Prince played Bryant Park, PLAYING BUTTER TONIGHT

Prince @ Bryant Park The excitement and energy was evident as fans danced, sang and enjoyed themselves for Prince's free concert in Bryant Park on "Good Morning America". Maceo Parker & Prince & Tamar @ Prospect Park Bandshell (Celebrate Brooklyn), NYC | pics

Maceo Parker & PRince @ Prospect Park

I really was going to stay in Thursday night (June 15, 2006) - it was a long week already. But the prospect of laying out on a blanket under the stars (well you can't see them, but I know they're there) while listening to Maceo Parker and band was too irresistable, so I headed to Prospect Park for the opening night of the Celebrate Brooklyn! free concert series, and set up back behind the gate where there was plenty of room. I couldn't see the show, but it sounded just fine. Of course I couldn't resist getting some photos, so a few songs before the end I worked my way in the gate and through the huge crowd.

Maceo Parker & PRince @ Prospect Park

It was hard - the place was packed. When the show ended I worked my way back out. Then the encore started right about the time I got back to my blanket, and suddenly there was A LOUD ROAR. Everyone was going nuts. Somebody special was obviously on stage. I ran back to the fence and saw a lady in orange.

Maceo Parker & PRince @ Prospect Park

I wasn't sure who it was until I finally figured out there was a man in white to her left. Even from however-many-feet back I was, I knew immediately it was none other than Prince. That's when I realized the lady was Tamar - the singer he's been pimpin' for the past year (remember the Nokia Theatre show?). My pics of Prince are so-so, so thanks Noel Mendez for sending me this much clearer one....

Maceo Parker & PRince @ Prospect Park

The encore was just one song - not really that exciting, except well, IT WAS PRINCE....

Ryan Adams played Rockwood Music Hall & BB Kings w/ America, James Iha & Adam Schlesinger

AMERICA & FRIENDS RYAN ADAMS & JAMES IHA (cred)
Ryan Adams & James Iha and America

America took time away from recording their next album (a double album due out October 17th on Sony's Burgandy Records) to play BB King's to a lively, attentive audience. Helping them produce the album are James Iha and Adam Schlesinger. Both joined the band (along with Ryan Adams) on the well-received encore of "Horse With No Name". [Fresh Bread]

That show took place June 1st. On June 12th Ryan supposedly played a surprise midnight set at Rockwood Music Hall after watching Tom Ceraulo who played at 11:00. Rockwood Music Hall is the same place I saw Norah Jones play on May 24th which was the same night Ryan Adams made a surprise appearance at Mercury Lounge.

CELLULOID VAUDEVILLE
"A program consisting of short films selected from submissions by the Dolls feverishly creative fan base will be peppered with thought provoking vaudeville antics in cities across America. Amanda Palmer herself will cap off the night in typical piano-destroying fashion, singing songs culled from popular and not-so-popular film soundtracks (expect John Hughes, Pink Floyd AND Disney Classics. Deep Throat? Oklahoma? She’s still working on it).

Curated by long-time collaborator and indie film-iconoclast Michael Pope (director of the band’s award-winning videos and live DVD), and BriAnna Olson (producer of the band’s music video ‘Sing’) these film shorts are a mixture of high art, humor, sexiness and downright weirdness. Including never-before-seen band documentary footage and amazing fan-made music videos inspired by and set to the music of The Dresden Dolls, this program is a celebration of true underground filmmaking."

RIP BEN CHAPPEL
I just thought I'd take this opportunity to throw this small memorial to Ben in here. I didn't really know him - I met him once briefly. He was a blogger friend of blogger friends. He wrote the "Music Picks" column at Gothamist after Coolfer and before me. He was very close with Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls. She memorialized him in her journal.

I didn't see Sonic Youth @ CBGB | NPR will stream DC

SONIC YOUTH @ CBGB | JUNE 13, 2006 (CRED)
Sonic Youth @ CBGB

I was at Radiohead. Robert Christgau was probably at Sonic Youth. 'Modest micah' definitely was....

