BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE @ PROSPECT PARK | JULY 6, 2006
Broken Social Scene @ Prospect Park

The high ticket price definitely kept people away from this one. Unlike the free TV on the Radio show a week earlier, you could barely tell there was a show going on as you walked up to the park. The gate around the venue deters most people from listening on the outside, and inside was probably only 1/3 full - about as many people that can fit in the seated area. That's still a lot of people, but a lot less than the place can hold. Feist, Emily Haines, and Jason Collett were absent. Stars' Amy Millan played head female vocalist.

Broken Social Scene @ Prospect Park

Broken Social Scene @ Prospect Park

I think I've seen BSS too many times (yes, "wah", I know). I love them, but this show didn't add anything to the collective experience. I've heard Kevin Drew dedicate a song to the people who were at their first NYC show (at Northsix) more than once. The stage antics and songs all felt too familiar. Hearing music in the park is always a plus though. Maybe I should have checked out Mates of State instead.

"For the first time in over a year, Sufjan Stevens is going on tour, bringing with him a talented group of musicians and friends including a small string ensemble and brass section. They will perform a repertoire of familiar songs from Seven Swans, Michigan and Illinois in a new symphonic context. The tour will bring Sufjan and his ensemble to some of the country’s finest theaters, including Nashville’s esteemed Ryman and Los Angeles’ historic Wiltern."

All dates below....

* all shows with My Brightest Diamond

Supporting the tour will be My Brightest Diamond, a moniker for the talented singer-songwriter Shara Worden. Shara has toured extensively in Sufjan’s band, appears on his recordings, and is often his right-hand woman. Shara is also a close friend, creative peer and Brooklyn neighbor to Sufjan.
The pomp and pageantry of the previous Illinoismakers tour will be augmented by a nuance, mastery and sophistication of talented new players. But don’t expect to see any cheerleading uniforms or routines. Suit coats, neckties and corsages might be more appropriate; but we aren’t about to issue a dress code.
Sufjan would also like to take this opportunity on tour to debut you a few new pieces.

(thx all)

CBGB most likely moving to Vegas | Hilly has lung cancer

HILLY KRISTAL
Hilly Kristal

CBGB Dog"I have been looking for space in New York and the rent's $125,000 a month on Broadway." He said he came close to securing a space downtown on Essex Street, but the deal didn't make it past the negotiations phase. So, it's "Viva Las Vegas" for one of New York's most revered rock and roll attractions.....

"[The Vegas CBGB] won't be the same size or the same shape, but I am going to have all the things that matter there," Kristal said. "I am taking the bars with me, I am taking the stage — I'm taking the urinal that Joey [Ramone] pissed in with me. I'm going to take a lot of things — anything that makes this place CBGB.....

.....But financial worries and his club's impending move aren't Kristal's biggest concerns at the moment: Three weeks ago, he learned that he has lung cancer, and he's been enduring chemotherapy treatments ever since. [MTV NEWS]

Bonnaroo 2006

"Since Bonnaroo’s initial artist announcement, all eyes have been on Radiohead, perhaps England’s most important export since Pink Floyd. Offering a well-balanced mix of classic anthems (“No Surprises”) and material from its forthcoming solo project (“Body Snatchers”) Radiohead turned the weekend’s intense performance, opening with Hail to the Thief’s “There There” and closing its proper set with its signature ballad, “Karma Police.” In certain ways, Tom Petty and Radiohead are a study in contrasts. One is the embodiment of summertime idealism, the other industrial realism. Petty speaks in broad guitar strokes, Radiohead minimalist paranoia and synthesized beats. Yet, both acts produce equally anthemic music, seemingly designed for a festival of Bonnaroo’s magnitude." [Jambands.com]

Belle & Sebastian played in Battery Park

I couldn't get a ticket. Luckily Jerry Yeti was there. He wrote this post....

Belle & Sebastian @ Battery ParkBelle & Sebastian @ Battery Park

"Maybe I'll read off the sponsors again" the MC joked to the audience yesterday as the rain died off and Belle & Sebastian were about to take the stage. He didn't, but he did quiz us on the founding sponsor of the River to River Festival. Hint: it has the word "American" in it and it's not American Apparel.

As we waited following Martha Wainwright, the venue played Neko Case's "Fox Confessor Brings the Flood" and I began to have horrible – and yet wonderful- memories of Sasquatch and the weather that once silenced Neko. Would it also silence Belle & Sebastian? Indeed, the rain came as expected but then fled like a bunch of Loyalists and Redcoats, retreating from the fort at the Southwest Battery. When all was clear, Stuart Murdoch led us triumphantly through a pop-filled afternoon. Murdoch's a fan of banter, and there were plenty of remarks made about them deciding whether to recognize our independence after all these 230 years. Scotland has always been a bully like that. The band was puzzled why we booked a Scottish band to play our Independence Day. Murdoch suggested that perhaps it's because they're an Indie band. Or as I could imagine AA Milne writing:

"Oh Piglet," said Pooh. "I forgot. It's Indiebandance Day!"

The multitude of band members –plus a couple sitting in from the Battery Park Philharmonic or something- filled the multifaceted sound quit nicely. I always found Murdoch's voice alluringly weak, like that kid in every movie who has never sang a note in his life and suddenly there he is up on stage singing for the first time… and it's marvelous. Untrained, but imperfectly perfect. "Lord Anthony" could be that kid, and it was easily my favorite song of the day.

I didn't pay close attention for the entirety of the nearly two hours they played. Twenty minutes into the performance, I was distracted by a sea of incoming messages, reading "goal goal goal!!!" and from another friend, "Gooooooooooooal!!!" This was followed by a second deluge of messages a minute later as Italy scored its second goal over Germany in two minutes… all in the final seconds of tripleteenth overtime.

This may not mean much for our country, but may I remind you that USA tied Italy with only 9 players? So in a roundabout way, it was a good moment to be an American.

-------

And I'll add this bit from Gothamist: "Masters at working the crowd, the band had the audience hanging on every word, lyric, sound and move. One fan was brought up on stage, one asked to apply mascara on singer Stuart Murdoch and one taking the mic to help sing. Murdoch also addressed the whole ticket issue, not mentioning that coffee shop by name, saying if they had known they would have surely done something about it."

MORE B&S TOUR DATES

Elvis Perkins in Dearland @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC | pics

DOWNLOAD: Ash Wednesday (MP3) (more)

I'm warming up to Elvis Perkins. I still haven't listened to the album that Jerry says is one the best of the year, and I wasn't as blown away by his live show as much as others I know, but maybe I just wasn't in the mood Saturday night (July 1, 2006) for that, as MOKB puts it, "soothing, warming, yet heartwrenching brand of folk pop/rock".

Elvis Perkins @ Bowery Ballroom

Notes:
1) He sounds just like John Darnielle at (a lot of) times.
2) He's good at playing guitar, harmonica, and singing all at the same time - like Dylan, like Ounsworth.
3) His brother Oz Perkins played Dorky David Kidney in Legally Blonde.
4) Parts of one of his songs sound like a song in Dirty Dancing.
5) His dad is Anthony.
6) Upright bass and big drums are fun.
7) There were more people at the show for Elvis Perkins than for Matt Costa who was headlining (I left too).
8) Any day now we'll find out which label is putting out Elvis' record.

Openers The Little Ones were great. They're ultimately what got me to this show, but that's for another post...
