The NY Times does McCarren Pool, outdoor concerts
Mr. Kinken of Live Nation said that he was expecting similar kinds of serendipity with the McCarren pool. Because of its large size and uncomplicated layout, he said, staging concerts there should be relatively easy. There are convenient spots to put the stage — on the side of the pool, raised just a foot above the ground — as well as a backstage area, concessions and portable toilets. The speaker cabinets will be angled down toward the crowd, to minimize echo off the walls.
The bands, he said, would do the rest. "It will be their manifest destiny to fill up the space," he said. "They'll make that room feel like it's intimate. They'll make it their own, fill it up with sound." [NY Times] (thx all)

David Johansen played with Dr. John
David Johansen – without either Poindexter persona or Doll drag – got a pair of tunes that would have fit perfectly in either: “Personality” (“When Salome danced/and had the boys entranced/no doubt it must have been easy to see/that she knew how to use her/personality”) and a rather over-funked “Must’ve Been a Beautiful Baby” (the second line became “You musta been a hip little kid”). THE BALLET

RAMESH FROM VOXTROT

TOKYO POLICE CLUB

LAND OF TALK

Thanks to everyone who attended, played, DJd, did sound, provided the venue, worked the bar, guarded the door, etc... It was a great night. Thanks to Bao Nguyen for being the official show photographer. The rest of his pics are up on Flickr.
One of the biggest highlights of the evening for me was watching Tokyo Police Club deliver their strongest performance I've seen yet (3rd time I've seen them). They seemed to be more in their element, and the crowd was really into it.....except Ryspace who was pissed he missed part of Ramesh's set. He has a recap and audio from the evening.
Sweatermusic said TPC were just what they were "looking for to forget the sweaty garage and rock".
" it was just really good, really solid, serious (and seriously good at grit and minors) sort of rock, solid the way its hard-but-fun to pick a single off a really excellent album, solid the way it platonically Should Be, you know, right." [if.so]
WesX3 said, "The Ballet was good. There were no stage lights in this venue so that was a bit odd but fitting to their hushed but zippy music." Bed for the scraping agrees that "it was really dark in there".
"The music was great with Land of Talk being my favorite of the night." [Wes wrote another nice recap]
Like Bushwick is Beautiful, I'm still recovering.

Keren Ann - "Chelsea Hotel" [more here]
Regina Spektor - "Chelsea Hotel"
The Strokes & Regina Spektor - "Post Modern Girls"
("Chelsea Hotel is a Leonard Cohen song)
"On her new release (one of my favorite albums of the year), Begin to Hope, singer, songwriter and pianist Regina Spektor sings in her native Russian for the first time." [NPR]
"The Strokes, pals who famously gave Spektor her first big break by bringing her on tour as an opener, were among her inspirations. 'The thing that blew my mind first hearing the Strokes was that they were the closest I had heard rock come to classical,' she says. 'Their music is extraordinarily orderly and composed. It's almost like Mozart.' When 'Better,' Hope's first single, needed some oomph, Strokes guitarist Nick Valensi stepped in and lent the song its precise, driving kick." [Village Voice]
"A new film about Leonard Cohen does a remarkable thing: it gets him to talk. And what a pleasure it is. Here's Cohen, for example, on his long-standing reputation as a ladies' man - it was, he says, 'a joke. It caused me to laugh bitterly the 10,000 nights I spent alone.'" [Telegraph]

An Interview with Zach Condon & Jason of Beirut
DOWNLOAD: Postcards From Italy (MP3)
Help me welcome interviewer Mike to BrooklynVegan. Mike set up this interview with Beirut's Zach Condon and Jason (guitar & keyboards) with the help of Ben from BadaBing Records (who we'd like to give special thanks).
BEIRUT @ NORTHSIX (more)

