My Chemical Romance is a really popular band. Ultragrrrl caused quite a stir recently when she said they were this generation's Nirvana.
Lifetime are a great older band who recently reunited. I forget who said it, but someone told me that Lifetime are to older people what MCR is to the kids. Lifetime are not nearly as popular as MCR though, but they are on Fall Out Boy's label now. I got really excited when I found out Lifetime would be at SXSW. I was surprised when I found out, that not only was My Chemical Romance playing Emo's (a very small venue for them), but that Lifetime was playing right before them at the same benefit show (March 17, 2006). Though I don't know a single song by My Chemical Romance (except maybe Helena because I downloaded it when I saw it making all sorts of 2005 lists), there was no way I was going to miss the opportunity to check them out at a show I was already at.
My Chemical Romance know that (a minority of hip) people think they suck. They also know (this same hip minority think that) Lifetime are cooler than them. In fact, those things basically came right out of singer Gerard Way's mouth. After the first song he told all the cool people to leave; that way they could still tell people they "left after Lifetime". Later he said how honored he was to share a stage with Lifetime (not sure whether he really thinks it, but he knows it's the right thing to say). The promoters understood that people were there for one band or the other too. At least that's how it appeared since they were selling two different versions of the event poster. You got to choose your headliner (Lifetime on top, or MCR on top - I wish I had a pic).
The young crowd was way into it - more into it than me. It was fun, but the things Gerard said between songs were funn(i)er. He was obsessed with cred, and he lost me when he started talking about interviews he gave to teen magazines. He told the crowd that the interviews were stolen, and he urged everybody to steal, and then burn, the magazines after the show.
It wasn't a bad show. I would have stayed for the whole thing if Jonah Matranga wasn't playing on the second stage in the next room at the same time. Like an idiot I left before Helena came on, but at least I got to see a few songs by Jonah in Texas. Pitchfork's Amy Phillips said the MCR show was f*cking awesome. Until very recently I didn't know much about MCR, except for having some vague notion that they were a shitty MTV band that 14 year olds liked. But.. I finally listened to them a few weeks ago and.. I really like it! It's not at all like what I normally listen to (probably the same that any other BV reader likes) but it's pretty fun.

I find it incredible that an "article" or whatever you want to call it that is simply describing an interview she had from a highschooler, hardly what you'd call poignant music journalism or even blogging, causes an uproar in whatever blog "community" there is. The only thing worth reading was the one statement which she was helpful enough to put in bold type. This is what blogging is? An offhanded remark about the state of music and music journalism today made by a NYC party girl whos blog happened to get a lot of hits for whatever reason?
There is music journalism, music criticism, and bullshit teen music fluff pieces. She falls in none of these categories, but what she is talking about falls into all of them. Real music critics are 35 year old men writing for themselves, music jounralism like Rolling Stone are 35 year old men writing for others like them and for the teens buying their magazine (example: MCR was on the fucking cover, if i'm not mistaken), and then there are the teen magazines that Gerard referenced and told the audience to burn. An interesting comment - does he think he'd ever play shows bigger than Emo's today if it wasn't for those teen magazines and other such teen-directed marketing machines like MTV? No, he wouldn't.
Anyway, my point is: whats the big fucking deal? Who is "Ultragrrrl" anyway? I've probably said something like "Fall Out Boy is the new Who" or "T.I. is this generations Marvin Gaye" in my blog, but that doesn't make it the statement of the year or any kind of authority on the matter.

Hey guys I've heard Gerard say it himself "Kisses or Hisses???" He knows that everyone cannot like the same kind of music. WOW...what a dull world it would be if we all liked the same bands. Those of us that love MCR understand G's lyrics and they have meaning to us, but for the haters out there BE COOL! MCR has a very clear message and purpose for creating their music. Just listen and you might learn something.

I went to this show and I liked it a lot. Although they were fairly mainstream at that time, it was a far less amount than they are now. Honestly, I miss when they could go to small venues like these and have the audience really be able to connect with them instead of having to deal with a bunch of teenies (I def. was an MCR teenie at one point...hell, I was 13/14 when I started listening to them and I'm 18 now, everyone has their celeb crushes at one point...but the level of obsession some fans reach are downright scary). They're coming back here on 4/28 (no specific venue/time yet) and I plan on going...they said they want "more personal" shows...let's hope so.

I know that the comment that this is directed at was like in april in 2006, but MCR have way more than 9 months commercial life left, infact, they're still up there 2 years on, and with a new album coming out soon, i'd say they'll be up there for at least another.. hmm... say 4-10 years, and even if they aren't they'll always have devoted fans like me supporting them all the way..
i hope they are like The smashing pumpkins (awesome band) and go forever!!!
