Mastodon covers Metallica | Listen

"MASTODON's cover of METALLICA's 'Orion', which was recorded for the recently released Kerrang! magazine tribute to the METALLICA album 'Master of Puppets', has been posted online at www.myspace.com/mastodon." [Blabbermouth]

am i the only one who finds this cover completely pointless? aside from a pedal here and there, it sounds like a wimpy version of the original.

Although Mastodon is one of the few bands doing something interesting in metal today, I find this cover a little worthless too. Where are the fucked up Mastodon time sigs? I am sure their evil minds could have worked something like that in there........

i heard it. agreed: it's a competent cover, but too safe for my tastes. they probably were just too intimidated by the song's (and metallica's) aura & history to feel comfortable doing something innovative with it. they paid homage by strict imitation, not interaction and change. at least we know what mastodon's capable of with their original material.

You can't slate Mastodon for not adding anything to "Orion". If it weren't for Metallica there wouldn't BE a Mastodon, and they know this. Besides, altering "Orion" in any way would be like spitting on the grave of Cliff Burton: the piece was his baby, after all.
