Swan Lake (Destroyer+Frog Eyes+Wolf Parade) to release CD on Jagjaguwar | MP3

Swan Lake

Swan Lake is the new project of Dan Bejar, Carey Mercer, and Spencer Krug. Back in June Carey told us they were finished recording an album. Well, the album is coming out on Jagjaguwar (home of Oneida, Ladyhawk, Wilderness & Okkervil River), and that's who just sent out this first much-anticipated MP3......

DOWNLOAD: All Fires (MP3)

"I don’t like Spencer." [Martin from Think About Life]

Press release (track list included) below....

SWAN LAKE (Dan Bejar, Spencer Krug, and Carey Mercer) To Release Debut Full-length on Jagjaguwar

Call them what you will (a certain word that rhymes with "Uber Soup" is probably coming to mind for a lot of you), but the three members of the newly-formed Swan Lake (Dan Bejar of DESTROYER and NEW PORNOGRAPHERS, Carey Mercer of FROG EYES, and Spencer Krug of WOLF PARADE and SUNSET RUBDOWN) are all old friends and have been collaborating in one way or another for years. They will release their debut album, "Beast Moans", in both the CD and LP formats on Jagjaguwar on November 21, 2006.

Mercer and Krug's connection goes back the furthest, as Krug has always been an on-again, off-again member of Mercer's Frog Eyes, appearing on record with him as far back as the band's 2002 debut, "The Bloody Hand". The two are also former roommates.

When Bejar was putting a band together to flesh out his midi-based Destroyer album "Your Blues", he picked Frog Eyes as his backing band, and he also took them on the road as his opening act. They also recorded an EP together -- "Notorious Lightning and Other Works" -- with new versions of songs from "Your Blues". For the European tour promoting "Your Blues", Mercer and Krug were his band, and thus the seed was planted for Swan Lake to form; i.e., why not make this a real band and collaborate not just in a live setting but also in the process of songwriting? Before they chose a band name, Mercer would often refer to the new project as "The Songwriters Project".

Their full-length record features, among other things, beast moans, starling voices, cobra hi hats and arpeggiating pianos. The songs are great weaves, showcasing the famous and very distinctive songwriting styles of Bejar, Krug and Mercer. The sum is definitely greater than the parts, and at distinct points on the record a new "combined" style emerges that throws whole heaps of magic into the air, sounding like nothing else.

"Beast Moans" was recorded in a summer cottage town in Canada, and in Victoria, in a house that Krug and Mercer are familiar with and Bejar feels comfortable enough with. It was "self-produced". "Beast Moans" is a testament to friendship, eternal and otherwise.

---

Track-listing for SWAN LAKE's "Beast Moans" CD/LP (Jagjaguwar, JAG098)

1. Widow's Walk
2. Nubile Days
3. City Calls
4. A Venue Called Rubella
5. All Fires
6. The Partisan But He's Got To Know
7. The Freedom
8. Petersburg, Liberty Theater, 1914
9. The Pollenated Girls
10. Bluebird
11. Pleasure Vessels
12. Are You Swimming In Her Pools?
13. Shooting Rockets

"The fact that I have no real idea what this record sounds like is a testament to who the alpha males are in the project, if you're gonna look at it that way" [Dan Bejar]

Death From Above 1979 Breaks Up

DFA 1979 "i know its been forever since i wrote anything on here. im sure by now most of you assume the band isnt happening anymore since there are no shows, no work on a new album, etc. well. i wanted to let you know that your assumptions are correct. we decided to stop doing the band... actually we decided that almost a year ago. we finished off our scheduled tour dates because there were good people working for us who relied on us to make a living and buy christmas presents and pay rent etc. we couldnt just cancel everything and leave them out to dry... plus i think we wanted to see if we would reconsider after being out on the road. our label was really hoping that we would change our minds, so they asked us to keep quiet about the decision for at first. well, its been quite awhile now and we are still very sure the band wont happen again, so i guess its time to say something...." Major Labels Sue LimeWire

"The suit, filed in federal District Court in New York, claims that since August 2000 the defendants designed, distributed and promoted the LimeWire software and network for its 'superior infringement capabilities.' The defendants allegedly profited by receiving payments from third parties for advertisements, bundling third-party software with LimeWire, and a shopping function in LimeWire Basic software." Concert Organizers (that aren't affiliated with Webster Hall) taking steps to help audiences beat the heat