I stood at the stage next to nick zinner, his girlfriend and thurston moore's mother. the band was in a fantastic mood and played their entire new LP, "Rather Ripped" perfectly from start to finish. this show really enforced how strong the new record is.

jem cohen was there filming a documentary and he asked me if he could film me for it. i said sure, so he sat me down in one of the backrooms and had an assistant shine a sungun at me while i looked into the lens of his super 8mm camera.

this was the first time sonic youth had played CB's since 1992. i had a good night.

ps - mark ibold from pavement is the new bassist/guitarist.

The June 15th Washington DC show will be streamed live on NPR (and then archived and available forever)

in other news, and as some of you might have heard, our venue, Rothko, is now closed for good. we were very sad to hear this, but remain very greatful to the venue, it's staff, and it's owner, Rory Maher, for the time they allowed us to host HHK there. we loved it.

Pitchfork Interviewed Destroyer (Dan Bejar) | Thunder Cloud

Swan Lake is the new project of Dan Bejar (Destroyer), Carey Mercer (Frog Eyes), and Spencer Krug (Wolf Parade, Sunset Rubdown).

-----

Dan Bejar (Destroyer): Well, Spencer and Carey have a long history of working together-- they also both played in Destroyer when we toured Europe last year. Musically, they're pretty in tune with each other, and I think go for a lot of the same kind of sounds and arrangements. I just brought some songs to the table, played a little bit of functional guitar on them, and [did] a bit of singing on their songs in spots they guided me to. I totally trust and am a fan of their instincts, and they both have way more experience with recording than I do, so to relinquish "control" over my songs was an easy and enjoyable and necessary thing to do. The fact that I have no real idea what this record sounds like is a testament to who the alpha males are in the project, if you're gonna look at it that way. [the whole interview at Pitchfork]

------

Carey Mercer ( Frog Eyes): The few people who have heard it say that it is really…weird. That it was trippier than they thought it would be. It sounds like we are pushing ourselves to have it not sound like a happy medium. Like, on some of the songs you can tell who wrote them, you know? I don't really know what to say about it, to tell you the truth, except that it was really cool to make it. A lot of fun. If people don't think they will like it then they shouldn't buy it. [the whole interview one post down]

An Interview with Carey Mercer of Frog Eyes

Help me welcome interviewer Mike Chadwick to BrooklynVegan. Mike was supposed to get together with Carey Mercer of Frog Eyes at their May 20, 2006 date in Montreal, but that show never happened so they met up at the rescheduled show a week later....

CAREY MERCER, FROG EYES @ MERCURY LOUNGE, NYC (more)
Carey Mercer @ Mercury Lounge

Carey: Sorry about the Montreal thing.

Mike: It's not your fault. What was that about anyway?

Carey: For this tour, we were kinda jumping back and forth between the border. When we tried to get back in, we found out the visas we had that we thought were good for a year were actually only good for six days. To get another one would have cost us three thousand dollars. So, we kind of had to make a choice. It was a really tough decision to cancel the Toronto show. We rescheduled the Montreal show, though.

Mike: I saw some pictures from a last minute show you put together and there was no one there?

Carey: Cleveland? Yeah [laugh]. That was a pretty good show, too. It was fun, but I hope something like that never happens again.

Mike: A few of the reviews I've read about the albums have referenced David Lynch. Where do you think people make that connection?

Carey: I don't know. I guess people have to put a name to what we do. I mean, I like his movies and the composer he works with….?

Mike: Angelo Badalementi?

Carey: Yeah, like, I like the music he makes, the compositions that go along with the movies, but I don't think [Lynch]'s movies really play a part in our sound. Maybe only so much as good art motivates to make art of your own. I've never really though about it.

Mike: I have also read that the first three albums were a kind of trilogy

Carey: [Shakes head no, eyes rolling]

Mike: Okay. I was gonna ask how the new album would fit with the other albums

Carey: I don't think people will hear any difference between the new album and any of the others. Those last three albums dealt with a lot of the same themes, and the new album with deal with some different themes. I don't want to give the impression to anyone that they have to listen to all three to get the "complete" picture or that if they didn't listen to this album then the others wouldn't make sense. That wasn't me.

