DOWNLOAD: Strut (Kevin's Cut Up Mix) (MP3)

Kevin Aviance "Four youths were charged with a hate crime assault on a gay singer who was attacked as he left a Manhattan gay bar, police said on Sunday. Kevin Aviance, 38, who scored No. 1 dance hits on the Billboard charts with 'Da Da Din' and more recently 'Alive' in 2003, was attacked late Saturday and kicked by four youths who called him 'faggot.' [Yahoo News]

Kevin "hopes to recover in time to perform at the Gay Pride Parade on June 25. Aviance was wearing a black sleeveless hoodie, black shorts and boots when he walked down East 13th Street; Clarence Patton, of the NYC Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project, summed up the fears about the attack to the NY Times, 'People will say: Here it is. Kevin Aviance in the East Village in boy's clothes, in a place that's supposed to be ours, getting beat up.' The attack occured around 1AM on Saturday night, which is not that late for the East Village - do you feel that the neighborhood is safe or unsafe then?" [Gothamist

I've seen Kevin Aviance perform more times than I can count, both on stages and on the dance floor. He always makes people smile. This is extremely fuct up, and here's hoping for his fast and complete recovery.

Aviance was scheduled to sing at next week's Gay Pride events in NYC, but those events have been cancelled as his "jaw is now wired shut."

Totally fucking wrong.

not a fan but jeez, sat night in the east shame.

what bothers me most is that no one stepped in.

Posted by sam | June 12, 2006 5:01 PM

unfortunately, no one ever steps in

i don't know what puts me off more, the incident, or the fact that this happened in the east village at 1am

i would have LOVED to step in...this type of thing drives me insane.

about 2 yrs ago, i was stepping out of niagara around 2am-ish on a saturday. all of sudden, i saw an SUV stop abruptly at the light on A & 7th, and 3 or 4 young kids jumped out and attacked someone walking on the west side of Ave A. they jumped out and attacked him and then back in the car all within 20 seconds or so. it happened so fast, no one had time to jump in, but people certainly came to the aid of the victim as the attackers sped off. enough people were around helping the man that i actually did not stick around (i felt i would just be in way). but i have always wondered if that attack was a hate crime or what... i have no idea. but when i read about this latest attack, i immediately thought of that night a couple of years ago. east village or not, if an attack is premeditated, it can happen anywhere in front of a number of people. and yes, that is a complete shame.

its embarrasing for new yorkers that such a thing can happen in this day and age in our own neighboorhoods!
Kevin is not just a singer and a club legend, but also a an extremely vocal and active member of our community. He has had the courage and convition to say and do things while others queens have just stood around waiting for some one to wave the flag.He is an inspiration to me and many many other queens. I can not imagine what the New york nightlife scene would have been without him, for that matter i can't imagine what my life would have been.
Its time for all the queers to return the favor; raise your voice!!!!

This is definitely an intolerable incident and I really hope the suspects are located and punished appropriately. It's funny how the papers say crime in NYC has dropped while crime in other cities has risen. Crime here may be dropping, but it seems to me that when a crime strikes here in NYC they are particularly brutal.

May he make a rapid, complete recovery and may those who beat him not only be brought to justice but realize the error of their ways.

is he the one who screams like a siren?

OK . I know plenty of people who get beatup and wrongfully arrested by police, just because they're black . Shouldn't that be a hate crime as well .

First, I would like to say that I had just learned about this horrible incident last night by watching the Tyra Banks show. Because I am a black women and personally experience a hate and race discrimination crime, and had to fight for my civil rights, I was overwhelmed with hurt to even hear about this so late. Because of this type of crime taht should have been more knowledge all over the world, by being well explosed to the public like it should have been shows the lack of awareness on how these types of crimes is reality. I truly believe that it comes from others and ignorance of those who commit these crimes. For the love of GOD, we need to let those individuals who protray these unkindly, negative behavior and instead use this type of anger without violence towards the good force towards drug dealers, child molesters, murders and most important to stop this hate crime anti-campaigns to halt such behaviors. Kevin, even though I disagree with man and man etc, but because I am not GOD and GOD don't hate his creatures and children who believe in him, and if he hate, he wouldn't have created you. You are loved by him and others who share your pain. Who are we to judge and per-say do what these ignorant men did to you. I feel that they just did the biggest sin of all and that is what they did to you. As a black women who love GOD and faced racial attacks, I know what Martin Luther King and other civil movements, I myself experience and felt what he and other had to overcome all over the world to alert hate and discrimination crimes. You just did what GOD expected of you, to turn this negative victimized event around to a positive stand. Stand up for your rights and you have the right to live in a free hate surroundings in this world. God Bless and I wish you well. Many Blessings and healing from this unthinkable cruel, and unjustice act.

it's too bad. i don't know why everyone is so surprised it happened in NYC though. it happens everywhere and anywhere. NYC is not a mecca for tolerance.

I reckon this is best thing to happen in new york lately. we should be thankful to those four young men for cleaning up our streets. the injustice was done to them.

This particular case of bashing should be prosecuted as a hate crime ONLY because the victim is African-American. On the other hand, gay bashing in itself doesn't warrant status as a hate crime. How can it when the predominant Caucasian gay "community" is blatantly racist itself? Several minority civil rights organizations have reported numerous complaints of blatant racist bashing of Asian and Black men by White American gay men throughout the internet.

One particular gay porn site, which touts itself as the largest gay porn site in the world, Just Us Boys (JUB), didn't even have an anti-bashing, anti-racist policy until an anonymous member of the board pushed the moderators, who are all Caucasian, mostly American and Australian, to institute such a policy. On the other hand, the moderators were resistant to institute such a policy.

When the anonymous member of JUB, who happens to be a fully licensed physician who completed residency in August '07 and a Caucasian-American man himself, pressured the moderators to delete blatantly racist threads initiated by White gay men, the moderators resisted and ignored him.

One Australian moderator even responded on one of the racist threads bashing Japanese & other Asian men that "This is a porn board, not a place for political correctness." That particular thread was so insulting to Asian men, but none of the moderators, who are Caucasian, seemed to care and never took action to delete it.

In fact, that racist thread was intentionally placed in the Ethnic Section by an American moderator who claimed that he had to "clean the thread up" before he moved it to the Ethnic Section. Any reasonably educated, civilized human being would be outraged by the blatant racist propaganda promoted by gay/bi White American men on JUB as well as other gay websites.

Gay White American men are also responsible for spreading much of the racist, hateful propaganda on YouTube. In fact, White gay/bi American men are, in large part, responsible for promoting & spreading hateful, racist propaganda against Asian & Black men, primarily Asian men, throughout the internet.

Our organization is very aware of this fact and have unlimited, documented evidence of such blatant racism. I, personally, even confronted such a White gay American man on YouTube who was insulting Asian men. What's so menacing about these White American gay men is that they're so obvious and unapologetic in promoting such racism and hate.

No, absolutely not! Gay bashing should NOT be considered a hate crime when it involves a Caucasian gay or bisexual American man. It's a HUGE insult and slap in the face to men of color that the predominant Caucasian gay community would even have the audacity to request that gay bashing in itself be placed on the same level as racially based hate crimes. The predominant White gay community is guilty as sin of racist bashing of Asian & Black men itself.

We continue to monitor all gay websites, porn or otherwise, and collect increasing evidence of blatant racism by White gay/bi American men. The so called gay "community" in America appears to be nothing more than another racist, good ole boy organization, incredibly asking mainstream society for "special protection" of which it most definitely is NOT deserving.