WAITING FOR WATER @ THE 2006 PITCHFORK MUSIC FESTIVAL (CRED)
water @ the Pitchfork festival

(at Lollapalooza) "There will be an air-conditioned, 3,300-square-foot enclosure — called the AT&T Oasis — where fans can catch a break from the heat, along with a 1,000-square-foot patio complete with fans and misters. There will also be more than a dozen free water stations, and security guards, stationed at the front of the stage, will be armed with hoses to soak the crowd. During last summer's searing Lolla, organizers set up just six free water stations and two misting stations. But they also utilized hoses to cool down the 66,000-strong audience, distributed 1,200 bottles of free water and summoned four cooling buses when temperatures reached triple digits." [MTV News]

(part of) an Interview with Cold War Kids who signed to Downtown Records, played Maxwell's, etc...

COLD WAR KIDS @ MAXWELL'S IN HOBOKEN | JULY 31, 2006 (MORE LIKE THIS)
Cold War Kids @ Maxwell's

Right before Midlake, Sound Team & Cold War Kids came to NYC to play Mercury-Mercury-Southpaw-Maxwells, they played TT The Bear's in Boston, MA. That's where new BrooklynVegan interviewer Christine caught up with them....

BrooklynVegan Christine: So you guys have played a lot of shows in New York, opening for Two Gallants at bowery, and your shows at Pianos. Because of them, you’ve gotten a lot of attention on blogs and such, have you received a lot of label interest, and if so, will you guys be signing soon?

Cold War Kids Nate: We have had some pretty good label interest. We, I guess, since that time, of that stuff going on, post south by southwest, we’ve got to learn a lot about what it is we want going into it. First meeting with different labels, we had no idea what we were after and we were like, you know, new enough to know we didn’t need to make any rash decisions. We could take our time learning which is kind of weird because there are classic clichés that labels want to rush bands into deals that they don’t know all of the repercussions of. So I think we’ve heard enough of those stories between friends and reading about bands that we like, that we know we need to get everything we want out of a deal and to be with a label that is really respected and to do a lot of research and work and all that stuff. So that stuff is all going to be figured out pretty soon for us, so that’s going to be nice.

(I think I know what they just said to each other - bv)

-----

Pitchfork reported today that "the buzzed-about band will release their debut album on Downtown Records, home to Gnarls Barkley, Art Brut, and Eagles of Death Metal."

-----

This weekend the band plays Lollapalooza. Here's a little more of the interview...

BrooklynVegan Christine: You’re schedule to play Lollapalooza in August. Will this be the biggest crowd you’ve played?

Cold War Kids Jonnie: who knows?
Cold War Kids Nate: yeah I don’t know. It could be nobody there that early. We don’t know. But it will be interesting to see how hot it is. Hopefully there will be a lot of shade and misters maybe. It will be fun though to see some other bands that we like. It will probably be…. there could be a lot of people there. I don’t know if people really have the intention to watch a band that early in the day. I don’t think probably anybody goes to a large festival to see a band they’ve never heard of, for the most part. So that’s kind of a tricky thing. Like when you have 30 bands you want to see and there’s that one you’ve never heard of, it’s not high on your priority list.

Dead Kennedys (sort of) playing CBGB & Boston | $35 tix

DEAD KENNEDYS | NOVEMBER 2005 (VIA)
The Dead KennedysThe Dead Kennedys

The Jello Biafra-less Dead Kennedys are playing CBGB on September 21, 2006. That's nine days before the club closes for good and one day before the The Dead Kennedys play Axis in Boston. It's also ten months after the same lineup played Irving Plaza....

As soon as the set was over, I zipped off to Irving Plaza for the Dead Kennedys gig. I got there about 15 minutes into it, and the slam dancing was in full force. I ran up front right, saw my pal and proceeded to have the best time at a rock show since The Hives last NYC show. I was weaned on slam dancing with fun spirited rockers in the early 80s, and it was an exhilarating trip down memory lane last night. Since I was late, I know I missed some good songs, but I was there to hear DK classics like Too Drunk to Fuck, Chemical Warfare, Bleed for Me, Holiday in Cambodia, Nazi Punks Fuck Off and others. It was like 1981 all over again! All sweaty, all fun, all smiles. [Waved Rumor]

$35 CBGB tickets are on sale.

