thought WAS were much better than AM; think the crowd was with AM only cuz of the hype; didn't think they were particularly engaging.

Good show that would've been better if it weren't at Roseland.

the 7th pic with his back turned looks like tha bomb.

Roseland sucks and WAS was better than AM, definitely.
Posted by Eduardo | June 15, 2006 10:18 AM
They didnt have an encore. Thats a fucking joke.

Awesome pix. Were you just below the front stage (photog section?)?

as usual, the ignorant hipsters spout off. the only thing they got right is that roseland SUCKS.
it sucked for the pistols, it sucked for radiohead and it still sucks.
but ANYONE who thinks 'we are scientists'
surpass(ed) ARCTIC MONKEYS most definitely have their heads quite far up their own smug asses.
i got there early to check out 'we are scientists' and, as my nephew so eloquently put it, "they sucked. bad. possibly the worst band we've ever seen."
the NY blogger crowd seems to have this fascination with bands they consider 'hip' but which in reality are, for the most part, talentless in every way. there isn't an american band worthy of washing the monkey's underwear, let alone challenge them musically.
if 'we are scientists' continue to issue cds (and i doubt they'll be many), the whole of their catalogue will never sell as many copies as the monkey's first release. but although the numbers will bear me out, it's simply a matter of quality.
my guess is the hipster, blogger know-nothings have had their ipods turned up too loud for too long.

@ darkglobe:
WAS's set was great, but I really wasn't into Jet. They didn't play any songs I know
Posted by Yango Jenkins | June 15, 2006 11:22 AM
though I happen to agree that Arctic Monkeys are are the better band, you really need to get over yourself darkglobe.
Posted by lightglobe | June 15, 2006 11:30 AM
very hard to deal with the musical ignorance out there, lightglobe (i'll try and lighten up, though).
the real kicker were the 2 lindsay lohan-wannabes standing next to me who talked ABOVE both bands all night but managed to cheer wildly after each song.

As a 42 guy who still trys to see young bands and has been going to NYC clubs for over 25 yaers, I thought the show was terrific. AM has the potential to be a major band and maybe, hopefully, get young people listening to real rock n roll again. I liked WAS, but I've seen a lot of bands as good or better than them come and go quickly. AM is too good not to stick around.

