Bloc Party played Stone Pony, DJing Misshapes | Pool Set Times

Kele from Bloc Party is DJing Misshapes Saturday night. Earlier in the day he's playing a sold out show at McCarren Pool in Brooklyn. Here are the set times: 6:15 - Mew, 7:20 - Secret Machines, 8:30 - Bloc Party.

LAST NIGHT IN ASBURY PARK
Bloc Party concert last night was cut one song short due to an "electrical storm". Two songs into the encore, the rain started to come down and lightning was evident in skies. After a brief conversation with the stage managers, the band said goodnight which was subsequently met with boos from the crowd. Kele responded with something on the lines of "You had fun though right? We will repay our debt to New Jersey soon" and the crowd responded with cheers. - Bao

A Tribe Called Quest | Updated 2006 Tour Dates

Still no NYC date, but I just updated the Tribe Called Quest tour post with a lot more shows. The tour is sponsored by a video game, and according to MTV News, "...hip-hop producer Dan the Automator — who worked with Decon to compile the game's soundtrack — Phife Dawg is a video game fanatic, which helped seal the deal. Phife will appear as a playable character in the game, as will Flavor Flav, Common, the Roots' ?uestlove and a host of other rappers."

GORILLA BISCUITS IN LIVERPOOL, 1989 (CRED) (SET LIST)
Gorilla Biscuits, 1989

Gorilla Biscuits are playing CBGB on September 3, 2006. That's one day after their sold-out tour-ending show at BB King's with Murphy's Law and Leeway. That's six days before the Angry Samoans play CBGB, and it's 27 days before CBGB closes for good. It's also a little more than a year after GB's now legendary 2005 reunion at CBGB.

Joanna calls the record Ys and we call it awesome!"

Christgau likes Cocorosie's costumes | Voice cover story

30 Bands in 30 Days Have you read the "30 Bands in 30 Days" story in the Village Voice yet? As New Yorkers probably already figured out, the article is actually this week's cover story. I thought of it again when I saw the pictures of CocoRosie in costume from last night's benefit show, because, although Christgau didn't like their live show very much, he wrote that he did like their costumes...

THE SEVEN WORST HEADLINERS CHRISTGAU SAW (best to worst)
Liars
CocoRosie
Futureheads
Excepter
Sara Tavares
Dungen
Morningwood

BEST COSTUMERY ACCORDING TO CHRISTGAU
Ornette Coleman
Gamelan Galak Tika
CocoRosie

The rest of Christgau's rankings are in the article.

Golden Smog played Bowery Ballroom, NYC | review & pics

Antony isn't the only show I missed last night. Nick Brassbonanza brings us this review of the Golden Smog show at Bowery Ballroom...

----

"Golden Smog are a loosely connected group of musicians comprised, at various times, of members of Soul Asylum, the Replacements, Wilco, The Jayhawks, Run Westy Run, The Honeydogs and Big Star." [Wikipedia]

GOLDEN SMOG @ BOWERY BALLROOM, NYC | JULY 26, 2006 (CRED)
Golden Smog @ Bowery Ballroom

Golden Smog rocked the Bowery Ballroom last night for close to 2 hours. They ran through a set consisting of their classics, “He’s A Dick” and “If I Only Had A Car,” new(er) songs “Hurricane” and “Corvette,” and even a cover of Bowie’s “Starman.” Mike Mills of R.E.M. came out and played guitar during “Revolution Blues”, no Tweedy.

Given the options last night, the indie kids were not at this show. The average age had to be 40 years old; I may have been the youngest one there. This was clearly visible during the encore when another surprise guest came out. The opening chords of The Stooges classic “I Wanna Be Your Dog” began to pour through the speakers and then you here, “Craig, you ready!?” I look to the side of the stage and the Hold Steady front man, Craig Finn, comes crashing onstage! Everyone in the crowd was looking at each other like, “Who the hell is this guy?” I lost my mind! The energy that Finn through out could not be dismissed and he seemed truly possessed, even wrapping the mic chord around guitarist Kraig Jarret Johnson’s neck. It was by far the highlight of the night. The show ended perfectly on that high note. The Smog were indeed back, with the help of a few friends.

----

Dan Murphy, Gary Louris, Kraig Johnson, Marc Perlman, Jody Stephens, Linda Pitmon, Mike Mills, and Craig Finn performed at this show

Tweedy wasn't at the Minneapolis one either.

Mew @ Hiro Ballroom, NYC | pics

Stream Mew's album this week at AOL Music.

Mew @ Hiro Ballroom

Except for two painfully cheesy songs, I loved Mew last night (July 26, 2006) @ Hiro Ballroom. The show was part of the Danish band's first U.S. tour. Hiro Ballroom was pretty filled up and happy (last time they were in NYC was 2003 @ Mercury Lounge - thx anon). Anna the contest winner also wrote in to say she thought the show was awesome. Try not to miss them if you're going to see Bloc Party. They're opening.

BUT I MISSED ANTONY
It was a painful decision to see Mew actually. It meant missing Antony @ Warsaw, but I successfully overcame my Antony addiction (the treatment is working) and went with my 'flavor of the month' instead. I'm happy I did.

