5th Ave Apple Store opening | band playing? U2?

The new apple store in NYC opens on Joey Ramone's birthday, May 19th @ 6PM. A Curbed reader sent in a tip that "Apple has requested that a street (presumably 58th or 59th) be closed for the performance of a major live band". They said their " money is on U2 making an appearance". Apple's website says nothing about a band and it seems unlikely U2 would do this, but as Newyorkology points out, showing up will at least get you a free t-shirt.

UPDATE: Not only does U2 seem unlikely, it seems impossible. (thx anon)

UPDATE 2: jojo says "its Mary J Blige and Sarah Mclachlan together ...not joking"

Anyone know if a band is playing, and if so who?

That would be quite a feat seeing as how Bono is in Rwanda today on another African tour.

morrissey will perform at this store opening. "as the flames rose to her roman nose, and her ipod started to melt."

I have no idea why, but I always heard that lyric as 'her hearing-aid started to melt" which, I kind of like better than walkman. Or ipod.

BONO IS IN AFRICA RIGHT NOW! WHY ARE YOU CONTINUING TO PROMOTE THIS POINTLESS RUMOR!

Rwanda: Rock star Bono jets in today

are you this desperate for publicity that you're going to keep promoting a bad pointless rumor?

if there is a band playing, it's probably a band currently pimping an album and working with itunes promos - RHCP?

definitely not u2.

Mellow out people! He's just suggesting who it could possibly be, no need to attack. Publicity? please

I work next door so on my way in I asked one of the 15 security guards if they had any info on who the band is tomorrow.

They did not. Store looks cool though.

You're both right cranky and landrew. In the original 1986 version of "Bigmouth Strikes Again" (the song you're quoting from), one verse ends with "her hearing aid started to melt" and another ends with "Walkman" replacing "hearing aid" though the rest of the lyrics you both quoted are identical. In recent years when Morrissey has performed this song live, he has changed "Walkman" to "iPod" to better reflect the times.

its Mary J Blige and Sarah Mclachlan together ...not joking

Sarah is playing Oprah and then flying out to NYC on Friday for the performance.

Mary is in town now and plays Boston on Saturday

Hi Everyone! Remember me? JoJo!! From the hit song "Get out!(leave)". I will be performing at the new Apple Store opening. Steve (Jobs) thought it would be funny and totally ironical.

Sarah McLaughlin? Mary J. Blige? Is the Lilith Fair coming to town or something? What a big yawn.

what about the strokes? i mean, they are playing at joey ramone's bday bash later that night anyway..

Lenny and the squigtones are reuniting as a one-off just for this occasion!

This Apple store is going to be open 24/7/365! Could be a nice place to crash after... wait, are there any happening night spots in the nearby area? The Ramble?

They're going to give away a $1299 Macbook (that's the price of the white Macbook with the SuperDrive without options) every hour for the first 24 hours.

The AP reports that people have already started lining up to get in.

Any update on this????

Posted by dssad | May 19, 2006 2:07 PM

I was there from about 12:45 AM to about 1:05 AM. I asked a couple of employees if there had been a concert outside earlier, and neither of them was aware of one.

One guy near me on the line to get in said he had been there earlier and had met Steve Jobs in the restroom.

i know this is a little late as far as comments about this go...but sarah mclachlan and mary j. blige? that's pretty damn funny if you ask me. i am a closet sarah mclachlan fan...but would singing with mary j. blige give her street cred? well it wasn't true anyway. thanks for the tip jojo. missed you in rv but keep on truckin.
