I didn't see Sonic Youth @ CBGB | NPR will stream DC
SONIC YOUTH @ CBGB | JUNE 13, 2006 (CRED)

I was at Radiohead. Robert Christgau was probably at Sonic Youth. 'Modest micah' definitely was....
I stood at the stage next to nick zinner, his girlfriend and thurston moore's mother. the band was in a fantastic mood and played their entire new LP, "Rather Ripped" perfectly from start to finish. this show really enforced how strong the new record is.
jem cohen was there filming a documentary and he asked me if he could film me for it. i said sure, so he sat me down in one of the backrooms and had an assistant shine a sungun at me while i looked into the lens of his super 8mm camera.
this was the first time sonic youth had played CB's since 1992. i had a good night.
ps - mark ibold from pavement is the new bassist/guitarist.

The June 15th Washington DC show will be streamed live on NPR (and then archived and available forever)

Am I the only one who thinks Ripped is at best mediocre?

i dig the first song but yeah, pretty meh. but i have to say the last few albums all have some merit.
im surprised theyre not getting more experimental considering thurston's fascination with noise bands like wolf eyes and all that stuff.
as for mark ibold...nice to see him playing music again. only time i ever see him is when he rides his bike in the east village or is pouring drinks at great jones.

One of the members (singer/guitarist/drummer) of Trail of Dead was there as well.
Show was pretty good. Mostly new stuff, short encore with older material. Guitars sounded fantastic. Thurston's singing was great and Kim Gordon is still the Linda McCartney of indie rock.

Thurston and Co. are still doing a lot of experimental stuff, just not really so much for Sonic Youth. I think their SYR releases and various other ventures has allowed them to pursue the noisy stuff, while the Sonic Youth albums are now more understated and filled with more midtempo hooks. I think ever since EVOL they've pursued a less noisy, more song-based approach. For better or worse (depending on your tastes), Experimental Jet Set was probably the fullest realization of this.

i think experimental jet set is horribly underrated in their catalog.

I agree. I've never understood why people seem to despise that album so much.

steve buscemi was there too.

"Kim Gordon is still the Linda McCartney of indie rock."
Are you slagging off Kim Gordon?
Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2006 7:07 PM
or giving linda too much credit?

steve buscemi's kid's band is awesome