Cloud Cult Tour Journal in PAPER Magazine

"After one of this week's shows in New York City, the club manager paid me in cash. I discretely placed the wad in my back pocket along with the cash we received in T-shirt and CD sales, which was a large roll made up mostly of single dollar bills. In fact, I placed it so discretely in my pocket that I forgot it was there...." [PAPER Magazine of all places]

The Black Crowes like Frankies 457 in Brooklyn

Frankies 457 is a vegan-friendly reasonalby-priced fancyish Italian restaraunt on Court St in Brooklyn. The (vegan) food (that I've had) is awesome. In yesterday's Gawker Stalker I found out the Black Crowes are Frankies fans too...

"Chris Robinson spinning obscure psycheldic records at Frankie's 457 in Carroll Gardens last night (Monday night). Something was amiss with the turntable connection to the speakers and the sound was very scratchy. Robinson smoked lots of weed and seemed generally perplexed by the fact that his turntable sounded like crap. Ran out to the garden hurriedly one time to answer his cell phone. Wonder who that call was from..." [Gawker Stalker]

"Nevertheless, it's packed with the owners' celeb pals, like Kate Hudson and Chris Robinson. The restaurant opens at 8AM for espresso and biscotti, and serves wine and cheese deep into the night." [AOL CityGuide]

"Chris Robinson threw a birthday party for his wife Kate Hudson here." [Concierge.com]

"In one night I saw Kate Hudson, her hubby Chris Robinson and the rest of the Black Crows, and Tim Robbins." [Browstoner]

They danced outside Bloomberg's house

"'Dancing is not a crime!' New Yorkers screamed on the park side of 5th Avenue and East 79th Street on a Saturday afternoon. About 200 people of all ages and ethnicities moved their bodies to the rhythm of a percussion band, expressing themselves through the most primal art form in human history. They gathered at this designated spot to show they are entitled to the right to dance whenever, wherever and with whomever they want." [NY Press]

Girl Talk played Lit, playing Mercury Lounge & in your stereo

"164 pop culturally relevant samples forced into a perfect 45-minute party mix."

Girl Talk

If you're like Pitchfork, Central Village, and every other person I talk to (including myself), the new mixtape by Girl Talk called Night Ripper is what you've been listening to. If you were in the know before the July 17th 8.4 Pitchfork review, you may have caught Gregg Gillis (aka Girl Talk) at his July 7th show in the basement of Lit (NYC). If you missed it, you have another chance at Mercury Lounge (NYC) on August 18, 2006 (tix not on sale yet).

Then again, maybe it's just a B-, OR if you're TinyMixTapes, you agree with the quote on the top of this post that it's perfect.

Cibelle tix on sale | Pitchfork talks to Devendra

Caetano Veloso

Pitchfork: One of my favorites along those lines is Caetano's 1971 album when he was in exile in London. He's all bundled up in that huge fleece parka on the cover and his face has this unbelievable sadness. It's only 35 minutes long but it lingers every time I play it. I'm haunted by a line like "In the hot sun of a Christmas day."

Devendra Banhart: I've been thinking about that line all day. Oh man. What's funny is I'm sick right now because I recently spent a day in the rain and the cold in London shooting a music video with Cibelle, this Brazilian contemporary artist, for her version of [Veloso's] "London, London" [on her just released, The Shine of Dried Electric Leaves]. I sang it with her. Anyway, it's a short but fucking epic album.

Cat Power @ Hiro Ballroom | Bao got some pics

CAT POWER @ HIRO BALLROOM, NYC | JULY 25, 2006 (CRED)
Cat Power @ Hiro Ballroom

I missed both Cat Power shows at Town Hall in June, so I got pretty excited when Chan Marshall (Cat Power) announced another NYC show at Hiro Ballroom. That show was last night (July 25, 2006), and it was [insert a synonym for 'amazing' here].

It was just Chan on stage by herself with a piano, guitar and microphone. She was in extremely good spirts; she told us so. Everyone sat on the floor; she told us to (thank God). She covered "Crazy", part of it at least - half jokingly. Her voice is one of my favorites, and she has an uncanny stage presence and sense of humor to boot.

We were instructed not to take pictures, but it looks like Bao was able to sneak a few flashless snaps without anyone noticing. Please throw reviews and a setlist in the comments.

At first glance the lineup for the Dot Dash Festival seems to be full of bands you've never heard of. At second glance, well you probably still never heard of them, BUT once you read the descriptions of these mystery bands, it actually starts to seem like something pretty interesting....

The Alarm Clocks ROCKET FROM THE TOMBS – This classic 70s proto-punk band reunited for a small tour in 2003. This is their first return to NYC since then. NOTE – this is the same lineup as the previous tour, including Richard Lloyd (Television) on guitar.