CD sales down, Digital sales up, etc

"Last week's numbers were not pretty. According to Nielsen SoundScan figures, physical album sales were the lowest they've been since January 1994; as of the week ending July 25, CD sales had dropped 7.8% for the year. While the sale of digital albums has grown by almost 123% in 2006, the development of that sector so far is not keeping pace with the decline of physical product; adding in equivalent digital albums, the business overall remains down 0.7% this year." Jackson's Wednesday MP3 Roundup

Jackson's second day on the job....

------

* I am obsessed with The Foundry Field Recordings. If you haven't checked them out yet, there are a couple of MP3's on [The Test Pilot]

* Have you heard Klaxons? I think they're very cool, and they bring some "new" to new wave. For some reason they remind me of both Test Icicles and CSS. They also have two dates in NY in September, (one with Soulwax). [Exitfare]

* If you dig the Friedberger siblings (The Fiery Furnaces), two songs have leaked from brother Matthew Friedberger's album's Holy Ghost Language School and Winter Women. [Stereogum]

* These following tracks aren't new, but these bands are all awesome and I dont think they get the attention they deserve. Those of you who know Supersystem should know about Antelope, (recently played at Union Pool with/and touring with Rahim), and should furthermore know about Edie Sedgwick. All three of these bands include musician Justin Moyer, and let's just say his stage presence is fucking creepy! Dont take my word for it though, watch these videos, and go to the blog to download the tracks.
Videos: [Antelope at Union Pool] [Antelope Live in Milwaukee] [Supersystem Live in San Fransisco]
Music: [Man The Change]

* And Finally,Think Tank, has some cool tracks up. Although some were posted more than a week ago, I think the songs are still pretty awesome. Live Shins concert, (w/ new tracks), Link to new Mountain Goats tracks, (and covers), and Flaming Lips demos! [Think Tank]

I'm done,
Jackson

An Interview with Think About Life (Matt, Graham & Martin)

Blogs! Blogs! Blogs! Blogs! Blogs! Blogs! Blogs!

DOWNLOAD: Paul Cries (MP3)

THINK ABOUT LIFE'S MATT, MARTIN & GRAHAM
Think About Life @ Knitting Factory

Think About Life played an intimate gig at Finger on the Pulse at the Lucky Cat in Brooklyn Friday night (July 28. 2006). Christos Mountzouros and crew were there to capture it on video. The next morning Christos and crew met up with TAL at a "huge, 5,000 sqaure foot empty warehouse room" in DUMBO (Brooklyn, NY). Here's what they said to each other...

BrooklynVegan Christos: How did think about life, come together, and decide to think about life as a unit?

Matt: Well, let's see. Graham and I lived in a place called the electric tractor, a venue loft space, in Montreal and uh it took a little while to convince him that we should play together, but we went down and practiced in his space, and normally he plays guitar but there was this cheap white keyboard there, and plugged that in... and it was just MAGIC. Then we decided we needed a vocalist, and Martin played in a band called DONKEY HEART, and he just seemed like the only choice.
Graham: I added him to my windows messenger, started sending him mp3s...
Martin: The internet!

BrooklynVegan Christos: This is obviously a new age of music, with the internet fueling your popularity, is that weird for your guys? Were you the types of people who served music blogs before you started popping up all over them?

The entire band chants...fists in the air...
"Blogs! Blogs! Blogs! Blogs! Blogs! Blogs! Blogs!"

Martin: No, we don't check out any music blogs.
Matt: I read some blogs!

the boys give him a hard time...
Matt: I now do, I never did before... now that I'm narciss-surfing all the time!
Martin: I was gonna say, the internet is full of porn and tons of other stuff that you can't find anywhere! You know, so you might as well find blogs, and music from around the world.
Matt: It does open up a lot of new options though, you don't have to rely on mainstream media to get your information.
Graham: Exactly.

BrooklynVegan Christos: What about your friends? I was reading about a band the other day and one of the band members said some of their friends don't know they're even in a band. What about your friends? How active are they in your career?

Martin: Without our friends we wouldn't be here... most of our friends really helped us. Everyone was really excited about our music in Montreal, it was really supportive.
Graham: Yeah, a lo them were involved in the booking... the artwork...

