Guns N' Roses @ Hammerstein Ballroom, NYC | pics

Holy shit did this show (May 12, 2006) beat expectations. Guns N' Roses took the stage for the first of their four performances at NYC's Hammerstein Ballroom at 11:00 and played straight until 1:15 (that's 2 hours, 15 minutes straight). They opened with Welcome to the Jungle and closed with Paradise City. Also played Patience, November Rain, Live and Let Die, Nighttrain, Sweet Child of Mine, My Michelle, etc... I think they played everything I wanted to hear except Rocket Queen. Slash played lead guitar. Just kidding. Sebastian Bach sang You're Crazy and My Michelle with Axl. Not kidding. I could write about this show for hours, but it's almost 3AM so here's a few photos for now...

new venue: Greenpoint's McCarren Park Pool

AGORA @ MCCAREN POOL (via Tien who has more)
McCarren Pool

We've all been wondering what's the deal with the Bloc Party/Secret Machines/Mew show at McCarren Pool in Brooklyn this summer. NYU/NY Times has the answer....

The Parks Department estimates the cost of restoring the McCarren pool at upward of $40 million, and at the moment no one is willing to foot the bill.

That is where Ron Delsner Presents (Clear Channel) stepped in. Last summer, the company paid for a modest cleanup so the pool could accommodate an experimental dance performance by Agora, a troupe founded by the French-Canadian choreographer Noémie LaFrance. It was the first public event to grace the graffiti-covered space since it had closed. Because of the donation, Ron Delsner Presents received a contract to present 10 more events this summer.

Whitney ArtPArtyWhitney ArtPArty

Klaus wrote in, "This is old news as it happened last night, but I attended the Whitney Museum ArtParty last night and was surprised by choice of entertainment. From 8:00pm - 11:00pm, MisShapes DJed during the Whitney's silent auction. Then, after 11:00pm, Arlenes Grocery's Rock n Roll Karaoke band performed and even had a little help from Moby on guitar and background vocals on Whole Lotta Love and Rebel Yell."

THE WEAKERTHANS DO NOT HAVE A "MY SPACE"
It has been brought to our attention that there are several "My Space" pages dedicated to The Weakerthans. We are not entirely sure what My Space is, but have heard it is an interesting thing. However, please note, none of us in The Weakerthans have anything to do with My Space, so we are obviously concerned that some internet users will believe that they are corresponding with us, The Weakerthans. This would be swell, if we had a My Space account, but this is not the case. WE DO NOT HAVE A "MY SPACE" ACCOUNT. Sorry for the capital letters. Have a fine day.

"Shearwater has transformed itself to the point of reinvention on Palo Santo, the band's fourth album. "If you've previously written off Shearwater as an Okkervil River side project, now is the time to reevaluate that stance. You may wonder where Sheff has gone on this record, but you won't miss him." [Pitchfork gave their new record a 7.6]

Beirut @ Knitting Factory, NYC | pics

I couldn't resist showing up to Beirut's first NYC show at Knitting Factory last night (May 10, 2006). I wasn't alone...

Beirut @ Knitting Factory

Beirut's bio reads, "Live, he’s used to pushing play on some recordings and marching around onstage with a trumpet. But, for the first time, he’s assembling a band to recreate the melodies in his head live." This show was the nineteen year old frontman's second with a band (the band included Bryan Devendorf of the National on drums). Before this he's only ever played in Albuquerque, Santa Fe and a handful of shows at this year's SXSW festival.

Beirut @ Knitting Factory

Hasn't played many shows, first one in NYC, new band, young....I wasn't expecting a show as beautiful as the songs - and it wasn't. The potential was there though. Crackers United describes it nicely: "The first couple songs of the set didn’t really translate that well on stage due to some first show jitters and trouble getting the ukulele’s tuned and to come over the PA correctly. Throughout the set Condon was busy swapping between his ukelele, trumpet, and vocals. It wasn’t until toward the end of the set, that it seemed like they got things working for them.........Condon already has an excellent album under his belt and I’m sure the live show isn’t too far behind."