Band info for Thurs July 27

THE DICKS – The 1980s punk band was infamous for their
provoking song “Hate The Police” (the song that got
their Central Park show shutdown); Mudhoney later
covered it. Politically charged, smart lyrics and
outsider attitudes brought this Austin punk band into
national prominence with the insurgence of the
hardcore scene. They toured with bands like Bad
Brains, Black Flag, Zero Boys and Flipper. Their
local scene included Big Boys and MDC. The band
reunited in the last couple years, playing shows in
their hometown of Austin TX and in singer Gary Floyd’s
town of San Francisco. You can read their official
bio, and here classics like Hate The Police, Kill From
The Heart and Fake Bands and some live tracks at their
myspace page as well as a fan page

2nd site - http://www.myspace.com/thedicksband

THE MARKED MEN – Denton TX’s Marked Men are making
their NYC debut. They have done very successful tours
of The Mid West, West Coast and Europe, but this is
their first visit to New York. Their new record is
out now on Swami Records. Tight, infectious, fast
pop-punk. A fantastic live band!
Web - http://www.myspace.com/themarkedmen

CARBONAS are one of the first touring bands that Dot
Dash booked in NYC; the punk band came to the city for
their first shows with their fellow Atlanta buddies,
Black Lips, back in 2002. They play fast, catchy punk
rocknroll.
Web - http://www.myspace.com/thecarbonas

PISSED JEANS – Lots of people took notice of this
Pennsylvania noise-punk band when Sub Pop signed them.
Like their pals, Clockcleaner, these guys take their
cues from the disturbed 80s sounds of Flipper,
Killdozer and Scratch Acid. This is their Dot Dash
debut and we are proud to have them!
Web - http://www.whitedenim.com/pissedjeans/

LIVE FAST DIE – NYC punk rock via Littleton, NH – the
hometown of GG Allin. Fun, funny, ridiculous and
catchy songs like “Passing Out in Front of the
Children”, “Fat Guy With An Ipod” and “Snuff Movie”.
The band played a successful US tour this spring to
promote their debut record “Bandana Thrash Record” on
Dead Beat Records.

Band info Friday 7/28:

THE ALARM CLOCKS – This Cleveland Ohio band recorded
one of THEE classic 60s garage punk songs way back in
1966 – “No Reason To Complain” (covered by countless
bands including Lyres and Little Killers). This
underground gem, recorded while these guys were in
high school, was brought to wider attention when it
was included on the influential “Back From The Grave”
Vol 1 compilation of 60s punk, teenage, primitive
rockers. A big influence on any primitive band,
Cramps, Gories, etc, The Alarm Clocks only really
played a few shows back in their hometown.
MIRACULOUSLY, the band was resurrected this past year
for a show in Cleveland OH with The Boxtops and The
Choir; they also played this past May and the Soul,
RocknRoll, Blues Fest, Ponderosa Stomp. What is MORE
miraculous is they sounded just as raw, just as punk,
just as Kinks, Stones, Seeds influenced as back in
1966!!!! And, to top it off, they have been writing
many new songs that have that same real-rocknroll
attitude,. The new tracks are so good, that the
supreme rocknroll label, Norton Records, plans to
release a full length of new material this Fall. All
reports are this will be THEE rocknroll band event in
NYC this Summer!!! Dot Dash is very proud to host
their very first NYC show!!!
Web - http://www.alarmclocksyeah.com/

THE CYNICS – Pittsburgh, PA’s finest 60s psych-garage
rocknrollers return to NYC for the first gig since
2004’s CMJ Music Marathon and Little Steven’s
Underground Garage Festival on Randall’s Island. They
started in the mid-80s neo-garage rocknroll scene and
have been playing killer high-energy shows ever since.
Fuzzed out guitars, swinging 60s beat-influenced
rocknroll!!!
Web - http://www.thecynics.ws/

THE ORIGINAL SINS – Eastern PA’s psychedelic-garage
rocknroll band started with Brother JT (Birdman, Drag
City) in the mid-80s. Influences include 60s
psych-punkers like Love, Seeds, Stooges, mixed with
some lush pop sike of The Beatles and The Who. JT is
a great song writer, and this is the band where it all
started. This is a rare reunion gig for the band!
Web – http://www.brotherjt.com/index.cfm

THE HENTCHMEN – Detroit Michigan’s swingin’ frat
rockers meets wave-pop return to NYC for a rare
appearance. Guitar, Drums and Farfisa Organ. They
were signed to Norton Records in the late 80s and have
been rockin ever since. Real RocknRoll. Note – the
drummer and keyboard player have been backing The
Paybacks and Johnny Hentch’s new band is SSM.
Web - - http://www.myspace.com/thehentchmen

TURPENTINE BROTHERS – Another band with guitar,
keyboard and drums! This band has more of a 60s soul,
rocknroll feel. Fans of Reigning Sound and Detroit
Cobras, will dig this Boston trio’s swingin’ sounds.
Web - http://www.myspace.com/turpentinebrothers

Band info for Saturday 7/29:

ROCKET FROM THE TOMBS – This is the original, seminal
Cle punk band from the 70s. The band has been written
about countless times by Lester Bangs, Legs McNeil,
David Fricke and any number of rocknroll journalists
as one of the more important bands of the post
Velvets/Stooges American underground of the mid-1970s.
The band that penned two of the most important
anthems of punk’s first wave, “Sonic Reducer” and
“Final Solution”; they also penned such classics of
the era as 30 Seconds Over Tokyo” and “Ain’t It Fun”
and “Life Stinks”. This is the band that spawned two
of Ohio’s more famous late 70s punk acts, Dead Boys
(Cheetah Chrome) and Pere Ubu (Crocus Behemoth, aka
David Thomas). The band first got back together
around a CD comp of rare recordings from 1974-1975 and
toured the US in 2003 to much acclaim. They NYC shows
were astounding!!! This short tour includes, the same
lineup, including original members David Thomas (vox),
Cheetah Chrome (guitars), Craig Bell (bass), plus
Richard Lloyd on guitar (Television) and Steve Mehlman
on drums (Pere Ubu).
NOTE – see attached press kit for more info.

THE LITTLE KILLERS – It is fitting that NYC rocknroll
trio, The Little Killers return to play this year’s
Dot Dash Fest. They were on the very first Dot Dash
show (July 2002 w/ Rogers Sisters) and they played the
first Dot Dash Fest (July 2003 w/ Black Lips and The
Spits at Sin-e’). The band was on a short hiatus in
the late 2005, early 2006. But they are back with an
amazing new record on Gern Blandsten Records, recorded
by Jim Diamond. There is a reason John Peel flipped
over this band ad featured them on one of his final
Peel Sessions. REAL rocknroll indeed!
Web - http://www.myspace.com/thelittlekillers

DC SNIPERS – It is fitting that this New Jersey
proto-punk, rocknroll band would play a bill with
RFTT. They would have fit quite nicely on a bill
guys would have fit in nicely in the Mid West pre-punk
era circa 1975 w/ Rocket, Electric Eels or The Pagans.
They had a successful tour and SXSW showcase this
Spring to support their debut release, “Missile
Sunset” on Dead Beat Records. They are in the studio
this Summer to record their follow up. Dot Dash is
proud to have them back on this year’s festival.
Web - http://www.myspace.com/thedcsnipers

ANGRY ANGLES Jay Reatard and Alix Lid lead this
amazing, frantic wave-punk band. This Memphis band
last played a wild show at one of Todd P’s loft in
February with Black Lips and Tyrades. Very catchy,
fast music with hooks, influences are bands like Wire,
Devo and Wipers. Excellent performers. The band also
runs one of the hippest labels around, Shattered
Records.
Web - http://www.myspace.com/angryangles
Shattered Records info -
http://www.shatteredrecords.net/

IMAGINARY ICONS – Dot Dash’s “house band” so to speak,
included TomDash on bass. Art-punk, psych-drone
rocknroll with songs about living off The Grid,
Kenneth Anger and face transplants! The band should
have their first 7 inch single ready for the Fest on
Daggerman Records.

30 days of shows w/ 65 year old Robert Christgau

"In the 65th year of my life on this planet, I went out to see live music every night (or day) of June. The main reason I conceived this project, which many considered nuts, was that I wasn't liking enough new guitar bands. So my professional purpose was to encounter young musicians in their natural habitat. But since the idea of going out is to have fun, I wasn't rigid about this. In 30 days I caught all or most of 52 acts and bits of nine others. To start, here are a few things that happened in New York in June—not always the best, but worth remembering...." [Village Voice]

Initially in town to just play Siren, they also played a small show at Maxwell's (Yeti, WCG & Snobbery were there), and now I guess they're back today because they're the musical guest on Letterman tonight (July 25, 2006).

"The Hold Steady are getting ready to release their third album, Boys and Girls in America on Oct. 3 via Vagrant. The set, made with the help of producer John Agnello, is the first for the band on Vagrant and will feature the keyboard playing of Franz Nicolay. "The nice thing about piano is that it is such a dynamic instrument," singer Craig Finn told Billboard.com. "It gives [the songs] more space." As for the album's title, it's a reference to a line from Jack Kerouac's On the Road. "The line goes, 'Boys and girls in America have such a sad time together,'" Finn said. "Basically, the songs are about guys and girls, and love. It's not a concept-type record like the last one -- it's more of a theme record."" [SPIN]

An Interview with Jens Lekman

I see a lot of concerts, so it's hard to feel bad about missing one of them, but of all the shows I miss this year, the Jens Lekman (with band)/Beirut show at Bowery Ballroom Friday night (July 21, 2006) will probably be the one I regret not seeing the most. Then again, I saw Jens (solo) at Mercury Lounge just two days earler, and I've seen Beirut before, AND I'm sure there will be plenty of opportunities to see both of them again (especially Beirut who lives in NYC). In fact, Jens (who lives in Sweden) is playing NYC one more time (but not with a band) when he finishes the rest of his tour - the tour that took him from NYC (without Beirut) to Boston to play TT the Bear's Saturday night (July 22). That's where Mike (who interviewed Beirut while they were in Boston) caught up with Jens before he took the stage....

