Saturday's free ERMP show cancelled :-(
"unfortunately, between the daunting weather forecast and our inability to swallow the cost of a rained-out show, we have to cancel tomorrow’s concert now. we’ve never cancelled a show before, and doing so pains us a great deal, but after much (depressing) discussion, we feel we don’t have a choice."

Priestess playing 7 shows with Gwar | played Siren
PRIESTESS @ THE 2006 SIREN FESTIVAL (CREDS HOTSTICK)

I got to Siren this year in time to see about two Priestess songs. They sounded pretty good. I used to be a big Gwar fan, but stopped going to see them after their shows started to not seem so good anymore (don't want to taint the memories). Priestess are playing some shows with Gwar, and they're psyched (as they should be).
We just got home from yet another U.S. tour racking the grand total up to 110 shows in the 191 days of 2006! Wow is right! But we're about half done now this August we've got a week of shows with the reigning masters of the stage GWAR! Which is awesome, 'cause we get to watch GWAR seven nights in a row! We're pretty happy about that over here in camp PRIESTESS.
Dates below...
PRIESTESS & GWAR
Aug. 15 - Tulsa, OK @ Cain's Ballroom
Aug. 16 - Memphis, TN @ New Daisy Theatre
Aug. 17 - Cincinnati, OH @ Bogart's
Aug. 18 - Toledo, OH @ Headliners
Aug. 19 - Huntington, WV @ Huntington Music Hall
Aug. 20 - Baltimore, MD @ Sonar
Aug. 21 - Allentown, PA @ Crocodile Rock

David Lee Roth played Nokia & Bluegrass again on Late Night
DAVID LEE ROTH IN MICHIGAN | JUNE 30, 2006 (CRED)

Remember how David Lee Roth did that bluegrass number on Leno and how he scheduled some recent comeback tour dates including one at NYC's Nokia Theatre? Well, the NY Times went to the show, and David did bluegrass again, but this time on Conan.
As the camp factor skyrocketed during the second hour, the crowd’s affection began to sour. When Mr. Roth soft-shoed during “Just a Gigolo/I Ain’t Got Nobody,” a heckler shouted, “Go back to Atlantic City!” When he told a rambling story about the naming of “Dance the Night Away” (something about a drunk woman “with her pants on backwards”), a group of men impatiently shouted “Van Halen!” And when he brought out a bluegrass band to play two songs from “Strummin’ With the Devil,” a countrified Van Halen tribute album, there was a mini-exodus from the main floor.

a Message from the real CAUSE CO-MOTION! | not broken up
Hello,
I recently read a posting on Brooklyn Vegan about cause co-motion calling it quits that was based on a myspace page of the band. I am writing from CAUSE CO-MOTION! HQ to report that this myspace page and recently defunct cause co-motion have absolutely nothing to do with the CAUSE CO-MOTION! from brooklyn, NY. The band in question is from westchester and appeared sometime in May 2006. To combat (or perhaps further) some of the confusion brooklyn's CAUSE CO-MOTION! has started a myspace page of their own, www.myspace.com/causeco
I am also happy to announce that CAUSE CO-MOTION! from Brooklyn, NY is not only alive and well but will be releasing a brand new 45rpm single on Thursday July 27 at the Knitting Factory where they will be supporting their What's Your Rupture? labelmates The Long Blondes, over for the week from Sheffield, England.
All the best to you and your readers,
Arno Kleni

UCB comedy happened @ Summerstage last night
TODD BARRY @ SUMMERSTAGE | JULY 19, 2006

Not long before Jens Lekman did a Todd Barry impression at Mercury Lounge (He said he loves to listen to Todd's CD to relax on planes), Todd Barry himself was performing with Aziz Ansari, the Snapple lady, Paul Scheer, Rob Huebel and others farther uptown at the annual free UCB meets Summerstage event in Central Park. Jens Lekman & Frida Hynvonen @ Mercury Lounge, NYC | pic

So when exactly did Frida Hyvonen get added to the Mercury Lounge bill last night? First I thought Jens went on at 10. Then I saw he wasn't going on until 11. Then I realized Frida was added as opener, but it was too late - I caught just her last song and what she did on stage with Jens. Oh well. Missing Frida's set aside, last night's show is now in stiff competition with Sunday's Amadou & Mariam show for 'favorite show of the year'. It's been a good few days.
Unlike the band-enhanced show I'm expecting at Bowery Ballroom on Friday night, this show was just Jens completely solo - just he and his guitar (and microphone), plus the occasional instrument (harmonica, thumb piano) added in. Also, in one of the coolest Mercury Lounge moves I've seen yet, there was a surprise two-person horn accompaniment from musicians (members of his band?) playing from the back of the room to finish off the song Julie which in turn finished off his pre-encore one-hour set. I was pretty close to the front, so I had no idea that was coming.
Jens sounds better live than on album even, and he knows how to keep an entire room of people captivated, silent, and hanging on his every word. There was lots of crowd participation - sing-alongs, whistling, jokes, and the passing-around of 1970's photographs Jens found under a rock. The photograph-passing started while Jens played a cover song in Japanese. He asked us to please return them by the end of his set. I hope everyone did (unlike that biatch that kept Akron/Family's magic fish at Knitting Factory).
Touring partner, and now Secretly Canadian label-mate, Frida Hynovonen joined him on stage for one song all in Finnish. Jens told us he knows how to play all the instruments already, so to challenge himself he figured he'd start singing in other languages. The Finnish song was a mish-mash of expressions he already knew, like "I love you" and "Excuse me (or something like that)". Frida and Jens provided the translations before they actually sang the song. Everyone laughed which was good because Jens later told us it makes him happy that we laugh at his songs - one of his many seemingly pre-meditated stories that so perfectly led into the next song. "A man walked into a bar..."
I didn't take any pictures, so I hope thisismecl and skipscada don't mind that I grabbed the above pics off Flickr. Tonight's show in Philly is not even sold out (Get to it Philly people).

