gay cowboy song on itunes a couple weeks ago and now Willie Nile has released an album February 21. I went to Mercury Lounge last night to see this rock icon perform...." [One leg of a tripod]

(more music streaming @ NPR)

Willie NileIt was the recent Mercury Lounge show, and a Housing Works benefit show around the same time, that got rock 'icon' Willie Nile on my radar. Check out the above MP3s and the below celebrity endoresements....

Bono, Lou Reed, and Little Steven are all vocal fans. Jakob Dylan appears on his new CD.

Willie NileWillie "has recorded and played live with The Who, Ringo Starr, Lucinda Williams, Roger McGuinn, Barenaked Ladies, Tori Amos, Richard Thompson, The Clash, Elvis Costello, The Pretenders, Loudon Wainwright, The Band, John Mellencamp, and many others. Several bands and musicians have recorded his songs including the Hooters, Richie Havens, and Curtis Stigers." [Willie Nile fan page]

On April 26th, he's playing the Living Room in NYC (with Rich Pagano and Jimmy Vivino as his band I think) (and Kieran Mcgee as opener). It's been on sale for a while. Maybe it hasn't sold out yet because he "was an up-and-coming singer-songwriter in the 1980s, but he never really arrived, and then he mostly disappeared for a long time......isn’t really very original.....is a poser on the politically conscious tip... he does a song called 'The Day I Saw Bo Diddley in Washington Square' and fails to have any actual Bo Diddley in it..." (this all from a GOOD Popmatters review)

Nile also plays MA on the 26th. Check his tour dates page for more info.

UPDATE: Teddy continued the show outside Avalon

Just saw your post on the show at the Avalon. I was there as well and can without a doubt say that it was one of the strangest show nights I've been to in a while. After he got kicked off stage, Teddy took his guitar and went to play an acoustic set out on the sidewalk. That got shut down with what seemed like the threat of arrest if he continued. Anyway, my friend got a shot of him on the street, so I'm sending along. - Erin

Lifetime still cool | playing Court Tavern

On March 31st I posted that Pitchfork posted that Lifetime said they are still cool even though they signed to a label owned by Fall Out Boy. On April 1st Punknews posted a letter from Lifetime guitarist (and Kid Dynamite guitarist and Paint it Black vocalist AND VEGAN) Dan Yemin. Here it is reposted....

-----

Dan yemin A lot of people have been upset by the news that Lifetime has signed to Fueled by Ramen/DecayDance records. From what I can tell, most of the uproar is based on people jumping to conclusions or making inaccurate assumptions. I'm flattered that Lifetime and Paint It Black are important enough to people that they can get this upset about who puts out our records. I'm also really happy that people care what we believe in and whether or not we're sincere. This is punk rock and those things are important. I totally understand that people feel like they have some ownership of theband and the music because it's played a large part in their lives, and I'm gratified and flattered by that.

I'm concerned that some people seem to be questioning the legitimacy of Paint It Black because of this. I wish I could be punk enough to say that I don't care what people think, but that would be dishonest. I'm more than a little upset over some of the vicious things people have said on message boards.

I can honestly say that Lifetime hasn't done anything that I'm ashamed of, but I understand that people have questions, and I'm more than willing to answer them. I want to encourage people to contact me here at our myspace page and feel free to ask whatever questions that you might have about what any of this news means for Lifetime or for Paint It Black. Just be sure to put "Lifetime" in the subject heading.

I'll give you the FAQ to start with, it might make things easier:

  1. Fueled By Ramen/DecayDance is neither owned nor funded by a major label, I made sure of that.
  2. Our motivation in signing is not to "cash in " or "sell out". We simply wanted the resources to make the record we wanted. I still make more money if I stay home and go to work. We all have day jobs and it will stay that way.
  3. No $$$ advance, just a recording budget.
  4. No "big name producer" on the recording, just Steve Evetts who recorded "Hello Bastards", "Jersey's Best Dancers", and "Tinnitus", and also all the Kid Dynamite stuff. Although I suppose Steve has become a big name in his own right in the last 8 years. We will be working at the same old studio, TraxEast in NJ.
  5. The new stuff is fast melodic HCpunk, like the old stuff.
  6. No one will be interfering with our songwriting or recording.
  7. When we play something big and ridiculous (Bamboozled) we will attempt to balance with something intimate (Court Tavern, New Brunswick).

thanks for caring. I look forward to answering your questions... -dy

Cops raided Teddy Thompson show | "Bust" & Cabaret law update

Teddy Thompson I didn't even realize that the club raid at Avalon happened DURING the Glenn Kotche & Teddy Thompson show.

GARRETT SHELTON, the director of marketing and A&R for the independent jazz label Sunnyside Records was at the club for an early evening concert featuring WILCO drummer GLENN KOTCHE and TEDDY THOMPSON performing for "subdued Wilco fans," when "40 cops appeared out of nowhere." Everyone seemed confused: "A couple of cops looked completely flummoxed," says Shelton. "They said it was a citywide narcotics crackdown, but they got the wrong crowd!" He added, "The head of the operation was glaring at the crowd from the stage while smoking a cigar."

That, and more about the whole "bust", in Tricia Romano's latest column.

