They Might be Giants 'Celebrate Brooklyn' | "Venue Songs" DVD, MP3s & stuff

DOWNLOAD: Celebrate Brooklyn (MP3)

Venue Songs "The new VENUE SONGS DVD started out as a way to pass the time on a tour bus. Instead of playing more cards or watching another Dave Chappelle rerun, They Might Be Giants challenged themselves to write an original song for every rock club they would be performing in: write it on the bus, rehearse it at sound check, and debut the song to the audience that night. As the tour rolled on, the effort seemed more than a little misguided--possibly disastrous--but happily the experiment paid off. The songs were consistently interesting, and the best of them were very fine indeed. The audience response was one of pure delight. A document had to be made. Returning home to Brooklyn, TMBG recorded the best of the songs. TMBG also collaborated with a small but determined army of highly creative visual artists to create videos for the songs. The Venue Songs DVD was born."

Celebrity endorsements help your band | Sofia Coppola & post-ironic Phoenix | Velvet Underground

SOFIA COPPOLA & THOMAS MARS IN PARIS (via)
Sofia Coppola + Thomas MarsSofia Coppola + Thomas Mars

"Sofia Coppola is such a big fan of the French band Phoenix that she first gave their profile a little lift by weaving their songs into Lost in Translation. 'I love them,' she told Entertainment Weekly, 'so we used the song 'Too Young' for the scene when Bill [Murray] and Scarlett [Johansson] are dancing.' Sofia - now dating the band's lead singer, Thomas Mars - has gone one better for her next film. In spite of the fact that Marie-Antoinette is set in 18th-century Paris and Phoenix are a 1970s-sampling, post-ironic act, Sofia has given the band a further boost by casting the boys as court musicians in the film."

-----

Velvet Underground "What Warhol anticipated was how the very act of linking brave and experimental music with his pop art personality would benefit both band and artist. Back then, it was a bold move (in fact, many 'rock' fans in the late 1960s were put off that first Velvets record because of its arty associations, and one of the greatest records ever made barely dented the Billboard top 200). These days, there's nothing like a little celebrity endorsement to help get a career in music nicely off the ground."

-----

Both quotes from the Belfast Telegraph. A few weeks ago we learned that Sofia and Thomas are having a baby, and Sofia was spotted at Phoenix's recent Bowery Ballroom show.

To learn more about Warhol's relationship with Velvet Underground, check out the educational DVD "The Velvet Underground - Under Review". Popmatters reviewed it

Guns 'N Roses played surprise acoustic gig for Rosario Dawson | Izzy Stradlin & Kid Rock on stage @ Hammerstein

Guns N Roses

Right around the time Art Brut was singing about hanging around with Axl Rose Wednesday night (May 17, 2006), Axl himself was finishing up the last of four Guns 'N Roses shows at NYC's Hammerstein Ballroom. Sebastian Bach was the only special guest the first and second nights. The fourth night got Kid Rock and original GNR member Izzy Stradlin. Blabbermouth reports that Izzy played on 'Think about You', 'Patience' and 'Nightrain', and that Kid Rock "joined GN'R and Stradlin for 'Nightrain'". Ski Brooklyn links to a video.

Guns N Roses

Thursday night (May 18, 2006) GNR played a surprise acoustic gig at a small NYC club. It was Rosario Dawson's birthday party. Blabbermouth reports, "The band finally came a little after 1 a.m. I think. The stage was incredibly small and everyone surged forward to the point where tables were knocked over....Axl, Robin [Finck], Richard [Fortus], Tommy [Stinson], Bumblefoot, Dizzy and Chris [Pittman] all took the stage. Everyone played acoustically except Robin who played a semi-hollow Gibson, and Tommy, who played his usual bass; for 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door', Robin and Richard switched instruments. Chris and Dizzy played maracas, congos, tambourines, and occasionally the keyboard, which was crammed in the corner. Axl introduced the show as the 'karaoke version' of GN'R as a movie screen-sized monitor with all his lyrics was behind him." More details @ Blabbermouth. The pictures in this post are from that show.

Sam Roberts on being unknown in the States, the Canadian scene, & record labels | Tour Dates

DOWNLOAD: "The Gate" (MP3)

Sam Roberts "Sam Roberts (& band) opened for the Stills two nights in a row at Mercury Lounge in April. I went the second night, but missed Sam despite the good reviews that almost motiviated me to get there on time. My only glimpse came when Sam joined the Stills on stage for a song. A few days ago Same came back to headline his own show in the same small room.

