BrooklynVegan site issues, new host, etc... | Help?

Server Error

As many have noticed, this website is having serious technical difficulties. There are constant "Server Errors", the comments post multiple time (if at all), and often I'm not able to post new content (this is the first time I could get publishing to work today). My current web host says I need to upgrade, and it sucks because I think a lot of the strain on the server is due to automated comment spam ("penis enlargement", Viagra, pills, etc...). For every spam comment you see, there are like 1000 more that were blocked by the filter.

Hopefully this will all be fixed soon. In the meantime, if you have any 'dedicated server' host suggestions, or you want to help (Movable Type expert?), please email me (the name of this site AT HOTMAIL.COM) or leave a message in the comments (if you can). Thanks!

Yeah Yeah Yeahs played Roseland, like Bowery Ballroom

YEAH YEAH YEAHS @ COACHELLA 2006
Yeah yeah Yeahs @ Coachella

"Um...I like Bowery Ballroom...It's still my favorite place to play. The Hammerstein and Roseland are a little bit...I dunno. I think we're still trying to get comfortable playing at that size. Not even the size of the stage or the size of the place, it's just that the biggest problem that I have is the bigger the place that you play, the further away the crowd is with all the barricades and the sort of ridiculous security measures that have to be in place. That’s definitely kind of hard for me. I like for people to be able to jump on stage." [Yeah Yeah Yeah Nick Zinner to Gothamist]

Josh Hartnett, The Modern Age, Music Snobbery, The Blackberrie, and the NY Times were at Roseland.

Psychic Ills | MP3s, Tour Dates w/ Blood on the Wall

"One day you will read about the band Psychic Ills." [Banana Nutrament]

"Psychic Ills is a relatively new quartet from New York developing an indie rock hybrid of Confusion Is Sex-era Sonic Youth (the shattered rhythms and screaming feedback), throbbing psychedelia à la Spacemen 3 and My Bloody Valentine, ghostly reverb-soaked post-punk (Joy Division, Section 25), and Eno's glassy synth-generated ambient textures." [SFweekly]

Psychic Ills

"Recent obsessions: the Psychic Ills' Dins (my album of 2006 so far)" [Rajeev One Louder]

"Incorporating space rock, psychedelica, and drone with the ferocious rhythms of punk rock, Psychic Ills are the rare band that is as experimental as they are explosive. While their dark electronics can sometimes fall into the "spooky" genre (spooky = silly sometimes), these guys make up for it when they let their guitars rip. Go to their show and be pleasantly prepared for a very big sound." [Oh My Rockness]

Psychic Ills are playing NYC's Knitting Factory on May 20 with Telepathe, Electroputas and Vizusa (ex-Excepter) (tix). RHCP LEAKS, FLEA UPSET
Date: Tues, May 2
From: "Michael Balzary"
To: members@redhotchilipeppers.com

Flea when i woke up this morning
i was was confronted with the news that our record has been leaked to
the internet
it does not come out til may 9 but now it has leaked
and not that i know alot about this kind of thing
but i guess now it is possible to down load it for free if you want
well
that's not very nice
if you down load it now off one of these file sharing sites
you will be getting a pale imitation of the record
it will be of the poor sound quality of the technique they used to
get it on there
and that will break my heart
it will break john frusciante's heart
it will break anthony kiedis's heart
and it will break the heart of chad smith
yes, we worked for a year and a half to make the epic record of our
lives
and it is sad to me for the business reasons of course
i think we are selling something really cool and we put all we had
into it, 28 songs, 2 hours of the best that we can offer
and i think it is a fair deal for everyone
and for people to just steal a poor sound quality version of it for free
because some asshole stole it and put it on the internet
is sad to me
but, equitable business reasons aside
the thing that really bums me out is
we worked so hard, and so thoughtfully, all of us, for so long
to make this record sound as warm and full from top to bottom
as was possible
we spent day and night for a year making sure every little sound was
just right
that they were all put together in the most beautiful way we could
we did not leave a stone unturned in doing that work
i can not put in words how much this record, stadium arcadium, means
to us
how sacred the sound of it is to us
and how many sleepless nights and hardworking days we all had
thinking about how to make it be the best sounding thing we could
and now, for someone to take it and put it out there with this poor
sound quality
it is a painful pill for us to swallow
let me tell you
this bums all of us out
and i know that, as sensitive as john frusciante is about sound
the idea of anyone getting and hearing this thing that way
will devastate him
for people to not hear the work the way we meant it to be
will really hurt him deep inside
and all of us will hurt

