The Duke Spirit's gear stolen in Portland
Maybe they would have been better off if they never made it. The Duke Spirit's gear was stolen a few days ago in Portland, Oregon. They sent out this letter...
------
Hello friends around the world,
we could really do with your help right now:
This morning between 5am and 8.30 am our van was broken into in the “secure, with security guard” car park of the Doug Fir Lonuge hotel and venue in Portland, Oregon.
The following stuff was stolen, leaving us broke, sad and not really able to play tonight or at all for that matter. If you kindred spirits out there could keep an eye on Ebay to see if these stolen things appear, then let us know, and in the mean time if you are from Portland/Seattle area and want to donate gear for a performance we would be truly blessed.

From John at KEXP, when I wrote him just now to make an announcment on-air:
"We announced the day after it happened, had them in for an instudio and even had some listeners bring in gear for them to use. That was on
Monday."
Brings tears to the eyes... good coming from bad

this is what their record label sent out:
"On Saturday The Duke Spirit had all of their amps and equipment stolen from their rental van. As soon as StarTime can get more details they’ll be posted online in hopes of recovering some of the stolen loot. The band feels incredibly grateful to those who’ve pitched in already. That includes the Dandy Warhols and Kleveland who lent them their equipment in Portland, a random KEXP listener who, upon hearing of their misfortune, dropped his drum kit by the radio station, Panda & Angel at the Crocodile Show, friend Rod Bennett, and Gibson Guitars.
The band is continuing the tour using borrowed backline. StarTime and The Duke Spirit thanks everyone’s generosity."

i don't know if this is a new thing, but it certainly seems to be happening with a great deal more frequency then before. it is more than a little disturbing.

There is no sense of honor in hipsterdom. Just irony and more irony.
I far prefer the hip hop community.

Why do you say that, Camille? Surely you don't think that the thieves were hipsters. I imagine you think that those who buy stolen gear (who aren't necessarily hipsters) do so knowing that it's stolen, or should be able to figure out that it's stolen. How do you propose that prospective buyers of used equipment determine whether a seller is legit or a fence?

why is this happening? In PDX at least, meth, a massive problem here in Oregon (recent reporting including a family finding a man in their attic attempting to rip out the wiring of their house to sell for scrap to get his next fix).
The lovely folks that stole the Decembrists gear last year (also in PDX) were meth heads as well.
