according to the ad in the Village Voice, Awesome Color is opening the 8/12 show, not Blood on the Wall.

thx, fixed

I hope Sonic Youth close these shows.

Posted by danfun | May 31, 2006 2:38 PM

Awesome. I got 2 for the 11th show. Still doesn't make up for the fact that I can't see them at CBGBs, but I'll take it.

Posted by Jim | May 31, 2006 2:59 PM

35 bux?? (which probably end up being about 50 w/ ticketmaster)outdoor summer concerts are supposed to be cheep- or even better, free!

Posted by Emily | May 31, 2006 3:25 PM

Since when are summer shows suppose to be cheap/free. If you don't want to pay, don't go.

Posted by danfun | May 31, 2006 3:28 PM

I'm sure there will be a fair share of hipster fence jumpers.
It'll be interesting how they run events in that setting.

Posted by rescueblues | May 31, 2006 4:44 PM

can you take the train there?

Posted by matt | May 31, 2006 6:11 PM

It's 2 blocks from the G-Nassau Ave stop.

Posted by rescueblues | May 31, 2006 6:29 PM

Not paying, not going. Emily's right: You have an outdoor show in August where you're going to pack your fans into an unairconditioned concrete hole, you don't bilk them.

It's exploitive, and Ron Delsener's got enough money.

Posted by J | May 31, 2006 6:32 PM

It's also not too far from the L.

The prices aren't too outrageous, and are typical for most shows in the city these days. (those thirty for neko case is stretching it). it would of been nice if the yeah yeah yeahs were free though. i mean this supposedly is the neighborhood that got them big.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2006 6:38 PM

are tickets on sale for neko/ joanna?

Posted by nick | May 31, 2006 7:07 PM

people: the best two bands are free!

Posted by mm | June 2, 2006 10:18 AM

This may already have been discussed, but is it really true that Clear Channel now owns the McCarren Park pool?

Posted by jb | June 5, 2006 11:55 PM

>You have an outdoor show in August where you're
>going to pack your fans into an unairconditioned
>concrete hole, you don't bilk them.

You left out the fact that the fans may get rained on.

Posted by Sam Champion (the meteorologist, not the band) | June 6, 2006 12:05 AM

city of nyc owns the pool. shows are being done with a ticket to help generate money for eventually redoing the pool. not everything is free and it's hardly explotive when the pool was just sitting there empty, with nothing being done to help. go, don't go, at least someone is trying to do something to help.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2006 2:59 PM

>>shows are being done with a ticket to help generate money for eventually redoing the pool

You're talking about the $1 per-ticket "building facility charge" that goes along with the $34 ticket price (and, if you charge online, the $8.45 per-ticket convenience charge)?

Posted by J | June 6, 2006 4:03 PM

oh snap!

served.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2006 4:08 PM

Everyone is bitching about the cost of tickets. Get over it, get a job, or sit across the street and listen for free.

Being born and raised in Greenpoint, I am happy they are finally doing something with the pool. All of you "professional protestors" who have lived there for only a couple of months/years need to stop pretending you are cool and move back to your little town in middle america and shut the F up!

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2006 5:10 PM

I will not shut the f up. I'm bitching about the cost of tickets because promoters are constantly trying to push ticket prices up across the board. Delsener & Co are obfuscating their profiteering behind a "community project" so they can start charging $30/a night at Irving Plaza for mid-line acts. They're trying to find out just how much you're will pay justthisonce, and then they're going to charge that all the time.

If bands hear people complaining -- or, more importantly, if concertgoers hear other concertgoers complaining -- people will realize these prices are unacceptable. Otherwise, you can quietly be sheep, eat whatever shit the farmer shovels down your throat and wonder why, in five years, they're charging you $75 to see Neko Case.

Posted by J | June 6, 2006 5:23 PM

Assuming, of course, that in five years, Neko Case won't have gotten so popular that tickets to her shows cost $75 anyway.

Posted by Bill Bored | June 6, 2006 5:53 PM

J is right.

Just look at the Across the Narrows fiasco last year. $50 tix, no one goes. Well, that and a lot of the bands sucked, but regardless. If they had charged the amount that the Pitchfork fest are charging the place would have been PACKED.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2006 6:07 PM

Is there any way to buy tickets for these shows at a box office and avoid the outrageous Ticketmaster surchage? Also, how do you get to McCarren Park Pool by subway? Thanks, I just moved to NYC, not too familiar with Williamsburg

Posted by Alex | June 7, 2006 10:04 AM

Unfortunately there are too many people in NYC who want to go to shows thus they will sell out; at crazy prices. I for one wanted to go to this gig but refused due to price. Not that I can't afford it; but matter of principle. Over $20 to hang outside in the depths of summer in Greenpoint is ridiculous. Even to see great acts. Fuck the promoters. And I could give a shit about contributing financially to the development of Brooklyn. I think it'll do just fine without my support.

