¡Forward, Russia! to NYC in June

¡Forward, Russia! are playing Mercury Lounge in NYC on June 14, 2006 @ 10:00 (10:30). That's annoyingly the same night their good friends We are Scientists and Arctic Monkeys are playing Roseland which could mean that FR ARE opening for AM and WAS - the rumor that Jeff says he made up.

Ambulette's gear stolen in Philly

I've been meaning to do a post on Ambulette for a while now. The angle: It's the new name of the band that essentially was Bella Lea and before that Denali. I saw about a song of them at SXSW, they just played with Dredg at Avalon, and they're touring with Rainer Maria (and NOT Land of Talk). Well unfortunately that's not what my first Ambulette post is really about....

-----

"In an increasingly common occurrence Ambulette awoke this week, midst their tour opening for Dredg, only to find their gear had been stolen. The band offered the following statement on their Myspace page"....

"We stayed at the Extended Stay Hotel near the airport in Philly on Sunday night. Sometime between 1am and sunrise, our van was broken in to (popped the lock on the driver's side door) and the majority of our equipment was taken. Between 9:45 and 10:45 a.m., Matt was guilt-tripped by the two Philly beat cops on the scene for being "too damn optimistic" to leave anything valuable in the van overnight (it's worth noting that neither of the same two officers there to make the OFFICIAL POLICE REPORT thought that it was necessary to get out of their squad car to investigate, not even once, despite the loss of $15,000 to $20000 worth of equipment; I love everybody, including the police, no kidding, but come on...). No one was hurt, and we have insurance that should help cover most or all of the loss, though much of the stuff ('59 Jazzmaster, anyone?) is irreplaceable.

So, if you're our friend, here's a partial list of things that were stolen from us Monday morning in Philadelphia:

guitars:
-1959 Fender Jazzmaster - white w/ white headstock, tortoise shell pick guard
-1974 (?) Gibson SG - brown/natural finish
-2003 Fender "deluxe american" Telecaster - sunburst w/ white binding, pick guard
-1977 Fender Precision Bass - black w/ black pickguard, maple neck

keyboard:
-new Clavia Nord Electro - 72 keys, in SKB hard case

amplifiers:
-1969 (?) Matamp ("Orange") OR100 Head - in flight case, with modified power jack -newer Dr. Z "Presciption" (***not "Prescription - note the misspelling; the amp was made that way) white, in flight case -newer Dr. Z 2x12" speaker cabinet - red -1960's Fender Champ - Tweed -Traynor YBA1 Bassmaster Head

drums:
-16" Ludwig Vista Lite - Clear, in SKB case

effects/pedals:
-Fulltone Tube Tape Echo (in Pelican case w/ Champ Amp) effects together in a pedal board/flight case:
-Demeter Compulator
-Chicago Iron works Parachute wah wah
-Fulltone Fulldrive
-Electro Harmonix Big Muff
-Demeter Tremolo
-Z Vex Lo Fi Loop Junky
-Ernie Ball Volume Pedal
-Keeley Katana
-Peterson Strobe Tuner

If you're on the east coast (Philly, NYC, D.C., Delaware, etc.), and you see these things anywhere, please let us know. If you're a wacko super-fan and know our equipment better than we do ourselves, and are POSITIVE that what you're trying out at the pawn shop in Stroudsburg or Wilkes-Barre or Rochester or Secacus (etc...) used to belong to us, feel free to call the police before getting in touch with us.

In the mean time, thanks to Dredg and Ours and their crews for being kind enough to let us use their equipment every night so that we might finish this portion of the tour. We fully intend to play every night, so to answer a commonly asked question: YES, we will be playing all of the Rainer Maria dates, as planned. And if you're a gear thief, please let us know where you put our stuff."

