huh, the second stage looks better than the main stage.

MAN MAN before dirty on purpose???
STARS HEADLINGING ANYTHING?
this is officially the worst siren ever
more reason to get stoned on the beach
Posted by ??? | June 22, 2006 3:25 AM
see some deadboy andthen its over to the side stage all day until the sisters light it up all night
Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2006 7:43 AM
She Wants Revenge = Weird Al fronting an Interpol cover band
Posted by lo | June 22, 2006 8:26 AM
Looks good to me. Deadboy & the Elephantmen -> Man Man -> Celebration (plenty of time to sneak closer for) -> Tapes 'n Tapes - > The Cribs - > Art Brut - > Stars
Perfect!
Posted by Chris | June 22, 2006 8:58 AM
is anybody even going to watch she wants revenge? doubtful. this lineup really is a letdown.
Posted by bryan | June 22, 2006 9:29 AM
Hasn't every music blogger already seen Stars about 50 times?
Thought they go on early, I *highly* recommend every see Priestess.
Posted by Glenn | June 22, 2006 10:00 AM
sorry, not everyone out there is a 'music blogger'
Posted by notablog | June 22, 2006 10:13 AM
actually a good point 'notablog'
though glenn - i've never seen stars. so no, they haven't. i'd like to but they alone are not worth dealing with the crowds and insanity of Siren just to see.

@#$%!

I don't know about Stars not being worth it... I saw them three times last year and they are incredible live. The fact that their set overlaps with the Scissor Sisters is so bad though!
Posted by tina* | June 22, 2006 11:08 AM
I figured they would overlap. They were the two most likely headliners
Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2006 11:11 AM
Both bands are not headliner worthy. What happened to the Voice?
Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2006 11:16 AM
Stars headlined and sold out Webster Hall. Scissor Sisters not only play HUGE shows in Europe, they've headlined and sold out Hammerstein or Roseland here. Neither did it on hype alone - both worked their way up to that point. How are they not headliners?
Posted by bing | June 22, 2006 11:27 AM
yeah this year is weird, it's all new bloggy bands instead of actual good bands. Scissor Sisters and Stars and all the rest do nothing for me. There's not one band i'd be interested (maybe Art Brut but that's it) in seeing on that lineup. But i don't even live in NY anymore so it's not an issue...
Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2006 11:32 AM
"How are they not headliners?" -
Seriously! Are Spoon any bigger than Scissor Sisters. Are Mates of State any bigger than Stars. Have you ever been to this festival?
Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2006 11:33 AM
"it's all new bloggy bands instead of actual good bands. Scissor Sisters and Stars and all the rest do nothing for me. There's not one band i'd be interested (maybe Art Brut but that's it) in seeing on that lineup" -
To anyone else who feels this way - Please don't go. More room for the rest of us who realize how lucky we are to have a great free festival in Brooklyn.
Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2006 11:37 AM
"it's all new bloggy bands instead of actual good bands."
that is the dumbest statement I ever heard. What bands played in the past that were "actual good bands"?
Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2006 11:37 AM
Mates of States were another bad choice.
A *festival* headliner should have several albums and have a following besides a bunch of bloggers. I have no problem with a novelty act like the Scissors Sisters headlining, but have at least a few album under your belt.
Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2006 11:53 AM
Mates of State DID have a few under their belt. And Stars have two excellent albums and I'm sure another one on the way.
Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2006 12:05 PM
Well, Stars have three albums under their belts, so....
"To anyone else who feels this way - Please don't go. More room for the rest of us who realize how lucky we are to have a great free festival in Brooklyn."
Exactly.

"it's all new bloggy bands instead of actual good bands. There's not one band i'd be interested (maybe Art Brut but that's it) in seeing on that lineup"
Damn those "bloggy" bands. Maybe we can get some "radio" bands. Or "magazine" bands or insert your "media of choice" bands. What a dumb comment.
Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2006 12:14 PM
i saw Stars w/New Pornographers in Prospect Park last summer and they just seemed really middleoftheroad to me. don't worry, not going, even if I still lived in NY, i'd sit this one out.
In the past years they had Spoon, Brendan Benson, TV on the Radio, Fiery Furnaces, Mission of Burma, Ted Leo, Sleater Kinney, The Shins, YYY's..in comparison this is kinda ehhhh
Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2006 12:15 PM
While it would be nice to have another real killer band like Mission of Burma or Idlewild on the bill, Stars are a great live band and more than worth a trip to Coney Island.
I'm not sure what Glenn is talking about (then again, I'm not a music blogger)...if anyone saw Stars 50 times I would assume they are a great fan of the band, and would be thrilled they are headlining at Siren.

Well put.

you guys should all take a look at the lineups from 2002 and 2003 and try to tell me this is anywhere nearly as good.

