Sam Roberts on being unknown in the States, the Canadian scene, & record labels | Tour Dates

DOWNLOAD: "The Gate" (MP3)

Sam Roberts "Sam Roberts (& band) opened for the Stills two nights in a row at Mercury Lounge in April. I went the second night, but missed Sam despite the good reviews that almost motiviated me to get there on time. My only glimpse came when Sam joined the Stills on stage for a song. A few days ago Same came back to headline his own show in the same small room.

In comments, in coversations, and in articles, everyone always said the same thing. Sam is "huge in Canada". Sam says....

"It's nice to be able to live two realities," Roberts said of the dichotomy of being huge stars in Canada and virtual unknowns in the U.S. "To have fans of one variety [in Canada] and then come down and we're the underdogs ... in the U.S., it really is a clean slate for us down there. We get to carve a future for ourselves."

MTV's got an interesting interview.

Sam is touring with Slow Runner in June. He'll be at Maxwell's in Hoboken on June 12th. Extrawack has those dates.

Canada's sexiest rocker? He's not sexier than Carl Newman.

Having gone to school in Buffalo NY, I've heard a lot of Sam on Canadian radio out of Toronto, as far back as 3 years ago.

He's got an extremely cathcy sound, with imeddiately identifiable riffs. Kicks Sloan's ass, IMO.

some canadian friends of mine asked me if i liked Sam Roberts, whose claim to fame is supposedly that he's "famous for being Canadian." i'm not really sure what that means.

i agree with that completely. it's a shame that the last one was largely overlooked by our southern neighbours.

Saw him at CMJ at the Mercury Lounge last Semptember. I went there to see Viva Voce that night and he played before them. I didn't even know who he was at that time, but he and his band sounded great.

I went and saw him headlining the Mercury Lounge and the room was filled with Canadians who don't know how to attend a show: a gaggle of girls who thought throwing their hair in people's faces and reaching over strangers was cool and a woman with a Canadian flag who threw up on the floor next to me a few songs in. Lovely.

Plus, I really don't get the fuss over the music. I am guessing from the comments above that they were playing material from the newer album. I found it to be radio-friendly, feel-good, easy-going rock that's pretty much contentless, with trite and uninspiring lyrics.