Mike: Do you think people make too much about how "different" Frog Eyes is?

Carey: Perhaps. I think we are a really simple band, to tell you the truth. Each of us has our own place within the music and it all works out. Playing with Spencer, too, with his discordant composition background, he incorporates that. With his other band, and this isn't a diss at all, but they are more melodic. To my ears, he doesn't support the melody, he introduces something that runs beside that, which I think is awesome. If we could make "normal" sounding music, than I think we could get a bigger audience, but I don't think we are capable of that.

Mike: Do you think there is a cap or a limit to Frog Eyes potential fanbase?

Carey: Yeah, of course. I hear a lot….well, not a lot, of testimonials from people who said the first time they heard [us] they fucking hated it. Then, something happened and they grew to like it. So I think we should just plug away and win those supporters, one by one. The only positive thing about the band in terms of making a living or whatnot is that we seem to keep our fans, you know? I think Xiu Xiu is another good example of that. He doesn't sell a hundred thousand records but the fans he does have buys it all, you know? That is really awesome. We both exist in a no man's land, sometimes, between noise and pop, you know what I mean?

Mike: How do you feel that your contemporaries name check you as an influence? Xiu Xiu and Wolf Parade have mentioned in a lot of press how the Frog Eyes sound has shaped their work.

Carey: It feels nice. It doesn't feel weird or anything because I don't look at those guys as gods. They are friends. Like, If I was reading an Otis Redding biography and he was like, "Oh, by the way, my favorite band is Frog Eyes" [laughs]. I would be like "that's kind of weird" [laughs].

We just exist in the same space. My big thing is that I think the life of someone that makes art…you're essentially lost in a kind of trackless weight. And you can't ever follow anyone else's track. Not Spencer's, not Dan [Bejar]'s, not Nick Cave's, you know what I mean? Your taste is very individual.

I like it when people like my music but what I mean to say is it's not especially more nice because Xiu Xiu, who is a dude I totally respect, he's really fucking cool, or Spencer, anyone, likes what we do. It's not like I value an artist's opinion more than anyone who comes to our show. Having an opinion about contemporary indie music is not like having an opinion on the particulars on the Middle East conflict. You don't have to be a practitioner to enjoy it.

Mike: Now is Spencer still a part of the band?

Carey: He is playing with us every night on this tour. Spencer plays with us when he can, and when he can't we have a pedal steel player. There is also a guitar player we use sometimes.

Mike: What should we expect from Thunder Cloud? Is that the name?

Carey: Swan Lake.

Mike: Is Thunder Cloud the name of the album?

Carey: We don't know yet.

Mike: Okay. So where did I get Thunder Cloud?

Carey: We were gonna call it Thunder Cloud. We were originally gonna call it Swan Lake but then some people said "that sounds kind of gay," or whatever.

Mike: So, because Swan Lake was too homo you decided to go real hetero with Thunder Cloud?

Carey: Yeah. THUNDER CLOUD [laughs]. I had an idea. Do you know the Lion King? I don't even know if I have ever seen it, but there is this image of a lion in the clouds. I wanted to do that with us. So, we essentially wanted to name the band after a t-shirt idea [laughs].Dan wanted to call it Swan Lake so we decided lets do it.

Mike: Has there been any recording done?

Carey: It's done. We just have to master it.

Mike: In the context of your work, and Spencer's work, and Dan's work, is it a happy medium or does it lean to any one way? Or is it something different entirely?

Carey: The few people who have heard it say that it is really…weird.

Mike: Before I heard Notorious Lightning and Other Works, I was curious how it would sound. And when I did, I was surprised that it sounded a lot more like Destroyer than Frog Eyes.

Carey: That's the neat thing about songs is they really bear the imprint of the original writer, no matter what you do with them. With Swan Lake, I tried as hard as I could to remove that imprint, but it's still there. As much fun as it was to orchestrate that record, there is a real beauty underneath those songs that won't go away.

Mike: I read on that tour, you guys did two sets. Was it brutal or were you totally up for it?

