Guns N' Roses @ Hammerstein Ballroom, NYC | pics
Holy shit did this show (May 12, 2006) beat expectations. Guns N' Roses took the stage for the first of their four performances at NYC's Hammerstein Ballroom at 11:00 and played straight until 1:15 (that's 2 hours, 15 minutes straight). They opened with Welcome to the Jungle and closed with Paradise City. Also played Patience, November Rain, Live and Let Die, Nighttrain, Sweet Child of Mine, My Michelle, etc... I think they played everything I wanted to hear except Rocket Queen. Slash played lead guitar. Just kidding. Sebastian Bach sang You're Crazy and My Michelle with Axl. Not kidding. I could write about this show for hours, but it's almost 3AM so here's a few photos for now...

new venue: Greenpoint's McCarren Park Pool
AGORA @ MCCAREN POOL (via Tien who has more)

We've all been wondering what's the deal with the Bloc Party/Secret Machines/Mew show at McCarren Pool in Brooklyn this summer. NYU/NY Times has the answer....
The Parks Department estimates the cost of restoring the McCarren pool at upward of $40 million, and at the moment no one is willing to foot the bill.
That is where Ron Delsner Presents (Clear Channel) stepped in. Last summer, the company paid for a modest cleanup so the pool could accommodate an experimental dance performance by Agora, a troupe founded by the French-Canadian choreographer Noémie LaFrance. It was the first public event to grace the graffiti-covered space since it had closed. Because of the donation, Ron Delsner Presents received a contract to present 10 more events this summer.

Misshapes & live Moby karaoke at the Whitney last night
MISSHAPES & MOBY | MAY 11, 2006

Klaus wrote in, "This is old news as it happened last night, but I attended the Whitney Museum ArtParty last night and was surprised by choice of entertainment. From 8:00pm - 11:00pm, MisShapes DJed during the Whitney's silent auction. Then, after 11:00pm, Arlenes Grocery's Rock n Roll Karaoke band performed and even had a little help from Moby on guitar and background vocals on Whole Lotta Love and Rebel Yell."

THE WEAKERTHANS DO NOT HAVE A "MY SPACE"
It has been brought to our attention that there are several "My Space" pages dedicated to The Weakerthans. We are not entirely sure what My Space is, but have heard it is an interesting thing. However, please note, none of us in The Weakerthans have anything to do with My Space, so we are obviously concerned that some internet users will believe that they are corresponding with us, The Weakerthans. This would be swell, if we had a My Space account, but this is not the case. WE DO NOT HAVE A "MY SPACE" ACCOUNT. Sorry for the capital letters. Have a fine day.

Shearwater | MP3s, 2006 Tour Dates | Palo Santo
"Shearwater has transformed itself to the point of reinvention on Palo Santo, the band's fourth album. The first Shearwater release to be made up entirely of songs by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Meiburg, Palo Santo resembles previous Shearwater albums only incidentally." "If you've previously written off Shearwater as an Okkervil River side project, now is the time to reevaluate that stance. The band once split the difference between OR's frontman Will Shelf and keyboardist Jonathan Meiburg, each pulling 50/50 songwriting duties. You may wonder where Sheff has gone on this record, but you won't miss him." [Pitchfork gave their new record a 7.6]

DOWNLOAD: If I ever feel better (MP3)

Last night (May 10, 2006) worked out perfectly. Beirut went on almost an hour later than scheduled, but there was still ample time after their set to get to Bowery Ballroom to see Phoenix who put on a great show.

Beirut @ Knitting Factory, NYC | pics
I couldn't resist showing up to Beirut's first NYC show at Knitting Factory last night (May 10, 2006). I wasn't alone...

Beirut's bio reads, "Live, he’s used to pushing play on some recordings and marching around onstage with a trumpet. But, for the first time, he’s assembling a band to recreate the melodies in his head live." This show was the nineteen year old frontman's second with a band (the band included Bryan Devendorf of the National on drums). Before this he's only ever played in Albuquerque, Santa Fe and a handful of shows at this year's SXSW festival.

Hasn't played many shows, first one in NYC, new band, young....I wasn't expecting a show as beautiful as the songs - and it wasn't. The potential was there though. Crackers United describes it nicely: "The first couple songs of the set didn’t really translate that well on stage due to some first show jitters and trouble getting the ukulele’s tuned and to come over the PA correctly. Throughout the set Condon was busy swapping between his ukelele, trumpet, and vocals. It wasn’t until toward the end of the set, that it seemed like they got things working for them.........Condon already has an excellent album under his belt and I’m sure the live show isn’t too far behind."

Controversies @ Hot 97 & Power 105 | Howard Stern not moving
"A popular radio personality was fired yesterday after making a series of shockingly ugly, racist and violent on-air remarks - including a threat to sexually molest the young daughter of a rival deejay. The comments by Troi Torain - better known to his listeners on top-rated hip-hop station Power 105 (WWPR-FM) as DJ Star - were so over the top that he could be in hot water with the FCC and the Manhattan district attorney's office. Torain offered listeners $500 to tell him where the daughter of nemesis DJ Envy, of Hot 97, went to school. "Yes, I disrespect your seed," Torain ranted. "If you didn't hear me, I said I would like to do an R. Kelly on your seed. On your little baby girl."" [Daily News]
"Hot 97 Limits Posses and Puts Security on Patrol......but the radio station's landlord still wants to evict them! The trouble-attracting hip=hop and R&B station won a reprieve from a judge, allowing them to let rappers return to the studios. But on the condition that rappers do not bring their entourages - hmm, will does a publicist or manservant count?" [Gothamist]
"US "shock jock" Howard Stern has vowed never to return to terrestrial radio because of the censorship.
Stern, who has moved to an unregulated subscription satellite network, said he would "throw up" if he had to go back. " [BBC]

Tom Petty vs. the scalpers | 2006 Tour Dates
"Tom Petty and his fans are fighting back against scalpers who used the Petty fan club to score tickets to an upcoming show with Pearl Jam in St. Paul, Minn.
Fans complained last week that many tickets for June 26-27 shows at St. Paul’s Excel Energy Center, that were supposed to go to fan club members via a Web site pre-sale, later showed up on secondary market sites at prices several times face value.
With the help of Ticketmaster, promoter Jam, and site administrator Signatures Network, Petty's management identified and canceled some 600 tickets purchased at the tompetty.com pre-sale that were to be resold. The voided Petty/Pearl Jam tickets (no issues were reported regarding PJ’s pre-sale) will be offered once again to fan club members under more strict guidelines. Those who buy the tickets will have to show a photo ID to pick up the tickets on the night of the concert." [Billboard]

Postcards from Italy
Mount Wroclai (Idle Days)
"Who the f*ck is Lily Allen? I take one week off from the Internet, and three (3!) f*cking bands pop up as the next greatest thing ever. Beirut? Lily Allen? At least I knew I didn't care about Cold War Kids before I left for LA." [Central Village, post-Coachella]

"Beirut is the brainchild of Brooklyn-based musician Zach Condon, but his sound is more Prague than Park Slope. And don't be fooled by his weary voice: Condon is only 19. With assistance from members of A Hawk and a Hacksaw and Neutral Milk Hotel, Beirut's inventive Gulag Orkestar conjures up Old World sights and sounds: Parisian street cafes, Gypsies, silent movies, marching bands, funeral dirges. Created without guitars, Gulag Orkestar instead incorporates an orchestra full of mandolins, ukuleles, violins and glockenspiels." [Kathryn Yu for NPR]
