Sound Team + Midlake + Cold War Kids | Tour dates + MP3s

MIDLAKE
Midlake

I'm not totally sold on Midlake's new album (The Trials Of Van Occupanther), but I do love Roscoe, the Fleetwood-Mac-MASH-theme-song-sounding ditty everyone's raving about. As a blogger, this puts me in the minority.

Arts & Crafts releasing Phoenix in Canada

"Believe me, it's happening. Majors want to get Arts & Crafts to run the release of the first few hundred albums, so it looks like [the artists are] on Arts & Crafts. They can get press interest now in a way that the majors just can't." [Jason Collett]

Phoenix's It's Never Been Like That comes out June 13th in Canada - on Arts & Crafts. It came out May 23rd in the U.S. on Astralwerks. Astralwerks is owned by Virgin/EMI.

Teddy Thompson playing Living Room, Summerstage

Teddy Thompson's recent headlining show at Avalon in NYC was raided by police. The other day he opened for Mason Jennings at Webster Hall. On June 17th he's playing with Rhett Miller and Ollabelle at Central Park Summerstage. On June 13th he's playing a small and hardly-announced show at The Living Room. He's scheduled to go on at 11:00, after Kinnie Star.

Mr Brownstone likes Barbes, didn't love GNR @ Hammerstein

What is your favorite place to drink in NYC, and what's the best night to go out?
There is no question about it: the best place for drinks, live music, etc. is Barbes in Brooklyn. Unless the date is June 10, 2006, in which case it's clearly the Bowery Ballroom. [Gothamist]

----

So what's Greenhalgh's take on the recent resurrection of Guns n' Roses? "I heard a bunch of leaked demos while we were in Europe this winter. As someone who can say they love Use Your Illusion II with a straight face, it was shocking to hear how bad the new demos were. Shocking. I actually did get to see the new GN'R at Hammerstein Ballroom when they were in NYC a couple of weeks ago. Axl actually sounded pretty good, but the new band lacks the bluesy looseness and sense of danger of the old one. You get the sense that these guys get fined if they fuck up. I'll take a coked-up, drunk out of his mind Slash any day over these guys. Either that, or I'm just not 12 years old anymore. Not sure." [Pitchfork]

Metallic Falcons (CocoRosie, Antony, Tarantula) @ Tonic (Record Release show), NYC | pics

SIERRA CASSIDY
Metallic Falcons @ Tonic

File under psychedelic-ambient-shoegaze: Metallic Falcons put on an impressive close-to-first show at Tonic Wednesday night (June 7, 2006). Seats and/or beanbags would have made the atmospheric-artsy performance more comfortable, and it was hard for the crowd not to start talking over the super-quiet often-electronic song intros, but when the music was loud enough, it was strong enough to suck me in. The style itself isn't anything new, but hearing that kind of music with the voices of Matteah Baim, Sierra Cassidy (opera-trained member of CocoRosie), and (for one song) Antony Hagerty (Antony & The Johnson) made the record-release show more than worth the $3.00 price of admission.

ANTONY
Metallic Falcons @ Tonic

The first song started with Spleen and his bandmate Tez doing voice-beatbox-throat-stuff. They've been on tour with CocoRosie and they're playing their own show at Joe's Pub on June 13th. Sierra's sister Bianca (also in CocoRosie) isn't technically in the band, but she was on stage the whole time manning the electronics. Greg Rogrove (Tarantula) played drums. Antony only sang the one song (the one he sings on the album I think), but he stayed on stage the whole time anyway. They, and their friends in the front row, were all wearing fake white beards for most of the show. Some of those friends joined them on stage for the last song. One audience member was wearing a scary perpetually-smiling full-head mask for the whole show. I thought for sure she would be on stage at some point, but nope - she just stayed right there in the front enjoying the show - smiling, smiling, smiling...

The Bouncing Souls @ Knitting Factory, NYC (5th of 6) | pics

DOWNLOAD: Joe Lies (MP3)

The Bouncing Souls @ Knitting Factory

The Bouncing Souls haven't aged a bit and they still have the ability to put on one of the best live shows around. No stage antics - just good music that fans love, love enough to go completely nuts while its being performed. In fact, vocalist Greg Attonito barely needs to move at all. He's like the Frank Sinatra of the punk scene, calmly, and effortlessly, belting out songs that have the crowd thrashing around at the speed of light. This was especially evident when they played a cover of the Misfit's "Mommy can I go out and kill tonight". "We never played this before", he said, "and I don't know why - it's so easy". Chaos ensued.

The Bouncing Souls @ Knitting Factory

This was the fifth (6/5/6) of six special sold-out shows at Knitting Factory in NYC leading up to 6/6/6, the release date of their new album.

Tapes 'n Tapes @ Bowery Ballroom

Of the five times I've seen Tapes 'n Tapes, last night's headlining show at NYC's Bowery Ballroom was the strongest one yet (June 6, 2006). I have more to say (like about this nonsense), but not until I fully wake up, so for now here's the pics.....