Think About Life CDBrooklynVegan Christos: I was going to say, the artwork on your website and your album art is pretty amazing. Did you know the person who did it personally? How much of it was your idea, or did they just come to you with this images that happened to work?

Martin: Let's say his name! First of all, there's Jack Dylan and then...(points to matt)
Matt: I'm Matt Shane! Yeah, Jack and I collaborated on the album art itself, mostly from Turkey, I was living in Turkey for a while. I would send him out samples, he would put them all into Photoshop. A guy named Brendan Reed did the website, he works in the same kind of style as Jack and I... he also sings in one of our songs.

BrooklynVegan Christos: Looking at the album art, and your myspace page, I have to ask, are you basketball fans or what?

Martin: It's been asked before... sorta...
Matt: Former Basketball fans.
Graham: We're into Barkley and Magic Johnson.
Matt: We all dream as well I think.
Martin: The Dream Team basically. Look, basketball turned into Gangsta Rap at some point and that's when we sorta said..."guys, look, we love gangsta rap, but we won't promote it in basketball.
Matt: We don't want them to be the same! They have to be seperate.
Martin: I agree.

BrooklynVegan Christos: In terms of the vocals on the album, there seems to be more of a concern with creating sound and exploring sound so that it means something, rather than simply creating crisp, perfect pop vocals. Did you always have that in mind?

Martin: My voice is fucked up! My whole family has a fucked up voice. So that's how the vocals came to be... it was just natural.
Graham: We recorded them all in one take too.
Matt: We're also all coming from different backgrounds. I was always into hardcore. Getting into this band was like, cleaning up a little bit. I feel like we spent a lot of time in the production, though by industry standards, we didn't spend much time at all.
Martin: Haha... no one went to California, LA, to record stuff... none of that happened.
Graham: I actually, secretly recorded my parts in California.
Martin: You did?
Matt: His hideaway
Graham: I'm considering moving there.

BrooklynVegan Christos: How did you guys end up on Alien 8?

Matt: They’re in the area, and they showed some interest in us early on.
Martin: Actually, it’s all because of this guy Dave from Quebec City who saw us play and said to the Alien 8 guys, “you have to sign these guys!” We have to thank him, I think his name is Dave… yeah…Dave.
Graham and Matt: Shout out to Dave!

BrooklynVegan Christos: What’s touring with THINK ABOUT LIFE like? Do you guys find time to write new stuff on tour? Or are you more focused on fine tuning the old songs, making sure they get better and better on the road?

Matt: We work on new stuff.
Martin: On the road though?
Matt: Well, on the road we don’t work on anything. We generally try to figure out new stuff while we’re playing at home.

BrooklynVegan Christos: Anyone your fans of? Bands you’d like to collaborate with?

Matt: Spencer Kruger. Aren’t we all dieing to do a side project with Spencer Kruger.
Graham: Spencer’s a good guy.
Martin: I don’t like Spencer.

BrooklynVegan Christos: Any albums that really touched you recently?

Matt: Sunset Rubdown, before that, Wolf Parade. Oh, and Final Fantasy, that’s a fantastic album.

BrooklynVegan Christos: Talk to me about opening for Wolf Parade, I saw them about a year ago and they were crazy, and while I missed your set, I did notice that your lead singer wasn’t Martin? Who was that and where is he now?

Martin: Was he big and white?

BrooklynVegan Christos: Yes! And was his name Beaver? Because I think I met him in a bar.

Martin: Another shout out!
Graham: Martin actually couldn’t get into the States that time, so we sort of just asked Beaver if he wanted to go on tour with us, take the role of front man, and he did. He ended up doing all of the driving too.
Martin: I think he’s about to release an album soon.
Graham: Yeah he does really great solo stuff.
Martin: Beautiful stuff.

BrooklynVegan Christos: What has been your favorite city thus far while touring? Any places in particular you love?

Martin: Portland.
Matt: Montreal… and Brantford Ontario.
Graham: Downtown is like totally destroyed, there was like no one there, but there were concerts behind abandoned factories. It was awesome.

BrooklynVegan Christos: Did you really start as a band with just a distorted Casio keyboard and drums to provide entertainment for a house party? Do you like playing small parties as opposed to bigger shows?

Matt: Well, our first show was the last party we had at our house. We like playing small, intimate, sweaty shows, they take the cake over large venues.

