Movies | Rockin' Brooklyn AND Kill Your Idols

Two new music movies...

ROCKIN' BROOKLYN
"Rockin' Brooklyn in documentary style will explore the music scene and most importantly the life of the musicians: their inspirations, dreams and aspirations in Brooklyn, New York. What drives them to have a band? What does it mean? Does Brooklyn somehow influence their music? Is there a music scene? This film together with new voices in music will provide insight into these questions."

KILL YOUR IDOLS
"For two-thirds of its brief length, Scott Crary's Kill Your Idols is content to competently survey the past three decades of downtown avant-rock, from Suicide and the No Wave explosion through Sonic Youth and the Swans all the way up to contemporary bands like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the Liars." [Village Voice]

Kill Your Idols is playing at Cinema Village in NYC. Stay tuned for Rockin' Brooklyn showing details.

Songwriter-turned-attorney Michael Gardner fights the law

Organge County Weekly: Pop quiz: my buddy samples a juicy lick from the new Strokes album—just a few seconds’ worth of guitar—slows it down, loops it, and uses it as the backdrop for some mellow beat-dropping at the local open mic. Ryan Gentles—who quit his job booking acts at Mercury Lounge to manage the Strokes—is in the crowd, recognizes the riff, and takes legal action. What can he do?

Michael Gardner: That’s a very technical question in this sense: his damages are approximately zero to three cents, or whatever. In practical terms, you’re not going to see a federal lawsuit out of it. Odds are probably like a lottery that the owner of the intellectual property will ever know. Obviously, if you plan to record something, then things are different.

Yo La Tengo's The Sounds of the Sounds of Science @ Prospect Park, Brooklyn, NYC | pics

"The Sounds of the Sounds of Science features 78 minutes of instrumental music by Yo La Tengo. The CD contains the entire score written and performed by the band to accompany eight legendary but rarely-seen undersea documentary shorts by influential French avant-garde filmmaker Jean Painleve. Yo La Tengo's score, originally debuted on stage at the San Francisco Film Festival in April 2001 with the band providing live accompaniment to the films...." [Yo La Tengo]

Yo La Tengo @ prospect Park

Yo La Tengo recreated the show last night (July 13, 2006) in Prospect Park to a massive Brooklyn crowd. People just seem to come out of the wordwork when the ticket price is FREE. I couldn't even see Yo La Tengo from where I was sitting and my view of the screen was often blocked by the many people constantly walking around (not their fault). Add tons of people talking through the whole thing (their fault), and this show should have been a disaster - but by the second or third song all the distractions faded to the background and I just enjoyed the seemingly perfectly timed "trippy", sometimes exciting, sometimes humorous, live music playing to (often dirty) images of jellyfish, sea horses, shrimp, and octopi. Qbertplaya had a much better seat.

...Brooklyn rents have climbed, and Oneida have watched contemporaries become famous. "More power to them," Bobby says, paying respect to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Animal Collective. "But no major labels have come to knock on our door. And I attribute that to their good business sense."

Chromeo @ 2006 Intonation Festival, Chicago | pics

Nicole Chavas of Radio Free Chicago brings us this review of Chromeo's performance at the 2006 VICE Intonation Festival in Chicago....

Chromeo @ Intonation

Upon first hearing Chromeo's almost over-the-top blend of funky 80s-inspired dance music, I had to wonder if the musicians were serious. Once the Chromeo duo Pee Thug and Dave 1 took the stage, it was obvious there wasn't a trace of irony in the music they were making- they just wanted people to dance.

With Dave 1 on the guitar and Pee Thug rocking the synth and the talk box, the band alternated between tracks from their debut album She's In Control and brand new music from their forthcoming album. Dave 1's sense of humor played front and center throughout the show, emphasizing several times the fact that all their songs are about "girls and dancing," begging the audience to drop the tired rock 'n roll fist in the air routine and get their feet moving instead, even managing to keep the audience interested with his hilarious babble as Pee Thug took a couple minutes fixed a kit drum meltdown. He later rewarded the audience for their patience by thanking them for being so "gangsta" (insert robot-voiced sample here) as they wrapped up with the song of the same name.

Lambchop | 2006 Tour Dates

Lambchop

According to Merge Records, "Lambchop returns with an amazing new studio album called Damaged. A new Lambchop album is always cause for jubilation here at Merge HQ. This marks the ninth release on Merge from this Nashville collective anchored by the enigmatic songwriting of Kurt Wagner. It's true that we are all damaged in one way or another, to some extent - physically, emotionally, psychologically - and this intricately beautiful recording shines a light on the damage that we tend to do to ourselves and to others. An interview with José González

MY INTRO
Dustin Cohen caught up with José González before his second of two shows at NYC's Bowery Ballroom on July 3, 2006 (one day earlier I caught José at Summerstage) . Dustin snapped these pictures and asked Jose a few questions...