Carey: Ah….mmm….it kinda sucked, yeah. I think we were really bad, honestly. A lot of our sounds were terrible. There was no dynamic. It was just too much, too. I think some nights we had good shows. I think the shows we did in Europe were good. It was kind of a massive undertaking. I had to take Destroyer songs and make them into Frog Eyes songs and have him sing them. And they weren't songs that necessarily worked in that environment. That was the challenge. I think if I had another shot at it, it would be real good. If we had a real environment. A band usually has more than three weeks to do all of the arrangements. We have our language and we do it well, but we're not session players, you know? I really liked playing with him, I just wish we had a little more time.

Mike: Now, if Swan Lake were to tour, if you could get the logistics worked out, would it be a Swan Lake tour, or would it be a Frog Eyes/Sunset Rubdown/Destroyer/Swan Lake tour?

Carey: [shaking head no] Oh, man [laughs]. That would be like, what, eight hours? [laughs]. No, it would be just Swan Lake. The one thing I would say about [the Destoyer/Frog Eyes tour] was that I didn't save any energy for either band. We tried to do it as vigorous and real a performance as we could possibly do. It was just kind of weird for the audience. Before that, I don't think Frog Eyes played more than forty-five minutes

Mike: That first show on the must have been something, huh?

Carey: That first show was brutal [laughs].

While the rest of the crowd felt content cheering for Angela McCluskey from the floor, Michael Stipe decided he'd do it from the stage after she finished singing "Breathe" with Telepopmusik at Don Hill's in NYC last night (June 12, 2006). Not sure why my camera decided to stop working right at that moment either (hence just this one mediocre piece of documentation). Alan Cumming stayed right in the crowd with the rest of us.

Kevin Aviance victim of gay-bashing attack in East Village

DOWNLOAD: Strut (Kevin's Cut Up Mix) (MP3)

Kevin Aviance "Four youths were charged with a hate crime assault on a gay singer who was attacked as he left a Manhattan gay bar, police said on Sunday. Kevin Aviance, 38, who scored No. 1 dance hits on the Billboard charts with 'Da Da Din' and more recently 'Alive' in 2003, was attacked late Saturday and kicked by four youths who called him 'faggot.' [Yahoo News]

Kevin "hopes to recover in time to perform at the Gay Pride Parade on June 25. Aviance was wearing a black sleeveless hoodie, black shorts and boots when he walked down East 13th Street; Clarence Patton, of the NYC Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project, summed up the fears about the attack to the NY Times, 'People will say: Here it is. Kevin Aviance in the East Village in boy's clothes, in a place that's supposed to be ours, getting beat up.' The attack occured around 1AM on Saturday night, which is not that late for the East Village - do you feel that the neighborhood is safe or unsafe then?" [Gothamist

-----

I've seen Kevin Aviance perform more times than I can count, both on stages and on the dance floor. He always makes people smile. This is extremely fuct up, and here's hoping for his fast and complete recovery.

"Bands like Deerhoof, Of Montreal, The Walkmen, Les Savy Fav, Enon, Apollo Sunshine, Beirut, Dr. Dog, Human Television, Silversun Pickups, The Harlem Shakes, Elvis Perkins, and many more exciting surprise names that are soon to be announced, are all on board…plus expect the best of the best DJs rockin out on the wheels of steel from The Rub to Questlove."

------

Silversun Pickups is a nice surprise - that's the first mention I've heard of them coming to this coast any time soon. Beirut for free to 5000 people should be interesting, interesting like Joanna Newsom to 5000 people - interesting, but good (by the way Joanna - please book another show while you're here). Don't forget Beirut has a lot of not-free more intimate shows coming up too. And don't forget Sonic Youth has two not-free shows at the Pool too.

Sonic Youth's Rather Ripped | Album Stream, Pitchfork vs The Voice, Tour Dates, etc...

Sonic YouthSonic Youth's Rather Ripped comes out Tuesday June 13, 2006.
STREAM IT AT AOL MUSIC.