you are forgetting that in 2002 and 2003 we didnt have as many "Indie" rock festivals or "indie" rocke freindlt festivals. A few years ago these bands were dying to get in front of as many people as the Siren provides. Now, you can have your pick of any cool festival with 100,000 people. C'mon man, the landscape has changed over the last 5 years. Furthermore, 3 years later in hindsight a lot of those bands that played siren are cool, but had no idea who tv on the radio was when I saw them at Siren.
Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2006 12:40 PM
"it's all new bloggy bands instead of actual good bands" hah - I think it's a mistake to claim the tail is wagging the dog regarding music and music blogs.
Stars have been around since 2001, not exactly new. And their success certainly wasn't predicated by bloggers.
Posted by tina* | June 22, 2006 12:43 PM
Not to mention in 2002 and 2003 you didn't have bloggers that were trying to make a band "their own". We are moving more toward hyped bands than established bands.
Still, lesser bands = less crowd. I hope these bands are good live. (I have only seen Stars who weren't that good)
Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2006 12:43 PM
It seems like I've seen Stars 50 times, and I do like the band. Scissor Sisters, on the other hand, haven't played NYC half as many times as Stars has over the last three years (and that's being generous).
Maybe some people haven't seen Stars. I don't know what rock they've been hiding under, but I guess it's possible. So they may be between a rock and a hard place...Scissor Sisters or Stars? Stars or Scissor Sisters?
As if often the case in this town, there are competing shows on any one night and one frequently needs to with the band he/she hasn't seen a handful of times. For most New Yorkers, I would think the band to see at Siren would be Scissor Sisters. If I saw a band 50 times I think I would have filled my quota. It's time to see something else.
Posted by Glenn | June 22, 2006 12:44 PM
Bloggy.
Posted by Nineteen-ninety-never | June 22, 2006 12:46 PM
wouldn't you say the majority of these bands got famous this year? new isn't bad of course, where would we be without new bands? I'm talking quality though. Nothing here is that great, IN MY OPINION. i'm your basic indie rocker and i can always find a band or 2 on these things that i really wanna see. but not this year!
Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2006 12:47 PM
priestess, man man, the stills, art brut and the scissor sisters are all great.
check yourselves and get with it. stop being pretentious fucktard bitches
Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2006 12:49 PM
"Furthermore, 3 years later in hindsight a lot of those bands that played siren are cool" -
Good point. And perhaps it will be the same with this years lineup. That's one of the best things about Siren.
Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2006 12:49 PM
basic indie rocker = douche bag.
but then again im your basic asshole who makes fun of others.
Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2006 12:51 PM
The only bad thing about the lineup is:
SHE WANTS REVENGE.
Heard bad things about Roger Sisters, too. but the rest are GREAT!
Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2006 12:59 PM
it's difficult to throw the hindsight thing into question, though, since both in 2002 and 2003, the entire lineup was built of pretty solid acts. each of these years had a band opening each stage that was pretty much a mystery to most festivalgoers. this year, though, the lineups are basically a mystery with the exception of three or four bands. this is really just an example of the voice not really caring about siren enough to make the long subway ride out there and the sunburn worth it, coupled with, like someone else pointed out, the masses of indie rock festivals that have sprung up since 2004.
Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2006 1:16 PM
sorry that you're not knowledgeable enough about music enough to know these bands. I've seen most of them a bunch of times and, as i said, they're all really damn good.
Don't complain because you're ignorant.
Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2006 1:19 PM
its Blogtastic ! ...But the Scissors Sisters just arent cool...sorry...and they arent very good either...bad 70's kitschy disco funk..even if they werent gay...I'd still think they were pretty gay (in a 3rd grade sort of way)
Posted by oh | June 22, 2006 1:34 PM
Looks like everyone I wanna see is on the Stillwell stage, so I'll be able to stake out a spot early and keep it. Same thing happened when I went in '04. Yeah Stillwell!

"this is really just an example of the voice not really caring about siren enough to make the long subway ride out there and the sunburn worth it"
Speak for yourself. I wish I had the money to attend some of the larger festivals, but as I don't, 30 minutes on the subway to see at least six bands that I'm excited about, and for FREE, seems like a pretty sweet deal to me.
Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2006 1:49 PM
sweet deal is an understatement
Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2006 2:25 PM
"Maybe some people haven't seen Stars. I don't know what rock they've been hiding under, but I guess it's possible."
Glenn, this city is much larger than Webster Hall. A free festival is a great chance for people to see bands they've never seen/might not otherwise see.
Posted by J | June 22, 2006 2:32 PM
just go see man man. if it was "the village voice presents man man at 230 in the afternoon at coney island for free" it would still be the cant miss event of the summer.
man man rules. really this band changes everything if you have not seen them yet.
Posted by zack | June 22, 2006 4:02 PM
Man Man, Art Brut, Stars all playing on one stage? I guess I'm not leaving the Stilwell Stage the whole day.
Posted by Paul | June 23, 2006 1:02 PM
Have we forgotten about Serena Maneesh and Celebration? Both of those albums are amazing so it really doesnt matter who else it playing.
Quit it with the hissy fit bullshit.
Posted by Jacksonnn | June 23, 2006 4:52 PM
ummm.....this rock ive been living under has been littered with shows like the new pornographers with stars (who then "fell off the bill") in lancaster, pa. yes, i live in lancaster and siren shows are STILL precious things to me. art brut leading into my favorite band I'VE NEVER HAD A CHANCE TO SEE??? well worth the train/subway fare. anyhow why am i even posting here? i get to see man man play house parties in the woods, i dont have a blog and i hate (yes- let's make it---desPISE) skinny hipster/poser/brats! take that, you flatulent pabst swilling williamsburg-ites!!!
Posted by djebel | June 24, 2006 5:36 AM
Why are you even posting here? To call people names! Awesome! There aren't enough people like you on the internet! Bring your friends.
Posted by J | June 24, 2006 11:56 AM
call names? how about something called "necessary nomenclature?" scientists have done it for centuries for a reason---i aint judging. im just espousing what i SEE when i GO to webster hall or anywhere ELSE in "mommy and daddy's money-land" a.k.a. N.Y.C. just comprehend, then deal.
Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2006 2:21 PM
can anyone recommend a good, affordable place to stay in NYC?? a hostel maybe...
Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2006 1:49 PM
Serena Maneesh kills it live. you complainers should check them out. Priestess too. I wouldn't mind seeing Scissor sisters as well because I have never seen them live (its a FREE show afterall!!!)
Posted by hello jonny | July 12, 2006 11:29 AM
Does coney island get cold like jones beach?