JENS LEKMAN @ BOWERY BALLROOM | (JULY 21, 2006) (CRED)
Jens Lekman @ Bowery Ballroom

BrooklynVegan Mike: Listening to your songs, I get the impression that most, if not all, of them are 1st person. Do you have a desire to write 3rd person, or completely fictional songs?

Jens: All of the songs I write are 1st person, with some fictional elements. The songs I write are my interpretation of events that have occurred in my life. How I perceived that reality to me. There is some fiction in there. After a while, I forget what parts are real and what parts are not.

BrooklynVegan Mike: Since the songs then deal with people you know or have had experiences with, how has the reaction been from the subjects?

Jens: They have been fine. Some people don't mind, others did. I have told everyone that if anyone was offended or didn't like being the subject of a song to please tell me. I really would like to know.

BrooklynVegan Mike: I am thinking of the girl in "Psycho Girl," does she know?

Jens: Yeah, she knows. That was pretty bad. We don't talk anymore. I would rather not get into it.

Sweden BrooklynVegan Mike: My next few questions are about Sweden…..well, let me ask you; does it bother you that you have to answer regional questions?

Jens: I understand people have a fascination with Sweden, but sometimes I get asked really dumb questions. Once, I was being interviewed by a DJ in New Zealand and he asked me, "so, I hear there are a lot blondes in Sweden?" I said yes. Then he asks, "How does that affect your songwriting?" [gives a confused look]

BrooklynVegan Mike: [laughs] how did you answer it?

Jens: I laughed it off. How could I answer that? I am from Sweden and I understand people have preconceived notions about it, which I am fine with. So, to answer your question, no.

BrooklynVegan Mike: Okay. Now are you as big in Sweden as the press makes you to be?

Jens: Yeah, I am popular in Sweden, but to be honest, being popular there is like being popular in Massachusetts. The population of Sweden is about 9 million. One of the great aspects of that is because of the countries size it is easy for artists to make a name for themselves. There really is no difference between a big label and a small label. Within the country, there is nothing a major label can do that a small or indie label can't

BrooklynVegan Mike: From this ignorant American's point of view, Swedish music seems to be comprised of pop, garage rock, or death metal. Obviously, there are other genre's. How come they haven't been able to break out?

Jens: There are other genres of music, and some of it does have an appeal outside of Sweden. In Sweden, I would say there are three dominant genres of music; swing pop, prog-rock, and party rock.

BrooklynVegan Mike: Prog rock, really? I would have never guessed that.

Jens: Have you heard of Dungen?

BrooklynVegan Mike: Yeah. I forgot about them.

Jens: They are pretty big in Sweden. For whatever reason, Swedish prog-rock has a following outside of the country. There are parts of the world, like the United States, that has a strong pocket of prog-rock fans. And party rock works everywhere.

BrooklynVegan Mike: I asked the regional questions because it seems that if something comes out of Sweden that is remotely pop-ish, they cite Abba and talk about Sweden's rich history of pop music, or techno in France or Twee in Scotland.

Jens: Exactly. People in other countries try to lump in these bands into their preconceived notion of what that country is supposed to "sound" like. Like you said with Abba in Sweden, when people think France they think Kraftwerk and Tour De France. The only exception to that is if a sound comes out of that country that is completely counter to that sound. So, with pop music in Sweden, people point to death metal. I think another reason for that is that it helps sell that music abroad.

BrooklynVegan Mike: How did you get all of the samples cleared?

Jens: We try to get as many as possible. We work hard to get as many permission slips from bands as we can. The thing is sometimes even if a band or artist says it is okay for us to use it, the label still steps in. With some labels, you have to buy up to a million at a time. Before I signed with Secretly Canadian, we had a discussion about the samples and we came to an understanding. If I worried about all of the samples, a song like Maple Leaves would have never been recorded.

BrooklynVegan Mike: What if the album gains notoriety and people begin listening for those samples?

Jens: I am all for paying the artist. I take full responsibility for that. I sacrificed myself in terms of samples and what was left out and I regret it. I told myself I would never do that again.

BrooklynVegan Mike: Seeing how you made your name in the states (file-trading, blogs) and the manner you release a lot of your music (12-inches, limited run e.p's), are you ever concerned that your music is more an object of collection over an object of appreciation?

Jens: Not really. I know what you are saying, but I think that is something any band or artist has to deal with. I make the e.p's and stuff on small runs for the fan that wants to hear all of the music I have made. I have a lot of music. I gave Secretly Canadian 200 songs.

BrooklynVegan Mike: Artists such as Jose Gonzalez and El Perro Del Mar have created an awareness in the states. Their initial exposure, at least to me and many people I know, came from their association with you. Do you feel at all like a gateway to expose artists?

Jens: I do, just a little. I am first and foremost a music fan, a music collector. Whatever what kind of name I have been able to establish for myself I would like to try help to get those artists who I think should be heard, like with a Jose Gonzalez or an El Perro Del Mar. I hope in time I can introduce other artists I think should be given a bigger audience.

BrooklynVegan Mike: Now I read that the first people to hear your music were the labels you sent your demos to.

Jens: Only one. Secretly Canadian was the only label I sent my demos to.

