Sunset Rubdown & Frog Eyes | border problems, but NYC shows will happen

"Frog Eyes and Sunset Rubdown are off the bill for the show tonight (May 19) at the Opera House. Islands, Cadence Weapon and Busdriver are still playing, but this makes much less of a megashow. The reason is bizarrely fucked: These two Canadian bands are somehow not being readmitted to Canada after their dates south of the border. They are being detained by the U.S. government for causes yet unknown. Is that actually legal?" [Zoilus]

LAST MINUTE FROG EYES SHOW IN CLEVELAND (cred)
Frog Eyes in Ohio

"Ordinarily, fifteen people showing up for this show would be inexcusable. But given that it was just announced yesterday evening, fifteen was more than adequate. Basically what happened was this: the two bands were going to enter and leave the US several times over the next few weeks (Montreal and Toronto dates were also scheduled), but the United States government had a problem with that so they had the choice of either staying in the US or staying in Canada. Given that a sold-out show in New York City was coming up that would be very hard to reschedule, the choice was a no-brainer." [Good Hodgkins]

Cliff Notes: Canadians not allowed back in Canada, Canadian shows cancelled, last minute U.S. shows added, NYC shows will go on.

no brainer? they had a sold out show in toronto that holds more than double the mercury lounge, THAT was the no brainer!.... angry torontonian

I can't believe how many bands are having these sorts of border problems. You'd think all this would be worked out in advance.

yes. they could call up the president, explain to him that they were named best new music on pitchfork media, and he would make sure air force one was free to carry them safely across the border.

Hey, angry torontonian: Not only is the US dollar worth more than the Canadian dollar, the U.S. income tax rate for visiting foreigners must be a lot less than the Canadian income tax rate for Canadian residents, especially since your government has to pay for your universal healthcare.

>>a sold out show in toronto that holds more than double the mercury lounge, THAT was the no brainer!

with all due respect to Canada, the exposure of playing in New York is a pretty big deal. Not that toronto isn't, but you can expect 67 (or more) various websites reporting back on this week's shows.

get over yourself Toronto...dont you see the future in touring? Only tour New York City...Art Brut has already starting doing it.

american, have u checked the exchange rates lately? your dollar is plumting, its toliet paper, the canadian dollar is almost worth the same thing bc urs keeps falling. and as for healthcare, thats coming to an end soon, alberta already ok'd private health care and doctors are allowed private practices across the country. anything else?

Posted by angry torontonian | May 22, 2006 1:12 PM

have no fear canadians...montreal is being rescheduled for a week or two after the last show of the tour (which is friday the 26th)...no idea about toronto though...

sunset rubdown was RIDICULOUSLY good tonight at the merc. scrounge around on craigslist and get yourself some tickets for wednesday, because this will blow your mind. started with a solo spencer piano version of "i'll believe in anything," and built from there all the way to a (surprisingly) rocking version of "shut up i am dreaming." i love the album, but the ENERGY of this live show blew me away tonight.

Yes, Sunset Rubdown was pretty great tonight at Mercury, but the bigger story was how unbelievably awful Frog Eyes was -- actually, to be fair, how unbelievably awful Frog Eyes frontman Carey Mercer was. Mercer appeared to be coked out of his mind, or at least I hope there was a chemical reason for his assault on the crowd. Everyone else in the band looked horrified -- Spencer Krug kept sheepishly signaling for the booth to turn Mercer's mike and guitar down and the bassist actually looked like he was going to punch Mercer in the face. A good portion of the crowd left quickly. It was honestly one of the worst sets I've ever heard a good band play. Tell me someone is going to cover this...

ItÒs simple but effective. They also do other genres. Adolescent poetry is worth a look.

With a turn she left the blushing girl at the counter, but not before saying in a reassuring tone, ÓYou really should take him up on the offer. He is very good at itÔ