Controversies @ Hot 97 & Power 105 | Howard Stern not moving

"A popular radio personality was fired yesterday after making a series of shockingly ugly, racist and violent on-air remarks - including a threat to sexually molest the young daughter of a rival deejay. The comments by Troi Torain - better known to his listeners on top-rated hip-hop station Power 105 (WWPR-FM) as DJ Star - were so over the top that he could be in hot water with the FCC and the Manhattan district attorney's office. Torain offered listeners $500 to tell him where the daughter of nemesis DJ Envy, of Hot 97, went to school. "Yes, I disrespect your seed," Torain ranted. "If you didn't hear me, I said I would like to do an R. Kelly on your seed. On your little baby girl."" [Daily News]

"Hot 97 Limits Posses and Puts Security on Patrol......but the radio station's landlord still wants to evict them! The trouble-attracting hip=hop and R&B station won a reprieve from a judge, allowing them to let rappers return to the studios. But on the condition that rappers do not bring their entourages - hmm, will does a publicist or manservant count?" [Gothamist]

"US "shock jock" Howard Stern has vowed never to return to terrestrial radio because of the censorship.
Stern, who has moved to an unregulated subscription satellite network, said he would "throw up" if he had to go back. " [BBC]

Tom Petty vs. the scalpers | 2006 Tour Dates

Tom Petty"Tom Petty and his fans are fighting back against scalpers who used the Petty fan club to score tickets to an upcoming show with Pearl Jam in St. Paul, Minn.

Fans complained last week that many tickets for June 26-27 shows at St. Paul’s Excel Energy Center, that were supposed to go to fan club members via a Web site pre-sale, later showed up on secondary market sites at prices several times face value.

With the help of Ticketmaster, promoter Jam, and site administrator Signatures Network, Petty's management identified and canceled some 600 tickets purchased at the tompetty.com pre-sale that were to be resold. The voided Petty/Pearl Jam tickets (no issues were reported regarding PJ’s pre-sale) will be offered once again to fan club members under more strict guidelines. Those who buy the tickets will have to show a photo ID to pick up the tickets on the night of the concert." [Billboard]

"Who the f*ck is Lily Allen? I take one week off from the Internet, and three (3!) f*cking bands pop up as the next greatest thing ever. Beirut? Lily Allen? At least I knew I didn't care about Cold War Kids before I left for LA." [Central Village, post-Coachella]

Beirut

"Beirut is the brainchild of Brooklyn-based musician Zach Condon, but his sound is more Prague than Park Slope. And don't be fooled by his weary voice: Condon is only 19. With assistance from members of A Hawk and a Hacksaw and Neutral Milk Hotel, Beirut's inventive Gulag Orkestar conjures up Old World sights and sounds: Parisian street cafes, Gypsies, silent movies, marching bands, funeral dirges. Created without guitars, Gulag Orkestar instead incorporates an orchestra full of mandolins, ukuleles, violins and glockenspiels." [Kathryn Yu for NPR]

The Raconteurs | played Irving Plaza, live video, playing Tower Records, album stream, etc

"'This is very much a long-term project for me,' White said of The Raconteurs, who release their debut album 'Broken Boy Soldiers' on May 15." [NME]

The RaconteursThe Raconteurs

The photos in this post are from The Raconteurs April 7th NYC show at Irving Plaza. I'm not a huge Brendan Benson fan, but I thought it was a quality rock show. The general crowd reaction after the show was mixed good and 'eh'. Decide for yourself - Amazon is streaming video from the show. The Modern Age has a review and pictures from the show. MTV is streaming the album.

The RaconteursThe Raconteurs

On Thursday 5/18 (10PM) the band will play an "exclusive NYC performance" at Tower Records (4th & Broadway). "Come down to Tower 4th & Broadway beginning 9:00 AM on Tuesday 5/16, and get a wristband for this performance when you purchase the new Raconteurs CD Broken Boy Soldiers. "Apple iTunes customers are voicing their displeasure with the company on Tuesday as codes promised to them to purchase tickets to the Red Hot Chili Peppers failed to go out. In a promotion launched last month, fans that pre-ordered the band's new album on iTunes were told they would also receive an email with a code that they could use at Ticketmaster.com starting May 9 to purchase concert tickets before they go on sale to the general public on May 13." The Red Hot Chili Peppers played Irving Plaza last night (May 8, 2006). Productshop was there. My friend Nick was there too. He's the same Nick who saw Pearl Jam at Irving Plaza a few nights earlier. To get in to Pearl Jam he waited 24 hours on line. To get in to RHCP he asked the first guy he saw outside the venue for an extra. Not only did the guy have an extra, he gave it to him for free. Red Hot Chili Peppers @ Irving Plaza

