Haunted pool strikes again, Deerhoof guitarist quits | MP3
"Deerhoof bassist/guitarist Chris Cohen announced yesterday that he is returning to his pre-Deerhoof band the Curtains.....The split was so amicable, in fact, that Deerhoof celebrated by posting a new EP for download on their website. Included are nine songs: four covers (the Beatles, My Bloody Valentine, Canned Heat, and Herman's Hermits) and five live cuts...." [Pitchfork]

I don't even like Deerhoof, but "Bungalow Bill" is brilliant.

How can they give away covers? Don't they have to pay royalties to the songwriters?

why would you quit the band before they tour with radiohead?!

you only have to pay royalties if you make money off of it i believe. but i could be wrong. also they are badasses.

you need to pay royalties on every copy created. easier to measure when manufacturing a cd; not sure how they measure how many copies are created through download, but logic would say they just keep track of how many downloads it gets.