Mike "caught up with them (Beirut) the day after they played two shows at the Lily Pad in Cambridge (June 24, 2006). The venue was small and the line snaked around the block. They ended up playing two shows: one at 11:30 and another at 12:45." Mike, Zach and Jason "tried to grab some beers but lack of proper I.D.'s prevented that" so they "ended up grabbing a six pack and did the interview on a friends porch"...
BrooklynVegan Mike: How did you hook up with BaDaBing?
Zach: Jeremy lives in Albuquerque, which a lot of people don't know. The funny thing about us is that we both lived in Albuquerque and are from Albuquerque, and that's what our bios say about us…but neither of us played in Albuquerque, ever. The one show we did do, a friend of Jeremy's convinced him "Come on Jeremy, play a show in your hometown," so he did. They were looking around for people with similar musical aspirations and that's how they found me. Somebody heard that I was doing gypsy-related stuff as well and that's how we hooked up. I was doing karaoke to Gulag Orkestar stuff, basically. He heard it and liked it and eventually gave the CD to Ben [Goldberg, BaDaBing Records] and he agreed to do drums on it.
BrooklynVegan Mike: So how long has the album material been done, like the songs and whatnot?
Zach: About this time last year. About a month from a year, yeah.
BrooklynVegan Mike: How do you feel about people making Neutral Milk Hotel comparisons? Does that bother you?
Zach: It doesn't bother me. They're a great band. I don't really see what the big complaint is about comparisons. Unless, of course, you get compared to a band you hate [laughs].
BrooklynVegan Mike: Do you think that perhaps people are looking too much into the music, to draw those parallels?
Zach: To an extent, yeah. But the thing is we share so much aesthetically with them, you know? I'm not embarrassed to say that, especially with the guilt by association with Jeremy and all. I'm not afraid to admit that there is some aesthetic of theirs that I really love. Sure, it can be tiring. I don't want to be pigeonholed.
BrooklynVegan Mike: Do you have any thoughts/feelings/opinions on the whole blog/pitchfork culture that has created this excitement?
Zach: My general answer to that is I never took the internet seriously until about a month ago when I realized what it could do for me [laughs]. What do you think Jason?
Jason: That sounds right. I still don't really understand it.
Zach: I don't think any of us in the band…like Ben would call us up and be like "Yeah, another blog wrote about your album and I'm like…..
BrooklynVegan Mike: And….? [laughs]
Zach: Right [laughs]. I thought it was like Myspace blogs or something.
BrooklynVegan Mike: I first read about you on Gorilla Vs. Bear. I know a lot of people did. When I talked to Ben, he told me that he bent over backwards to get mainstream press to pay any attention to the album and no one would.
Zach: No one would. This is how it works now. The Internet introduces new things and discovers them and everyone else follows suit. The major publications kind of give the last word on it, instead of vice versa.
BrooklynVegan Mike: At the end of the day it still seems like Pitchfork is the tastemaker. Sometimes blogs will push a band but if for some reason Pitchfork doesn't like it, it all dies.
Zach: Totally. But they didn't hurt it, and they didn't fuel it, which is fine by me. I don't want to be playing sold out Bowery shows within a month of the release. We have to do a few of the shows like last night to get our feet on the ground.
BrooklynVegan Mike:So you don't have a problem building a name for yourself slowly?
Jason: It has not been that slow [laughs].
Zach: It hasn't been a slow building tour across the U.S. Our first show was at the Knitting Factory and that was a disaster. A total disaster. Worse then this one. Our second show was the Mercury Lounge and that one was flawless. It sounded amazing.
Jason: We have cut out three really good shows so far.
Zach: Yeah. The Northsix show was amazing. You could hear a pin drop. It was like an orchestra was on stage. It was totally sold out. If they could all be like that. It is weird with all of the lineup changes.
BrooklynVegan Mike: Has the lineup been finalized?
Zach: To some extent. The core has been.
BrooklynVegan Mike: You made a joke last night about the wind section being m.i.a.. Were there really people missing last night?
Zach: Yeah The guy that plays baritone sax, clarinet, glockenspiel, mandolin, and ukulele. These are the kind of people I need in my band because those are the instruments I play and I'm not an octopus. I can't do it all.
BrooklynVegan Mike: What was funny was at the second show last night you guys were kind of off the set list so whenever you picked a song there would be a flurry of movement behind you and people shouting "is there mandolin in this song? Is there glockenspiel?" [laughs].
Zach: This guy [pointing to Jason] signed on…and he's a friend of my brothers and he's like "I play guitar," and I'm like "I don't think that will work, but come on, join the band. We'll see what works."
Jason: He lets me play guitar on two songs now, I think [laughs]. And now I play grand piano.
Zach: He never touched a piano until yesterday.
BrooklynVegan Mike: Really?
Jason: I've played keyboards, but until last night I had never played on an actual piano.
Zach: He was bothered by the weighed keys. "I…can't…do it." [laughs]. We were gonna set the keyboard on top of the grand piano and just make it look like he was playing a piano.
Jason: But we couldn't balance it on the keys.
BrooklynVegan Mike: About the band, the enormity of it, did it really just come together, like a ramshackle approach?
Zach: Yeah. That was kind of the idea. I kind of wanted a ramshackle orchestra. This is gonna sound like a romantic story, but when I was in Paris I saw this band of kids that all bought pawn shop instruments like busted up tubas and trumpets and stuff, and they would all wander around Paris, playing. They weren't great musicians or anything, but it sounded awesome and was a lot of fun. I kind of wanted to mimic that idea. That's why I'm working with…basically we are all amateurs. No way in hell could I ever revert back to a guitar-bass-drum kind of band. I can't write for that. I don't really even like the sound that much.
BrooklynVegan Mike: You debuted one new song last night. Do you have another album already planned?
Zach: I'm taking a month off of shows right now and record an e.p. for possibly for a British single and possibly a single here in the U.S. I write a lot of stuff and when I do an album I usually cut out about 90% of it.
BrooklynVegan Mike: Will any future album sound or have the same aesthetic as Gulag Orkestar?
Zach: I don't think so. I mean, it will still be multi-instrumental, but I don't think it will be in the style of Gulag. That was the phase of my life I was in at the time. I'm really not there right now. I write a lot so it is whatever it is at that time.
BrooklynVegan Mike: Now I have read about these other albums, like a doo-wop album and an electronica album. Will we ever be able to hear those?
Zach: It's funny because those are the same two albums that people bring up. I did those when I was like, 14. Just me in my bedroom kind of stuff.
BrooklynVegan Mike: We kind of came in conflict with it today, but with your age do you have trouble with clubs, grabbing a beer or people taking you seriously?
Zach: Not in Brooklyn.
Jason: Also, his age never changes. He's still 19.
Zach: I'm 20 now but everyone thinks I'm still 19. We've decided we're gonna start celebrating my birthday's backwards from now. Next year I will be 19, the year after, 18. In New York, I don't get any crap at all. Here I feel like a 20 year old.
BrooklynVegan Mike: From a marketing standpoint, you can understand why they want to keep pushing 19. That's still a teenager.
Zach: Why not? That seems crazy, but not to me.
BrooklynVegan Mike: You mentioned how you kind of came up with the idea for the sound, travelling around in Europe and such. I have also read that all of that is B.S. and that you are a guy who never left his bedroom in Albuquerque, New Mexico until just recently.
Zach: I didn't realize I had so much mystique, on a P.R. level.
BrooklynVegan Mike: One of the more fascinating things about Internet hype is because there is no "true source," it is very easy to create and mix up stories.
Zach: Yeah, have you seen my name go through the transformation from Zach Condron to Zach Condlin…?
Jason: To Zach Condom….
Zach: Even the Village Voice totally jumbled it up.
Are you looking for the honest story? Yeah, I travelled. What I think it is they mix up is that they want this big, fantastical story of this big voyage through Europe, of soul searching and finding this music, and having a purpose in life. But it wasn't like that. It was me being a 17, 18 year old kid, and just being a hooligan in Europe, drinking and hanging out with kids on the riverside and not doing anything responsible or that interesting for that matter. I did discover the sound when I was over there, so it's a half truth but I don't feel like pushing the romantic aspect of it.
BrooklynVegan Mike: Have you had any vocal training? How did the voice come about?
Zach: Almost by accident. I think I was trying to sing along to a lot Magnetic Fields when I was 15. I had this keyboard and I wrote this song and I wanted my friend to sing on it but he was kind of an emo singer, and I realized it was a dumb idea. Literally, I tried and it worked. It has developed since then. It just came naturally. I haven't had a day of vocal training in my life, although I am thinking about it before I go on tour. It gets exhausted drinking and smoking.
One of the earliest memories with music is I had a Fischer Price Karaoke machine. I was like four or five. And I had this Beach Boys tape that I played to death, from front to back. Eventually, my brother Ryan smashed it because he was sick of hearing it [laughs].
editor's note: Mike and I discussed the questions a bit before the interview. I told him about how, at the Knitting Factory show, Zach said that his Internet celebrity status still wasn't good enough to convince his mom he's doing something right. I think that's where the next question came from.
BrooklynVegan Mike: At the Northsix show, you made a comment about how your mother hasn't accepted/approved of your career choice. Has she come around at all?
Zach: Oh…I don't know. Yeah. Did I even mention that? Of course, my parents never took it seriously, you know? That's the funny thing now because my dad follows me closer than I do. He's calling me up saying, "I heard that you closed your eyes too much. I read it on the internet." I'm like "what the fuck, dad. Four months ago you would have never even, you know, mention the fact that your son makes music in his bedroom." So, that's ironic.
The funnier story is my mom. About a month after the release, when the Pitchfork review came out and some other stuff, and it was starting to look like we were going to be a big deal, and this UK bidding war thing started…and my mom goes "that's so great. I heard about your album." And then she said, "do you sing on it?" I was like, "Wow, you really didn't know?"
-----
thx Mike, Zach, Jason, and Ben!

