National show to Webster | People pissed, National sorry
THE NATIONAL

BOWERY SHOW MOVES TO WEBSTER HALL
There was some initial confusion about the May 21st National show at Bowery Ballroom because "The Hold Steady" were listed as opener. People found out quickly that wasn't happening, and the show sold out in no time anyway. (Doveman and Baby Dayliner are opening instead). Then ticketholders found out the show was moved to the larger and less desirable Webster Hall. The National sent out this message:
Hi Everyone. Just a quick note to let you know the May 21st Show in NYC at Bowery Ballroom sold out very quickly and has been moved to Webster Hall for the same night (it wasnt possible to add a 2nd Bowery show). So there are more tickets available now. Thanks and hope to see you there!
PEOPLE ARE PISSED
"I feel taken advantage of. They didn't even offer a half-assed refund option, as they sometimes do when dates or venues get moved around." [Central Village]
"I'm bummed." [in an email I got]
"the f*cking national show was moved to webster hall...a-holes." [in the comments]
SO I CONTACTED THE NATIONAL, AND THIS IS WHAT THEY SAID....
"We agreed to play a benefit at the Bowery Ballroom on May 21st for the not-for-profit writers' workshop 826NYC, but the organizers couldn't get other bands to committ to play. Bowery then asked us if we wanted to play a headline show instead on that date. We agreed and confirmed it mid last week and announced the show in an email to our mailing list. We didn't realize tickets would sell out as fast as they did and before the show was listed in the papers. So there were lots of fans/friends who didn't have a chance to buy tixs before they were gone. We tried to add a second night at Bowery but that was impossible as Monday the 22nd was already reserved. We decided with Bowery to move the show to a larger room since we are about to enter the studio to record a new album, and therefore won't be playing shows in NYC again until at least the Fall. That's the story....it didnt occur to us that the switch could bother some folks who prefer bowery until the decision was made....in hindsight, we all feel bad that some people who prefer Bowery and bought tickets thinking that was the venue are upset by this. but that being said, we will make sure the show at Webster is great."

Great headline. I feel like I should be reading it on the Fox Breaking News scroll: "ROVE LOSES POST...CAT TRAPPED IN WALL...PEOPLE PISSED, NATIONAL SORRY...
Posted by Max Power | April 19, 2006 4:54 PM
some people are really overly sensitive, though I do think it would be cool if they still did the show for charity...
Posted by nora | April 19, 2006 5:12 PM
let's sure hope the L train isn't down that weekend. would make me double pissed since i could have just easily taken the J/M/Z to the stop right in front of the bowery.
Posted by mister | April 19, 2006 5:28 PM
It would be cool if they just stuck it out at the Bowery. I bought tickets to see a show at the Bowery not at Webster.

whatever, webster hall has the best soundsystem of any live club venue in the city, hands down, so it's not that big a loss. bowery still wins out on size and intimacy.

What??? the sound at Bowery is MUCH better than Webster.
Posted by DrJimmy | April 19, 2006 5:45 PM
JL, you are a moron. Webster Hall has a crap sound system and is a terrible sounding venue. Besides its intimacy, Bowery is the best sounding venue in New York... but that being said, I'm not compaining about the show being moved, its just 1 show and the National will suck wherever they play.
Case closed.

I never would have bought tickets to this show if it was at Webster to begin with. Lame lame lame.
Posted by lamelamelame | April 19, 2006 7:19 PM
Sorry scalpers, you won't get to make as much $$ now that more people can get in to Webster than Bowery. Supply goes up your price goes down. That's why you are really pissed. Sorry about your luck.
Posted by SorryScalpers | April 19, 2006 7:29 PM
JL you are dumb. the sound at webster hall is terrible. and the ambience is even worse. and the drink prices are insane. no f*kin refunds. Had i known i wouldn't have bought tickets. blah.
Posted by Anonymous | April 19, 2006 7:30 PM
if a venue change makes you not want to see yhem play then you probably shouldn't have bought tickets in the first place. I usually buy tickets to a show if I want to see the band, not because I want to attend a certain venue. the national are a great band. the venue doesn't matter. are people upset that they're getting bigger and playing larger venues? if that's the case then, well, fuck you. they deserve any and all the success they get. so, in conclusion, if you want to see the band then buy tickets and go to whichever venue is listed. if you want to argue with me in person then come to my apartment (the acoustics are better here than your place and I want to appreciate the full frequency spectrum of your senseless banter.)

Here's a thought. Instead of bitching like whiny little simps, why don't you:
Go to www.BoweryPresents.com and contact them. Tell them that you would not have purchased tickets if you knew the venue wasn't going to be the Bowery. Or contact www.TicketWeb.com and tell them that you purchased tickets because the show was at the Bowery, the venue has changed and you are not able to go to the new venue and you want a refund. Be polite yet forceful.
Promoters for venue moves like that don't advertise refunds because they don't want people to ask for refunds who just decided they didn't want to go (it happens) and use the venue change as an excuse. However I know that if a venue changes Ticketmaster will give you a refund, I believe (but dont quote me) that legally, they have to. TicketWeb is owned by Ticketmaster sooo......
Someone do this then post back. I bet you get a refund.

webster hall and bowery both suck!
venues in bvrooklyn are way better.. security is much nicer and better sound
plus webster hall is always so fucking HOT!
i get heat stroke just thinking about it

Calm down, dad, and read the fine print. you can be polite yet forceful to me any time you want, though.