Antony says see 'An Inconvenient Truth'

A MESSAGE FROM ANTONY: "It's been a long while since there has been a heroic gesture made in the American political landscape, and Al Gore has made one with his new film "An Incovenient Truth." The content is simple, and familiar to many of us, but the call to arms, especially for people in the United States, is unprecedented. Please see this film and encourage your friends and family to do the same."

Clear Channel sued over concert competition

"Clear Channel Communications Inc.....was accused in a lawsuit on Friday (June 2) of violating federal anti-trust laws by curtailing concert competition and jacking up ticket prices.

The proposed class-action, filed in Denver federal court, names Clear Channel's broadcasting unit and former concert promotion arm Live Nation Inc. as defendants.....

....According to court papers, the suit accuses the defendants of breaking the law by limiting radio airtime for musicians who used competing concert promoters and inflating musicians' fees, 'in some cases more than 100 percent of gross sales, in order to exclude competitors from the market.'..." Jens Lekman adds 2nd (smaller solo) NYC show | Telepopmusik & Angela McCluskey playing Don Hill's

Angela McCluskeyJens Lekman

Last night...

I SIMULTANEOUSLY:
1) Proved that man needs no sleep
2) Picked 32 songs for this week's radio show (airs Tuesday night @ 10 pm on Sirius, Left of Center)

I WONDERED:
1) Where Angela McCluskey has been
2) Whatever happened to Telepopmusik's 2005 summer tour
3) Which Telepopmusik and/or Angela McCluskey song I should play on this week's show
4) If there was room in Jens Lekman's schedule for a second NYC show
5) Which Jens Lekman song I should include in this week's show

I DECIDED
1) That Angela & Telepopmusik are HORRIBLE at updating their websites
2) On which Telepopmusik song to play
3) On which Jens song to play (tune in or see the playlist tomorrow night)
4) That Jens didn't really have time for a 2nd show

today....

ALL OF A SUDDEN
1) My inbox starts filling with notices that "Jens Lekman is playing a solo show at Mercury Lounge on July 19th" - one day before his tour starts in Philly, two days before Bowery Ballroom. Jens had time afterall
2) I noticed that Angela McCluskey and Telepopmusik are playing a show at Don Hill's in NYC....THIS MONDAY (June 12, 2006). huh?

Glenn Kotche & David Cossin @ World Financial Center

The free Bang on a Can Marathon at the World Financial Center yesterday (June 4, 2006) was a LONG event. It went from like noon to 10:30 pm. I unfortunately got there too late to see Matmos (review up on the Music Slut), but not too late to catch a two-song double-drumming set by Wilco's Glenn Kotche and Bang on a Can's David Cossin. The host introduced them as his dream-combination, and it was definitely a pretty impressive all-percussion performance.

Suzanne Vega @ Ground Zero, 7 WTC, NYC | pics

Suzanne Vega @ Ground Zero

Suzanne Vega stands out as the most memorable of the seven or so performers I saw at the morbid daytime concert held at Ground Zero in May. I figured she might not play My Nake is Luca or Tom's Diner, but in fact they comprised 2/3 of her short set list - it was awesome. To balance it out she played a third song that was written only one day earlier (about NYC being a woman or something like that). She didn't even know the words yet - note the dude holding up the lyrics. Also note the Steven Van Zandt-lookin mo-fo helping her out on bass guitar.

Metallica playing 'Master of Puppets' in its entirety

METALLICA IN GERMANY | JUNE 4, 2006
Metallica

I'm not sure which I want to see more: Roger Waters performing 'Dark Side of the Moon' or Metallica performing 'Master of Puppets'. .I think I want them equally bad desptire Metallica sucking now and Roger Waters missing 3/4 of Pink Floyd. So anyway, here's hoping Metallica take Waters' lead and bring this set list to America....

METALLICA performed their classic 1986 album, "Master of Puppets", in its entirety again Sunday night (June 4) at the Rock im Park festival in Nürnberg, Germany. The band played all eight songs in their proper sequence for the first time ever at yesterday's (June 3) headlining appearance at the Rock am Ring festival in Nürburgring, Germany

Young Architects Program
2006 marks the seventh annual MoMA/P.S.1 Young Architects Program, a competition that gives emerging architects the opportunity to realize an outdoor environment designed to host the Warm Up series. This year’s project, BEATFUSE!, by the New York-based firm OBRA, features an installation that evokes a sense of interior space via curved, interconnected shells made of plywood and polypropylene mesh that ripple throughout the courtyard. Since 1998, artists and architects including Gelatin, Philip Johnson, SHoP, ROY, William Massie, EMERGENT/Tom Wiscombe, and Xefirotarch have transformed P.S.1’s courtyard into an urban beach with works of interactive architecture and sculpture that have inspired both critics and audiences alike. BEATFUSE! opens June 22.

Generous funding for Warm Up 2006 is provided by agnès b. and Union Beer, with additional support by Glacéau.
