Every time I leave an intimate basement show by an inhibition-less band that connected with the audience (no matter how small) in some sweaty, dancy & violently musical way, I get selfishly nervous that increasing popularity will have them playing larger venues. In turn, part of what made them so magical would be lost. On the other hand, a lot of bands adapt to their new surroundings just fine. This awesome Think About Life show (May 17, 2006) was in the basement of Knitting Factory...

Think About Life

Think About Life started around 1:30 AM, after Art Brut left the larger stage upstairs.

Members of Art Brut, We are Scientists, Heartonastick and Crackers United were among the 30 or so people left watching the late show.

Someone posted a short video clip from this show. Someone else posted a video from one of their recent rowdier Montreal shows. Yeti has MP3s.

There's also Think About Lifea great video that was done from their CD release in Montreal a few weeks ago, which kind of captures what they're about.

given YOUR exponentially increasing popularity, one would think that if you were worried about yr fave band blowing up maybe you wouldn't do a 17 picture spotlight on them.

let's face it: CYSHY Beirut Art Brut etc etc are just today's pop stars. This isn't underground or expiremental music anymore, it's just a bunch of cookie-cutter beards & haircuts playing boring, predictable musix.

ima go listen to the new Growing album

MORE IMPORTANTLY - at the 2:20 mark you can catch a glimpse of Alden (ex-Unicorns), the forgotten Islander! Lookin' fresh

Saw these guys at Northsix last October. They opened for Wolf Parade and they killed, only they didn't have their usual lead singer. They sounded like the most unexpected dance eruption, only no one knew what the hell to do. You couldn't help but bop you're head, you know, but what we all were listening to sounded so unabashedly amatuer, we were all kind of in shock, in spite of the manic energy and playfulness of their set.

"basement show" usually doesn't refer to the 'basement' of a club, FYI

people with 'selfish nervousness' over bands getting too big need to get a life

1) downtairs at knitting factory makes it feel like a basement show because there's no stage, but you're right:

2) "selfish nervousness" - I was just making a point, but thanks for the suggestion. I'll go look for a life now.
