(they say) Beirut was great | more Tour Dates, full band

I didn't get to Mercury Lounge in time to see Beirut's set before Sunset Rubdown, but when I did get there everyone was raving about how great it was, and how much he improved already - self-tuning eukalalies included. They also said the place was packed - possibly more packed than it was for Sunset Rubdown, and definitely WAY more packed than it was for Frog Eyes.

BEIRUT TOUR DATES
June 8th - Joe's Pub w/The Wiyos
June 20th - Northsix (full band, see below)
July 21st - Bowery Ballroom w/Jens Lekman

"While the currently-six-member band will be adeptly playing this coming Monday at Mercury Lounge (opening for Sunset Rubdown and Frog Eyes) and on June 8th at Joe's Pub with The Wiyos, on June 20th, Beirut will be in full bloom. Joining up with the band will be a new brass section, and Jeremy Barnes (Neutral Milk Hotel/A Hawk and A Hacksaw) and Heather Trost (A Hawk and a Hacksaw) whose contributions to the album itself are part of what makes it sound so amazing. This will also be Beirut's first proper headlining show, allowing Zach and the band to fully display a full, rounded live performance. You will also be able to hear them on 93.9 WNYC that day, when they play Soundcheck."

(Gulp) I confess, I don't get it. Does anyone else hear a poor man's Josh Groban?

Beirut's set started at pretty much 9PM on the dot. And the set was fairly short, maybe 6,7 songs(?); Zach apologized and asked people to give 'em a break since they'd barely played together as yet. Also, yes, the new ukes seemed to have done their job, as there was none of that long-tuning-pauses-between-songs thing going on that people reported before. All in all, they did sound pretty damn good, but I'm very anxious to hear them again after they've been touring together for a month or two; should be *amazing* then.

The city's gonna get all Beirut'd out by the time July rolls around! Joe's Pub, Other Music, Soundfix, WNYC's Soundcheck, Northsix, jesus!

And nice to see that Soundfix now lets you subscribe to their events calendar via RSS or iCal, powered by Eventful. I wish more venues would do that.