"How amazing to see a band like them, at this point in their career, playing an intimate venue. And I had a blast. The only problem is, the show was loud. Painfully loud. To the point where I had to leave my prime spot about 25 feet from the stage to stand in the back near the bar. My ears are still ringing. It's embarrassing to say, but maybe I'm getting too old for a show like this. Is 26 old?" [Last Stop: This Town]

New Buffalo @ Bowery Ballroom, a song w/ Jens Lekman, a Broken Social Scene remix, & The Hidden Cameras

DOWNLOAD: Music is my Boyrfriend by the Hidden Cameras (MP3)

Jens LekmanWe already figured out that:
1. New Buffalo is touring with the Concretes
2. The Concretes signed Frida Hyvönen
3. Frida Hyvönen is touring with Jens Lekman

Now the circle is complete:
4. Jens Lekman recorded a song with New Buffalo (Sally Seltmann)

Jens hangs out with Sally (and the Hidden Cameras) too: "Now he uses the internet to connect with musicians he admires in the countries he is planning to tour. Not only do they help him out on stage, they let him sleep on their couches and show him around their towns. In Melbourne he hangs out with Guy Blackman or Sally Seltmann from New Buffalo and her husband’s band The Avalanches. In San Francisco it’s Nedelle and the guys from Call and Response. In Glasgow, Bill Wells. And anywhere, it seems, with the guys from The Hidden Cameras. If I were a musician it’s exactly how I’d like to do things." [Perceptive Travel]

Sally said, “My album was released in Japan on a label called P Vine and someone there emailed me and told me Jens Lekman loved my record. I’d started working on that song [‘Inside’] and thought it would be good to get a male vocalist, but I couldn’t really think of anyone. Then I found out he was coming here to do shows, so I got in contact with him and he came and sung."

Jens said, "Last monday i did some recording with Sally / New Buffalo in her house. It made me warm inside to meet someone who's so open and passionate about her music. she showed me some new songs that were amazing, I would never dare to invite a stranger into my home and play unfinished recordings just like that. I also met her husband, Darren from the Avalanches, I can tell you that I saw a lot of cool records in their house! They gave me some tips about good recordstores and me and my bassplayer Terese went to check them out."

The song in question is on New Buffalo's New Buffalo EP - out May 15 on Arts & Crafts. Here's the tracklist...

01 Inside the Corrections (featuring Jens Lekmen)
02 Trigger
03 I've Got You and You've Got Me (Broken Social Scene Remix)
04 The Beginning of the End
05 Recovery Fanclub Remix (By Simenon and Smith)
06 I've Got You and You've Got Me (Version Two)

Labelmates Broken Social Scene contributed a remix to the EP. I wonder how many members of Broken Social Scene it takes to make a remix.

New Buffalo EPBroken Social Scene

The Hidden Cameras are opening for Broken Social Scene at Prospect Park this summer. Tickets are on sale.

Last night (May 8, 2006) New Buffalo played Bowery Ballroom with no band. Sally sang to backing tracks and alternated between a keyboard and guitar. I didn't love it. Here's a picture:

I did love the Concretes though. They headlined.

"So I went down to Hultsfred this weekend and I actually had a good time. I went down to play with the Hidden Cameras and before I left I asked Frida Hyvönen if she had a seat left in her car for me and she asked me why I was going there. To do a little guest appearance, I said. With who? she asked. With Snoop Dogg!" [Jens Lekman]

Bowie to curate new NYC festival, play outdoors

"David Bowie will curate the inaugural High Line Festival, to be held in May 2007 in neighborhoods underneath the High Line, a public park being created atop a long-abandoned elevated railway line on the west side of Manhattan.

As part of the programming, Bowie will play a large outdoor concert, his first show in New York since 2003. He will also select musicians and artists to appear throughout the festival. 'I've been particularly excited about seeking out emerging artists and giving them a place in a festival that will also feature some very well-known names,' Bowie says. [Billboard]

Frida has music streaming at Myspace.