In comments, in coversations, and in articles, everyone always said the same thing. Sam is "huge in Canada". Sam says....

"It's nice to be able to live two realities," Roberts said of the dichotomy of being huge stars in Canada and virtual unknowns in the U.S. "To have fans of one variety [in Canada] and then come down and we're the underdogs ... in the U.S., it really is a clean slate for us down there. We get to carve a future for ourselves."

MTV's got an interesting interview.

Sam is touring with Slow Runner in June. He'll be at Maxwell's in Hoboken on June 12th. Extrawack has those dates.

MTV & Microsoft's Urge digital music service launches, Fluxblog & others blogging

Urge "...The two powerhouses (Microsoft & MTV) joined forces to create a music subscription and download service called Urge, which debuted Wednesday. The subscriptions, which cost about $10 a month, allow unlimited streaming of songs from Urge's catalog of nearly 2 million selections............One link from the Urge opening page sent me to a list of blogs commissioned from writers and experts in a variety of genres. Some are quite good. I'm not much of a jazz fan, but blogger Jim Macnie's short appreciation of pianist John Hicks, who died May 10, was not only informative but also heartfelt....." [LA TIMES]

"In the few minutes Coolfer spent with URGE this morning -- after a buggy installation of WMP 11 -- the service looked like a honest to goodness revolution. Particularly striking were the incorporation and visual presentation of blogs and playlists...." [Coolfer]

"Urge users can elect to receive Informer music blogs, written by experts in different genres. Each blog will come with a playlist so readers can simultaneously listen to or download the music they're reading about, MTV said in a statement." [CNET]

" I've been writing the Pop Informer blog for them, but unfortunately, I don't know how to link directly to it, so you'll have to go through the Urge interface to read the column." [Fluxblog who has new Nouvelle Vague & Walkmen MP3s]

NOTE: All the files on Urge are Windows Media (WMA, not MP3)

Panic Channel ruining Jane's Addiction's good name | Tour Dates

I think good thoughts when I think of Jane's Addiction. That's why it bothers me to see Dave Navarro, Stephen Perkins and Chris Chaney's cheesy band The Panic Channel being billed as an "Ex-Jane's Addiction Supergroup".

6/1: Minneapolis, Fine Line Music Cafe
6/3: Denver, Bluebird Theater
6/4: Salt Lake City, Urban Lounge
6/6: San Francisco, The Independent
6/7: Los Angeles, The Roxy Theatre

In less depressing Jane's news....

"Lollapalooza founder and former JANE'S ADDICTION and PORNO FOR PYROS frontman PERRY FARRELL hopes to release the debut album from his new band, SATELLITE PARTY, sometime late this summer. The self-titled effort, which includes former EXTREME guitarist NUNO BETTENCOURT, will feature guest appearances from RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS bassist FLEA and guitarist JOHN FRUSCIANTE, along with BLACK EYED PEAS singer FERGIE, NEW ORDER bassist PETER HOOK and Farrell's wife, Etty. The group's first public appearance was at last year's Lollapalooza festival, and, according to Farrell, the band hopes to make a second appearance this year. Satellite Party's first single, "Dogstar," is slated for release this summer. In the meantime, Rhino is preparing a Jane's Addiction box set and plans are in the works to release two of Farrell's films "

RIP Circus Magazine

Circus Magazine

Gawker found out that Circus Magazine editor Gerry Rothberg wrote a letter to his contributors saying, "It is with sadness and a deep sense of loss that I must inform you that I've experienced great financial loss, which includes Circus Magazine. Over the last year, I've tried my best to hold on to Circus Mag, selling all my personal possessions, including my home, pumping the money into the mag. And I've lost all. I've held off contacting people because of the shame and humiliation I've experienced. I'm broke. I feel like Humpty Dumpty who had a great fall."

Did you even know Circus still existed?

5th Ave Apple Store opening | band playing? U2?

The new apple store in NYC opens on Joey Ramone's birthday, May 19th @ 6PM. A Curbed reader sent in a tip that "Apple has requested that a street (presumably 58th or 59th) be closed for the performance of a major live band". They said their " money is on U2 making an appearance". Apple's website says nothing about a band and it seems unlikely U2 would do this, but as Newyorkology points out, showing up will at least get you a free t-shirt.