Palladium Athletic Facility, 140 E. 14th Street

Swimming "The virile and powerful Poseidon is no match for the pairing of energetic Brooklyn band Japanther with an agile crew of synchronized swimmers. The union of the two is an overwhelming juxtaposition of grace and vigor, the fruit of their intercourse being an awe-inspiring aquatic display. The NYU Program Board Performing Arts Committee has organized a water show with the hope of integrating art and music in the athletic arena, giving both artists and athletes a new medium with which to work. They have invited Aquadoom, Dale Mohammed, and Olympic bronze medalist Lauren McFall to choreograph and perform to the live maritime music of Japanther." [MORE INFO]

Macaca Mulatta (ex-Art Brut) @ Cake Shop, NYC | pics

Tuesday night (April 25, 2006) at Cake Shop was technically two shows with a low-low $6.00 admission price that got you into both. The early singer-songwriter show was Jennifer O'Connor and Rose Melberg. The late UK one was presented by One Louder, and featured Ciccone and finally Macaca Mulatta who are best known for being the new band of ex-Art Brut guitarist Chris Chinchilla.

CHRIS CHINCHILLA

The show was interesting - Chris starts out with a few spoken word pieces before continuing to a relatively short set of music. And considering I'd been in that basement venue already for hours, short was good.

Who plays the Art Brut festival?
Eddie Argos: Hmm, all the new bands we like (The Rakes, Futureheads, Ciccone, The Fades...) and maybe Weezer, Morrissey, Luke Haines, Johnathon Richman, Guns & Roses and The Strokes... eclectic! (from a 2004 interview with Art Brut)

Ciccone @ Cake Shop

Friend of both Art Brut & ex-Art Brut, Ciccone was my surprise favorite Tuesday night (april 25, 2006) at Cake Shop in NYC. They flew in from the UK that day, and the crowd was depressingly small, but that didn't stop Ciccone from playing a great debut U.S. show. They actually went on right after Rose Melberg, but none of Rose's crowd stuck around.

Ciccone @ Cake Shop

I got to talk to vocalist/guitarist Rebekah Delgado after the show. She was super nice and gave me a CD without even knowing I had a website. She also proudly told me it was her that coined the phrase "Popular Culture No Longer Applies to Me". Eddie Argos liked it so much he asked if he could use it.

Popular Culture No Longer Applies to Me

Luckily for them (and us), they have two more shows with MM before they go home.

After We are Wolves and Voxtrot came White Rose Movement at Factory People (a clothing store) Saturday night (March 18, 2006). NYC's Dave P played host and DJ. Everyone should always throw fun shows like this. With bills like this.

Do I want to see White Rose Movement at Bowery Ballroom? Maybe, but I'd much rather see them again in a party atmosphere like Don Hill's, Motherf*cker, or Tribeca Grand.

After catching their Friday night set at Stubb's, Ryan Schreiber said the band is more style than substance. Could be true. What do you think?

The Duke Spirit's gear stolen in Portland

Maybe they would have been better off if they never made it. The Duke Spirit's gear was stolen a few days ago in Portland, Oregon. They sent out this letter...

------

The Duke Spirit Hello friends around the world,

we could really do with your help right now:

This morning between 5am and 8.30 am our van was broken into in the “secure, with security guard” car park of the Doug Fir Lonuge hotel and venue in Portland, Oregon.

The following stuff was stolen, leaving us broke, sad and not really able to play tonight or at all for that matter. If you kindred spirits out there could keep an eye on Ebay to see if these stolen things appear, then let us know, and in the mean time if you are from Portland/Seattle area and want to donate gear for a performance we would be truly blessed.

Tapes 'n Tapes sign to XL (sister of Matador)

Everyone's talking about Tapes 'n Tapes signing to XL, home of M.I.A., Devendra Banhart, The White Stripes, and the Raconteurs. Selected quotes from the St. Paul Pioneer Press below...

----

"We're all kind of freaking out," said singer-guitarist Josh Grier. "We've all been really excited and (now) we can finally talk about it."

----

One member of the band won't be part of the new deal, however. Bassist Shawn Neary left Tapes 'N Tapes earlier this month.

"It's a bummer, Shawn is a great guy," said manager Wiese. "There is really no 'official' word, it was just time for it to happen. It just didn't work out."