Thom Yorke talks to the LA Times
Asked whether Radiohead would consider distributing its next album independently, Yorke unhesitatingly said yes. "We have two or three options, and that's one," he said. "Once we finish whatever we think is good enough to put out, then we'll start thinking about it. We haven't discussed it a great deal. I would love for us to drop a chemical weapon within the music industry. But I don't see it as our responsibility, either." [LA TIMES]

Sirius Playlist - Week 5

My Tuesday night Sirius radio shows have been all over the place so far. I maybe played one song twice in five weeks, and there have only been a handful of artists who I've played more than once. I think that'll be less-and-less true as weeks go on - partly for my sanity because picking 30-something songs each week, not to mention getting them to Sirius so they can make sure they have them in their system, is a lot of work. What I mean is - they'll probably be more repeats as the weeks go on. That said, here's my June 27, 2006 playlist.
----
I wanted to open with The Ballet because they're what I've been listening to most lately (the four songs I have anyway), and I'm excited to have them playing my show Thursday night @ Syrup Room.
1) The Ballet - I hate the War
Their anti-war song inspired me to play three more.
2) Neil Young - Living With War
3) The Clash - The Call Up
4) Billy Bragg - The Marching Song of the Covert Battalions
I already played Neil Young, so then I played a Neil Young cover by one of my favorite Brooklyn bands of all time, Type O Negative....
5) Type O Negative - Cinnamon Girl (Neil Young cover)
6) Black Sabbath - Paranoid
7) Wolfmother - Tales from the Forest of Gnomes
Rockin'
8) Tapes 'n Tapes - Omaha
9) Deadboy & The Elephantmen - Stop, I'm Already Dead
10) Two Gallants - Steady Rollin'
11) Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues
12) The Weakerthans - One Great City
13) Ryan Adams - Sweet Black Magic
14) Elliot Smith - Waltz #2
15) Mazzy Star - Bells Ring
Mazzy Star's So Tonight that I Might See is one of my favorite albums of all time, so I played a track off that and then played four more of my favorite artists from the same time period...
16) Portishead - Wandering Star
17) Massive Attack - Live With Me (alternate version)
18) Bjork - Venus as a Boy
19) Tricky - Pumpkin
I snuck a second track by the Ballet into the next set of songs...
20) Prince Darling Nikki
21) Stars - Sleep Tonight
22) The Ballet - In My Head
23) Voxtrot - Soft and Warm
Then played more of my 'old' favorites....
24) Digable Planets - Nickel Bag
25) De La Soul - This is a Recording
26) Tribe Called Quest - Show Business
27) The Pharcyde - Soul Flower (remix)
28) Deee-Lite - What is Love
29) Tokyo Police Club - Be Good
30) Land of Talk - Seafoam
31) Cat Power - Werewolf
I played Tokyo Police Club and Land of Talk back-to-back just like they're playing this Thursday at Syrup Room, and then Cat Power who has a similar voice to Lizzy from Land of Talk came right after Land of Talk, and then I ended with Regina Spektor...
32) Regina Spektor - Remember That Time
No new show on July 4th. They'll be a repeat.

Sunn 0))) | NY Times, Pitchfork, David Byrne, Avalon, & Carnegie Hall
"Newsworthy? Not really...but it has to be mentioned that the past year's seen metal's cache rise in the mainstream press. There're plenty of examples of the crossover (ahem), though perhaps none as startling and weirdly cool as a recent New York Times Magazine feature on Sunn 0))), Boris, and Southern Lord, the label operated by Sunn 0)))'s Greg Anderson." Last Sunday there was a huge article about them in the NY Times which I suspect might dash my hopes for them joining the lineup for one of the nights at Carnegie Hall I’m curating next Feb. But who knows? I expected a sell out last night as a result of that article, but I guess the Times demographic and the audience for extremely loud minimal metal has a small overlap. I can see the Venn diagram in my mind." [David Byrne]

Jeff Mangum posting a hoax
"Updating a story first posted here (Billboard) yesterday (June 27), Neutral Milk Hotel principal Jeff Mangum has disavowed a Web posting attributed to him, which falsely referenced the progress on the reclusive artist's first new album since 1998's iconic 'In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.'
Longtime collaborator Robert Schneider, who fronts the Apples In Stereo, reached out to Mangum in an attempt to verify the posting, which was made on a Web site devoted to the Elephant 6 musical collective. Schneider then posted Mangum's reply on the site, which reads, 'I am sorry to inform you that this is not my post. Could you please inform the good people ... that this is not my writing?'" [Billboard]
In Pitchfork's defense, they seemed to get confirmation from a reliable source before posting. Most of all this is just funny, but sad. Next probable hoaxes: Radiohead says they're breaking up (thx Phil) & Pavement says they're getting back together.

Boredoms @ 2006 Intonation Festival, Chicago | pics
"Festival rosters are always full of safe bets – so here's to the organizers for booking Boredoms, probably the most challenging act on the roster. My guess is that not many in the audience knew what to expect from the band on one of only a handful of live American dates in the last few years.
The group wasted no time, sending a six-drumstick attack from the group's drummers to produce round after round of locked groove. Occasionally, the pounding would open up to make way for one Boredom or another to chase some weird mini-rhythm down the rabbit hole, but always returning to the previous driving rhythm. After the pause that marked the end of the first half of the set, circuit guru Yamataka Eye led the group on a more eerie path.