And this from a comment on Teddy Thompson's MySpace page:

Just wanted to say you sounded great last night - before the mike was cut. Please accept my (unauthorized) apologies on behalf of the NYPD. That had to be the most ABSURD shut-down of a show ever! Well, at least the drama of the evening will ensure that your appearence there will not be forgotten any time soon. "Remember Teddy Thompson played Avalon the night it was shut down mid-show."
[Maybe the tongue-in-cheek comment about always wanting to be an '80s club kid had something to do with it. :)] Seriously, I hope you receive official apologies from the venue and the NYPD. Will look forward to your next un-interrupted show in NYC.

Glenn got to play his whole set though.

Love 'em or hate 'em, new ¡Forward, Russia! MP3s

I'm not sure which tracks Jason One Louder was listening to, but he says ¡Forward, Russia! has no good songs. It's been all love or hate with this band so far. Decide for yourself. Yeah Yeah Yeahs too risky for radio | on Payola

Coolfer talks about how Spitzer's radio payola investigation is currently having a negative effect on new artists. Instead of encouraging DJs to play what they want (as opposed to what they were paid to play), the payola scandal has DJs too nervous to play bands like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. They're afraid it will LOOK like they're being paid off.

2 nights added, all sold out | Ticketmaster scalping too

Madonna added 2 more shows at MSG in NYC (thx anon). They both sold out before I knew they were there. That makes four (06/28, 06/29, 07/02, 07/03) sold out shows in total, but she's Madonna, so nobody is really surprised (and compared to Billy Joel, 4 is nothing).

What's more interesting is Ticketmaster (and whomever else is involved)'s attempt to keep some of those scalper profits for themselves....

Madonna

As you can see in the picture above, Ticketmaster is giving you the chance to win a pair of "premium reserved seats" for as low as $380 to $750 PER ticket (those are the minimum bids). I thought maybe there was a charity involved, but I don't see anything about it on the Madonna auction page.

Dancing not protected by the Constitution

"In another senseless slap down, Court floors Big Apple’s dancers. What this means is that if you shake your butt in a venue that isn’t zoned for dancing, you and the club could be in for some serious fines. Once again, the ancient cabaret laws of NY are dragged out to promote 'quality of life' issues which help rob the city of the culture that makes it famous...." [Crazed by the Music]

$750 was a deal | Madonna madness continues on eBay

I checked Ticketmaster at 9:15 this morning. Two nights of Madonna at MSG were completely sold out fifteen minutes after tickets went on sale to the general public. Actually it's not surprising - they were probably gone almost instantly. I just checked eBay. Also not surprising - half the stadium is up for sale, and plenty already have new owners. Somewhat surprising - what some people are willing to pay...

Neko Case not a diva | Concert streaming on NPR

Neko Case: I remember there was some Magnet interview that I didn't take part in and David Cross was hanging out with Carl and the writer really wanted for there to be a problem in our band and couldn't find anything, so he made up all this stuff. David Cross called me a diva and he tried to expound on that-- as if I'd been making it really hard on Carl and David Cross was sticking up for him. I never read it but that's what I was told. David Cross was joking. He's David Cross-- that's what he does. Anybody would know that, even if they didn't know him or me. So it looked very desperate and it made me laugh.

Someone go to a show with this guy

WOLF PARADE @ NORTHSIX (more)
Wolf Parade @ Northsix

This poor guy....

----

"Now I don't have anyone to go to wolf parade with. and i have FOUR tickets. if i cant find anyone i cant go. thats the exact reason why im not going to the raconteurs. I decided to do a little math on how many tickets I had that were not used and were pretty much a waste.
The Arcade Fire - Central Park Summerstage - 9/15 - 37.95 x 2 = 75.90
BRMC - Irving Plaza - 9/26 - 22.85
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah/The National - Irving Plaza - 12/31 - 31.75 x 4 = 127
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah/The National - Warsaw - 9/7 - 18.35 x 2 = 36.70
Coldplay - Nassau Coliseum - 3/27 - 125
Coldplay - Madison Square Garden - 9/6 - 64.35 x 2 = 128.70
Death Cab for Cutie - 35? (I know it was more but i dont have the ticket with me)
Stellastarr - Warsaw - 3/28 - 23.35 x 2 = 46.70
Wolf Parade - Northsix - 10/25 - 18.53 x 2 = 37.06
TOTAL:
634.91 wasted on concert tickets that WERENT used. it's prolly even 100 dollars more when you count shipping, tax, etc. I feel SO bad for my dad, he helped me with a lot of that. So if ANYONE ever says 'I'll go to that show with you' and drops out towards the last few days, warning: I will kick you in the face. Enough money has been wasted. I don't care if you have to murder people, lie, steal, cheat, you're now going to the show with me if you show even a slight interest of going with me. that is all. "

----

I'm guessing this is a trend, especially with shows that sell out quickly months before the show date. Of course this guy might want to learn to use Craigslist. He's estimating he lost $734 at face. I wonder what he lost at scalper's prices?

WEIRD AL NOT ACTUALLY RELATED TO THIS POST
Weird

(note: this post in no way endorses scalping).