Posted by K | June 7, 2006 10:52 AM

If it rains..does it turn into a pool again ?

Posted by me | June 7, 2006 11:01 AM

tickets can be bought for no service charge at the irving plaza box office for the actual price. you can also buy at earwax on bedford but they are charging $2 a ticket extra as a service charge.

to get to the pool you can take either the L train to Bedford for Lorimer and it is a short walk from there or you can take the G to Lorimer- depending on where you are of course.

Are you Oliver Stone or something? Maybe you should make a movie with those ideas! The only reason the prices are higher is the cost of the space or gurantee. I'm not a promoter, but i do know that and so would you if you ever produced a show, you would know that. Save the "Master Plan" theories for X-Files website.

And for that matter, i know for a fact that it is a lot more than than that. 200k was donated to the pool. get off your ass and check the public record, i did.

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2006 2:13 PM

WTF - don't people have better things to complain about. these are concerts, not a cure for cancer. who cares how much tickets are? don't go it you don't like the price or buy them at the box office to avoid the extra charges.

seriously, stop be a d-bag and focus all that negative energy about ticket prices on something that should really matter to you, like your need for a J.O.B.

yah yah yah...this is a rip off. the pool is a cool space, but ticket master prices are outrageous (25% handling fee???) and according to the yeah yeah yeah's site, this is their only gig in NYC this summer. is that right? need to set up own vip lounge on top of the school across the street.

Posted by snUff | June 8, 2006 11:34 PM

obfuscating? you're not even really using that word right, and even if you were, why would you?

terrible conversation

Posted by daniel | June 10, 2006 12:06 AM

what about the playground to the left of the pool.. there is a full view of the pool from there blocked off by only a chain link. are they going to partition it off? the pool is so exposed youd be able to hear the concert totally clear from across the street. way better than sitting outside of summerstage i bet.

Posted by F.F. | July 10, 2006 9:44 PM

Jelly NYC's site says August 13th. Plus, that's a sunday. Looks like TONY has a typo.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2006 10:02 PM

There are no other public parks in NYC where it costs $50 to go to a show. Even the Celebrate Brooklyn shows that are tickted (two, out of a series of , I dunno, fifty?) are less than that--and the money goes to support the other free shows, not to the coffers of a pro-war, antifreespeech profiteeer.

If you want to go to the Clear Channel shows, go, but try to also support all the other cool stuff going on there this summer. Or put on your own event! The more the communty uses the pool, the less chance there is that Clear Channel will have exclusive use next summer.

Posted by Ilovethepool | July 12, 2006 11:22 AM

It is a good point, of course, that people like to be able to choose who to give their money, and that they may not want public resources to be privatized. However, it isn't true that there are no other public parks in NYC where it costs that much for a show. Currently Central Park Summerstage has 4 concerts on Ticketmaster, costing either $30, $35, or $50. Celebrate Brooklyn concerts are not the only ones at Prospect Park Bandshell, currently tickets for the Sugar Water Festival are on sale there for $45 and $70!

Posted by MJK | July 15, 2006 4:33 PM

The reason so many people are complaining about the ticket prices is because the promoter is using this event to give the neighborhood a fake feeling of artistic cred to increase the demand for the high rise condos being built on the perimiter of the park. All of these concerts are real estate promotion, plain and simple. They happened to get good bands but you can see Awesome Color play all around Brooklyn for about $5 at a Todd P show. And BTW, it shouldn't be a suprise that Todd P has been booking good cheap shows in the neighborhood for four years and wasn't approached for any of the Clear Channel concerts in the pool.

I'd recommend that no one reading this blog pay for tickets. Squat an unfinished condo and get a birds eye view. Jump the fence. Support your bands, don't support greedy cultural profiteers.

Posted by Lee | July 15, 2006 11:21 PM

Christ--the righteous Bedford hipsters and their faux causes and by-the-book opinions are enough to make me puke. You'll pay $20 for Sunday brunch, but not $35 for Sonic Youth and YYY's? You'll pay hundreds of dollars to buy clothes that make you look poor, but you complain about this?