Every off-pattern fill from the drum corps ushered in a meltdown from Eye, and usually another palpable BPM bump. Pretty fitting then how the band's sometimes krauty moments of beat driving would change so fluidly into more giddy and freewheeling abstractions. As drummer Yoshimi Yokota (she of the Flaming Lips' namesake, yes) took to the keys to close the set, the audience had witnessed Boredoms' three-drum pile up morph into something more conventionally beautiful. A criminally short set time notwithstanding, this was a real treat from a band that continues to surprise old fans while stunning new ones."

Neutral Milk Hotel played NYC 7 or 8 times
NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL PLAYING ATHENS, GA [CRED]

I was just talking to somebody about the possiblity of Jeff Mangum returning, and if he did where he would play, and for how many nights in a row, etc... That got me looking at the well-organized Neutral Milk Hotel gigography. I didn't realize NMH played so few small shows (especially considering what a large impact they had). They played their last NYC show at Bowery Ballroom in 1998 (did they headline?), and their 3rd to last NYC show was as an OPENER for Olivia Tremor Control at Brownies (what was the capacity of Brownies? 150?). The NY Times reviewed it.
1996
17 July - Knitting Factory w/ Stephin Merritt & Butterglory
01 August - Knitting Factory w/ The Supreme Dicks & the Air Traffic Controllers
06 September - Westbeth Theatre w/ Guv'ner, Spent, Portatastic, & Lambchop
20 October- Brownies w/ The Olivia Tremor Control & Clem Snide **
** the October 20th show is actually "Jeff Mangum with the Pulsars"
1997
25 April - Knitting Factory w/ The Olivia Tremor Control & Alva
28 April - Brownies w/ The Olivia Tremor Control
1998
07 March - Knitting Factory w/ Elf Power & the Music Tapes
25 July - Bowery Ballroom w/ Elf Power, Of Montreal, & Marshmallow Coast
Who was at one of these shows, or any NMH show for that matter?

Blondie & "New Cars" tour cancelled due to injury
The Blondie & "New Cars" tour that started in Robinsville, MS in May stopped abruptly after the June 10th NJ show due to an injury by one of the Cars. As you can see from Blondie's schedule, the last half of the tour is off.
The bands have postponed their summer Road Rage Tour after New Cars guitarist Elliot Easton suffered a broken left clavicle. Easton had surgery Monday after he was injured falling out of his bunk on the band's tour bus. The driver had swerved suddenly to avoid another vehicle. "It was amazing that after the accident Elliot played four more shows in a brace and in constant pain," said Blondie's Debbie Harry said in a statement. "He really tried his best to keep on playing so he should be given a great deal of credit for that. We all wish him a speedy recovery."

I really wanted to finally see The Streets at Webster Hall last night, but I didn't have a ticket and it didn't seem worth trying to get one with so many other shows going on anyway. Here's a picture from this year's Bonnaroo.

"... I cleanse my palette with some good ol' white boy rap, first from The Streets, who boast a back-up band in matching orange uniforms printed with palm trees, and the biggest bottle of brandy I've ever seen. The brandy is generously proffered by Mike Skinner, who proclaims, "I like to drink with all my friends," and then promptly launches into "Too Much Brandy." The Village Voice talks to & about Todd P
"....Late last year, Patrick tried to open a proper, permanent venue—the Llano Estacado, a loft space in Williamsburg—but the police shut it down after just a few shows. Financial difficulties and disputes with his partners have temporarily derailed his plans to try again, though he's eyeing a medium-sized space in Long Island City. In the meantime, he supports himself by renting practice spaces to bands in the Llano Estacado building while promoting his shows elsewhere. No day job. 'I probably make less money than 90 percent of the people who come to my shows,' he says.
But even if that eventually changes, Patrick's overriding philosophy won't. 'If I book a Yeah Yeah Yeahs, show, it's not going to be at Irving Plaza or wherever it is they play at,' he says. 'It's going to be at, say, one of the Hasidic rental halls on Bedford and Flushing, like the Rose Castle or something. I'd book it at a place that's off the beaten path: appropriate and big, but different, someplace that lets people realize that there's no reason that these things have to happen at these places where you think they're supposed to happen'....." [read it all @ The Village Voice]
(Silly Todd, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs totally play at Roseland ....or Bowery Ballroom (and they like it)...or Maxwell's...and McCarren Park Pool even. just not Irving Plaza, well it's been a while anyway.)
----
THIS THURSDAY, JUNE 29, 2006: Todd P & I join forces to bring you Land of Talk, Tokyo Police Club, The Ballet and more....at a very-Todd P-approved venue in East Williamsburg (good luck finding it...just kidding...you'll find it....I swear.)

Sleater-Kinney breaks up

After eleven years as a band, Sleater-Kinney have decided to go on indefinite hiatus.
The upcoming summer shows will be our last. As of now, there are no plans for future tours or recordings. We feel lucky to have had the support of many wonderful people over the years. We want to thank everyone who has worked with us, written kind words about us, performed with us, and inspired us.
But mostly we want to extend our gratitude to our amazing fans. You have been a part of our story from the beginning. We could not have made our music without your enthusiasm, passion, and loyalty. It is you who have made the entire journey worthwhile.
With love and thanks,

the Belle & Sebastian / Starbucks ticket fiasco
I'm not sure exactly what happened, but here are a few reactions...
IN MY EMAIL "River to River screwed a whole lot of Belle & Sebastian fans today. You know how they told everybody they were giving out tickets at the Starbucks starting at noon today? Well, at least at the Barclay & Broadway location, people found out at 11:50am that all the tickets had already been given away. They cited an unspecified 'safety concern' as the reason."
IN THE COMMENTS: "went to the one at woolworth bldg (b'way & barclay st) this morning... got there at 9am and was about 100 ppl back in line. no one knew how many tix they were giving out. at 10:35 or so the line started moving & they were giving out the tix bc the line was like about 500 ppl long (at least) and they had 500 pairs of tix. feel bad for the people who came at noon."
IN THE COMMENTS: "All tickets at the Woolworth Building Starbucks were given away starting a few hours before noon. Lame lame lame."

Flashy Python & the Body Snatchers (Alec Ounsworth) @ Joe's Pub, NYC | pics
And while I'm talking about Alec Ounsworth, I thought I'd post the pics from the performance he gave (with band) as Flashy Python and the Body Snatchers the other night @ Joe's Pub (June 22, 2006). I was at the late show (he played an early one too).

Alec is a great song writer and performer, and it was nice to his other side - the side that's not Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. The CYHSY side is nice too though, so I was happy to hear him play Details of the War and that Cigarettes song. Overall the show was great, mesmerizing at times, and much better than what I remember from his performance as The Pelican Picnic at Mercury Lounge (I'm sure the setting had something to do with it). Some songs really stood out this time, but I don't know what they're called. He closed with a Loudon Wainwright cover.