Jose GonzalezJose Gonzalez

DUSTIN'S INTRO
Several years ago I received an unexpected package from a good friend who was living in Lund, Sweden. Inside waiting, was the tightest pair of jeans I've ever tried to squeeze into and a José González EP, which was only available in his native country at the time. About two years later, I heard González's rendition of "Heartbeats" by The Knife featured on a Sony Bravia TV commercial (the ad shows 250,000 bouncy balls racing down a San Francisco street, check it out if you haven't seen it, it's truly fantastic) and my interest in his music was rekindled. Since then, Veneer, González's first full-length album has finally been released in the U.S. by Mute Records and he's been playing sold out shows all over the world.

QUICK FACTS
Name: José González
Age: 27
Hometown: Gothenburg, Sweden

BrooklynVegan Dustin: This is the last night of this tour, how did it go?

Jose: Pretty great actually, I really enjoy playing with Juana Molina and Psapp.

BrooklynVegan Dustin: Outside of New York and L.A., have people been very receptive to your music?

Jose: Yeah, I didn't really know many of the cities before. Last Sunday we were in Detroit, which I heard was a hard place to play, but it was really good.

BrooklynVegan Dustin: You recently recorded with Zero 7. Tell me a little about making guest appearances on their new album.

Jose: They just called me and were looking for new vocalists. It was really fun, I was up at Henry Binns's house two times, about 10 days total. And we just hung out; he's a great cook too. They have their studio out there in the countryside.

BrooklynVegan Dustin: You've covered a number of songs (Joy Division, Bruce Springsteen, Kylie Minogue, The Knife). How do you decide you're going to cover a song?

Jose: Many of the times, it's been me searching for something new to play and I've ended up searching songs I've really enjoyed like Joy Division or "Heartbeats" (The Knife). And "Hand on Your Heart," the Kylie Minogue cover, was more of a challenge. I had heard it many times before but this time I was watching the video and really started listening to the lyrics and found the lyrics didn't match the video, the really happy production.

BrooklynVegan Dustin: Can we expect a José González/Kylie Minogue collaboration anytime soon?

Jose: (Laughs) Ahhh no, I don't think so.

BrooklynVegan Dustin: Have any of the artists ever contacted you to tell you they liked or disliked a cover?

Jose: Yeah, just recently I heard that she [Kylie Minogue] heard it and she liked the song. I gave Olof [Dreijer] and Karin [Dreijer Andersson] (the brother and sister duo from The Knife) my version of "Heartbeats" before I released it and they were really pleased. I don't know if Elizabeth Fraser [Cocteau Twins] heard my version, but my record label in the UK got her to write down the lyrics because I couldn't find them anywhere.

BrooklynVegan Dustin: You're also in a band, Junip, how is that different than your solo work?

Jose: Apart from just guitar and vocals, there is one guy playing organ and moog and another one playing drums. It's not as much focused on the guitar picking. On the recording side, it's more dense.

BrooklynVegan Dustin: There's a lot of good music coming out of Sweden right now: Love is All, The Perishers, The Sounds, Shout Out Louds. Are you close to any of these bands?

Jose: Nicholaus Sparding from Love is All, who plays guitar and writes much of their stuff, he's been playing percussion with me. He's the one who told me about Kylie Minogue because they're band signed with the same label. Josephine [Olausson] the singer, she put out my first 7'' on her label in 2000. So there's one 7'' with Junip that she put out and one other.

BrooklynVegan Dustin: What were you doing before you decided music would be your full-time career?

Jose: I was studying Biochemistry.

BrooklynVegan Dustin: That's a pretty big change. Any similarities between Biochemistry and songwriting?

Jose: Umm yeah... Well, no not really (laughs).

BrooklynVegan Dustin: Your parents are originally from Argentina. Growing up in Sweden, did your teachers ever have trouble pronouncing your name?

Jose: Yeah definitely. (Laughs). Swedish people, when they try to pronounce José, they say "sho-see-uh" which is kind of fun.

BrooklynVegan Dustin: Let's pretend Sweden is playing Argentina in the World Cup Finals, who do you root for?

Jose: I would probably go for both, but I'm not that big into soccer. On this tour it was really fun though. On the tour bus we had Juana Molina from Argentina, Psapp from the UK and Germany, and me and my tour manager are from Sweden. There was some good, friendly rivalry.