yes, it is stealing from us, and that is lame
everyone has to live with their own conscience on that one
let it be your guide
but to take a version that has been defiled sound wise
a version in which some idiot has taken our year and a half of soul
baring work and pissed all over it
that will break our hearts

sincerely,

flea

Chavela Vargas | Live at Carnegie Hall | streams

Chavela "On September 15, 2003 an adoring and sold-out Carnegie Hall audience gathered to pay tribute to a true legend and revolutionary, Chavela Vargas. The New York Times wrote, 'The audience did not want to let her go, bringing her back for encore after encore.' Everyone in attendance was aware of all the magic and history on that stage, in awe of the fearlessness and heartache this 84-year-old woman yielded as she made her Carnegie Hall debut."

"On Jehro's wonderful, self-titled American debut, which comes out next week, he channels the sounds of Jamaican reggae and Cuban folk into his own gorgeously light, acoustic mix. Imagine Bob Marley's 'Redemption Song' swirled with the swaying Latin pieces of Compay Segundo, and you have a whiff of the idea." [The Daily News]

The Village Voice vs. Pitchfork (or not)

The article new Village Voice music editor Rob Harvilla wote about Pitchfork (2 years ago) is actually not as negative as I thought it would be after seeing part of it quoted in the more recent Washington Post article....

"Tuning Fork, is devoted to picking on Pitchfork. Among the sources of complaints: Pitchfork's mean-spirited rants, which have been accompanied by more than a few zero-point ratings; the site's cooler-than-thou indie-elitist tone; blowhard reviewers who don't really review the music; and pretentious writing that can be, as Rob Harvilla brilliantly put it in the East Bay Express, 'a dense, hugely overwritten, utterly incomprehensible brick of critical fruitcake.'"

RELATED OR NOT: Tom Breihan is still happily blogging for the Village Voice and writing Pitchfork Reviews.

Napster.com "Free" -- Can It Now Compete With iTunes

It was announced on May 1st 2006 that Napster.com would now be free… almost. The service, which is currently only available to U.S residents, now lets you listen to any number of tracks from its extensive 2-million song library. The catch is that you can only listen to each song a maximum of five times before being asked to either purchase it or subscribe to the Napster.com service. Once you’ve purchased the song, or subscribed to the service, you’re able to listen to it an unlimited amount of times or download it to your computer to transfer onto a portable device, such as an MP3 player." Rothko closed for the month | shows cancelled, moved

"The club was shut down after last Thursday's Blues Traveler show, when the buildings department determined that the two-year-old venue's floors needed reinforcing. Owner Rory Maher is renovating the club for the next month or so and diverting his bookings to other spots around the city. A new, improved Rothko will arrive just in time for summer. 'I need a vacation,' Maher quipped." [Tricia Romano]

"Rothko has been shut down until further notice so we have been forced to cancel the upcoming May residency. The May 9th show with Hotel Lights may be moved to a new venue, more info on this as soon as it becomes available" [Jennifer O'Connor]

John Vanderslice on blogs, SPIN, Rolling Stone, etc...

DOWNLOAD: Alias remix of Exodus Damage (MP3, via)

DCist asked John Vanderslice how he feels "about blogs compared with the mainstream music media". His response is below...

----

John Vanderslice Oh man. This is my experience. On Pixel Revolt, I got a review in Spin. It was the first time I'd ever gotten a review in Spin, and we got a letter grade of "C." And I also got shit-tons of reviews on internet only sites, from Pitchfork on down. We got a really good review on Pitchfork. And usually when you get a really bad review, your hardcore fans write you and say, "Man, fuck this guy," and when you get a really good review, your hardcore fans write you and say "Oh wow, this was insightful or interesting, this is great, you should be excited."

