Posted by Pete | June 22, 2006 5:30 PM

these people should move to staten islands north shore - affordable housing and you can walk to the ferry for the best transportation in town when you miss the smell of manhattan's piss laden doorways

Posted by Cory | June 22, 2006 7:56 PM

Philly and NYC are both cool, I live in Philly and it is 1000x more affordable and there is tons going on. There are a lot less shows than NYC of course tho

Philadelphia has always played a strong socio-political role in the history of the United States, but right now it's struggling to maintain its relevance. I suppose by appealing to a) common sense and b) people's wallets, they're advertising for their hometown in the most American way possible. Every word that these ads say is the 100% truth. People move to New York because it's "New York." But what happens when the things that make the city so great are no longer available to those who'll utilize them the most?
One of two things are gonna happen.
1. People will move further and further out into other boroughs (South Bronx, further east into Brooklyn and Queens)
2. Just like how there was an exodus from the San Francisco skate scene, people will just pick up and colonize someplace else.

Posted by K | June 22, 2006 11:24 PM

i'm moving to philly because Clap Your Hands Say Yeah are from philly

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2006 12:01 AM

Everybody who likes these ads should move to Philadelphia. This will make New York a better place to live.

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2006 12:03 AM

note: These are not real ads from Philadelphia. They're from NY art students.

Posted by ando | June 23, 2006 1:07 AM

philadelphia is the new baltimore...an east coast town that has lost all relevance to today's society.

that being said, nyc needs a massive purging of its youth.

Feck,
You do realize that the majority of people who live in Brooklyn are not the "overly- contrived, trite, self-congratulatory people" that you mention, right? I'm assuming you have been to Brooklyn. It is actually a very, very small percentage of people that make up Brooklyn. A lot of people move to Brooklyn because they wish to live their lives in a diverse neighborhood, such as mine, which is comprised of Dominicans (largely), Puerto Ricans, Hasidics, African-Americans and whites. It is very rare to find that mix in most neighborhoods in this country. Plus, a lot of people seem to think that hipsters just sort of sprang up in the last five years. Miles Davis was a hipster. John Coltrane was a hipster. Jack Kerouac was a hipster. We could go on, but none of those dudes played indie rock so it doesn't concern you I'm sure.

Didn't The Walkmen move to Philadelphia recently?

Posted by Mark S | June 23, 2006 10:00 AM

y'all be hatin. a coupla reasons to love philly:

1. lotsa BYOB restaurants for you poor art school grads to grab a decent meal

2. they're tryin to make the whole city into one big wi-fi hot spot

3. beanie segal gets shot and taunts his attackers on local tv moments after the shooting

relax, y'all. philly's nice, come by for a visit. we all love new york. we love to come visit you guys. we don't wanna BE new york. that's why we live in philly. everything else is just marketing jibber-jabber.

Posted by cheeezesteak | June 23, 2006 10:06 AM

Coltrane lived in Philadelphia, not New York.
That is all.

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2006 10:08 AM

Attention New Yorkers. Don't move here. You are not wanted. Love Philadelphia.

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2006 10:29 AM

Coltrane did live in NYC - at Manhattan Plaza on 43rd btn 9th and 10th Aves.

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2006 10:31 AM

Funny how NYC residents need to work so hard to tear down other cities. If it keeps the W'burg kidz from moving there, I'm all for perpetuating the idea that Philly sucks.

Also, the idea of 'relevant cities' is hilarious.
"Your city is irrelevant, man, you need to MOVE."

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2006 10:34 AM

There's that word again.

Posted by flashback | June 23, 2006 11:07 AM

Des Moines sucks!

I've never been. But it's not NYC, so it must suck, right? I don't mean to tear any other city down, but I can say your city is sucks in the same way that in high school we used to say stuff like "Fairport Sucks!" Of course, Fairport always had the prettier girls, so secretly we knew it didn't.

Speaking as a resident, I'd like to see them figure out a way to sell young nyc artists on moving to Poughkeepsie. Now that's a challenge.

Posted by fairport alumnus | June 23, 2006 12:06 PM

Posted by nyd_central | June 23, 2006 12:42 PM

(ps - the pitts, penfield, webster, and fairport football all suck;)

Posted by born in the ROC | June 23, 2006 12:49 PM

Right, and when Philly gets too expensive, they can just move further into PA and try to claim that Pittsburgh is the new salvation. And that would be truly hilarious.