Pearl Jam played Irving Plaza | pics & reviews

Pearl Jam @ Irving Plaza "That band/fan synergy was at maximum power Friday during a generous two-hour gig where 1,000 lucky fans got to road test much of the Seattle group's new, self-titled record along with some choice material from the PJ back catalog." [NY Post]

"With arms waving and voices raised, a packed crowd joined Eddie Vedder singing, 'Oh, oh, I'm still alive' at Irving Plaza on Friday night. Mr. Vedder's band, Pearl Jam, is the lone survivor among Seattle's multimillion-selling grunge bands of the early 1990's, and it has held onto its audience in the most old-fashioned way, through constant touring. Its Irving Plaza show was a rare break from an international circuit of arenas and stadiums." [NY Times]

"The venue was tight and tiny. Reminiscent of the early days when Pearl Jam packed small clubs like CBGB’s and everyone in the crowd was warring for centimeters.......Drew Barrymore, Fabrizio Moretti, Flea, Mary-Kate Olsen, Giselle Bundchen, Tim Robbins, Susan Saradon, the lead singer from Anthrax, and Ed’s wife (Jill) and daughter (Olivia) were all there." [Gremmie] (the guys who waited in line for 35 hours)

"I had never actually seen someone leap off the balcony at irving. That was awesome." [Jeddeth]

My friend Nick (the one who waited for 24 hours) took the pics you see below...

"In arena settings, Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder can be perceived as a cold fish. In this jewel-box theater, he was able to shed some of his personal armor and let the house feel his warmth. The guy even joked how Pearl Jam used to open for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. 'Nothing's changed,' he said referring to the RHCP performance at Irving tonight." [NY post]

Axl Rose discusses new lineup & album on the radio

"Axl Rose made a surprise radio appearance to proclaim that Guns N' Roses 10-years-in-the-making "Chinese Democracy" album will finally hit store shelves this fall. Rose said the band at the Hammerstein shows will be similar to the one that played the 2002 tour, except for a new lead guitarist, whom he declined to identify except to say it's not an old GNR member. Buckethead left the band in 2004.

However, later in the broadcast, Rose seemed to contradict himself when he said hes been hobnobbing with former GNR guitarist and songwriter Izzy Stradlin, and strongly hinted that Stradlin may show up for the Hammerstein shows. Former GNR guitar maestro Slash may end up back in the band as well, but probably not before the Hammerstein shows." [Yahoo news]

GET TIX: Tickets for all four hammerstein shows are selling for around face on eBay.

Eugene Mirman

"...help him protest himself tonight. Along with The Onion, Mirman has coordinated the event in which he will gather in solidarity with YOU, yes you. Protest signs will be provided, though you can also make your own (here are some examples). There will be yelling and marching and likely some laughing...eventually you'll end up at Beauty Bar for the screening of the DVD, where you can also unwind from the protest with some drinks and music (spun by a special guest deejay. Showalter?)." [Gothamist]

NY Magazine picks the most Influential New Yorkers

LEIGH LEZARK LICKING SARAH LEWITINN (via)
Ultragrrrl licking Leigh Lezark

"The Influentials" include.....

Sarah Lewitinn, a.k.a. Ultragrrrl
Blogger
Like it or not, she has more power than any print music critic. Lewitinn, who recently made waves by calling My Chemical Romance “this generation’s Nirvana,” attracts thousands of MySpace-savvy readers to her Ultragrrrl blog each day. On the strength of that audience, she landed a book deal (The Pocket DJ) and her own indie-ish label (Stolen Transmission), courtesy of Island Records. Her reach goes well beyond New York: A recent party she hosted in Austin had wannabes waiting on block-long lines and scaling fences.

Clive Davis
Chairman and CEO, BMG U.S. Label Group
In an age when traditional A&R has been all but superseded by the Internet, Davis continues to pull off an improbable one-two punch as nurturer of talent old and new. On the one hand, he plucks teenage R&B crooner Mario from American Idol; on the other, he helps Barry Manilow to his first No. 1 album in almost 30 years. Next: a plump-up for Pearl Jam, which Davis coaxed over to J Records after twelve long years at Epic.

