What, no James Blunt?

Guillemots AND Muse? Guess they were short on nominees.
Late '90s were a drought, apparently.

What no Outkast (in Past Winners)?

Why would Hail To The Thief beat Kid A in any critic rating list?
thats just stupid.

"What no Outkast (in Past Winners)?"
It has to be a British artist.

That list does indeed have some classic albums. O consider Suede, Screamadelica, New Forms, Dummy and Different Class to be landmark albums that will stand the test of time. As for influence, which people worry about way to much when assessing an album, hindsight will surely give a different view. It might not age as well as the others, but at the time, in 1997, New Forms was IT. People were freaking out over it.
This year I'll go with Arctic Monkeys since the award usually goes to a debut.

"Lily's album probably missed the deadline for nominations..."
Not according to the item on guardian.co.uk that BV quotes above. It says the committee actually did consider it.

How the bleep can Idiot Isobel Campbell be nominated while Belle and Sebastian are not. If it wasn't for Stuart Murdoch, she'd be taking orders in a Glasgow greasy spoon. She is utterly devoid of any talent, and has a terrible singing voice even by indie-pop standards. She was laughed off the stage in Europe when she opened for the Belles on their last tour together.

Morrissey has made known his displeasure with the omission of his new album from the shortlist:
"Thanks to everyone who bought Ringleader of the Tormentors; I'm sorry it remains classically ignored by radio, not to mention those delightful awards events - but, if you really think the Mercury or Brit awards have anything at all to do with musical merit then your brain is probably 75% plutonium-proof concrete. Yes, it's a snake pit.
"I remain very happy with Ringleader of the Tormentors; it has the demeanor of distinction and pleases me more than anything else I've done. It's the Scottish terrier I'll never have."