BrooklynVegan Dustin: I'm a sucker for Jenny Lewis, is there a female musician you adore?

Jose: Yeah, I would say Cat Power.

BrooklynVegan Dustin: She's great, definitely. Your songs "Crosses" and "Stay in the Shade" have been featured on the The O.C. Have you ever seen the show?

Jose: No, I actually haven't seen it yet. I've heard a lot about it and people tell me they've found my music through the show and that's really cool.

BrooklynVegan Dustin: It's a good place to hear small label/independent bands. Do you remember the first album you bought?

Jose: I was just talking about that today. One of the really early memories I have is buying this "Electric Boogie" album. I can't remember the name or where it is, I think I was around 7. I didn't know about music, but me and my brother really looked up to these older kids in our neighborhood who did break-dancing. I had this album that had pictures on the back about how to do different break-dance moves.

BrooklynVegan Dustin: What was the last album you bought?

Jose: I did an in-store at Amoeba Records in Los Angeles and picked up some great classical music from Finland.

BrooklynVegan Dustin: Any interesting tour rituals? Pre-show traditions?

Jose: No, not really. As long as the sound is good, I feel comfortable. And as long as I have one or two glasses of wine or beer I'm fine.

BrooklynVegan Dustin: Takes away the edge. Do you still get nervous before a show?

Jose: It's usually not about being nervous; I just know I'll have a better show if I'm not completely sober.

BrooklynVegan Dustin: Have you ever played a show completely drunk?

Jose: I wouldn't say completely drunk like when you're puking or anything. But on this tour, in Minneapolis, I had too much to drink and my fingers weren't doing what I wanted, they weren't agreeing.

BrooklynVegan Dustin: Finally, do you have a favorite bar or restaurant you like to go to when you're in New York?

Jose: I really like this place called Barrio Chino over on Orchard and Broome. They serve Mexican food and they have Jalapeño margaritas, it's really good.

---

José González heads back out on a European tour later this week followed by nationwide dates with Zero 7 (including two Webster Hall dates in mid-September). Though a few songs have been recorded, due to his heavy touring schedule, a new album isn’t expected until sometime in 2007.

---

Not mentioned in the interview: Jose, Psapp, and Juana did actually collaborate (sort of).

First of last CBGB shows: Angry Samoans "plus More awesome bands to be announced soon"

80's LA punk band Angry Samoans have been playing shows (in California and Florida at least) for the last few years. I'm not sure when the last time they visited CBGB was, but the next time will be September 9, 2006 - 21 days before CBGB closes for good, and with a $25 ticket price I'm thinking the bill will probably start to resemble the classic lineups they set up for the CBGB benefits last year.

Alarm Will Sound, Camille, & Haale playing David Byrne's Perspective Series @ Carnegie Hall - Feb 4

ALARM WILL SOUND
Alarm Will Sound

As previously reported, David Byrne is curating a "Perspectives" series at Carnegie Hall. At least one of the shows (Feb 4, 2007) will feature Alarm Will Sound, Haale and Camille.

David recently attended and wrote about one of Camille's shows at Joe's Pub. Camille is also a member of Nouvelle Vague, a Luaka Bop artist. (Luaka Bop is David's label).

Haale has four new MP3s for download. She's also playing the Spiegeltent on August 8th and Symphony Space on September 15th.

You might know Alarm Will Sound from their CD of classical Aphex Twin covers. They recently performed some of it at the Bang on a Can Festival.

David Byrne is playing a solo set at the Beacon Theatre on August 23rd.

STREAM: I wanna call it love (REAL) (new Sondre Lerche)

"Barnes & Noble's new event series, Upstairs at the Square, mixes writers and musicians for an evening of reading, music, and conversation hosted by journalist Katherine Lanpher at our Union Square store in New York.

On Wednesday, July 19, at 7:00PM, Gary Shteyngart, author of the new bestselling novel, Absurdistan, and singer-songwriter-guitarist-bandleader and Norwegian chart-topper Sondre Lerche, will discuss art – and the art of making it – in America as well as in New York, which both call home. They will read and perform their work."

Stream Thom Yorke's The Eraser & what not

Thom Yorke "Reviews of the Eraser (buy @ Insound) range from a 5.0 @ Slant:

The Eraser is, quite simply, Thom Yorke clearing his throat. In a year where no new Radiohead album looms on the horizon and the scant fistful of scheduled live dates for the band have tickets going for ungodly sums on eBay, it makes sense that Yorke would capitalize on the void. After all, it's not like this is a solo album (as Yorke has vehemently, insistently denied in several places).

up to an A- @ Stylus:

The Eraser is a triumph, and I'm left wondering why I expected otherwise. Maybe it was intended to temper expectations for Radiohead's new era under Spike Stent, but as is, it will always be a stunning final word for one of our generation's most reliably innovative partnerships.