Others who went to one of the two shows that night: The Modern Age, hearsay, The Underrated, & The Music Slut.

Andrew Bird @ Bonnaroo 2006 | pics, news
With all this talk of Final Fantasy vs. Andrew Bird, I thought now would be a good time to post this picture of Andrew at this year's Bonnaroo festival.

"ANDREW BIRD might just have been the most talented man in Manchester. Using his violin and backed by only a drummer, Bird’s pre-recorded and on-the-spot loops, guitar, glockenspiel and masterful whistling skills made the most exquisite sound we heard all weekend." [Nashville Scene]
"The hip violinist is currently working on his next full-length album, expected sometime next year. Building upon the success of 2005's Mysterious Production Of Eggs, Bird has recruited a number of Midwest musicians, including Haley Bonar and Chris Morrissey, both veterans of the lengthy Mysterious Production Of Eggs tour." Final Fantasy @ Tonic, NYC | pics
"An interesting direction of the evolution of the tape loop is the looping pedal - a digital sampler built into an easy-to-use footswitch-operated pedal of the kind most often used by guitarists to create looping layers of melody or texture during a live performance. A noteworthy example of this melodic layering effect is Ian Williams' dense, complex layers of guitar on Don Caballero's American Don (free MP3s available here and here). Some popular digital looping pedals (which can be used on any instrument, but are primarily used by guitarists) are the Line 6 DL4 (used by, among others, Jazz guitarists Bill Frisell and John Scofield), the Boomerang Phrase Sampler (used by Phish's Trey Anastasio), and the Boss Loop Station." [Wikipedia]

Final Fantasy, and all his looping pedals, played a short, but very sweet set at Tonic in NYC Saturday night that left me (and the whole crowd) wanting more, more, more. (Did he play for just 45 minutes?). Gentleman Reg opening was a bonus. Alex Luchevosky played between them - he's got that M.Ward-Nina Simone thing going on, which sounded good at times, but mostly I just couldn't wait for Final Fantasy to come on.

"Much as I like Final Fantasy, I must confess that I never actually suspected that a lone Canadian on the stage with a violin could be one of the best shows I've seen all year. But my god, man. Owen Pallett is just simply enthralling, from the moment one, to moment one-hundred. He had me so transfixed that, for the duration of his set, I momentarily forgot that I was standing in the wet, subtropical ground-floor basement known as Tonic." [Catbirdseat]

"Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy) does everything live on stage. He records each layer of song right there, loops it, plays over it, and everything on the violin, he beats on it, slaps the strings with the back of the bow, plucks it, screams bits into the distortion mike attached to it, etc, etc." [That's Plenty]

"Last night at the Final Fantasy show at Tonic, Dylan and I were attacked by a chubby frizzy-haired drama major and her boyfriend as they blatently ignored the unspoken but obvious set of rules that exist at small New York shows." [That's Plenty]

"good stuff at tonic last night. His show is just like Gryff from SFA with the loops and stuff. Gentlemen Reg was nice and twee-like. Only complains are the sets were short and he didn't play "he poo clouds" or "the artic circle." oh well." [cheeri-o]

Part of the reason Final Fantasy had to get off the stage so quickly was the Other Passengers show coming up next.

An interview with Mark E. Smith of The Fall
DOWNLOAD: Reformation
(a new MP3 - a bootleg recording from the Fall's recent Brooklyn show)
Help me welcome interviewer Patrick Southern to BrooklynVegan. Patrick, a musician himself, responded when I put out a call for music interviewers two weeks ago. He mentioned in his email that his dream interview would probably be with Mark E. Smith from the Fall, so I helped arrange it. Mark and Patrick had a long distance chat on the phone this past Friday (June 23, 2006). They discussed the banana peel incident, his band leaving the States as he slept, Franz Ferdinand, the new record, and more...
MARK E SMITH - THEN & NOW