UPDATE: Not only does U2 seem unlikely, it seems impossible. (thx anon)

UPDATE 2: jojo says "its Mary J Blige and Sarah Mclachlan together ...not joking"

Anyone know if a band is playing, and if so who?

North vs. South Brooklyn

“No question about it—it’s hipper,” said Michael Brooks, 30, over the phone, of North Brooklyn. He’s a project manager with the Developers Group, the company that’s bringing high-rise condos to the McCarren Park area. “If there’s a hipness meter, Carroll Gardens is not on the same end of the scale as Williamsburg,” he continued. “There’s a lifestyle in Williamsburg. It’s become a place that people want to identify themselves with, being in a place that feels like everything is happening. It’s just a moment—there’s a moment in Williamsburg right now.” [New York Observer] (via Gothamist)

Antony news & more pics from Hiro Ballroom

The latest press release from record label Secret Canadian was excuse enough. I've pasted it below....

ANTONY Collaborations, Duets, Film Appearances and Live Shows Announced

In the wake of his I AM A BIRD NOW album, Antony has been working on a multitude of collaborations, film projects and live events. He co-produced and performed on the new album by Little Annie called SONGS FROM THE COAL MINE CANARY (Durtro/Jnana). Midway reopens, Ratex X resumes, Rated X ends

Peppermint Gummybear First Tricia Romano wrote, "Those who looked around might have been confused to see Michael T sitting in the corner, as Saturday is also the night for his newly restarted weekly Rated X. But just a few minutes earlier at Midway (formerly Scenic), witnesses report, Michael T and his co-DJ, Theo, along with their host, Peppermint Gummybear, had staged a walkout. After a dispute with a patron and another over the guest list, Peppermint led the crowd in a chant of 'fuck you' directed at the bar's owners (who, Fly Life readers might remember, were briefly considering booting the party over its risque nature). The bartenders, DJs, performers, and crowd swiftly exited the premises. (Neither Michael T or Theo returned requests for comment)."

Then Shaw Promotion said, "there will be no Rated X The Panty Party @ Midway this coming Saturday. We have no further info on this matter and will keep you posted as soon as we get a 'statement'." (thx Neuman)

Lifetime played Court Tavern, Bamboozle | playing Bowery Ballroom

"Last weekend, the invigorated Lifetime geared up for the massive Bamboozle festival at the mansion-on-the-hill Meadowlands by watering its old roots in the cramped, dank basement of the Court Tavern, home to many legendary Jersey punk and hardcore shows over the years. No less than a decade ago, Lifetime held court as the Rutger's basement band of choice (after all, 'Theme Song for a New Brunswick Basement Show' wasn't written for nothin'), growing wheels and touring the country multiple times, but always staying the town's house organ and the trusted reference guide to younger N.B. groups such as Thursday and Midtown." [Daily News reporter Andrew Katchen was there]

Ticketweb says tickets go on sale Friday for a July 8th (2006) Lifetime show at Bowery Ballroom in NYC. Full tour info can't be far behind.

Beards, Moustaches, Air Guitar, DJ Aziz, & Charlatans afterparty

Beard BEARDS
The NYC Beard and Moustache Championshipsx" take place tonight (May 16) @ Knitting Factory in NYC. "Among the competitors: World champion Heinz Christophel of Germany, a three-time world champion in the full beard freestyle category, Phil Olsen, manager of the World Beard and Moustache Championships and championship hopeful Jack Passion." [Eyewitness News]. Gothamist interviewed the organizer.

AIR GUITARS
"For 2006, the US Air Guitar Championships has gone nationwide, with 13 regionals across the country. Judging is based on technical prowess, stage presence, and the ever elusive quality of "airness." All guitars must be air — because let’s face it: Anyone can find the right fret on a cardboard mock-up, but it takes serious skill to play the harmonic on the 12th fret of an air Les Paul.....Regional winners compete against defending US champ the "Rockness Monster" at NYC's storied Bowery Ballroom; plus, they have a crack at the Worlds in Oulu, Finland." [San Francisco Guardian]. Satanicide are playing the June 22nd event. Tix are on sale.

AZIZ UNDERRATED
Aziz Ansari is "DJing" upstairs at Pianos tonight (free) Get there early for Cross Pollination (also free).

CHARLATANS AFTERPARTY
Tim Burgess (Charlatans), Oil, and Gerald from Other Music are DJing the Charlatans (show at Webster Hall) NYC afterparty @ Beauty Bar (free)