If the show changes venue, you are legally entitled to a refund.
Basically, if anything on the face of the ticket is not true (i.e. venue, performer, date, or time) then by law, they must give you a refund.
If you ask for a refund and they don't give it to you, call the department of consumer affairs.
This is not a gray area.
Posted by Jimbo | April 20, 2006 12:03 AM
i think that they probably mean "resheduled" in a broader sense that encompasses "relocated" in with it. Or if they're absolutely particular about rescheduled meaning change of time, then the starting time will be different between the two venues; bowery ballroom shows always start later then at webster hall. they'll refund it as long as you are polite and not a total bitch about it.
Posted by cumrag | April 20, 2006 12:46 AM
I still can't believe its even an issue. who fucking cares what venue it is? aren't you going for the band? if you want to see the national, go to webster hall and see them. otherwise, don't. if you care that much about the venue have your parents sign a fucking permission slip and ill arrange a field trip.
Posted by dave | April 20, 2006 1:20 AM
i love the national. i will see them wherever, but there's a difference in webster and bowery and it's understandable that people are upset. would you rather have your filet medium rare or well done...it's a good problem to have but still, I like mine medium rare.

I hate Webster Hall, I always get riled when something I want to see is there.
All performances are worse when they are at Webster Hall.
Posted by Brundlefly | April 20, 2006 3:20 AM
Eh. I am still going. Want to hear some new songs and I think theband is fucking awesome live.
Posted by Anonymous | April 20, 2006 5:45 AM
I appreciate the candor that the band has taken in replying to brooklynvegan. You don't always get that, now do you?
Posted by Rob | April 20, 2006 9:33 AM
they're playing Culture Shock at SUNY Purchase tomorrow night.

wow, indie rockers are a bunch of cry babies - pussies - all of you. Yes, i understand the refund idea - it should be an option, but to claim that webster has a bad sound system is ridiculous. That room has an amazing sound system. sure, there are a couple misses sound wise, but you think its because of the room or the equipment? get a fucking clue. it's the bands sound person that fucks the sound, not the club. secondly, if you take that into account, the bowery and webster have the same inconsistency issues - and its not due to the room or the equipment. have you been at a show that has amazing sound in either club? i bet you have which means the venue is totally capable of that output ever show. its that way across the globe - even here in omaha. new yorkers are such babies they don't understand how easy the city makes it on you. try living there then moving away to a city with less than ample rooms. i'm wishing i never left. cry to the bands if you have a problem or just shut up because you have it too good.
Posted by blogsareforbabies | April 20, 2006 11:52 AM
amen, omaha!
Posted by dave | April 20, 2006 2:50 PM
yeah, omaha is right. i failed to mention in previous posts that i got assed out of buying tickets at bowery but fool me once, shame on www.BoweryPresents.com, fool me twice, shame on me.
Thanks TicketWeb.com~!

Indy crybabies. Just go to the show and quit whining. I hope none of you are going to Bonnaroo. If you can't take this, just wait until a weekend in the 100 degree humid sun in Tennessee.
Posted by Charlie Weis | April 20, 2006 5:04 PM
you hope none of us are going to Bonnaroo? what if we're all hot girls?
think before you speak.

Regardless, the band's excuse is lame. They could have honored their Bowery billing and then did a show at another venue.
Posted by Anonymous | April 20, 2006 5:37 PM
The sound system at Webster is too good. You don't need such huge arrays in a relatively small venue. Even Warsaw with their tiny system sounds better than Webster (and is comparable in physical size). It's the width of the balcony that really makes Webster terrible for sound. An array that large should be closer to the side walls. And don't get me started on the HUGE subwoofers that are under each balcony or the terrible variance in frequency response of the hall (ever notice how certain low notes seem to jump out at you?), or the constant clinking of bottles from the bar, or the fact that there are always seems to be a lot of people who talk throughout the whole show. The hall sounds good in some places, but from a sonic perspective there are many more good places to stand in Bowery (pretty much the whole room, including the balcony).

hey Ryan, don't forget the incessant thump of techno music coming from downstairs that ruins any acoustic ballad or intimate moment between artist and audience.

i think the band's explanation is fine. this same thing happened to them in london as their may 31 show at Scala sold out in a few days before ads were out in the papers. this was months ago. the show was moved to a venue twice the size called Koko which is bigger than even Webster i think. this is normal in london. i didnt see anyone complaining about it. maybe people like Koko better than Scala though. but this show should be great. they will likely play new songs i would think and be energized to make up for the slight anyone feels.