PATRICK: Do you think the American audiences that The Fall draws are any different, fundamentally, than the British audiences?
MARK: Well it depends where you go, really. In Britain, in the north, it’s very fanatical. There isn’t that great difference though, no. Not a great deal of people leave. (Laughter)
PATRICK: I actually saw you at the last stop of your most recent American tour.
MARK: In Brooklyn, you mean?
PATRICK: Yes, and it was my first time seeing The Fall.
MARK: Yeah, well it was a good show actually. It was really coming together. It’s like a lot of tours, you’re just getting it together and then it’s over. But the group came over and we played Manchester about a week later and it was great. That was good for me because I was a bit worried about the new group getting it right in Britain.
PATRICK: Do you plan on keeping the new group around for subsequent tours?
MARK: Yeah, well, strangely enough, after they joined, we only did two gigs and then we were in the studio for ten days. So we’ve got quite a lot of stuff done actually. We’re about half way there with the next record.
PATRICK: That’s great to hear.
MARK: It is, I’m amazed really.
PATRICK: So, what happened with the singer from The Talk? Reports seem to vary.
MARK: Right! Ha-ha! Well is on the ‘Net over there or something isn’t it? I don’t know. Well all I know is, I was in the middle of – I was just singing you know? And this guy… he didn’t throw a Banana at me, he came on my left side and hit me very hard with Banana. I was really mad actually, because I didn’t know what the fuck was going on. Especially, you know, when you get hit on the side when you’re not ready for it… I was in middle of singing, you know what I mean?
PATRICK: So this was a full banana, and not a banana-peel or something like that?
MARK: (Laughter) Well that’s the funny bit about it. [Mumbles something about a Banana] All I’ll say is this: if it has been a half and inch lower, I could have been dead. I know that. You don’t… erm… Oh, you know, he must have been upset. You see, I only knew the next day why he was upset. [The rest of The Fall] sort of left that night, you see. In the night, not telling me. That’s why he did it, obviously, because he was upset because he thought the tour was over. I was the last one to know, as fucking usual. I just thought he flipped his lid.
PATRICK: Do you typically choose your opening acts?
MARK: Usually, I do, yeah. It’s funny, because with this one, they sort of wanted to come on the tour. So we made a deal. They didn’t pay us anything, but the deal was that they keep to themselves. The thing I’m annoyed about is that the British musicians [again, the rest of The Fall] obviously told him before they told me. That’s the only thing I’m mad about really.
PATRICK: That sucks.
MARK: Yeah, it does, but it’s all for the best.
PATRICK: Well, the openers you had in Brooklyn were great. I especially enjoyed Safi Sniper.
MARK: Yeah, he lives in Berlin. He’s Israeli and he lives in Berlin. Ha! He’s actually a vegan. A fanatical one, as only Germans can be.
PATRICK: Now, about the new Fall band. Did you personally choose them yourself?
MARK: They haven’t really played together. Two of them have a group called Darkness My Love, the bass player and the guitarist. But the drummer just knows them. He’s never played with them, never mind me. But it just fell together very well.
PATRICK: What do you think of some of these bands that are around now, such as Franz Ferdinand, who are citing The Fall as an influence? It seems to me like a weird thing for a band like that to say.
MARK: Well it does to me too, to be quite honest. If I could afford a lawyer, I just might pull an injunction on them mentioning our name. Haha! I mean, if you’re new to The Fall… a lot of these groups… I don’t know what it is. I think a lot of these group use it to sound a bit hip. When I was a teenager, people used to say “oh well this group sounds a lot like this group”, and then when you go and see them they sound like a pack of shit. They sound like the Talking Heads to me, and I’m not knocking them, it’s just misleading.
PATRICK: Are there any bands out now that you think are particularly interesting?
MARK: Well, there’s a couple of good groups in Liverpool. They’ve got a bit of an edge to them. They don’t sort of walk the line like a lot of British group tend to do nowadays. It’s a bit like The Talk, really. They sound like it’s a business, in a strange way. I don’t relate to that a lot. It’s always, “thank you to my manager” and “thank you this,”
and it’s not really the way I started the group. I’ve got some builders in my building, these guys who work in construction companies, and they’re much more interesting than these people. There much more fun. That’s why The Fall keep going, in a strange way. A lot of people see that.
PATRICK: You’ve been doing this for almost 30 years. Do you have any plans of stopping, or are you just going keep going indefinitely with The Fall?
MARK: Well, for now I am. I mean, the main thing was to get America done and to get started on the next LP, and I’m pretty much there. So, with this new group, they’ve got their projects, but I think I can work with them for a good bit. What’s good about them is, you can say to these L.A. guys, “Can”, you know the old German group, and they say “Yeah, we like that.” They’ve got a very open mind about things. Like a lot of British groups, they want to be a certain thing. Some of them want to be U2, some of them want to be the fucking Smiths. But these ones seem to be quite open. You can put ideas to them and they’ll say, “well, we’ve never thought of that but we’ll try it.”
PATRICK: You were in 24-Hour Party People, is that correct?
MARK: That’s right.
PATRICK: Are you going to see you on the screen in the future?
MARK: I don’t know. I’m not a big fan of it. I watch TV and films, but it’s not for me, really. I’d like to make a film, but doesn’t everybody? I think it’s more important to keep Hollywood actors out of music groups. (Laughter)
PATRICK: Well, those are all of my questions, Mark. Thanks for taking the time to answer them for me.
MARK: Good man! Take care.

Broken Mascis Scene played Toronto
BROKEN MASCIS SCENE @ THE MOD CLUB, TORONTO

"...While there were surely some in attendance strictly on the basis of the BSS component of the lineup, the night was unmistakably J's. Call them whatever you want - as far as I'm concerned, that was Dinosaur Jr up there. Kevin Drew often doubled J's vocals but only occasionally took lead and if he never strapped the guitar on at all, you wouldn't have noticed. Also onstage were Brendan Canning on bass and Bill Priddle on guitar and two drummers - BSS's Justin Peroff and Mascis' Fog bandmate George Berz. Rather than take the dueling percussionist route, Peroff and Berz played pretty much the same thing beat for beat - probably unnecessary but they were so tight that it became that much more impactful. And in very un-Broken Social fasion, guests were kept to a minimum. Charles Spearin and Ohad Benchetrit added trumpet and flute to 'Thumb' (probably added to the set just to get trumpet and flute in there) and Feist came out for chorus vocals on set-closer 'Get Me'...." [that & more @ Chromewaves]
All photos in this post by Ronni P, who said, "Such a good show, the crowd was super cool, also very spiritual as many in attendance were from Amma, promoting the July 23rd Toronto appearance of Meta Amritanandamayi. Tokyo Police club apparently opened, but I was next door at friends house drinking."

Figurines @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC | pics
DOWNLOAD: Bright (MP3)
Pitchfork: You did a tour of North America this past spring-- how did your experience in America measure against your expectations?
Figurines: I was really surprised in a good way about the people. You hear stories about how dangerous it is to walk along the streets, and then one night we were walking around and couldn't find our hotel, and this lady stops-- she could tell that what we were totally lost-- and she asked us what we were looking for. That would never happen in Denmark! And also, we heard all these horror stories from Danish bands touring in the U.S. that they had to play pizza joints and no sound engineer showed up and everything was fucked...but it wasn't like that for us. But there were a lot of burgers! A lot of good burgers. A lot of different burgers. I think we're very spoiled up here in Denmark when it comes to venues, and the treatment and the catering. But we felt good eating those burgers.

I was psyched to check out Figurines between Cold War Kids and Tapes 'n Tapes @ Bowery Ballroom - partly because I had just started digging their music, and partly becaues they were the only band on the bill who I hadn't seen before. Unfortunately I didn't find their live show as dynamic as the recorded music.

I'll probably give Figurines another chance when they play Mercury Lounge with Land of Talk this week (which may mean I'll see Land of Talk twice this week)

Scalpers selling fake Bowery Ballroom (Ticketweb) tickets?
Josh wrote in with this story from the Ryan Adams show @ Bowery Ballroom Friday night:
I got them from a scalper outside around midnight. The random guy (who looked oddly like Sammy L. Jackson) and I walked around the corner on to bowery where he sold me a pair of tix. Normally, at smaller venues, i'd ask the guys at the door if they were real or not, but i figured the bowery wouldn't really be in to that, so stupidly i bought them. the tix looked great, had the hologram and everything.
the guy probably could've bought a pair of tix for the price it took him to make the forgery... anyways, after waiting in the rain we get inside, the woman downstairs rips the tix in half and tells me they're fake. apparently they have some kind of image or color inside the paper, and when you rip it in half you can see some kind of identifier.
well mine didn't have that. so cheers to the guy for making a pretty awesome forgery.
the bowery folks agreed to let me pay face value. which was pretty nice.
Has this ever happened to anyone else at Bowery Ballroom, or at another venue serviced by Ticketweb?

