Southpaw expands | New downstairs bar | Art Brut, Antibalas
"Southpaw has completed and will be opening a new space downstairs from their main room. The bar will be known as Down South...The bar opened with a soft launch during the recent Art Brut show, but will have it's official opening night this Friday for the sold out Antibalas / Baaba Maal show. Down South will be open during the busier nights at the club and will also be available for private functions.
Down South features a full-bar, DJ Booth, projection and plasma screens showing CCTV of what's going on upstairs, a superb sound system piping in the live music and some really hot light-up tables that were once cases for rocket launchers. The walls are covered with murals of old photos of Brooklyn."
More pictures of Down South @ the Southpaw Photo Blog, and it's true that Friday's Antibalas show is sold out, but Saturday's isn't.

i like it. and i don't think that it will be open separately from the shows, right? so people shouldn't be paying the cover just to go down there... at least i hope not. it's a nice spot to get away from a crowded show for a few minutes while still getting to enjoy that music.

the best venue in brookln just got even better!
but i can see one thinking it could draw yuppies but i see it as a place to tell the people who just chat through an entire show to go too!

I was down in this space at the Art Brut show, had no idea it was its first night. I really liked the space, the arched wall had a projection screen tv in front of it showing the band playing directly above. Not the friendliest place for people not already in a clique, but very nice space, check it out next time you are there for a show.

I was down there for the art brut show and I have to say it was one of the most interesting and comfortable spaces of any of the live venues in, not only Brooklyn, but the whole city. I always thought of Southpaw as Brooklyn's Mercury Lounge, but now it seems more like Brooklyn's Bowery. I just wish the stage (upstairs) was in the back.

"I just wish the stage (upstairs) was in the back." - Indeed
"now it seems more like Brooklyn's Bowery" - does seem that way.

i would hate it the stage were in the back! my favorite thing about Southpaw (well besides that it's the only venue I don't need to rely on public transportation to get home from) is that no matter how crowded a show is you won't get stuck in the back since the entrance is right by the stage!
but yeah - it definitely feels more Bowery-ish now... only way more cozy.