BrooklynVegan Mike: Really? That's interesting. Was there any one point when you realized the music you made in your bedroom was being played around the world?

Jens: No, I don't think in terms of moments. Everything has just been kind of moving…[stops and listens to Frida Hyvonen playing]…I love this song. Anyway, I try not to summarize things like that. I can't point to one particular moment and say, "I made it." It's no fun of thinking of life in those terms.

Jeff Mangum sang with the Instruments @ Cake Shop

MANGUM & THE INSTRUMENTS @ CAKE SHOP (via Pitchfork)
Jeff Mangum with the Instruments

I definitely don't get to everything I mean to post on this site. One such item I meant to give you a heads up on was the Elephant Six-related Instruments tour that hit Cake Shop in NYC on Friday night (July 21, 2006). For that, I'm sorry, because Pitchfork has since found out that Jeff Mangum made another surprise stage appearance at the initmate basement show (after making an appearnce in the audience of the Os Mutantes show earlier in the night):

During the Instruments' set, Mangum joined the band for one song. According to my friend Mike Noble, who supplied the information about both the Os Mutantes and Cake Shop shows, "Mangum sat in with the Instruments on a song (er, stood in, sang in his loud I-don't-need-no-microphone way, wordlessly chanting."

Optical Atlas heard from someone else at the show:

"...there were only two dozen or so people in the room, many of whom were members of Elf Power, Apples, et al.--but a certain Mr. Mangum joined the Instruments on stage at the Cake Shop last night for a single song, toward the end of the set. It was 'When the Stars Shine,' I believe. I snapped a couple of blurry camera pics of the event..."

This is NOT A HOAX (I think).

Konono #1 early show cancelled | Summerstage & Bjork(?)

KONONO #1 @ SUMMERSTAGE | JULY 23, 2006 (CRED)
Konono No 1 at Summerstage

Someone (thx Chris) just told me that the early (7:30) Konono #1 show at SOB's was cancelled tonight. All tickets will be honored at the late (9:30) show instead. I'm nor surprised they couldn't sell out two shows since they played two shows there so recently AND they played a free show at Summerstage (yesterday).

Pitchfork recently reported that Konono recorded some stuff with Bjork.

"Synopsis: Twenty-two-year-old Sebastien (Georges Babluani) leads an impoverished life with his immigrant family constantly struggling to support them. While repairing the roof of a neighbor’s house, he overhears a conversation about an expected package which promises to make the household rich. Sensing the opportunity of a lifetime, Sebastien intercepts the package which contains a series of specific instructions. Following the clues, he assumes a false identity and manages to slip through the grasp of the enclosing police as he ventures deeper and deeper into the countryside. The closer he gets to his destination and the more people he meets along the way, the less he understands about what he is looking for. Ultimately, he comes face to face with a ring of clandestine gamblers placing bets on the outcome of a multi-player, high stakes tournament of Russian roulette. Directed by newcomer Gela Babluani, 13 TZAMETI (pronounced: ‘zah-meti’) is a winner-take-all thriller, where an unfortunate young man is transformed into Contestant #13 with no way out save his luck."

Os Mutantes played Webster Hall

OS MUTANTES @ WEBSTER HALL (by the NY Times)
Os Mutantes @ Webster Hall

"Forty years after Os Mutantes got started in Brazil, this band played its first American concert on Friday night at Webster Hall. And for the length of its set, the psychedelic 1960’s were back: the 1960’s of playful ambitions, blithe eclecticism, virtuoso silliness and lighthearted but genuine rebellion." [NY TIMES]

Peeping Tom (Mike Patton) | 2006 Tour Dates (w/ Gnarls Barkley), Album stream, etc.

Mike Patton - Peeping Tom "It's time to put all that care-free, nude, apartment-walking on hold: Mike Patton's Peeping Tom is hitting the road. Besides frontman Patton, the touring crew also features human beatbox Rahzel, Alap Momin of Dalek, vocalist Imani Coppola (remember "Legend of a Cowgirl"?), turntablist Mike Relm, and Dub Trio, who also open on select dates. After some overseas shows this week, Peeping Tom will open for nine Gnarls Barkley gigs. Craziness will no doubt ensue." [Pitchfork]

The August 17th NYC Summerstage gig is one of the Gnarls Barkley shows Pitchfork is talking about, BUT that is not our only NYC chance to peep Peeping Tom. A peep at their MySpace page (WHERE 9 OF 11 ALBUM TRACKS ARE STREAMING) reveals that Peeping Tom is also playing without Gnarls in AC & BK:

Aug 15 - House Of Blues - Atlantic City Atlantic City, NJ
Aug 16 - Warsaw - Brooklyn Brooklyn, NY
Aug 17 - Central Park Summerstage NY, NY w/ Gnarls Barkley

Will there be special guests at the shows? I'm not sure, but the album is full of them: Norah Jones, Bebel Gilberto, Dan the Automator, Amon Tobin, Kool Keith, Massive Attack, Dub Trio, Kid Koala, Odd Nosdam, and Doseone.

All PT dates below...