dark: MY guess is you're pissed mostly at having to post your vitriol in someone else's comments section. couldn't start your own blog? try easing up on the senseless hyperbole.
haha i'm arguing online.
Posted by froyoma | June 15, 2006 11:57 AM
i think both bands are shit. yeah that's right. I'M SO biTTER AND ANGRY!!!!
Posted by boredglobe | June 15, 2006 12:00 PM
Like Rufus, I'm an "old guy" but not too old to know a great band when I hear/see one. AM is definitely one of the more interesting but still accessible bands I've heard in a while. Very catchy riffs, great lyics and rhythms. They played tight and will probably get better as a stage act over time.
Posted by Buster | June 15, 2006 12:46 PM
why did dark globe go to the show?
Posted by joe | June 15, 2006 12:57 PM
went to the show because arctic monkeys are the most exciting/talented band i've heard in 10+years.
as another old guy (46) i've seen the best bands in their prime. what's changed is that people nowadays seem to care more about the buzz than the band.
what exactly is the point of holding up a cellphone to take crappy pictures from a mile away? what happened to DANCING? or LISTENING?
why do people go to shows to talk during songs? because they are spoiled children.
Posted by darkglobe | June 15, 2006 1:21 PM
haha. i see me in the front row!! looking stupid of course. basically all the front row pics are me, 2 friends, and my sister.
awesome.
personally, i had a GREAT GREAT time. who cares if they're "hip" or not. it's all about whether you like what you hear. and i certainly do.
Posted by sammi | June 15, 2006 1:31 PM
I thought AM were more buzzed than WAS
Posted by Eduardo | June 15, 2006 3:37 PM
they were all buzzed - i was backstage, that place was covered in bottles and reeeeeked hahah
ohhh you were talkin' about hype..
Posted by the big shmill | June 15, 2006 4:08 PM
I thought the concert was enjoyable, aside from rowdy Sheffield girls persistently elbowing the back of my head. What do you guys think of AM's stage presence?
Brooklyn Vegan, how I long for a press pass.
Posted by Dee | June 15, 2006 4:37 PM
NO ENCORE! JOKE.
Posted by Anonymous | June 15, 2006 4:46 PM
AM can at least hold my attention, and I think they have amazing presence on stage for a band so young (or of any age). They my be more hyped than WAS, but it also much more deserved.
Subjective opinion...WAS' sound is forgettable, and their lyrics don't do much for me either.
Posted by ad | June 15, 2006 7:19 PM
Encore's are more of a US thing...
Also I think they are a bit pretentious.
Thats just me.
Posted by Jamie | June 15, 2006 8:25 PM
AM have never, ever done an encore - real fans would know that.
backstage passes are crazy delicious
Posted by the big shmill | June 15, 2006 9:44 PM
Amazing...i'm in the crowd pics on the left side, the short girl next to the guy in the white shirt. WAS was amazing and i can't wait to see em 6.30, AM was very good as well...my 3rd time seeing them and it was the most i've ever seen them into their show.
Posted by S | June 15, 2006 10:13 PM
The Monkeys Never Do Encores........They Kinda remind me of when The Strokes didn't do encores for their first couple yrs, but then they realized that the fans didn't appreciate that too much and started doing encores....well they did it for hammerstein ........but neways....we are scientists have nothing on AM.....In my opinion they suck and they probbaly will be forgotten this time next yr.
Posted by Daniele | June 16, 2006 9:49 AM
I changed my mind. Both bands are doing great. Period.
Posted by Eduardo | June 16, 2006 5:30 PM
tsk. you Americans...
Posted by rowdy sheffield girl | June 16, 2006 5:37 PM
i thought the show was soo much fun...we are scientists weren't great...did anybody else meet Carl Barat from the libertines after the show...he's amazing

I don't think enjoyment of one band mutually excludes the other. If they played each other in football [soccer] or football [not soccer], I'm sure both sides would have fun and that's that.
Then they'd go out for neopolitan icecream afterwards; i just feel several flavors should be able to share the same damn cone.
Posted by jerry | June 16, 2006 6:14 PM
veeeeery wise jerry.
Posted by darkglobe | June 16, 2006 6:18 PM
Ha, I'm in two of those pictures.
I had a great time. The sound kind of sucked, but the crowd was awesome. AM are amazing and totally deserve the hype.

I got to the show after WAS played because I just wasn't that interested. I thought the Arctic Monkeys were a total blast. They played tight and I loved hearing everybody (myself included) singing along. My husband left the general area about 3/4 of the way through to hang at the bar. He liked the band, but thought the sound mix, etc was absolutely dreadful. While at the bar he ran into Denis Leary who thought the same thing. Personally, I don't care that much - I just wanted to have a great time, which I did.

The AM's drummer is the coolest one. No more shows at Roseland, please! the sound is terrible...
Posted by Eduardo | June 20, 2006 12:32 AM
wow, glad they played well in NYC. Too bad they barly showed up in Baltimore. W.A.S. were great as ever, but thre 'Monkeys mailed it in. And the crowd was full of contest winners or something... maybe the lads are headed towards that enviable Top 40 crowd.
Posted by robbie_fearless | June 20, 2006 9:39 PM
Over here in britian the Arctic Monkeys are considered a joke act by most people. They can't play, have no tunes and aren't remotely ready for the big time. Their next album will be their last. Its not that the emperor has no clothes. It's that the emperor is stark bollock naked and is openly flashing his tackle for all to see.
Posted by jack carter | August 22, 2006 9:37 PM
jack carter it's because british people only like musicians for one second, over hype them, then hate them two seconds after. your opinion is worthless because you all are so ridiculously fickled.
