Islands took the show outside Avalon

ISLANDS @ AVALON | APRIL 22, 2006 (cred)
Islands

Islands (ex-Unicorns) played Avalon in NYC this weekend. Like Teddy Thompson before them, they brought the show to the street. Kevchino.com reports, "Donning his acoustic guitar, Nick led the crowd outside with Jamie carrying his tom drum. The band and crowd made it around the block but were denied re-entry by the club's security. Bus Driver then joined the crowd for a street party rap." Here's a video...

Pitchfork recently made Islands 'best new music".

This was done before by the legendary montreal band Me Mom and Morgentaler. They were masters of crazy live show stunts. Pioneers before all these montreal bands. multi-member, multi-instrumental (accordian, horns,etc..freakouts..

Me Mom & Morgentaler! Crazy band. Yeah, they did all that stuff before everyone else! Everything you see these guys, arcade fire, even flaming lips and everyone else.. they did all before. incredible shows.

Eveyone can say this band did this first blah blah blah...... but I will tell you that I was there on sat and it was def a magical moment standing out in the rain in the middle of traffic on 6th Ave.

Me Mom and Morgantaler. Damn. I remember them. Insane band. Yeah, that's true. They were deffinitely way way ahead of their time. i read on arcade fire interview where they said Me Mom were an influence. Definitely did this stunt before. People still talking about their crazy shows.

More people should be talking about how incredible Why? were as openers. They're the real deal, and watching Josiah drum is a pretty great experience.

according to National Geographic, they found evidence at Lascaux of drumming and chanting that began in the cave and then continued outside.

The Music Tapes did something like this years ago at Knitting Factory. Handed out whistles and woodblocks and shit to everybody and led a parade around the block. Pretty fun.

Arcade Fire has left shows in this manner numerous times as well, for those that may have seen them close a show in this "Pied Piper" fashion before. Since they are friends with the Arcade Fire, they probably noticed at a show of theirs when they toured together back when they were the Unicorns and got the idea...

Actually I think they just stole the idea from the god fathers of indie rock, Ozomatli.

Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze has been taking his crowds outside the venue forever. Lots of bands do it.

No matter...I was at the Islands show, and it was totally fun, especially in the rain.

Props to the Ozomatli shoutout above.

i think a big reason that this happened is because the venue made them stop playing at 10:30...
i was there, it was really great.

oh, and also, who cares if other bands have done it before? jesus, are you going to blame everyone post-chuck berry for playing rock and roll with a guitar?

I bet you alot of kids got sick for walking in the rain.
You guys call that rock-n-roll. I call it sick.

Thanks Islands for keeping ROCK_N_ROLL SICK