When I got the "C" letter grade review in Spin, I heard nothing. Not from anybody. No one ever said anything to me. But whenever I got a good review from somewhere like Tiny Mix Tapes I would get emails about it. It was very clear to me then that all that print media shit doesn't matter anymore. It totally does not matter. I mean, no offense to Spin or anyone like that, but people right now, hard core music people that pay attention, they're online. The big national glossies just don't have that kind of impact anymore. I guess. I mean this is all anecdotal, I can't back any of it up, but the way people find out about us and find out things about us, it's all bloggers. It's all online 'zines. Whether it's Drowned in Sound or Tiny Mix Tapes or Largehearted Boy, Stereogum, Brooklyn Vegan, the list goes on and on.

You know, it's weird, if someone posts something on Metafilter, I look on my website and all of a sudden, we're getting like 25,000 unique visitors in one day, you know. And we got a review on Pixel Revolt in Rolling Stone. And the day that that review came out, there was no bump whatsoever. And that was a good review. And we got no bump in traffic on the website. That's insane. I can look at where people are coming from and who's searching what, and what method they are using to get to my site. After that I was like, "Fuck paying a publicist to work your record, lets just email all the bloggers and send them a record or some MP3's."

A band will come up to me and tell me "Oh my god, we're getting a record review in Rolling Stone and what I want to tell them is, 'Listen, who cares, it doesn't mean anything.'" What means something is that a blogger with credibility has his or her own fan base, you know what I mean? People follow bloggers because they understand their aesthetic framework and what they like and their sensibilities.

THE REST OF THE INTERVIEW @ DCIST

Bowie taking time off, (still) listening to Arcade Fire & Secret Machines

Nixon in China "Speaking about his decision not to play live or record for 12 months, Bowie told Vanity Fair: 'I'm fed up with the industry. And I've been fed up for quite some time. I'm taking a year off - no touring, no albums. I go for a walk every morning, and I watch a ton of movies. One day, I watched three Woody Allen movies in a row.'

He continued: 'I've been listening to Arcade Fire and Secret Machines and this great opera from the '80s called 'Nixon In China'. It's just that. He gets off the plane. He has dinner with Mao. Someday, I might do opera. But I don't have a musical in me, much less a vampire musical.'" [Yahoo News]

Einar Orn (Sugarcubes)'s Ghostdigital | May 2006 Tour Dates

"Ghostigital is the musical project of icelandic singer/poet Einar Örn. Einar is better known for his vocal and trumpet work with The Sugarcubes in the late 1980s/early 1990s, where his rapped exhortations served as a kind of running commentary on the lyrics sung by Björk, the group's focal point and future megastar." [Wikipedia]

Ghostdigital

"Einar Örn, former abstract rapper in Iceland's The Sugarcubes, is definitely coming in from the left hand side of the field (the bit in the corner where Psychic TV, Lee Perry and Uncle Bill Burroughs hang out). Ghostigital is weird and noisy, but never over the top or overtly self conscious - in fact it's a bit of a gem." [BBC]

Features wouldn't score commercial, dropped from Universal

"In addition to using the song in the commercial they wanted us to put it on our record and potentially use it as a single. We turned down the offer(knowing the probable consequences), and our record label dropped us." [The Features] (via YANP)

Rolling Stone at 1000

"It was the bible of Sixties counterculture and radical thought. Now as it approaches its 1,000th issue this week, Rolling Stone magazine is once again leading the rallying cry against the political establishment, giving a new lease of life to its legendary editor and founder Jann Wenner." The Stills + Rogue Wave playing Maxwell's | Tix

I was just saying how I saw the Stills last time they were in town. What I didn't say was that I really loved the Mercury Lounge show. Maxwell's is about the same size as Mercury Lounge, and Rogue Wave seems like a band too popular to be opening. Tickets are on sale for a June 2nd Stills show at Maxwell's. (thx William)

The name of this venue was/is actually Saengerrunde Hall - it's a German beer-hall-lodge kind of place. I like The Boy Least Likely To, but I don't love them like a lot of people I talk to do (I do love that one song though).
