Reviews & Pictures from Gorillaz @ Apollo - night one

i saw the gorillaz to day and OMG it was amazing damon is brilliant but they had a technical problem and the projector didnt work so there was no graphics =( but it was amazing

Although the visuals would've been awesome to complete the package, Damon followed through with his promise and put on a spectacular show. MF Doom wasn't able to make it there in person or on screen but only in audio. The encore of Que pasa contigo also wasn't there, I was definitely sad about that. Other than that, the show was great! Without the visuals up and running, I was able to concentrate on watching the band and really get into the groove with everyone else in the theater. It was definitely worth the cross country trip to be part of this unforgettable experience. Thanks Damon and Jamie for everything!

.... it started an hour late because they were having some technical difficulties (so says Damon when he addressed the crowd before the show started).... de la soul were great ... they did one encore piece (hong kong). Hopefully the rest of the shows go a little smoother.

Let me say that it was an amzing show, BUT, where were the projections? My favorite part of Gorillaz is obviously their artwork. I saw the screen stay blue all night and was just waiting for the images. Nothing. It would have been amazing to see alll of the art they had planned to go with the show, but no luck. The lack of artwork was my only disappointment.
The empty screen did allow the crowd to watch the stage at all times, which was amazing. Throughout the night the stage was completely filled with the band, a string section, choir(s) and of course the guest musicians. The highligt for me, other then seeing Shaun Ryder, was "Dirty Harry." The childrens choir was so enthusiastic and then Bootie Brown came out and ripped it! Everything was great, including the puppets in the balcony. They encored with "Hong Kong."
All in all, it was great. Yes, the projections/art would have helped, but there's nothing we could have done about that. The delay helped me out though, since I had to wait for a friend and got there right as they were starting. Also, the $25 tickets were butter! The seats were in the last row of the balcony on the left, but I never stayed there. I stood up in the back because everyone was sitting down and how could you not dance at this show, especially during "Dare!?" I'd love to see the show again for the artwork, but I'm not paying $70. Great show! Great set!

The security wasn't bad at all. They say no picture taking but I got a few photos and so did other people. I think someone was smoking in there but I wouldn't suggest it.

with all the things that went wrong, sounds like not that great a show. maybe you just like gorillaz more than most.

i hope tonight(and the rest of the shows) go smoother than last night. $90 tickets after t-bastards fees and the projector doesn't work? that is weak.

I have the option of sitting on the ground or in the first row of the top level. Which should I take?
Posted by bob | April 3, 2006 2:08 PM
sit on the ground floor. I sat first row of balcony last night although it is a great view the crowd seemed more into it on the floor.
Posted by danfun | April 3, 2006 2:11 PM
how long is the show?
Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2006 2:32 PM
if we want to sneak a friend down on to the floor, is that going to be a possibility?

With all the problems, it was still a great show. I personally am not the biggest Gorillaz fan in the world, hence the $25 tickets, but i am a fan. I tried not to get too upset over stuff like the screen not working and maybe others who went last night feel the same way, so thats why everyone still enjoyed it. make the best of the situation, it was still them onstage and hey, it's even more rare to see Gorillaz without images, right?

show was 70 minutes
security was lax
mixed dinks were 10 dollars
the crowd blew, but i DANCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCED
who cares about the cartoons, it's all about the music

Great show and we were in the expensive seats, thought it was sold out until we heard they released some more tickets. There were plenty of empty seats around us.
A Parklife encore whould have been the DB!

tuesday was amazing. i say def sit in the balcony, you have a much better view of the entire scene. you'd barely be able to see Damon if you were in the orch cuz he plays the whole show sitting at a piano at the back of the stage.
Posted by halified | April 4, 2006 8:01 AM
what time did the show start on tuesday?
Posted by david | April 4, 2006 12:21 PM
Tuesday's show started at 9pm and was great, everything was working.

It was fan-tas-tic (Sunday). The puppets were more than enough for me... so the difficulties with the video were nothing to me. If you come interested in the cartoons more than in the music then you should better wait until 2007/2008.

Thanks so much for the seating advice, halified. I picked up a couple of mezzanine center row B tickets rather than going for orchestra seating. Very helpful (hope I wind up agreeing).
Posted by birdboy | April 5, 2006 8:10 AM
speaking of above: I only need one of my tickets, and would love to pass on my good fortune to a BVer. If anyone wants my extra ticket for $30 (face value is $72) post your email and I will contact you.
I hope I am not violating any BrooklynVegan rules by posting this, if so I sincerely apologize and it won't happen again.

is your extra for thursday?
Posted by wow | April 5, 2006 10:46 PM
Went to the show tonight. Awesome. I can see why tickets were so expensive. Lower Mezz center seems to be the best place to sit. But my seats were great, there really are very few bad seats in this place.
Way too loud though. Maybe because of where I was sitting.

Did Dennis Hopper show up?
Posted by brassbonanza | April 6, 2006 12:03 AM
yes he did. It was really cool, the crowd really was into it. I wasn't aware he was part of this show. The encore was also quite something; the last song was the musicians playing along to Ibrahim Ferrer singing on the movie screen.