----

"It started pretty much right after the first blog wrote about the band in November," said manager Keri Wiese. "We got a call from Capitol Records the next day."

In the months since, Wiese said, the band has talked to dozens of labels, both large and small, that expressed interest in Tapes 'N Tapes. A high-profile series of concerts in New York in January helped fuel interest, as did the band's trip to the South by Southwest music festival in Texas.

Jamie Lidell played Southpaw in Brooklyn Wednesday night (April 26, 2006). Jimmy Edgar opened and later joined him on one song. Tuesday night the same lineup played Bowery Ballroom in Manhattan. Thursday night they end their tour in Philly. If its not sold out and you're in Philly, GO.

Jamie Lidell @ Southpaw

The encore was especially off the hook. First someone convinced Jamie to join the crowd. Then the mic went from person to person, and there were at least four audience members that sang REALLY well. Jamie got back on stage and then invited everyone to join him there. So many people went up that the security had to stop it. There was lots of dancing and singing and Jamie making magic with all his toys.

Rose Melberg (& Andrea Vaughn) @ Cake Shop, NYC | pics

Rose Melberg played her first NYC show in YEARS last night at Cake Shop (April 25, 2006). As if that wasn't good enough, she brought in ex-My Favorite vocalist Andrea Vaughn to sing backup on a lot of songs. You couldn't even tell the two never practiced together, but Andrea learned all her parts from an advance copy of Rose's new CD.

ROSE MELBERG
Rose Melberg @ Cake Shop

I never saw Rose perform with Gaze, Go Sailor, The Softies, The Three Peeps, or Tiger Trap, but I'm sure she sounds as good as ever. The decent-sized crowd was full of hardcore fans who she thanked for waiting so long to get a new album. At least one person got her autograph after the show, and I'm sure they'll all be back for part two (of "the 48 hour party" as she called it) tonight at Magnetic Field in Brooklyn. I'm a newbie, and I may try to make it over there too.

Scenic reopening as Midway, Rated X intact

Rated X "In clubland, Scenic is re-emerging with a carnival theme and is now called Club Midway. After a nearly two-month break for renovations to both its interior and its programming, the space will relaunch the scandalous party Rated X, thrown by Michael T and Theo, intact, starting May 6. The duo decided to stay with the venue after dealing directly with owners Oliver and Kenai Sehgal. Michael T says he asked the two brothers whether or not they were comfortable with the gay and risqué nature of their party: 'We brought it up briefly the very first time we met with them in late Febuary, and they were more concerned with the sexual antics than anything gay or straight per se. We really haven't felt it was a homophobic issue,' he says. 'We've certainly told them many times, we don't plan on changing our party.' The club's booking agent, J.C. Scruggs, says Midway will be focusing on 'up-and-coming indie, mostly local bands, but we hope to snag the occasional national act,' and that Rated X is their only weekly dance party thus far." Rothko closed since Blues Traveler show

Blues Traveler played Rothko Thursday night. The band played a two hour set that ran until after 3AM. People at the show told me nothing out of the ordinary happened, but someone else seems to think something related to that show caused the cops to shut the club down. Saturday night's show was cancelled. Monday's was moved to Nublu. Last night's was moved to Fat Baby.

Her 1998 solo record Portola was given stunning reviews by all who heard it, if you are a fan of the softer sounds of Aztec Camera or Cowboy Junkies than this will be right up your alley." The Cost of Live Music

"In the past, Krueger says, live concerts were about throwing a party, not selling a product. Money was made from music sales, so artists had more incentive to underprice concerts. Over time sales of recorded music has dropped and illegal downloads, he says, and the connection between recorded music and live concerts is gone. Artists and managers are compelled to make more money from concerts. Since 1996 ticket prices have outpaced inflation -- 8.9% though 2003 versus 2.3% inflation." [Coolfer]

Chuck Eddy's farewell | "Terminated for reasons of taste"

Chuck Eddy

REPRINTED FROM GAKWER....

