DonnasOn May 19, the following was posted on The Donnas' public message board:

We would like to officially announce that we have parted ways with Atlantic Records. The decision was entirely mutual and completely amicable and will not impact the band, nor will it impact upon the writing, recording or touring for the next Donnas album.

We want to thank you for all your support over the years and hope that you will continue to support us during this time of transition. As soon as we know where we're going to land next, we'll let you all know!

Love,
The Donnas

That post is probably going to get a lot of "who cares" comments, but before they pop up...can I just say that I think the guitarist in that band totally kicks ass?

Posted by KD | June 11, 2006 9:26 PM

it seems like just last week they were djing in madrid... where does the time go?

Posted by cat dirt | June 11, 2006 11:14 PM

"The decision was entirely mutual"? I don't believe it, unless they negotiated a buyout á là Mariah Carey and Virgin (but not that big, obviously).

"nor will it impact upon the... recording... [of] the next Donnas album." And monkeys might fly out of my butt.

Cat Dirt: I wonder if their subsequent trip to London and Madrid was a gift from Molly Neuman (one of their managers) to try to cheer them up.

Wow, Greg really needs to get over it.

Posted by oreo | June 12, 2006 9:13 PM

Yeah, I do need to get over it ("it" being getting wronged by the moderators of the message boards). But I could be in worse shape. I could be holding a grudge so big that I'd be jumping up and down with joy after hearing the news that The Donnas have lost their recording contract. But I'm not.

And you are... ? If you're a Donnas fan making your first visit to Brooklyn Vegan's blog, I see it didn't take one of you guys long to find this entry. And if you are a Donnas fan, why didn't you say anything in response to the comment by PandasinmyPants?

Posted by Recovering Donnaholic | June 13, 2006 12:20 AM

Well you seem to know everthing...Who am I? Tell me. You keep saying you were wronged...so what? Everyone has been wronged in there day. Your coming down(detoxing) from a nasty obsession.

GET OVER IT.

The Donnas were good?

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2006 9:54 AM

I haven't a clue who you are, whoreo. In fact, I wasn't sure you weren't just a regular visitor to this blog who clicked on the link to my MySpace profile and browsed it for a couple of minutes, until you posted that second comment. For all I know, you could be one of The Donnas themselves.

"Detoxing" is an appropriate metaphor. Hence the moniker I use when I make a comment about, or referencing, The Donnas on this blog. (You are sharp enough to get the pun, aren't you?) Anyway, I'm far from unique in being or having been obsessed with The Donnas. I wonder how many albums and concert tickets they would have sold if a good portion of their fans weren't obsessed. (Not that I'm knocking their music -- I wouldn't have been a fan of thiers if I didn't like it.)

BV, if you'd like me to stop using this blog entry for this debate, just say the word.

What are you trying to prove?
Your using "secrets" that you know about the band and certain people too reel people in. It's a cry for attention.

I wonder how many concert tickets the Donnas sold altogether. I remember enjoying them way in the beginning, then around the time of "Rock n Roll Machine" and Jawbreaker I think they peaked. Everything afterward was quite the job of their managers. On their own, they never really got any bigger than filling maybe a little more than half of Irving Plaza; the only time they ever played bigger places was when there was a corporate sponsor.

I watched their major label career closely to see if they would finally put the Go Gos and Bangles in the old folks home. Well, maybe Susannah Hoffs has been quite of late but the Go Gos are still touring and selling out theaters. What went wrong?

Posted by PandasinmyPants | June 14, 2006 7:03 AM

I don't know about the Bangles, but Susanna Hoffs collaborated with Matthew Sweet on an album of cover songs that came out two months ago:
http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:qeanqj6rojaa

It's far too early to write the Donnas' obituary.

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2006 6:54 PM

I love Susannah but I missed that covers album; I remember a story Maria McKee told me about her auditioning for the Bangles - she went after she saw flyers around LA saying that one of their influences was Arthur Lee's Love, and then she told them that Bryan McLean was her half-brother.

It's been ten years with the Donnas already - I think the obituary was written when they bored the pants off their audience at TRL.

Posted by PandasinmyPants | June 16, 2006 2:25 PM

You're saying that Maria McKee told you that the Bangles wouldn't let her into the group because she was Bryan McLean's half-sister?

It's been nine years since the Donnas' self-titled album was first released. Assuming for the sake of argument that they did bore the pants off TRL's audience, so what? The approval of TRL's audience isn't a requirement for a recording artist to achieve success (thank God).

Posted by Anonymous | June 16, 2006 9:57 PM

Re Maria McKee story - No, she never said they didn't want her in the band. I'm sure they did! They were blown away when she told them she was related to Bryan. I don't remember more of the details, she told me the story late one night many years ago and I thought it was funny.

Re TRL - I understand what you're saying; the approval of the audience isn't a requirement but the mere appearance on TRL can guarantee immense record sales afterward. Why would the Donnas have even gone on that show unless they were vying for the teeny bopper audience that made Good Charlotte zillionaires? They were boring on the show and their major label records were boring, and I think the record buying audience noticed that and not much happened after that appearance. If the records were good and the shows exciting don't you think word of mouth alone (and not just support from the obssessed fans) would have guaranteed their success?

Posted by PandasinmyPants | June 17, 2006 11:46 AM

I think the word 'vying' is a little loaded. To me, it implies that they actively tried to court the favor of the audience. I'm of the opinion that when they appeared on TRL, they were just themselves and played just the style of music that they wanted to. In other words, they didn't sell out to TRL's audience (nor to Atlantic). They appeared on TRL only to expose more fans of pop/rock music to their music.

