Circus Magazine

Gawker found out that Circus Magazine editor Gerry Rothberg wrote a letter to his contributors saying, "It is with sadness and a deep sense of loss that I must inform you that I've experienced great financial loss, which includes Circus Magazine. Over the last year, I've tried my best to hold on to Circus Mag, selling all my personal possessions, including my home, pumping the money into the mag. And I've lost all. I've held off contacting people because of the shame and humiliation I've experienced. I'm broke. I feel like Humpty Dumpty who had a great fall."

Did you even know Circus still existed?

Wow. Last time I remember looking at Circus was on a magazine rack at the Brier Patch in Po'keepsie circa '77.

I was slightly disgusted yet unsurprised that the Gawker kids hadn't even heard of Circus. They must've gone to private school or something.

back in 1988, i bought my brother a subscription to Circus for his 13th birthday. Best $20 I ever spent. The Britney Fox spreads were amazing.

I used to work for circus magazine--no big surprise it dissappeared, Jerry seemed like he was trying to run it into the ground. I am highly sceptical that he has sold off all his possessions.

This magazine ripped me off. I paid for a subscription a couple of years ago, never got it, went through 2 higher entities to get my money back but nada.
Rip off customers and ya might have some bad karma.

That totally sucks. I grew up on Circus Magazine in the early 1980's. It always had the best band and the best interviews and by far the best pictures of the band. I will always remember the articles on Ozzy Osbourne in 1983 about the Bark At The Moon album, Motley Crue about the Shout At The Devil album, Iron Maiden, The PowerSlave album, Van Halen and the 1984 album and Anthrax articles. In my opinion Circus blew away Hit Parader and Rolling Stone magazine couldn't even touch it. What a shame to lose such a great magazine.

Was a great Mag, in the 80's, I have every month from about 1983-1989 w/o a page missing.... & a few others in plastic from the 70's, one w/Plant on the front cover w/ Doves.... I will respect that cover for life. Good Job, sorry about the Finances..

Too Bad. Circus was the one true Hard Rock mag. The only one to really cover the great bands.

SAD TO HEAR THIS. I STILL HAVE MANY COPIES FROM THE LATE 70'S- 80'S . I STARTED BUYING THEM WHEN I WAS AROUND 13 YRS OLD. I WAS A HUGE KISS FAN AND ALWAYS RAN DOWN TO THE LOCAL DRUG STORE TO SEE WHO WAS ON THE COVER THAT MONTH....

I found Circus quite splendid compare to the other main stream magazines.

Circus magazine ripped me off. they had a sale going on at the time I think it was like a dollar for a years subscription. No I thought they went out of business a long time ago late 80's early 90's. I never recieved any mags for that subscription. they were not even in stores anymore at that time. Sure was agreat mag though

Were looking for an article with a late 80s band or early 90s band from quincy ill "forever" signed to apple records got a review or article done on them?

Damn, I just came across this. I was an editor at Circus from 86-89. Publisher fired me for freelancing for Spin on the side... best thing that ever happened to me, launched my really fun freelance career in various creative fields. Haven't had a have-to-go-to-office job since. But I had no idea the thing died. It was really cheesy, but it was an awesome job for a young ambitious metalhead. Fond memories all over the place....

i really remember this magazine what a great magazine for us rock n rollers. we had nothin else at the time to give us the new bands and regular bands info really sad
i used to save all mt issues and mom or sisters threw them away whilw i the navy. i had vintage mags. i will not forget circus great mag guys thanks for all the memories.

I worked for Circus and enjoyed it while I did. Jerry really wanted to have this be his legacy, but personally, once the shift in music taste changed, he should have let it go and let it go out with dignity.

Wow, I'm just discovering the defunct status of the publication here 4 years after the fact. I was a subscriber to the mag back in the 70's and used to love the record reviews and the "Back Pages" by Lou O'Neill. I've still held on to many of those old issues from that era. Maybe they'll hold some value in the future.

I KNEW CIRCUS EXISTED! It was one of my fave mags of the 80's and 90's next to Metal Edge.

Man, this is what it is like to begin to get old I suppose. So many people important to me are gone, so many things are fading away. Was it Ratt Poison from a White Snake that killed Circus?