YouTube being sued by greedy LA riot beating filmer
"YouTube, the popular Internet video sharing site, is being sued for copyright infringement, setting the stage for a courtroom battle over the interpretation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
Considered only a matter of time by those following the dramatic rise of the viral video site, the lawsuit comes from an unexpected source. Rather than a major film, TV or music company, the lawsuit was filed by the Los Angeles journalist who filmed the beating or Reginald Denny during the 1992 LA riots.
Footage of the beating was posted to the site, which plaintiff Robert Tur, co-founder of the Los Angeles News Service, says was done without his consent and subsequently had been viewed more than 1,000 times. He is asking for $150,000 for each time the video uploaded to the service, and an injunction against any additional use of his work." [Billboard]

The Little Ones @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC | pics
DOWNLOAD: Lovers Who Uncover (MP3)

The Little ones have defied the whole bands-don't-have-time-to-mature-thanks-to-the-Internet thing. I first heard them ALL the way back in May of this year. They seemed to have come out of nowhere with really great songs and a shiny self-released debut EP. I got excited for their NYC shows in June/July, but wasn't expecting too much even though there were some "they're great live" rumors floating around.

Ends up, they WERE great live and they DID come out of nowhere. They'd only played live nine or ten times before coming to NYC to play Mercury-Mercury-Bowery. I saw them on July 1, 2006 at Bowery Ballroom which someone told me was their 12th show. Someone else said 13th.
They went on before Elvis Perkins (who went on before Matt Costa) to an impressively sized crowd for an opener-opener early on a Saturday night. Like pros they exuded stage presence and were all smiles. Their songs were tight. You'd think they'd been doing this for a while; Actually they have. Ends up they planned it all this way - practicing and writing and practicing and making a CD and practicing - all before ever playing live. It worked. New bands take note.

"One thing that was really refreshing about seeing them in concert was that they actually had fun on stage. They clearly love playing music, like each other, and were having a blast." [Parabasis saw them at Mercury Lounge]
"Just want to give a gi-normous THANK YOU to everyone who came out to the NYC shows. New York City was tremendous and we had ridiculous fun on and off the stage." [The Little Ones]

"Gnarls Biggie is an independently released, infringement-laden remix project put together by the increasingly (g)notorious DJ unit, Sound Advice. The disc is filled with chopped Gnarls Barkley tracks, and layered with the timeless lyrics of New York\'s black Frank White, Biggie Smalls. Completed over the past few weeks, the disc has been repeatedly removed from MySpace, but that hasn\'t thwarted its creators. If anything it has made them work harder to share their creation with music lovers. Sit back, relax and give it a listen" (thx Tim)

Sirius Playlist - Week 6 (Tribute to Syd Barrett)

I didn't create this playlist with Syd Barrett in mind, but I did dedicate the show to him. Coincidentally it fit. I was feeling especially morbid when I made this one that turned out to be one of my favorite playlists so far.
If you're wondering what I'm talking about, these are the songs I played on my last weekly Sirius radio show (every Tuesday night on Left of Center @ 10 PM EST). If you're wondering why I waited a whole week after the show aired to post this - it's because I'm really good at procrastinating certain things. If you're wondering where the playlist from July 4th is - I took that week off. This is the playlist from July 11, 2006 (with some MP3s)....
1) The Big Sleep - You Can't Touch the Untouchable
The Big Sleep just played with Professor Murder at Supreme Trading in Brooklyn.
2) Professor Murder - Champion
3) MIA - Fire Fire
4) TV on the Radio - Let the Devil In
5) Janes Addiction - Mountain Song
6) The Flaming Lips - Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell
7) Radiohead - Talk Show Host
8) Neutral Milk Hotel - Naomi
Bob Dylan is on tour. Elvis Perkins too. M Ward too.
9) Bob Dylan - When the Ship Comes In
10) Elvis Perkins - Ash Wednesday
11) M Ward - Helicopter
12) Bonnie Prince Billy - Master and Everyone
13) David Bowie - Rock N Roll Suicide
14) Broken Social Scene - Major Label Debut
15) Magneta Lane - Ugly Socialite
16) The Strokes - 12:51
The This Mortal Coil box set is one of my most prized musical possessions.
17) This Mortal Coil - I want to Live
18) Bjork - Pagan Poetry
19) Cloud Cult - Car Crash
20) Antony & The Johnsons - What Can I do? (w/ Rufus)
Playing Bjork, Cloud Cult and Antony after This Mortal Coil makes me happy. Acid House Kings just passed through the U.S.
21) Acid House Kings - Do What You Wanna Do
22) Angela McCluskey - Know it All
23) Andrew Bird - Skin is, My
24) The Weakerthans - Left and Leaving
The Weakerthans were just here too, and I'm sad I missed them to see Yo La Tengo. Rodrigo Y Gabriela are playing Joe's Pub on August 7.
25) Rodrigo & Gabriela - Song of the Traveling Daughter
26) Kaki King - Soft Shoulder
27) Opeth - To Rid the Disease
28) Faith No More - Edge of the World
29) Wolf Parade - Disco Sheets
30) Life of Agony - River Runs Red
31) Talking Heads - Heaven