An artist's records can be good and his/her/their performances exciting (as judged by a sizable subset of music fans), yet that artist may nonetheless not achieve financial success. Brooklyn Vegan blogs about many such artists. I don't buy your assertion that (further) financial success (I say "further" because they couldn't have gone on this long without having achieved some financial success) was theirs for the taking but they fumbled it away.

Posted by Anonymous | June 17, 2006 12:36 PM

I like your arguments and agree with them. However, from my experience, having seen the group since their inception, The Donnas have been a cute little gimmick from the beginning - Wow, they're the female Ramones! Look at the little girls playing their instruments!! Wow, they're signed to a major! They're going to be huge. :-{ Their sound changed for the somewhat better after Atlantic shelled out for a producer, but it was evident that they weren't decent musicians to begin with, just trained monkeys doing what they're told after they started getting a lot of money. I doubt they made back what's been spent on them.

In the end, in this day, an all female band (aside from bands like Antigone Rising) is still a novelty; the Donnas did nothing to change that. If a band that happens to be all female is going to be as huge as the GoGos and Bangles were in their day (and in this day it's going to be a very big deal) I hope they were to be good, natural musicians that write their own music (I've heard that there was a man behind the curtain the whole time) and will be worthy of loads of coverage on great blogs like BrooklynVegan. I adore visiting here to read about and hear interesting music by musicians that aren't gimmicks and are pushing the boundaries of music as we know it.

Posted by PandasinmyPants | June 18, 2006 3:39 PM

"In the end, in this day, an all female band (aside from bands like Antigone Rising) is still a novelty; the Donnas did nothing to change that."

Reading my own posts after I posted them is embarassing! I meant to say that in this day, an all female band is still perceived as a novelty. I know they were a concoction by a male manager as well, but I'd rather see another Runaways than Josie and the Pussycats.

And my nerve is my best quality. :-)

Hey, I've been busy so I've been unable to comment here for awhile until now...

"Are you Greg undercover? He would pull shit like that on the message boards by using bogus accounts to throw people off."

Fuck you, that's not true. I did have a few secondary usernames (Triumph [the Insult Comic Dog], Bernie Williams, and one other that I used only once and have forgotten) that I used occasionally to have fun or when the thread subject called for that "persona," but I never tried to conceal myself behind them. The moderators knew I was the one behind those usernames. (They banned those as well as my primary one.) So did other members of the message board community who had been around for a long time.

I have been the one responding here to PandasinmyPants without using a name, but that was because I didn't want to give further evidence that I'm still obsessed, to a degree, with The Donnas. Note that I've been defending The Donnas in those comments.

Once again, fuck you, No Tengo Cojones.

The Donnas speak (sort of) regarding this so-called parting of ways — from http://www.sfbayguardian.com/entry.php?entry_id=2916&catid=107 :
"'A lot of people think we've gotten dropped and we owe [Atlantic] thousands of dollars and we can't pay them back!' Robertson explains... Contrary to conjecture, it turns out that the Donnas weren't dropped from Atlantic but left amicably, deciding not to renew in the face of pressure to go more pop..."

So their recording contract ran out and The Donnas chose not to sign again with Atlantic on the conditions Atlantic stipulated. Atlantic still wanted The Donnas, but not their 'sound'. What did Atlantic see in them, then? Their gender? Their looks? That's not exactly a feather in your cap, ladies.

Posted by Recovering Donnaholic | February 23, 2007 9:26 AM

Posted by another Recovering Donnaholic | March 17, 2007 6:37 AM

After thinking about this some more, I'm calling "bullshit" on The Donnas. They claim their deal with Atlantic ran its course after just two albums?! Also, Atlantic continued to host their public message board at http://boards.atlanticrecords.com/artists/thedonnas after this "parting of ways" happened, up until the end of this past January (with a placeholder Web page, now gone, for several weeks after that). Considering their first Atlantic album was recorded and released in 2002, their deal apparently ran for five years. I picture an exchange along the lines of this:

The Donnas: Hey, Atlantic, we've been ready to record our third album for you guys for a few months now...
Atlantic: Uh, yeah... Well, sales of your second album didn't get the boost from your winter Olympics promo that we anticipated. We're eager to work with you again, but we have some ideas of our own about how your sound might evovle...
The Donnas: No dice. Our managers carefully negotiated our deal with you; you can't dictate our sound!
Atlantic: We won't finance a third album otherwise.
The Donnas: So the remaining album(s) in our deal...?
Atlantic: Don't worry about it (them), we won't force you to record it (them) for us.
The Donnas: Yeah, but what about the stuff you owe us under the terms of our deal? You're not going to punt our message boards before the deal expires.
Atlantic: Very well, we'll continue to host your message boards through the end of the contract.

My goodness, too many people are able to criticize how there are better girl bands and the Go-Go's and Bangles are better. You should just take the band as they are, they are NOT the Go-Go's or The Bangles, they are much more raw and punk then either of those bands could be. I have been seeing the Go-Go's and the Bangles since the beginning when their days playing little clubs in Hollywood these are legendary bands no doubt. But The Donna's are The Donna's and should not be compared to others. In addition, the wise person who said there are better girl bands, where are they? Not signed to a big label and there are many bands who suck and are popular. I guess until you all get a record deal, shut you mouth, no body tells you to listen. You can get back to listening to pop music and leave the cool bands to us.