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2006 12:52 PM

Rottenchester is a giant garbage plate and Philadelphia had a campaign for people to stop being so fat.

Posted by Anonymous | June 23, 2006 4:27 PM

Will,

if motherfuckers like you keep on moving to brooklyn for all the diversity, there won't be any dominicans, african-americans, and whoever whatever whatever left cause you kicked them all out with mommy and daddy's money....

diversity may sound nice to you, but educating your ass on how to talk and live near colored people costs us a lot

Philadelphia deserves much historical street-cred as far as the birth of America goes....Ben Franklin, the Constitution, Declaration of Independence, Liberty Bell etc etc.

Beyond 18th century history, it has nothing on New York City...nor does any place else.

People in Philly are 100000X more realistic and geniune - which creates for better times. The frequencey of these god times however is much less than NY.

I pay $550 for my share of a three bedroom house where I have a living room in my bedroom, private full bath and my own kitchen. That doesn't include the other kitchen, full bathroom, giant living room, poker room, backyard that can hold 100 people, basement and two other bedrooms.

That being said - I visit NY three times a month as it's a $10 bus ride away

Go to south street for a little bit and go to both Repo Records (between 5th and 6th) and Spaceboy Music (between 7th and 8th), my two fave record stores in the world. Both are phenomenal. And then go to Lorenzo's for lunch on 3rd and South.

Then just like go to Old City and chill, or something. See a show at the First Unitarian (doens't matter what band's playing, just go anyway and see what a fucking awesome venuwe we have). Also keep your eyes peeled for the Toynbee tiles.

Philly is a small intimate version of NYC before MTV destroyed pop culture. It has culture (both high and low), corrupt government, scary neighborhoods right next to chic neighborhoods, history, crappy sports teams and nasty sports fans, a good music scene, affordable housing, and OPPORTUNITY to do something creative with your life without having to eat out of garbage cans.

I highly recommend checking out Philly's huge BYOB scene. It's a great experience to have an incredible meal without having to spend $100 on the wine. It's possible to actually take a date out for a great dinner and pay under $100 for both of you.

If you're tired of being a nobody in NYC, you might just be a somebody in Philly.

my 2 cents.

I moved from Philly to Brooklyn 7 months ago.

Things I miss:

Small neighborhood feeling where it's easy to get to know your neighbors.
Large apartment for the rent.
1/2 price drink night at the Abbaye (.75 PBR's)
Lawn chair drive-in movies during the summer.
Seeing the same music acts as NY only in venues half the size, costing only a fraction of what it does here.

Things I don't miss:

Bars closing at 2.
Trains stop running at 12.
Taxis cost about triple to go the same distance as NYC's.
High risk of getting mugged by a teenager on a BMX in broad daylight.
Fat ugly Philly women.
Lorenzo's.

philadeplhia COULD be a great city. but nobody there gives a shit. so its a rundown shithole. is there a single block you can walk down without seeing a homeless person? its called: get your act together, pretend to care, or see you later. sure its cheaper than nyc, so is everywhere not as good. nyc has something for everybody, you will literally never run out of stuff to do. philadelphia has:

Ritz Theatres
Tequilas - best restaurant on planet earth
Khyber

and thats about it.

Posted by Cory | July 13, 2006 11:18 PM

The fact is that NY is no longer what it was... and it's priced itself out of the market for anyone but tourists. An Apt. in the EV is a million bucks! I lived in the East Village and had a store in Soho until they raised my rent in my shop from 4000 to 13000 if I wanted to renew my lease.

So I moved and moved again and then moved to Philadelphia two years ago. Philly is so not trying to be NYC. It is it's own place and has long dealt with being in NYC's shadow- now the distance not what it was in the 1750s. Philly has 1.5 million to Manhattan's eight. There is no reason to try to compete with that. But what does it mean to 'compete'. Live what you love. It has little to do with what anyone else thinks.

For ME... The thing about my life in Manhattan that I loved then and the thing about Philadelphia that I love now is that I live and work and party and dance without taking a commute either by car or waiting for a subway to take me back to Queens or Park Slope- I live within a human distance- which is always walkable and more easily bikable or a short subway or bus or cab. ... Also- it's funny to hear people talking about NYC and living in Brooklyn or Queens. There was a time not so long ago that people wouldn't move to Brooklyn. Brooklyn was only a place to move because it was cheap- had it not been for its cheapness it would still be a dive. It has since blossumed and now is a nicer place to be and the good thing to see is how its cultural institutions have thrived again like BAM et al.