JAY-Z @ NOKIA THEATRE, NYC | JUNE 24, 2006 [CRED]

"I had the chance to see the 10th anniversary of Jay Z's debut album, Reasonable Doubt, in its entirety at the Nokia last night, June 24th. Although I do not have a picture (due to a bad zoom on the cell phone) I can assure you all Jay Z looked super toted def. He came on stage with a white jacket and just after two songs he took off his jacket for us all to see his wicked black t shirt with diamonds in the shape of wings on both the front and back of the shirt. WOW...my eyes! Talk about ]blinging.'" [Totes Def]
"Jay started out in a white blazer but soon removed it to show off he sequenced t-shirt. I'm thinking Beyonce wasn't in town for surely she would've vetoed that wardrobe choice. You can't quite see the level of gaudiness in these pictures but trust me...." [Sit Down Stand Up]

The Ballet | A NYC "sissy pop band" | MP3s & show
THE BALLET

After confirming that Voxtrot's singer Ramesh would DJ the show at Syrup Room on June 29th with Land of Talk and Tokyo Police Club, I asked their manager James if he had any suggestions for a third band. He asked if I'd heard of a NYC band called The Ballet. I hadn't. He said their live show is good and Ramesh himself is actually a big fan. So then I checked out their MP3s, and MySpace, and immediately decided to ask them. For fans of Voxtrot, The Smiths, Belle & Sebastian, The Magnetic Fields and other "sissy pop"....

DOWNLOAD: Stop, I'm Already Dead (MP3)

Siren Festival 'main stage' openers Deadboy & The Elephantmen played Mercury Lounge in NYC on June 5, 2006. It was a last-minute early show added not long after they played Webster Hall with Wolfmother. Definitely check them out at Siren if you can wake up early enough.

Is Riggs a haunted soul? Or just some bored misfit who drew pentagrams on his Trapper Keeper in Jr. High? Don’t know. But he has a great voice, and a genuine, troubled intensity. Brunet pounds those drums so hard you think she’s fistfucking your eyesocket. [Heartonastick]

Midlake played Mercury Lounge
"...Last night, James came over to cheer me up and we went to go see Midlake play at the Mercury Lounge--it was a really good show, really tight, and there was a projector! I love looking at crazy things when I'm not looking at the crazy singer, who was not at all cute until he started singing all those things about being named 'Roscoe.' Then he was cute. And it was crazy packed, despite the Beirut show happening across town at Northsix...." [sweatermusic]

MATISYAHU MAFIA | BONNAROO 2006

FRIDAY 4PM
"Nobody looks less hippie that Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst. The emo wunderkind's embrace of the proceedings seemed to set the stage for a string of incredible indie-rock performances over the festival. 'I get the impression a lot of you come out every year to check out new music,' he says from the stage. 'I think that's very cool.' And with that, the hipsters and the hippies entered a Yalta-like pact.
Over the course of the set, he brought in a string of guests, including Gillian Welch, Steven Rawlings, My Morning Jacket's Jim James and the Super Furry Animals' Gruff Rhys, to form an indie-rock supergroup for 'Singing a Song in the Morning,' by the Soft Machine's Kevin Ayers. 'They just showed me the song five minutes before and I was like 'OK,' ' Jones told us backstage after the show. You know who else was grooving backstage to the show? You got it: Matisyahu." DR. JOHN @ BONNAROO 2006

"...They played on a stage decorated with a totem: an abstract cross that looked like it was made from driftwood and skeletons. Dr. John was dressed as the Night Tripper in a feathered headdress and a fur-trimmed cape with mysterious markings. The band played 'I Walk on Gilded Splinters' as rolling, slow-gathering funk, with a keening slide guitar. A woman dressed in white, like a voodoo celebrant, danced onstage; Dr. John left his keyboards and approached her, tapping on an African-style bell as she shimmied next to him. It was a New Orleans ritual: part tradition, part theater, and geared for a good time....." [NY TIMES]

Beirut @ Sound Fix Records, Brooklyn, NYC | pics by Kelly
Ryspace taped the show and posted the MP3s.

Kelly Bruce reports, "On Saturday (June 17, 2006) Beirut played a free show at Soundfix Records in Brooklyn. It was super sweaty and packed, no A/C and full of people. They had to keep passing cups and bottle of water up from the bar between every song to keep everyone from passing out. Just a couple songs in the PA went out and they played a song without it before they got everything back up and running. The show was pretty much half new stuff (opened with a song called Zebra Safari and then Monster Island for example) and the other half from Gulag. Towards the end they turned off the house lights for a song just because it was so unbearably hot up front. I had wanted to make the show at Northsix on Tuesday but can't because of work. As hot as it was, everyone playing was super energetic and just made the show so much fun. They sounded great!"

Petra Haden not in Decemberists anymore | playing shows

Chromewaves found this post by Colin Meloy on the Decemberists message board:
"it's an amicable thing; we still are friends. For one thing, we initially had asked her to come aboard as a touring musician for just the Picaresque tours. We hadn't really expected to take her on as a full-time part of the band. There was some talk about that happening, but in the end, after the tours were over and we were back in the comforts of our homes it didn't necessarily still make sense".
So maybe my Foo Fighters 'tour date' post really should have read "The EX-Decemberist Petra Haden is playing violin for Foo Fighters this summer".

Asthmatic Kitty also tells us that "My Brightest Diamond is Shara Worden, who possesses a voice so rich and visceral, you almost feel as if she is singing the secrets of your heart." AND THAT THEY "are pleased to welcome her to our family. Her debut release, [Bring Me The Workhorse] will be released on August 22nd."

