Yeah Yeah Yeahs too risky for radio | on Payola
Coolfer talks about how Spitzer's radio payola investigation is currently having a negative effect on new artists. Instead of encouraging DJs to play what they want (as opposed to what they were paid to play), the payola scandal has DJs too nervous to play bands like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. They're afraid it will LOOK like they're being paid off.

Is it me being slow-normal, or does that argument make absolutely no sense?

Maybe DJ's don't play the Yeah, Yeah, Yeah's because they're not good? Did we ever think of that?

we thought of it, but then we realized they were good.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are a confusing example. Playing Hilary Duff would look like Payola. Playing voxtrot would not.

What's to be scared about? The case was already settled. Nobody's watching anymore.
What's really happening is that radio DJ's can't do their jobs without being told what to play. It's not like they've been hired for their knowledge or taste.

I have never been happier to feel so far removed from the world of commercial radio. What a bunch of idiots.

Oh, pity the poor radio station personel! Now that the indies aren't dictating things the execs have to actually do their job and decide what new music to play. The horror!