An interview with Lifetime (Ari, Dan, Pete & Scott)

The recently reunited Lifetime played Bowery Ballroom in NYC two nights in row at the beginning of July (the 8th & 9th, 2006). Unfortunately for me, I was out of town. Lily Olive was there though, and not only did she see one of the shows (7/9), she sat down with four members of the band (@ Bowery Ballroom) and asked them some questions. Below is the transcript of her chat with Lifetime's Ari Katz (vocals), Dan Yemin (guitar), Pete Martin (guitar), and Scott Golley (drums).

LIFETIME @ BOWERY BALLROOM, NYC (CRED)
Lifetime @ Bowery Ballroom

Lily BrooklynVegan: First off, welcome back. You have made many people extremely happy by reuniting. What prompted the official reunion last November after such a lengthy hiatus of almost 9, 10 years of being away? I know you were scheduled to play Hellfest.

Ari: Yeah, that’s what got it together.

Lily BrooklynVegan: Did they just approach you about playing Hellfest?

Pete: Yeah, they offered us like, I mean, three years in a row, like “do you guys wanna play?” They offered us a bunch of money, we were like nah, nah, nah. Then finally..

Ari: We couldn’t turn it down. But that got it all back together again, then, you know, once we actually started practicing again we all knew instantly we should definitely do this. It was so much fun. We have Hellfest to thank, so thank you Hellfest.

Pete: But we ended up donating half to charity.

Scott: I gave a large amount to the Greyhound rescue, saved some puppies from being shot.

Lily BrooklynVegan: Nice. You got back together and saved some dogs.

Lily BrooklynVegan: What were the main reasons you disbanded in ’97?

Scott: Pete quit.

Pete: It was all my fault, I’d had enough. The reasons in my head at that time of why I did it seemed to make perfect sense, but now I can’t imagine, like, you know I couldn’t of put up with it a bit more. But at that point in time we had been touring for three years, not really making any money, we were trying to make a living, and it was way different being a band back then. We were like dirt poor in a van.

Lily BrooklynVegan: You got burnt out.

Pete: Yeah. I was 25 and needed to pay rent. I quit and got a job.

Scott: Then the wheels kinda feel off the whole thing.

Ari: Yeah, it just started to fall apart a little bit. You know, like forgetting why you were doing it.

Lily BrooklynVegan: I know some of you had other projects going on during the hiatus (Kid Dynamite, Paint It Black, Zero Zero), ect. Is Zero Zero still around?

Ari: No, but we just put out a 7-inch though.

Lily BrooklynVegan: On Jade Tree?

Ari: No, Dave Palaitis put it out on his label, Runrock.

Lily BrooklynVegan: So what was it like to perform at SXSW this year?

Ari: It was just a fun time to go there and play a low stress show and just have fun and hang out.

Lily BrooklynVegan: I hear My Chemical Romance was a secret headliner.

Ari: In the beginning it was secret, then everyone knew.

Scott: They were real nice guys.

Lily BrooklynVegan: What about the Court Tavern show vs. Bamboozle?

Ari: I thought Bamboozle was way more fun.

Lily BrooklynVegan: Really?

Ari: Yeah, I was stressed at the Court Tavern show for some reason. I totally got there, and it was weird, felt very strange to me. But Bamboozle was like being in school play or something. The stage was so huge, the people were so far away, it’s like you just go up there and get in your own world.

Pete: We’ve never done anything like that before, nothing that big. There were 30,000 people there.

Ari: It seemed like a lot of people involved, it felt really nice, it was really, really fun.

Dan: I think there were 15,000 people watching us and 15,000 people were in line at the porta-john. It was totally like that…I’m a collector of experiences and it was a fucking experience! I think the coolest thing was having the contract, playing in a place that we kinda grew up in to 150 people with sweat coming off the ceiling, which is an inch above my head…

Scott: He jumped and he got stuck in the ceiling

Dan: Yeah I got my head stuck in the ceiling, and then the next day playing on the battleship….haha

Pete: It was like playing on the deck of The Love Boat

Lily BrooklynVegan: Haha, ummm yeah guys….So you have a new album coming out next year on DecayDance/Fueled By Ramen, Pete from Fall Out Boy’s label. I hear rumor’s it’s coming out around Fall…

Ari: We’re recording it in the fall, it will come out in the spring. Spring’s a good time, you know, the birds, the flowers, the records..we’re not an autumn kinda band, we’re a spring kinda band.

Lily BrooklynVegan: So it’s coming out next year?

Ari: Yeah, March or April. That’s what I’m told.

Lily BrooklynVegan: I know that everyone’s kinda wondering why not Jade Tree and what were the factors involved?

Ari: We worked with them for a long time and you know, we were getting back together and we were real excited about being on something new that didn’t really have much of a long history, just everything new, new people and everything..

Pete: Who were all very very very excited to be working with us

Lily BrooklynVegan: Did you know Pete?

Ari: No, but we’re friends with a lawyer who’s his lawyer, and it happened so fast, that was it, it was really quick.

Lily BrooklynVegan: So there wasn’t even any talk with any other labels?