So to act as if now it's chic to live in Brooklyn (as if it's always been)... well hey- that's just silly. It's fucking Brooklyn- as any native would readily tell you.

As for Phabulous Philly it is the most walkable/ bikable city in the country- the architecture is fucking sublime and now that a nice critical mass of re-investment has happened and creative folks and lots of kids have moved in - it's totally vibrant and cool to live here.

ABOVE all we don't want millions of newbies to flood in and turn the city into something unaffordable or uber-cool. We want growth but not crazy growth- development but human-scale development. Philly is cool enough, big enough, easy enough. We don't need much more. So stay in NYC or move to Phucking Phoenix or any other faux-city sprawled out suburbanopolis.

All of this said, I really appreciate any urban space with density of people, mass transit systems and community where you can do it all in a neighborhood or group of neighborhoods. New York City has that still- (Manhattan had that but is now more of a mall than a place to live)-and is still an amazing place to be.

Philadelphia has enough of it to make it a good place for me to live and work and study. My life is affordable and cool- (and I was able to buy a 1500 sq.ft. 3 story brick 1840s town house with two working fireplaces just north of Chinatown for 225,000- Stick that in your pipe and smoke it!)

East coast American cities have much more in common with European and Canadian cities. They are real cities, dense- with a common center and a coherent connection to the others who also call it home. America doesn't make cities like Philadelphia or New York or Boston or Baltimore or DC for that matter. They can't. We should appreciate what we have in common. We love cities and the vibrant life such real dense Eastern Cities can offer.

If NY is so great why do i see so many NY license plates driving around in Philly??? There are alot of tourists or is it because New Yorkers want to get out of a sespool of 8 million people living like a bunch of animals with nothing else to do except look at bright lights on tall buildings. Even Trump is moving to Philly!!! Philly Rocks

Posted by W.C. Fields | September 19, 2006 12:16 AM

I bet most people that claim NYC is better are not even natives. I'll tell you one thing, NYC was much better before all you hipsters moved in.

Philly's cheap, that's about it. Get a better paying job and stay in NY. By the way, good luck finding a job if you move to this shithole.

Does anyone move to NY thinking it's cheap? Like, they move here and then think, "Oh fuck! This city's expensive! I had no idea!" Philly's population has been steadily decreasing for years. There's a reason for that. I think it's because you can't buy alcohol anywhere except for liquor stores and bars. I'm talking beer/wine - nothing, really irritating. And no good Korean food. But there's probably many other reasons. Think on it.

It sounds like NYC is an oversized bully to a little kid that doesn't care.

I've lived in Philadelphia for most of my life. The envy truly was there...about 10/15 years ago. For a long time, Philadelphia was in New York's shadow. But something changed (and this is the honest truth). Philadlephia isn't thinking about New York. it's thinking about Philadelphia.

This ad campaign came from NEW YORK.

Philly's buildings don't blow up.

Philadelphia +1

I was born in NYC, raised here, and have lived here my whole life.

This fucking place sucks.

It's a playground for the rich - old rich in Midtown, and young rich Downtown.

That's right, I'm talking about YOU. You fucking trust-fund babies who are all too happy to spend Daddy's money on million-dollar luxury "artists lofts" and four dollar no-foam lattes. You're the ones who make landlords feel justified in charging what they do to live here, the ones who make it okay that you can't go out without a hundred bucks in your pocket, even on a Monday night.

Twenty years ago this city was still worth living in. Now we're a 24 hour hard target, and this city is not worth dying in. Not quickly in a bright hot flash, or slowly as we work our asses off just to make ends meet - all for the "privilege" of a 212 area code.

NYC is dead. Hate all you want - the ad campaign is spot on. Keep scuffing up your Chuck Taylors, and polish up your studded belt. I hear LCD Soundsystem is coming to Studio B this weekend...

Phili and NYC BOTH suck. Everyone who complains about money should just shut the fuck up and move to Pittsburgh; it's cheap as hell. Everyone who complains about lack of shittiness should just shut the fuck up and move to Pittsburgh; it's plenty shitty here.

assholes.

Philthy blows. The suburbs are full of rednecks, except the main line which is full of people who wish Philly either A New York, or B Non existant. Everywhere outside of Center City and University city within the city is full of 'gangsters' too busy killing each other to realize it isn't the 90s anymore and jean shorts suck. Center City is full of college kids and tourists. Half of it is parking lot for contrived restaurants and tourist traps. About the only good thing it has going for it is a cheesesteak, a sandwich for godsake...