NY Times does "Freak Folk" part II | Juana Molina to record with Devendra Banhart
"Mr. Banhart, who got so much attention in 2004, remains the king of the scene and has extended his reach beyond it. He was recently invited to perform at a Chanel fashion show, to help organize the British alternative-pop festival All Tomorrow's Parties and to perform at this weekend's Bonnaroo Festival in Tennessee. He was even romantically linked, for a moment, to the starlet Lindsay Lohan. Along the way the neo-hippie revival he represents is gaining cultural traction. Vice, the magazine, clothing line, record label and all-around hipster franchise, has scheduled psychedelic-rock acts (the veterans Blue Cheer and Roky Erikson, and Boredoms, a Japanese band) among the top acts at the Intonation Festival it sponsors next weekend in Chicago. And "Just Another Diamond Day," a 1969 song by Vashti Bunyan — an eccentric British singer who's a folksy patron saint of the new scene — is now playing in a T-Mobile ad." [NY TIMES]

NY Mag: Secrets of the Radiohead Set List
"'Radiohead, currently on a nineteen-date tour of the U.S. and Canada, has played over 800 shows without repeating a set. 'One of the worst things in music is when bands play the same set every night,' says Ed O’Brien, who plays guitar and sings backup vocals for the group. 'We did about three and a half weeks on the road with Alanis Morissette just before we went to the studio for OK Computer—she played the same set every single night, and they’d been touring for like fifteen months. Her musicians literally went mad.'" [New York Magazine]

"For those who complain about the lame state of New York nightlife, I have a solution: Eugene Hütz. For those who bemoan boring bands with no charisma or energy, Eugene Hütz—and his hardworking group Gogol Bordello—can help. Prince played Bryant Park, PLAYING BUTTER TONIGHT
The excitement and energy was evident as fans danced, sang and enjoyed themselves for Prince's free concert in Bryant Park on "Good Morning America". Prince's guitar rang through the crowd as he performed a song from his new album "3121" and an old favorite "Let's Go Crazy". The usually reclusive musician who is known for shunning the media and staying away from mainstream events has been making lots of public appearances lately. He was joined on the stage by prominent drummer Sheila E. and singer Tamar who performed one of her songs from her new album "Milk and Honey". [ABC NEWS]

Maceo Parker & Prince & Tamar @ Prospect Park Bandshell (Celebrate Brooklyn), NYC | pics

I really was going to stay in Thursday night (June 15, 2006) - it was a long week already. But the prospect of laying out on a blanket under the stars (well you can't see them, but I know they're there) while listening to Maceo Parker and band was too irresistable, so I headed to Prospect Park for the opening night of the Celebrate Brooklyn! free concert series, and set up back behind the gate where there was plenty of room. I couldn't see the show, but it sounded just fine. Of course I couldn't resist getting some photos, so a few songs before the end I worked my way in the gate and through the huge crowd.

It was hard - the place was packed. When the show ended I worked my way back out. Then the encore started right about the time I got back to my blanket, and suddenly there was A LOUD ROAR. Everyone was going nuts. Somebody special was obviously on stage. I ran back to the fence and saw a lady in orange.

I wasn't sure who it was until I finally figured out there was a man in white to her left. Even from however-many-feet back I was, I knew immediately it was none other than Prince. That's when I realized the lady was Tamar - the singer he's been pimpin' for the past year (remember the Nokia Theatre show?). My pics of Prince are so-so, so thanks Noel Mendez for sending me this much clearer one....

The encore was just one song - not really that exciting, except well, IT WAS PRINCE....

If anyone really thought about, they probably figured out Prince would be there. Prince and Maceo play together all the time. Three days before this show Prince was in Manhattan to play the Webbys, and Prince is/was scheduled to play in Bryant Park for Good Morning America on Friday Morning.

Ryan Adams played Rockwood Music Hall & BB Kings w/ America, James Iha & Adam Schlesinger
AMERICA & FRIENDS RYAN ADAMS & JAMES IHA (cred)

America took time away from recording their next album (a double album due out October 17th on Sony's Burgandy Records) to play BB King's to a lively, attentive audience. Helping them produce the album are James Iha and Adam Schlesinger. Both joined the band (along with Ryan Adams) on the well-received encore of "Horse With No Name". [Fresh Bread]
That show took place June 1st. On June 12th Ryan supposedly played a surprise midnight set at Rockwood Music Hall after watching Tom Ceraulo who played at 11:00. Rockwood Music Hall is the same place I saw Norah Jones play on May 24th which was the same night Ryan Adams made a surprise appearance at Mercury Lounge.

Howlin' Rain & Comets on Fire | MP3, Tour Dates, etc.
DOWNLOAD: Roll on the Rusted Days (Howlin' Rain MP3)

London, London is Cibelle and Devendra's playful rendition of a song written by major Brazilian artist (and co-founder of the Tropicalia movement) Caetano Veloso while he was living in forced exile in London during the early '70s.

CELLULOID VAUDEVILLE
"A program consisting of short films selected from submissions by the Dolls feverishly creative fan base will be peppered with thought provoking vaudeville antics in cities across America. Amanda Palmer herself will cap off the night in typical piano-destroying fashion, singing songs culled from popular and not-so-popular film soundtracks (expect John Hughes, Pink Floyd AND Disney Classics. Deep Throat? Oklahoma? She’s still working on it).
Curated by long-time collaborator and indie film-iconoclast Michael Pope (director of the band’s award-winning videos and live DVD), and BriAnna Olson (producer of the band’s music video ‘Sing’) these film shorts are a mixture of high art, humor, sexiness and downright weirdness. Including never-before-seen band documentary footage and amazing fan-made music videos inspired by and set to the music of The Dresden Dolls, this program is a celebration of true underground filmmaking."

RIP BEN CHAPPEL
I just thought I'd take this opportunity to throw this small memorial to Ben in here. I didn't really know him - I met him once briefly. He was a blogger friend of blogger friends. He wrote the "Music Picks" column at Gothamist after Coolfer and before me. He was very close with Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls. She memorialized him in her journal.

!Forward, Russia! played their first NYC show at Mercury Lounge last night, June 14, 2006. Great show. Enthusiastic Crowd. Afterwards the whole band went and hung out at Fat Baby even though they had a plane to catch at 9 am Thursday morning - to San Francisco. Expect them back in September - around the time their album is released here on Mute Records.

I didn't see Sonic Youth @ CBGB | NPR will stream DC
SONIC YOUTH @ CBGB | JUNE 13, 2006 (CRED)

I was at Radiohead. Robert Christgau was probably at Sonic Youth. 'Modest micah' definitely was....
I stood at the stage next to nick zinner, his girlfriend and thurston moore's mother. the band was in a fantastic mood and played their entire new LP, "Rather Ripped" perfectly from start to finish. this show really enforced how strong the new record is.
jem cohen was there filming a documentary and he asked me if he could film me for it. i said sure, so he sat me down in one of the backrooms and had an assistant shine a sungun at me while i looked into the lens of his super 8mm camera.
this was the first time sonic youth had played CB's since 1992. i had a good night.
ps - mark ibold from pavement is the new bassist/guitarist.

The June 15th Washington DC show will be streamed live on NPR (and then archived and available forever)