James Murphy
Musician, producer, co-founder of DFA Records
Nobody did more to engineer the dance-punk sound that has swept New York in recent years. Murphy, who just landed British indie-dance sensation Hot Chip, is a triple threat: There’s his Grammy-nominated band, LCD Soundsystem; his remix work for everyone from the Rapture to Gorillaz; and his label, DFA Records, which we’ll look back on as a time capsule of New York music in the ’00s.

John Moore
Booker, Bowery Ballroom
Local buzz-band We Are Scientists were recently asked for the “personal highlight” of their career. The answer? Selling out that “cornerstone of the New York scene”—the Bowery Ballroom. It’s owned by Michael Swier and Michael Winsch, but the impeccable taste of booker Moore makes the venue the final stamp of approval on any indie-rock passport.

Leigh Lezark
D.J., “MisShapes”
Equal parts Louise Brooks and Kate Moss, Lezark is a downtown “It” girl–cum– marketing phenomenon. Her vampy little-girl-lost look was made for the club-scene photos at Last-NightsParty.com, and thanks to a never-ending stream of celebrity D.J.’s—Madonna, Hilary Duff, Hedi Slimane—her weekly “MisShapes” party at Don Hill’s continues to draw L-train mods. And so the product-placers have descended, showering the 21-year-old with freebies in the hope that she’ll propel them to the head of the class. Because where one hipster goes, another inevitably follows.

Nick Denton
Publisher, Gawker Media
Made blogs a popular—and profitable—art form, partly by paying his bloggers intern-level wages. Denton and Gawker.com’s original editor, Elizabeth Spiers, both jockey for credit for pioneering the now-ubiquitous form: jokey headline; snide, quippy post; links; and a willingness to run suspect info (hey, the Internet hive mind auto-corrects!). New York’s other blog baron, Weblogs, Inc., founder Jason McCabe Calacanis, has already cashed out by selling to AOL, but Denton remains on his own, bringing the Gawker formula to, among others, sports nuts (Deadspin), shoppers (The Consumerist), and Silicon Valley (Valleywag).

Richard Hawley | MP3s, will tour soon | Coles Corner

Coles Corner"DOWNLOAD: Coles Corner (MP3)

If you're a fan of Jens Lekman, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Johnny Cash, and/or Roy Orbison, I urge you to (if you haven't already) check out Richard Hawley's latest album, Coles Corner. I know it came out last year, but still. Stylus gave it an A, Pitchfork an 8.1, and nobody below a 7.

I've been listening to it a lot lately, and now I'm finally as excited as Jerry that he's playing for free on July 28th at South Street Seaport (with Nicolai Dunger). AND according to Hawley himself, the show will be part of a U.S. tour that runs from July 25th to August 9th (stay tuned for exact dates).

(Nouvelle Vague's) Camille | Tour Dates, MP3

DOWNLOAD: Ta Douleur (MP3)

Camille"A lot of references come to mind while hearing 'Le Fil' (Narada), the extraordinary album by French singer-composer Camille (she uses only her first name). It was released a year ago on Virgin France (and awarded a pair of Victoires — the French equivalent of the Grammy Award) and now is being released — after far too long a delay — in this country.

Camille put out her first CD, 'Le Sac des Filles,' in 2002; she also was featured prominently in a few tunes on Nouvelle Vague's 2004 album with bossa nova versions of new wave songs. Neither fully anticipated the music on 'Le Fil.'" [LA Times]

Live Nation Q1 Revenues Jump $72 Million (not Clear Channel)

"Live Nation, the world’s largest concert promoter and live event producer, rang up $516.6 million in revenues for the first quarter of 2006, an increase of $72.1 million, or 16%, over Q1 2005.....Live Nation’s positive Q1 numbers parallel an uptick in the overall concert business, as evidenced by a 28% increase in concert grosses reported to Billboard Boxscore in the first quarter." [Billboard]

The increase in their "domestic music revenue is primarily due to an increase in the number of events by artists such as Billy Joel, Coldplay, Aerosmith, Toby Keith and Rascal Flatts, principally in third-party arenas."

I actually thought Live Nation was synonymous with Clear Channel, but Wikipedia says that "On December 21, 2005, Clear Channel completed the spin-off of Live Nation, formerly known as Clear Channel Entertainment. Live Nation is now an independent company and is no longer owned by Clear Channel."