STREAM THE ERASER @ AOL Music. Watch him perform two songs on the Henry Rollins show.

On Sale: Roots & Talib Kweli @ Webster Hall PLUS Talib is playing the Apple Store

TALIB KWELI @ PRATT INSTITUTE | 04/07/06
Talib Kweli @ Pratt

Remember two months ago when I posted Roots tour dates that included an August 14th show at NYC's Webster Hall? Well those tickets are on sale (just not from Bowery Presents) (thx Ben). Talib Kweli is playing the show too. One week from today (July 18, 2006), Talib is playing with Jean Grae for free in the SOHO Apple Store.

The above photo of Talib playing at Pratt was taken by Daniel Parker who also wrote a review of the same show. Read it below....

----

Mix the LES of Manhattan with the G train in Brooklyn and you get: the Pratt Art Institute. It’s a pretty predictable crowd.

So when Talib Kweli dropped by his hometown Friday for a free 50-minute set in an auditorium the size of my cramped apartment, you would think (and
hope) the crowd would go nuts. Hip-hop rewards its fans for their energy.
But clearly the free price tag brought out a lot of tag-alongs that forgot this wasn’t Avenue A.

Kweli is one of the biggest names in hip-hop and has a list of collaborations with De La Soul, Kayne West, DJ Quik, DJ Scratch, Mos Def (of
course) and my most recent favorite, Danger Doom. I don’t care how true your religion jeans are; you can’t just sit still while Kweli turns through high energy after high-energy lyrical bullets.
Kweli ushered in a true-to-its-roots-revival for hip-hop during the late ‘90’s. Black Star, with Hi-Tek and Mos Def, formed an alliance that most thought was the alternative to P. Diddy’s catchy-rap and that entire gangsta motif fill.

Hopefully when he returns next week April 14th for a NYU show, they’ll know that Kweli has got lyrical dexterity worth respect. Go crazy

Syd Barrett RIP

Syd Barrett

Syd Barrett, the troubled Pink Floyd co-founder who spent his last years in reclusive anonymity, has died, the band said Tuesday. He was 60.

A spokeswoman for the band said Barrett died several days ago, but she did not disclose the cause of death. Barrett had suffered from diabetes for years.

The surviving members of Pink Floyd -- David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Roger Waters and Richard Wright -- said they were "very upset and sad to learn of Syd Barrett's death." [Chicago Tribune]

Dude from audience @ BSS in Brooklyn & a Billboard Interview

We've become that band that doesn't really rehearse anymore," Drew told Billboard.com yesterday (July 6), prior to Broken Social Scene's performance in Brooklyn, N.Y.'s, Prospect Park. "We just get together and go tour and play live. We've lost a bit of that thing we had at the beginning where we tried to challenge each other a lot more." [Billboard]

----

Kevin Drew wanted an audience member to hear what it was like to hear the Prospect Park crowd cheer. This guy volunteered and was brought up on stage....

Interviews with Matthew Herbert (when he DJd Canal Room)

"Just two days ago. I had a DJ gig last night at the Canal Room, which I wasn't sure about since I looked on the internet and it said it was one of P. Diddy's favorite hangouts. That made me a bit nervous, but it turned out to be good." [Matthew Herbert to Pitchfork]

"I was over to do press and I was requested to DJ, as well, while I stayed there. I don't really DJ much anymore. I'm sort of finding it too limiting an experience." [Matthew Herbert to Stylus]

"It's difficult coming through America because the fees are so low. We lose money on every show." [Matthew Herbert to Press Pound]

DIY & Indie redefined

"So...indie rock's lost its mystique, is what I'm saying, yeah, but I don't necessarily pine for it, because it's finally truly possible to be DIY, and I think that's great. People will always marvel at success, and now you can succeed on your own terms, which is all anyone ever wanted. " [Chris Ott] (thx Joe)

New Broadway show showcases Bob Dylan songs

"Twyla Tharp took on the music of Billy Joel and created 'Movin' Out,' which ran for more than three years on Broadway. Now the director-choreographer has turned to another pop superstar, Bob Dylan, for her next project 'The Times They Are A-Changin'.' The musical, a coming-of-age story set in a circus, opens Oct. 26 at Broadway's Brooks Atkinson Theatre. Preview performances begin Sept. 25." [Bob Dylan]
