McCarren Park Pool update | Free shows, capacity, stuff

1) According to JellyNYC, the capacity of McCarren Park Pool is 5000+.
2) Bloc Party, Secret Machines & MEW is sold out.
3) Supposedly the fan-club Bloc Party show at Irving Plaza is going to happen.
4) McCarren Park Pool is controversial. (I was also BCC'd on the email Gothamist posted)
4) "JELLYNYC™ is proud to (officially) announce our summer 2006 Brooklyn concert series, Pool Parties. We will be hosting FREE outdoor concerts every Sunday afternoon from July 9th to September 3rd in one of the most amazing venues to every grace the city, The Pool in Williamsburg, Brooklyn’s McCarren Park. Pool Parties is a celebration of summer, of music, and of the community itself, and like any good pool party, we will have amazing bands, DJs, food, drinks, and even slip ‘n slides for a day that is sure to make the most jaded hipster smile."
"Bands like Deerhoof, Of Montreal, The Walkmen, Les Savy Fav, Enon, Apollo Sunshine, Beirut, Dr. Dog, Human Television, Silversun Pickups, The Harlem Shakes, Elvis Perkins, and many more exciting surprise names that are soon to be announced, are all on board…plus expect the best of the best DJs rockin out on the wheels of steel from The Rub to Questlove."
------
Silversun Pickups is a nice surprise - that's the first mention I've heard of them coming to this coast any time soon. Beirut for free to 5000 people should be interesting, interesting like Joanna Newsom to 5000 people - interesting, but good (by the way Joanna - please book another show while you're here). Don't forget Beirut has a lot of not-free more intimate shows coming up too. And don't forget Sonic Youth has two not-free shows at the Pool too.

and here's more of the JellyNYC press release that I didn't put in the post:
"Our goals are to raise awareness of The McCarren Park Pool as a cultural venue for NYC, to generate dollars to aid in the restoration of the facility as one of Brooklyn’s premier cultural icons, and to provide the music loving audiences of Brooklyn and Manhattan an opportunity to see their favorite bands in one of the most visually stunning and unique locations in all the city.
For this huge undertaking, JELLYNYC™ will be working closely with Sens Production with the goal of turning the once thriving public pool into a community cultural center for all of Brooklyn and the rest of NYC to appreciate. Before summer 2005, The McCarren Park Public Pool located at the intersection of Williamsburg and Greenpoint, Brooklyn, had been closed for over twenty years. The non-for profit company Sens Production, reopened the space to rave reviews from both the community and press for their unique Agora dance performances. We are so excited to be considered part of their team in the effort to restore The Pool to a place where all facets of the arts can be appreciated."

I am glad to see that the Silversun Pickups are going to be playing here, but how are they going to fill a venue that holds 5000 people.
Posted by danfun | June 12, 2006 1:52 PM
i'm beginning to get the impression that they might not fill in the pool with water.
screw it. i'm still wearing arm floaties.

I live in Greenpoint and I blogged about this last month. http://superspecialness.blogspot.com/2006/05/live-nations-cannonball-pool-becomes.html
Not to be a total hater, but to be a slight hater (for my own personal reasons) how exactly would Todd P curating the shows make it necessary more local and about the neighborhood. Last time I checked, dude was from Texas, and a lot of the white hipsters he has play aren't from Brooklyn either. Again I'm not trying to be a total hater cause he does throw good shows, but I'm just sayin'....
What about the Italian, Latino, Polish, and Carribean communities that inhabit Greenpoint? Why don't they get any say?

Finally hipsters will take a bath.

god! could these comments get any cheesier?? i think every possible swimming pool joke has been used, and when that ran its course, leave it to M.C. to top it all off with the worst joke of the thread.
