Think About Life @ Knitting Factory, NYC | pics
Every time I leave an intimate basement show by an inhibition-less band that connected with the audience (no matter how small) in some sweaty, dancy & violently musical way, I get selfishly nervous that increasing popularity will have them playing larger venues. In turn, part of what made them so magical would be lost. On the other hand, a lot of bands adapt to their new surroundings just fine. This awesome Think About Life show (May 17, 2006) was in the basement of Knitting Factory...
Think About Life started around 1:30 AM, after Art Brut left the larger stage upstairs.

Members of Art Brut, We are Scientists, Heartonastick and Crackers United were among the 30 or so people left watching the late show.
Someone posted a short video clip from this show. Someone else posted a video from one of their recent rowdier Montreal shows. Yeti has MP3s.

Erasure (acoustic) @ Society of Ethical Culture, NYC | pics
Erasure ended their short acoustic tour at the beautiful Society for Ethical Culture building in NYC (May 19, 2006). The ex-church chapel is right on Central Park West. The seats are pews, there's a giant chandelier and angel statues, and a balcony surrounded with all this exquisite wood work.

I realized at the show that I know less of Erasure's music than I thought, but it was still fun to be part of a show with such an enthusiastic crowd in such a weird setting by an iconic 80's British synth-pop group....acoustic.

Neither the pews nor the acoustic-nature of the show stopped people from getting up and dancing to the hits (Chains of Love, Oh Lamour, etc), but the pews were extremely welcomed when they played material from their new acoustic album Union Street.

* They recorded the show in London. You can buy it.
ALSO AT THE SHOW
* The Charisma Chronicles
* Onri le Schwa
* dbbourroughs
* And actually this was their 2nd to last show.
Last time Erasure was in NYC, they played 10 shows in a row at Irving Plaza.

Cate Blanchett playing Bob Dylan in new movie
"The times they are a-changin'. Cate Blanchett, we read from Cannes, is one of a number of actors scheduled to play Bob Dylan in Todd Haynes's forthcoming biopic, writes Michael Billington. If one raises one's eyebrows, it is not at the idea of a woman playing a man. There's a long cinematic tradition of gender-swapping, dating from Garbo happily donning male attire in Queen Christina and Katharine Hepburn masquerading as a boy in Sylvia Scarlett to Hilary Swank in Boys Don't Cry. The only surprise stems from the fact that Blanchett, a statuesque Australian, seems to have little in common physically with the scrawny songster from Duluth." [Guardian]

Frog Eyes @ Mercury Lounge, NYC | pics (night 2)
DOWNLOAD: One in Six Children Will Flee in Boats (MP3)

Carey Mercer (aka Frog Eyes frontman) is a maniac, and I mean that as a compliment. Monday night I only stayed for the first half of Frog Eyes' set after Sunset Rubdown. Last night (May 24, 2006) I left right after Sunset Rubdown, but came back to watch the second half of Frog Eyes. And the second half must be where its at because I couldn't take my eyes off Mercer as he frantically spewed undecipherable genius into the microphone that had me both scared and elated all at once.
NOTE 1: Spencer Krug (Sunset Rubdown, Wolf Parade) played keyboards in Frog Eyes (his old band).
NOTE 2: Frog Eyes' classic albums were recently reissued.

NOTE 3: This was actually the third time I saw Frog Eyes. I remember liking him/them before, but don't remember anything that compared to the magical way he/they closed the set last night.

Sunset Rubdown @ Mercury Lounge, NYC | pics (night 2)
Unfortunately Sunset Rubdown's second of two sold-out shows at Mercury Lounge was plagued by a case of food poisoning (Wed, May 24, 2006). Keyboardist and frontman Spencer Krug ("the guy from Wolf Parade") wouldn't say where he ate the bad food. The restaurant was actually close by and he didn't want to be accused of being slanderous. What's more, he was too sick to drink, and he said he wasn't used to playing sober. ("Isn't that cute, he's an alcoholic", he said pretending to be a crowd member).
They opened strong with a cover of Prince/Sinead's Nothing Compares To You. That replaced the Wolf Parade (and Sunset Rubdown) song they opened with on Monday which overall was the better of the two shows. Wednesday had a few low points.
SOMEBODY GET ME OUT OF HERE

AND: if you haven't heard already, after Ohio, Sunset Rubdown & Frog Eyes played a last minute show at Union Pool in Williamsburg Sunday night. I didn't know until yesterday. Did anyone go?

Lou Reed @ Ground Zero, 7 WTC, NYC | pics & commentary
"After the speeches, several musicians celebrated the opening, including Suzanne Vega and New York icon, singer-songwriter Lou Reed. Reed, performing solo on guitar, sang his classics 'Perfect Day' and 'Sweet Jane' and peppered his act with commentary about the heated New York real estate market and US politics.

