Keren Ann - "Chelsea Hotel" [more here]
Regina Spektor - "Chelsea Hotel"
The Strokes & Regina Spektor - "Post Modern Girls"
("Chelsea Hotel is a Leonard Cohen song)
"On her new release (one of my favorite albums of the year), Begin to Hope, singer, songwriter and pianist Regina Spektor sings in her native Russian for the first time." [NPR]
"The Strokes, pals who famously gave Spektor her first big break by bringing her on tour as an opener, were among her inspirations. 'The thing that blew my mind first hearing the Strokes was that they were the closest I had heard rock come to classical,' she says. 'Their music is extraordinarily orderly and composed. It's almost like Mozart.' When 'Better,' Hope's first single, needed some oomph, Strokes guitarist Nick Valensi stepped in and lent the song its precise, driving kick." [Village Voice]
"A new film about Leonard Cohen does a remarkable thing: it gets him to talk. And what a pleasure it is. Here's Cohen, for example, on his long-standing reputation as a ladies' man - it was, he says, 'a joke. It caused me to laugh bitterly the 10,000 nights I spent alone.'" [Telegraph]

Rufus Wainwright also does a cover of "Chelsea Hotel;" I'm not sure if it's available for download anywhere, as I've just heard him do it at concerts. It's predictably lovely.
And while I like the Strokes and Regina Spektor well enough...comparing them to Mozart??? Seriously?

This is one of my favorite Cohen songs and she pretty much sucked out all of the emotion that makes it so great... the cutesy wootsy shit needs to stop.
Try a version by Laura Burhenn on an album called Wanderlust. She's 2nd half of Georgie James who's out with Camera Obscura.

That Strokes comment is laughable.

Iron & Wine's cover of Chelsea Hotel is worth checking out as well.
Ms. Spektor's new release is a 2006 standout but for some reason not getting the indie hype it should be. The album is unpeggable and totally addictive with some of the strongest vocals of the the year.
While we're on the subject of vocals, the Strokes should start singing through filters again - his voice is not very good but the filters utilized on the first two album gave it an interesting and raw edge.

Lloyd Cole's version of "Chelsea Hotel" was excellent, as were several of the covers on the original Cohen tribute, I'M YOUR FAN. Shame they brought in all these new pretenders for this round, giving nobody from that album a nod...

Julian is the The Stroke's vocalist.
I don't know how she could see anything classical in the strokes. I think she is great but the strokes... honestly...

If there were any justice in the world Lloyd Cole would be in prison for his cover of "chelsea hotel"
The person who said this cover was good belongs in a mental institution.
I heard this song by random. It is without question the most soulless, generic and downright horrible covers of a great song. What kind of psychopath would make "chelsea hotel' into an upbeat soft-rock abortion? Lloyd Cole must die.

I just lost a good deal of respect for Regina for that cover of Chelsea Hotel.
I really like her, but Cohen is a genious and she killed it.

How is the Strokes comment laughable? Best band to come out in the 21st century with 2 classic albums in a row. I mean, seriously. Name one other band that accomplished that. White Stripes had consistently great albums, but none could be considered flawless, while the same goes with Spoon (2nd favorite).