Tell you what--apply your reasoning to the rest of your spending habits in life (expensive WillieB rent, designer vintage clothes, imported beer, etc), then maybe it'll mean something.

call me a hater, but im not paying to restore some stupid pool, that was close to keep black ppl away

(I was sitting in The Charleston one afternoon at happy hour last year, talking to a long-time resident who was near me at the bar. The McCarren Park pool came up in conversation and he claimed [proudly] he was part of the effort to close it down back then "one way or the other, to keep the coloreds out." Officials and other people I talked with for the article admitted times were different back then.)

Fine, I'll call you 'stupid'. How do "black ppl" benefit if the pool remains closed?

Posted by Fila is stupid! | August 9, 2006 2:25 PM

Lee... what the hell are you talking about? Why do people like you have to mention Todd P? What makes you think that he knows anything about booking a 5000 person outdoor venue? It's a bit different than booking an illegal warehouse space...
besides... there are so many more qualified booking people in this city than him. anyone can get a shitty pa system in a warehouse and book some "hip" underground bands... what's the big deal? He doesn't even do a good job at that... shows are disorganized, bands always get pissed off... he's declared a genius by idiots like you. Makes a lot of sense...

Posted by J | August 15, 2006 1:25 PM

YO - pool parties are THE most gorgeous gigs of the summer - most are free - bring your hoolahoops - dancing feet - yes, there is beer - yes, ice cream - yes, hot dogs and red bull... what more do you want? beautiful weather - perfect vibe - bring your blankets if you want to sit and stay for the hours... i swear - very worth it.

Posted by scarlet | August 20, 2006 7:20 PM

who's this anonymous lurker on Brooklyn Vegan who always froths at the mouth whenever Todd P gets mentioned?

literally everytime the guy's name comes up, you see almost exactly the same shit talking comments in exactly the same writing style - usually repeatedly posted as if they all are from different people. But never with email addresses or web links.

give it a rest, dude. Todd P's a decent, hard workin' guy putting on good, cheap, fun shows with (god forbid) some politics thrown in. How could that possibly offend you?

Gimme a break. you actually prefer Clear Channel? Sounds like you've got some personal beef, dude -cause that's bullshit.

hey, why do people use the same "they're rich and they shouldn't complain about anyhting" argument whenever someone who lives in "Williamsburg" says anything.

I live on the cheap in Bushwick, you dumbass, but Williamsburg happens to be where good and interesting things go down a lot of the time. I'd live there if I could, but it's too pricey. I would -never- argue that I am not a Williamsburg hipster, though. What the fuck, who do you think you are if you're reading a site called Brooklyn Vegan, for christsake.

I don't eat $20 brunch and I don't wear expensive clothes, and the people who do are not who's arguing that these tickets are too expensive.

The McCarren Park pool tickets are too expensive. There is no debating this - they are a really prohibitive price for a lot of people. $50 for bands who play a lot cheaper usually. Plus - very little of that money is going to pay for or to rehabilitate the pool - which is something we collectively own via our tax dollars.

These people are stealing a public resource from us, end of story. It's a sweetheart deal for them and - hooray for the free shows besides - a shitty financial deal for the city and its residents - us.

Posted by Anonymous | August 21, 2006 7:43 PM

Amen
I agree, though there are a number of rich-kid "hipsters" (more and more lately), the majority of so-called "hipsters" are dirt poor.

Posted by Anonymous | August 21, 2006 9:02 PM

i'm the anonymous lurker "Will". No, I have no personal beef with Todd, been to a bunch of his shows, but I've never met him. That's the first time I posted a comment about him so if there are others, then I guess that means that there are others who aren't so impressed either.
My point was only that just because someone does the same thing that I did when i was 16 years old (booking shows in a warehouse- I did a better job than Todd too), doesn't mean that they are qualified to book a huge, legal, outdoor venue.
By the way, you sound like a cult member- if you love Todd so much, why don't you marry him?

Posted by Joe | August 22, 2006 9:42 AM

"If you love Todd P so much, why don't you marry him?"

are you still 16, or 12?

word to the wise: it immediately looks like you have an personal axe to grind when you police the blogs you leave comments on, checking to make sure nobody challenged what you had to say.

Hmmm... I guess Todd P (and probably lots of other folks) chose not to book *your* band. Heartbreaking.

Posted by Andy | August 22, 2006 10:40 AM

in his defense, i chuckled at that "why don't you marry him?" comment. he obviously wasn't serious... just sayin'

Can tickets for the Ladytron and Chemical Brothers show be purchased at McCarren Pool (like at the doors/gates)? I have never been there, and I am not going to pay the crazy service fee (including printing fee at this point) that TicketWeb is charging, but I am willing to pay $45 at most.

I heard this show is far from selling out, anyone know if that is true or not?

Thanks.