'Real estate New York! Ho ho! Who's running the show?' he sang, then took a jab at Republican Senator John McCain for his support of the US role in Iraq. Last week in New York the Arizona senator, who is seen as a strong contender for the 2008 presidential election, voiced his support of the US move as key to the war against terror. ['Have you seen John McCain's speech at the New School? He'll never get elected by anybody over sixth-grade education!' said the rocker." [Yahoo News]

Yahoo left out the parts where Lou suggested all this building cost A LOT of money and assured the crowd he was there for us (not Silverstein). Someone also yelled "Lou Reed for President". Reed jokingly agreed it was a good idea. It wasn't until 3/4 through his two song set that he started talking either, and before that he seemed miserable to be on stage.

Rosanne Cash (& Lyle Lovett) @ Stubb's, Austin, TX (SXSW) | pics
Yesterday I snapped a bunch of pictures of Suzanne Vega, Lou Reed, Citizen Cope, Brazilian Girls, Pharoah's Daughter, Ronan Tynan, and Ollabelle. They all played the free Ground Zero thing. From the night before I have Frog Eyes (who went on after Sunset Rubdown) and Ghostigital (who played Joe's Pub as part of a small tour). Right now I don't have access to the photos though, so here's another "classic" SXSW photo set I had waiting in the wings....
-----
I had a SXSW badge and an hour to kill so I went over to one of the largest of Austin's SXSW outdoor venues (its where the Beastie Boys played) to catch what I think was being billed partially as a "secret show". Rosanne Cash was about to play when I got there, and Pretenders were playing a surprise set later that night. Unfortunately I had to leave before the Pretenders played, but I did get to see Lyle Lovett (who was scheduled to play his own set right after Rosanne) join Rosanne and band on stage for a few songs. I probably never would have gone to a show like this otherwise, so I was psyched for the experience, and it was a good one.

(they say) Beirut was great | more Tour Dates, full band
I didn't get to Mercury Lounge in time to see Beirut's set before Sunset Rubdown, but when I did get there everyone was raving about how great it was, and how much he improved already - self-tuning eukalalies included. They also said the place was packed - possibly more packed than it was for Sunset Rubdown, and definitely WAY more packed than it was for Frog Eyes.
BEIRUT TOUR DATES
June 8th - Joe's Pub w/The Wiyos
June 20th - Northsix (full band, see below)
July 21st - Bowery Ballroom w/Jens Lekman
"While the currently-six-member band will be adeptly playing this coming Monday at Mercury Lounge (opening for Sunset Rubdown and Frog Eyes) and on June 8th at Joe's Pub with The Wiyos, on June 20th, Beirut will be in full bloom. Joining up with the band will be a new brass section, and Jeremy Barnes (Neutral Milk Hotel/A Hawk and A Hacksaw) and Heather Trost (A Hawk and a Hacksaw) whose contributions to the album itself are part of what makes it sound so amazing. This will also be Beirut's first proper headlining show, allowing Zach and the band to fully display a full, rounded live performance. You will also be able to hear them on 93.9 WNYC that day, when they play Soundcheck."

GNARLS BARKLEY @ WEBSTER HALL | MAY 22, 2006

I love "Crazy" as much as the next guy, but I don't really care for the whole Gnarls Barkley album. That's probably why I didn't end up going to their first NYC show at Webster Hall last night (May 22, 2006). 'Pop-Tarded' took the above pic and said was "not the most amazing concert in the world". Musicsnobbery called it "a quick and fun set"

Art Brut played a free Sound Fix Instore
"Not only did they play a full hour-long set, but they didn’t even use the fact that it was a free show in a coffee shop as an excuse to deviate from the AB program. When lead singer Eddie Argos found his mic wasn’t working at the start of the first song, he tossed it aside and shouted all the lyrics to 'Formed a Band' without skipping a beat." [quick brown fox]

(or get it at her MySpace)

Alexandra Scott is a singer-songwriter who relocated to NYC from New Orleans after losing almost everything to hurricane Katrina. She played right before Norah Jones @ Rockwood Music Hall Sunday night (May 21, 2006). And as if her luck wasn't bad enough already, she announced she wouldn't be playing many shows for a while due to an upcoming knee surgery. She is playing a free Cross Pollination show at Pianos on June 11th though.

Nuclear Family @ Southpaw (5th Ave Street Fair), Brooklyn, NY | pics

The 5th Ave Street Fair in Park Slope, Brooklyn was partially ruined by on-again-off-again rain this year (May 21, 2006). Luckily Southpaw offered their space to the bands who were supposed to be playing on a stage outside. I caught some of Park Slope's own Nuclear Family including some nice spoken-word-raps against Ratner and the Nets.
Nuclear Family, or Nuk Fam for short, were Gothamist's band of the week in February. Music @ their Myspace.

RYAN ADAMS @ MERCURY LOUNGE | MAY 21, 2006

Out of the pool of famous NYC singer-songwriters, Norah Jones and Ryan Adams are two of the most likely to be playing a surprise gig in some small club, possibly under a fake name, and possibly in support of one of their not-as-famous musician friends. Last night while I was watching Norah play to about 30 people at Rockwood Music Hall, Amrit Village Indian was right around the corner witnessing Ryan Adams play with Jesse Malin at Mercury Lounge. He wrote about it for Stereogum, and has the rest of the pics at his website.