-----------

From: Eddy, Chuck
Sent: Thursday, April 20, 2006 11:38 AM
Subject: Chuck Eddy is out of here

Dear Friends, Publicists, and Record Label Folks:

As many of you have probably heard through the grapevine, I am leaving the Village Voice tomorrow, after seven often wonderful years here as the music editor. To make it brief, I have been "terminated for reasons of taste"; if you're wondering what that cryptic phrase means, my advice would be to look at just about any random music section in one of the many other New Times alternative weekly papers around the country, compare it to any random music section I've put together here at the Voice, subtract the difference, and draw your own conclusions. To also be brief, I need a new job now, so if you have any leads, don't hesitate to say so.
My replacement, who begins Monday, is Rob Harvilla, formerly at the East Bay Express. (His email now is 'xxxx@eastbayexpress.com'; I assume that, starting next week, he'll be reachable at xxxx@villagevoice.com.)

As for me, I definitely plan to keep writing about music in some capacity or other -- especially now that I'll finally have time to actually write. So it would of course be great to keep getting unfathomable piles of promo CDs to listen to every day. Problem is, I can't tell you yet where to send them; in my neighborhood in Queens, turns out there's a 10-day waiting list for PO Boxes. As soon as I have one, I'll be sending you another email, letting you know where to send the music you want me to hear. Meanwhile, if you have ideas about where I should go from here, or if you just want to drop me a note, I'll be reachable at xxxx@yahoo.com, an account I just set up two days ago.

Whatever I do, it's hard to imagine I'll ever find another job half as fun and rewarding as this one was. I hope I did the job justice. Talk to you soon, good luck, and be good. -- Chuck Eddy

Alice in Chains 'club' Tour Dates | Smashing Pumpkins

"The last time the surviving members of Alice in Chains were on a tour bus together was more than 10 years ago — when iconic frontman Layne Staley was still alive and the band was packing 30,000-capacity arenas nationwide. But when guitarist Jerry Cantrell, bassist Mike Inez and drummer Sean Kinney head out in mid-May with Comes With the Fall frontman William DuVall, Alice will scale things back a bit.

Instead of the Staples Center in Los Angeles, they'll perform at the Roxy. Instead of Madison Square Garden, they'll take the stage inside New York's Bowery Ballroom. In all, Alice in Chains have booked five very intimate club dates that will act as a primer for the band's European festival tour, beginning May 26 at the Super Bock Super Rock in Portugal." [MTV News] (thx all)

ALICE IN CHAINS DATES
5/18 - West Hollywood, CA @ The Roxy
5/19 - San Diego, CA @ House of Blues
5/21 - Chicago, IL @ Metro
5/22 - Boston, MA @ Avalon
5/23 - New York, NY @ Bowery Ballroom
8/11 - Sturgis, SD @ 2006 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

And as you heard, Smashing Pumpkins are recording a new album.

Axl Rose @ Misshapes

It's unclear if Axl was invited to DJ or not, but the story says that DJ Jess threw on "Welcome to the Jungle" at one Misshapes' request. That arguably rude gesture made another Misshape extremely angry, but Axl seemed to be having fun. He left shortly thereafter.

I feel a little bad for him if he was there just to hang out. In fact, I felt a little silly posting this at all, but then I realized he probably went there just for this very type of publcity. I mean, it's MISSHAPES - where celebrities in need of attention go to get written about in the media.

Islands (ex-Unicorns) played Avalon in NYC this weekend. Like Teddy Thompson before them, they brought the show to the street. Kevchino.com reports, "Donning his acoustic guitar, Nick led the crowd outside with Jamie carrying his tom drum. "I was booted, tossed, and it's going to cost somebody," Roth said on his last show, intimating that his lawyers would go after CBS Radio for the full compensation due from his reported $4 million contract. The timing of the move was interesting: It arrived just days before the Roth show's first Arbitron numbers.

His replacements, in a hiring fraught with bizarre subplots, will be shock jocks Greg "Opie" Hughes and Anthony Cumia _ currently available only to the 6.5 million listeners on XM satellite radio.