Everywhere I go, invariably some old dude tells me how great philly was before integration and a redneck hits me up for change. The week nights couldn't be quieter unless I were in Iowa. Weekend nights are filled with the sound of trash from the country side beating each other up over taxis, because there are so few.

Why don't you spoiled Williamsburg kids just move to Bed Stuy or to the south Bronx... cheaper rents and the same sort of can't go out past 3am because you will get shot feeling you can have in philly.

Philly.
Chinatown is a 4 block joke. The only decent ethnic food is in the Northeast or up by Cheltenham Ave (for Korean) or Washington street (Viet). All inaccessible except by bus or car.
Little India in west philly is literally a convenience store next to a 7-11.
If you park in someones "space" they will smash your car windows.
Buildings outside of center city are, largely, falling down. News people, and politicians, use it as a step stoning to bigger and better places.
Honestly, Philly is a tertiary market for everything. It is worthless... unless you have four teeth and a gat.
BTW Philly has been 'picking up' and 'gentrifying' for the last twenty years.
Good luck to all you amatuer artists moving to philly because obviously you suck so bad you can't find any takers in NYC. I have lived in philly far too long, I can't wait to leave. I heare cleveland is nicer

PHILLY IS FOR RICH, WHINY WHITE PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!

As a Midwesterner who moved to Philadelphia, two years after getting a degree from a prestigious university, I moved to your town.

It was one of the worst mistakes I ever made.

There are no jobs, people there are RUDE and suck,
you live with rodents, there are no jobs, it smells, the mayor is a crook, crime, you live with rodents,
women there are bitches, no decent jobs that pay over $10 an hour!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i like nyc, i like philly, my only problem is new yorkers thinkin they are the center of the universe. nyc is not the only greatest place to live, you got to many people for when you need some solitude, and no one talks to eachother for when you need some humanity. but in nyc you have culture, art, and can kind find just about any damn thing you need. every city has it ups and downs. philly's homicide is through the roof, and it's dirty. but philly has heart, roots and culture too. so just be happy with your at, stop commenting on where you don't live, and if you hate where you do live then get up and move. and basically just stop complaining!

Philadelphia is a fucking cesspool of transient kids and their parents money. Fuck Philadelphia! The murder rate is atrocious and the drugs suck as well. Who wants to move to that dump?

Hi- I am moving to philly after living in NYC for 7 years. I got transferred for work and am hoping to go back to school...something i can't seem to afford to do in new york. i love new york and am sad to leave, but i have been priced out, so a transfer is probably just what i need. anyway, i want to know where to live...what areas are cool? diverse? I would love to be able to meet some cool people and live somewhere where i don't need a car. any suggestions from those of you who like philly would be greatly appreciated...thanks!

all these pretentious New Yorkers...your city MUST be the center of the universe.

Congratulations on your move to a city at perhaps its most uninteresting and unfulfilling time in modern history.

…but, hey…I hear there’s a sale on trucker hats and skinny jeans in Williamsburg. Pfff!!!

get grimey in Philadelphia.

Philly rules, New York rules, let's all play nice.

Mom, what do you mean you won't loan $250 a month so I can practice my noise making in some dingy space. Waaaa! But Mom, I want to be a musician and live in Brooklyn like everyone else. Waaa!

Face it. Brooklyn is over. There is nothing original about it any more. When everyone else looks like you, sounds like you, and lives where you live...you.are.nothing

I think philly is actually a pretty poor area. It actually sucks really bad. People grow up here, go to college, come back, and die here. Nobody ever leaves. So if you move here for a job, or something and need to live down town for that purpose, good luck making friends. everyone already has all the friends they need because they grew up with them. They flock in cliques and think they are the best thing walking the streets. Have fun staying here and never seeing the world philly!!! the city doesn't like change, and neither do the poeople. which is why this city will continue to suck.

Posted by someone | May 13, 2008 10:58 PM

I am sorry for all the people who really have to fight on here about what city is nicer to live in. It is a place, nothing more, nothing less. Live where you love, love where you live. Don't worry so much about other people or other places.

To think all this nonsense because of some people's advertising project. Thats all it was, just a SCHOOL PROJECT!!

I am neither from Philly or NY. I live in a small town in New york State, about 1 and 1/2s from NYC and about 2 1/2s from philly, but I have been to both. Niether place is better than the other because all it is is land and people and buildings.

Peace \/
