Sunset Rubdown @ Mercury Lounge, NYC | pics (night 2)
Unfortunately Sunset Rubdown's second of two sold-out shows at Mercury Lounge was plagued by a case of food poisoning (Wed, May 24, 2006). Keyboardist and frontman Spencer Krug ("the guy from Wolf Parade") wouldn't say where he ate the bad food. The restaurant was actually close by and he didn't want to be accused of being slanderous. What's more, he was too sick to drink, and he said he wasn't used to playing sober. ("Isn't that cute, he's an alcoholic", he said pretending to be a crowd member).
They opened strong with a cover of Prince/Sinead's Nothing Compares To You. That replaced the Wolf Parade (and Sunset Rubdown) song they opened with on Monday which overall was the better of the two shows. Wednesday had a few low points.
SOMEBODY GET ME OUT OF HERE

AND: if you haven't heard already, after Ohio, Sunset Rubdown & Frog Eyes played a last minute show at Union Pool in Williamsburg Sunday night. I didn't know until yesterday. Did anyone go?

um, what low points? amazing set, astonishing, considering he had been ill the entire day with food poisoning.

show was absolutely amazing, but I was stuck next to the most obnoxious drunks on earth. really ruined a good part of the show for me.

spencer was slamming back gin and tonic before the show, so i think his definition of sober is a very creative one. absolutely amazing show though! i don't know what low points there are to speak of -- quality was astounding, sound was excellent. they put on one hell of a show, period, never mind the fact that they were ill. maybe just that beirut's performance made for a better opening?

i think i may have been one of the "most obnoxious drunks on earth". but i still love myself.

drunks are always in the audience, but rarely is the band they're distracting from so spectacular.

I would say one low point was the fact that no one moved/danced the entire set. but that is just my opinion.

Yeah, I didn't quite understand that. Everyone seemed really excited, yet very few moved. Maybe we needed MORE obnoxious drunks?

Did the people who are complaining about people not dancing, dance themselves? Or does it just upset you that others weren't dancing?

danfun, you seem to always register this complaint. it's just a sad fact that most people at concerts in nyc don't dance. but there were several of us dancing at the foot of the stage last evening.
bv's post above seems to suggest that the low points were within the set, the band. one could complain about most audiences at any given show.

People dance at shows? Are we using a really loose interpretation of the word "dance"? Do you mean moving one's head up and down? People don't dance at shows in any city. This is indie rock for christ sakes.

I don't think peope always have to "dance" but I did feel like last night it would have been a really good evening to give something back to the band. They struggled through being ill and crowd did just stand there.

i'm tired of going to shows were kids are afraid to move. stop being so obsessed with being cool and move a little!