Ari: Out of the people that would and could do it, nobody else was tripping about it….He was like “I don’t care if you play 5 shows, 50 shows or 500 shows to support it, I just want to do it.”

Pete: It was whatever we wanted

Scott: As far as how different our lives are and what we can and cannot do, for someone to be like “I wanna do it, and you can do whatever you guys want” ..

Ari: yeah, you can’t tell a bunch of dudes with kids at home that they’ve got to tour eight months next year..he was like “do whatever the fuck you want, we’ll just pay for it.”

Dan: I met Pete when his old band played with Kid Dynamite at our old place in Baltimore.

Lily BrooklynVegan: Do you have any title ideas for the new album?

Scott: We don’t even have a name for the first new song we’ve been playing out at shows.

Ari: It’s called new one. I have some ideas, but I think we’d rather not know.

Lily BrooklynVegan: What about the two-track single you guys are putting out on Decaydance this Fall, is there a release date?

Pete: Yeah, it’s this Fall

Dan: We’re recording it in three weeks, after this tour at the end of August…

Ari: Yeah, it’s gonna be on itunes and vinyl.

Dan: Yeah, who wants to buy a two song CD, that’s just stupid.

Lily BrooklynVegan: Have both those songs been completed? I heard you play a new one on Saturday night.

Ari: We have 9 that have been going around and 5 or 6 that we play every week.

Lily BrooklynVegan: So the writing process is going well?

Scott: It’s gonna be much better now that Pete just moved back from California

Lily BrooklynVegan: How do you bring your ideas together and is there a set method or does everyone contribute?

Dan: To see things that you’ve come up with change in the hands of your friends, to get transformed into something better than you’ve heard in your head is really exciting.

Pete: Being in other bands and then coming back to this….this is the best creative process band I’ve ever been a part of, every other band there was one person leading and everyone else kinda following and it’s lame.

Dan: Every artist is a control freak, but letting go turns out to be way less stressful.

Lily BrooklynVegan: Any upcoming full tours in the works?

Ari: This is a full tour, 8 days, haha.

Lily BrooklynVegan: Ok, do you have any consecutive weekends lined up?

Ari: No, we shouldn’t even be doing this, we have a lot of work to do at home.

Lily BrooklynVegan: Dan is vegan, any favorite NYC restaurants?

Dan: My new favorite is not entirely vegan, but it’s a new Thai place on 1st called “Pukk,” fucking rules, all vegetarian and a couple things have egg in them, but you can ask them to take the egg out. I like Atlas Café for dessert..

Lily BrooklynVegan: How about Red Bamboo?

Dan: Yeah! In my other band, every time we come see NY the show gets scheduled around a visit to Red Bamboo. That place rules.

Lily BrooklynVegan: What is it like to hear so many bands obviously influenced by your sound?

Scott: I’ve never actually heard a band that said they were influenced by us sound remotely like us..

Ari: People say they were, and that’s amazingly flattering. If it wasn’t for a lot of those bands we probably wouldn’t be doing it today.

Lily BrooklynVegan: What are your thoughts on the current state of the music industry?

Ari: It’s always been a really confusing thing for me being in a band and trying to create something from the heart and then having to have to go to a business model to make it available is really strange to deal with and to me I guess I can separate the two but I have to walk away when people are talking too much about the industry and focus on other things to keep myself from going crazy. But the things that are crazy in the industry now are everything’s bigger with higher stakes and more money, but it’s still the same feeling…you still feel like you have to balance to make something quality and make it also that people will want to get behind it.

Dan: I think art and commerce have always been uneasy bedfellows, totally weird and uncomfortable. It’s a very weird thing to be situated between.

Ari: We love playing music and we love the kids that come.

Lily BrooklynVegan: Do you have future plans/goals for the band?

Ari: Our immediate goal is to make an awesome record and have fun.

Scott: We just want to have fun, make a great record and hopefully people will like it.

Dan: It’s such a privilege to be able to do this again with the same people and not have our eyes too far in the future.

Lily BrooklynVegan: The past two nights shows at the Bowery have been completely insane. People went nuts. Everyone was singing along to every word of every song. At one point I thought the balcony was maybe going to come crashing down from all the jumping and pointing, haha. How have the crowd reactions made you feel?

Pete: I figured since it was NY everyone would just be kinda watching us, but everyone went ape shit.

The Stills @ The 2006 Village Voice Siren Festival, Coney Island, Brooklyn, NY | pics

The Stills sounded great at Siren this year, and I don't just mean their songs - they may have been the only band I saw all day that really came through the soundsystem in a rich/clean way. I watched their whole set before running over to the Stillwell stage to catch the end of The Cribs.

I only actually saw the last two songs the Cribs played because they were on at the same time as the Stills. I didn't realize their singer (Ryan) was such a nut. For one more pic of him, check out my first Siren post.

---

"The Cribs were on next and this trio from Wakefield England totally rocked with their guitar punk rock. The drummer at times would jump on his set playing standing up and I found their songs to be quite catchy. Mid-way through the set Ryan cut his chin and started to bleed but continued to sing, drink and smoke as the blood dripped down his chin. During the final song he chugged a beer and rocked out."