Axl Rose vs. Tommy Hilfiger | story, video, etc..
As you probably already already heard, Tommy Hilfiger attacked Axl Rose at Rosario Dawson's birthday party last week. As Gawker pointed out, the NY Post ran it as their cover story this weekend.
"I moved his girlfriend's drink so it wouldn't spill," the "Sweet Child O' Mine" singer told Los Angeles radio station KROQ on Friday. "It was the most surreal thing, I think, that's ever happened to me in my life." Listen to Axl tell that to KROQ.

Bjork & Antony on Matmos concept album | Tour Dates, MP3
DOWNLOAD: Roses & Teeth for Ludwig Wittgenstein (MP3)
"More like a portable gallery installation than a mere album, Matmos' The Rose Has Teeth in the Mouth of a Beast is a collection of fascinating, fractured audio and visual portraits of ten prominent gay and lesbian figures, among them writers, philosophers, filmmakers, and musicians." [All Music]
"M.C. Schmidt and Drew Daniel's latest Matmos album includes contributions from Bjork and Antony. Each of the ten tracks focuses on a specific person who has influenced the group in some way, such as William S. Burroughs and Valerie Solanas" [Metacritic]

Imogen Heap caught stealing cookies
"Imogen Heap got herself her in a little trouble in a Knoxville, TN hotel on Wednesday evening. Embarrassed and remorseful, the Queen of Proper told an audience in Atlanta on Friday that she had stolen a cookie box from the reception area of the local Hampton Inn & Suites in a silly, drunken stupor. 'I thought I stopped doing stupid things like that after I turned twelve,' she told the crowd. She explained that after downing a few Jägermeisters together with her tour merchandise manager they had set their sight on getting the cookie box from the hotel reception early in the morning. Together they managed to get the box, and Imogen put it in her suitcase before checking out a few hours later. Little did she know that the innocent burglary was caught on a CCTV security camera. Hotel management called the police who met the singer after her Knoxville gig on Thursday evening to get clarification on what happened. Imogen Heap returned the item and concluded her story that 'the cookie box was escorted safely back to the hotel in the back of the police car.'" [Arjan Writes]

Sloppy Joannes (Norah Jones) @ Rockwood Music Hall, NYC | pics
Last week: El Madmo played the Delancey
This week: The Sloppy Joannes played Rockwood Music Hall.
-----
I wonder if the Village Voice was trying to be funny when they wrote "local gals the Sloppy Joannes are having fun, and it’s refreshing that every new gal group doesn’t have to sound like Tori Amos or Norah Jones." It's possible they just didn't know that 10-time Grammy award winner Norah Jones is actually IN the Sloppy Joannes (not to be confused with El Madmo). Singer-songwriter Sasha Dobson and Norah's backup singer Daru Oda are the other two members of the band that played last night (May 21, 2006) at Rockwood Music Hall in NYC.

Like her band The Little Willies, The Sloppy Joannes are a country-tinged act. Wes (who was sitting next to me) said they played "a lovely collection of country-tinged diddies putting the spotlight on some real crafty songwriting". The crowd was being quiet & attentive, so Sasha encouraged everyone to get a little rowdier. "We play in a pool hall every Saturday night", they said, "We're used to it" (I'm not sure which pool hall).
Norah played lead guitar and lent backup vocals. The set highlight was a Hawaiian number that featured Daru on 'lead vocals' and 'tricky Hawaiian word pronunciation'. They played a bunch of cover in addition to some live material.

there's no Sloppy Joannes website, but I believe you might catch them this Wednesday night (May 24, 2006) @ Rodeo Bar in Manhattan.

Alexandra Scott played right before the Sloppy Joannes and is definitely worth a listen. Check out the Madonna cover streaming on her MySpace.

NPR tells why tickets sell out so quickly
"Fans of Madonna, Radiohead and Bruce Springsteen sometimes find that getting tickets for upcoming concerts a little frustrating. Often, within hours -- or even minutes -- of tickets going sale, breathless reports indicate the shows have already sold out. But can concerts really sell out in 10 minutes? Slate senior editor Andy Bowers explains." [NPR] (via the Modern Age)

Sunset Rubdown & Frog Eyes | border problems, but NYC shows will happen
"Frog Eyes and Sunset Rubdown are off the bill for the show tonight (May 19) at the Opera House. Islands, Cadence Weapon and Busdriver are still playing, but this makes much less of a megashow. The reason is bizarrely fucked: These two Canadian bands are somehow not being readmitted to Canada after their dates south of the border. They are being detained by the U.S. government for causes yet unknown. Is that actually legal?" [Zoilus]
LAST MINUTE FROG EYES SHOW IN CLEVELAND (cred)

"Ordinarily, fifteen people showing up for this show would be inexcusable. But given that it was just announced yesterday evening, fifteen was more than adequate. Basically what happened was this: the two bands were going to enter and leave the US several times over the next few weeks (Montreal and Toronto dates were also scheduled), but the United States government had a problem with that so they had the choice of either staying in the US or staying in Canada. Given that a sold-out show in New York City was coming up that would be very hard to reschedule, the choice was a no-brainer." [Good Hodgkins]
Cliff Notes: Canadians not allowed back in Canada, Canadian shows cancelled, last minute U.S. shows added, NYC shows will go on.
