"all hip-hop is garbage and is turning inner city youth into an army of callous materialists"

Flashback 30 years...

all punk rock is garbage and is turning inner city youth into an army of callous antagonists

Flashback another 20 years.....

all rock n roll is garbage and is turning the youth into an army of callous pelvis-thrusting heathens

I see no redeeming qualities in 99% of hip hop...

and i find it hilarious that a genre that is so based in mysoginy, homophobia, violence, drug dealing,wife/gf beating, racism, and just generally ugly glorification of the all of the above manages to dodge pretty much all critique...why are these "artists" never called out?

and yet we hate Pete Doherty because he does drugs....

if you want to hear someone call out hip hopers, check out the writings of stanley crouch...here's a taste...

What a bunch of ignorant sluts you are. Just like 90% of all indepedent music is crap, so is 90% of all hip-hop. Don't give your opinion on things you clearly have no clue about. Go back to your NY Post.

You can basically say this about most forms of popular entertainment.

If your grasp of hip-hop is just 50 Cent, please, don't bother giving your opinion, its going to be moronic.

And you misspeled misogyny.

Posted by Reg! | June 23, 2006 1:39 PM

And I mispelled...misspelled, lol.

Posted by Reg! | June 23, 2006 1:40 PM

hip hop USED to be important-and relevant (see: Public Enemy, Leaders of the New School, NWA, A Tribe Called Quest, etc.)

NOW it's all about 'champagne, cognac, misogynist lyrics, drugs, SENSELESS violence and "bling" (what an ignorant term).

99.9% of what is called hip hop today is absolute crap. and that's everything jay-z or puff diddy ever produced (or pimped).

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2006 1:44 PM

I mean, I never understood how easy it is for people to just write off a hip-hop because of who gets the mainstream airplay. Is rock complete crap because Fall Out Boy is ominipresent?

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2006 2:29 PM

hahaha people please stop talking about hip hop if you dont know anything about it.

Posted by wes | June 23, 2006 2:31 PM

uhoh, it's wes. The moral and intellectual police man guy. Thanks wes, what would we do without you!!!

you're the mao zedong of this message board, and i mean that with love and good vibes.

I've got 99 problems and ticketmaster ain't one.

Posted by musicsnobbery | June 23, 2006 2:41 PM

snobbery, we all know you have an "in" at ticketmaster...turning tricks for all these tix.

Posted by Axl Foley | June 23, 2006 2:45 PM

If you think it USED to be important, then you USED to listen to it. The fact is that just because you dont seek out the good hip hop (which you HAD to back then, remember Father MC? Positive K? Skee-Lo? Heavy D? that was popular then) doesnt mean it doesnt exist. This website is a testament to music outside of the mainstream.

I think that although maybe 99% of hip hop sucks, I would venture to say that about the same amount of all music does as well. It is all about finding the stuff that doesn't. If you don't take the time to, then you don't have any room to be critical.

Posted by Black Cloud | June 23, 2006 2:46 PM

www.earfuzz.com has some cuts from two albums: 'Runaway Slave' & 'Word... Life' that should help the hip-hop-kicks-ass argument. drink it up; it's delicious.

i bet in 14 years blogs will post tracks from 2006 hip-hop albums that slipped through the cracks of today's mainstream and we'll talk about the "good old days." just got to give the cream time to rise to the top.

Posted by b | June 23, 2006 3:01 PM

b and black cloud, you may be right. yes, 99% of music does suck (and that includes CYHSY, fiery furnaces, we are scientists, etc.). NOT just hip hop.

clue me in to some relevant hip hop that's actually SAYING something. i'll definitely listen

ps - i love Clipse!

good rap music = jedi mind tricks, rjd2 + whoever, dead prez, some ghostface, and supraliminal

it's about finding the good rap, just like finding the good indy music or whatever - obviously 50 cent and fallout boy choke dick, come on

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2006 3:16 PM

to the clipse lover - i'd really focus on SUPRALIMINAL

he's just some kid from boston, he's pretty underground but gaining a lot of popularity in NYC - he should get big pretty soon

www.suprahiphop.com

good rap music still exists

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2006 3:18 PM

ugh. when did motherfuckers get so uptight and stop having fun with music. if all rap was political commentary i'd stop listening to it. senseless violence is the best kind. if indie rock was constantly rambling on about political injustices i'd stop listening to it too.

and how's someone going to call out rap for its talk of drug dealing and then place Pete fucking Doherty above all that???

neato thing i learned today: i was able to extend my alloted 3 mins before tickets were put back into the pool by going in to update my billing. it gives you 1 min to update. so i initially got 3 mins, posted on bv, "updated" billing info and extended 25-30 secs; "updated" a few more times, and only after the fourth did they drop my initial 3 mins to 2:30.

Posted by rad | June 23, 2006 5:21 PM

bv probally doesnt want this here but:

i have 2 tickets for this exact show. purchased them a half hour ago on ticketmaster. make me an offer @ subliminalguy@gmail.com or check this out:

FIGHT CAPITALISM WITH CAPITALISM!

Posted by The Delay | June 23, 2006 7:37 PM

"FIGHT CAPITALISM WITH CAPITALISM!"

I don't have anything against scalpers (scalpers are doing something that every single business ever has done: buy a good and sell it for more than you bought it for), but someone who rationalizes scalping tickets by saying "fight capitalism with capitalism" is a moron. Think about what you're saying, The Delay. While you might think of yourself as a capitalism-fighting rebel, you... forget it, you're an idiot.

man i dont think anyone can understand most of jay-z's best lines unless you do some background checks, if you guys just think that when he says his lines that what the lines mean is the meaning and there is nothing in between the lines, then you guys are just too shallow to see the real meaning of the lines.

In blueprint 2, Jay-z says "I set the trap just to see dude react, and now, now you'se can't leave"

Has anyone seen "A Bronx Tale" with robert di niro? that movie has a scene where a gangster traps a bunch of bikers in a bar by closing the door and says "Now you'se can't leave".

"To all the Lauras of the world, I feel your pain
To all the Christies in every cities and Tiffany Lanes
We all hustlers, in love with the same thang"

TIFFANY LANE is the real name of Charlie Baltimore who was once a female-hustler type of gal. She used to stuff caine in her bra, and she even has a song with Ja rule called "Down-ass Bitch" which the video shows how hardcore she was.

So unless you really took your time and figured out what JAY is saying isntead of thinking that hes saying what he is and being critical about it, really you don't know anything about hip hop, and i think you guys must be stupid. Becuz its not that hard to understand.