"Sonic Youth are the best band in the universe, and if you can't get behind that, that's your problem. They haven't made a bad album since Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore, and Lee Ranaldo found perfect drummer Steve Shelley in 1985, and (forget Radiohead, forget Wilco) have released more good ones in the past decade than anyone in rock except—this is funny—Neil Young." [Robert Christgau - Village Voice]

Sonic Youth "Everyone has a different idea of what Sonic Youth's best record is because none are in any way perfect; they all contain various failures. But 'Rather Ripped' has a different level of authoritative power. It is a fully legitimate, clear and strong rock 'n' roll record in the band's own style. And it may really be the best one, though one fears that saying it out loud means the band's work is done." [NY Times]

Sonic Youth "When Murray Street came out in 2002, non-old Amy Phillips notoriously asserted in this very newspaper that since Sonic Youth hadn't made a good album since (1995's) Washing Machine, they should break up already. Who's to say her opinion isn't worth as much as mine? Me? Well, yeah. One concept the non-old have trouble getting their minds around is the difference between taste and judgment." [Robert Christgau - Village Voice]

Sonic Youth "Sonic Youth needn't bother impressing folks at this point. That history can also work against them, but it's boring to parade out each classic and see how Rather Ripped stacks up to it. So, hey, let's just say it's great to hear Kim, Lee, Steve, and Thurston making an album that sounds beautifully invigorated and goes down smoothly."
[NOT Amy Phillips - Pitchfork (7.5)]

"Thurston Moore: This is a beautiful view. Actually, I used to walk along this. Back then, we used to have so much fun walking around New York. I used to see Tom (Verlaine) shopping for magazines at magazine vendors on the street and I would follow him around to see what he was buying. He would always flick, but never buy. I was curious what this guy was buying because maybe it would lead me to some kind of communication." [Harp Magazine]

Broken Social Scene & Metric playing the China Club?

Are Broken Social Scene and Metric playing the China Club in NYC on July 9, 2006 (2 days after BSS plays Prospect Park)? Is it a private show for WPLJ (home of Rob Thomas and Jewel) contest winners?? Seems unlikely, I know. I'll post something if I find out.

Sirius Playlist - Week 2

Sirius My second week on Sirius radio nearly killed me. I wasn't sure if I was gonna continue the "retrospective" format. I tried at first, but wasn't liking the outcome, so I switched to just picking songs from all over the place. In turn, I waited 'till the last minute, underestimated how long it would take me, stayed up way too late, and went in to do my show unprepared and hardly able to speak. Not only wasn't I happy with the show, I felt like a zombie for the rest of the week.

I think I've come up with a better system for going forward - one that won't take up too much time and wipe me out in the process. Week two playlist (five days late) below....

The Donnas have "parted ways" with Atlantic Records

DonnasOn May 19, the following was posted on The Donnas' public message board:

We would like to officially announce that we have parted ways with Atlantic Records. The decision was entirely mutual and completely amicable and will not impact the band, nor will it impact upon the writing, recording or touring for the next Donnas album.

We want to thank you for all your support over the years and hope that you will continue to support us during this time of transition. As soon as we know where we're going to land next, we'll let you all know!

Love,
The Donnas

Doveman + David Thomas Broughton | Tour Dates

DOWNLOAD: Ever Rotating Sky by DTB (MP3)

DAVID THOMAS BROUGHTON
David Thomas Broughton

Doveman and David Thomas Broughton are touring together. They plays Joe's Pub in NYC tonight (Sunday, June 11, 7:00) and they're ending the tour back in NYC at Tonic on June 27th.

"David Thomas Broughton released his own debut LP last year on Plug Research. It's called The Complete Guide to Insufficiency, but most people who heard it found it completely sufficient. Impressive considering it's just him, his acoustic guitar, some loops, and a drum machine. Doveman no doubt appreciate this minimalism as it takes up less room in the van." [Pitchfork]

DAVID THOMAS BROUGHTON REVIEWS
8.4 @ Pitchfork
8.4 @ Cokemachineglow
4 out 5 @ Prefix
love @ MOKB

This post focuses more on David than Doveman because:
a) David came all the way from England for this tour.
b) I've loving his music and never posted about him before.
c) You already know about my crush on Doveman.