BrooklynVegan Christos: You’ve played with Wolf Parade and Art Brut… which experience was a better one?

Matt: Well, it’s tough to say. Martin wasn’t with us for Wolf Parade, so that sucked. But, on the other hand, Wolf Parade are our friends and it’s always more fun to tour with friends.

BrooklynVegan Christos: Your songs seem well crafted yet still erratic. There’s all this panic in the music, mayhem if you will, and then it all gets soothed, quieted down, resolved. Your songs are like stories each with an exposition, and a climax, a resolution… Is this planned or does it just happen organically?

Martin: Fully organic.
Matt: We don’t bring much material to practices, like Graham will have a riff or two and we’ll jam on that.
Graham: Just as long as the ending is louder than the beginning.
Martin: There’s lots of pauses and we’ll be like, “Maybe this should go here?” and then we’ll change our minds and change the song completely.

BrooklynVegan Christos: Alien 8 calls your songs, “party anthems” do you agree? And do you guys like to party? I also like the phrase, “causing panic on the dance floor,” was that one of your intentions?

Graham: I was kind of panicking last night. I saw Martin on the dance floor and he grabbed this guy by his shirt. It looked like he was gonna fight the guy, the guy was dancing…
Martin: The guys wasn’t dancing! I grabbed him because he wasn’t dancing! He danced after I grabbed him! I had to grab him to start the dancing!
Graham: I was panicking. There was panic, there was a dance floor there you go.

BrooklynVegan Christos: I’ve also heard you described as an "electric tractor house band." Any idea what that means?

Matt: That was our house, the name of our old loft.

BrooklynVegan Christos: Why isn’t snowee caterpillar on the album?

Martin: Good Question.
Graham: I don’t like it anymore. I sang it, and I just don’t like it.
Matt: It’s one of my favorite songs, actually.

BrooklynVegan Christos: You’re also touring with the Long Blondes, signed to What’s Your Rupture. Love is all is also signed to that label. You a fan? I envision the perfect tour: The THINK ABOUT LOVE tour. You down?

Graham: That might happen actually. Kevin from What’s your Rupture is always in touch, and we love Love is All.

BrooklynVegan Christos: The songs have so much energy and motion, do they mostly come from a happy place?

Martin: I think it does come from a happy place. But I think it comes from a place where, we’re three boys going to the boys club, and we’re like, trying to get away from our parents and all the problems and stuff around the city and just come together and be ourselves.

Matt: I find no matter what mood I’m in when we get together, it’s about the collaboration and that comes from a happy place. It isn’t one person’s vision really.

BrooklynVegan Christos: Well, lastly, what’s next for you guys? More shows? Another album?

Matt: We wrote a lot of new songs, hoping to record an EP by this January.
Martin: Basically, we’re going to try and record a new album, make new music, and play it all over the world!

ABOUT THE INTERVIEWER
Christos Mountzouros has been a music lover all his life. While he currently works as a design coordinator for an animation company, he loves seeing music, making music, and writing about it. His past concert antics include: making Bjork a CD of himself singing a bunch of her songs and throwing it at her on stage, pretending to be part of an opening band to hang out with the headliner, jumping on stage after concerts and pretending to be a music video director, and of course, screaming his token, “Never Stop!” at bands he loves. Christos lives in the east village but already misses Dumbo, doesn’t eat meat and loves wine, open bars, and brooklyn bridge park.

(wish I could say the same about Forward Russia yesterday)

Professor Murder play Cake Shop in NYC tomorrow (Thursday August 3rd). They're also opening for Girl Talk at Mercury Lounge (which makes that show full of tons of best new music).

Art Brut touring with and without We Are Scientists | those Dates + more pics from Siren

Art Brut @ Siren

Tickets are on sale for an October 19, 2006 Art Brut show at Irving Plaza in Manhattan, and for a show the day before at Warsaw in Brooklyn. What do these two venues have in common (besides Clear Channel)? Art Brut hasn't played either of them yet! They are surely on their way to playing more NYC stages than the average NYC band. I am not complaining about that.

And before they get here in October, they'll be on the road as usual - from Austria to Brazil to North Carolina on September 18th when they start a tour with NYC's own We are Scientists aka Art Brut 47. The Spinto Band also open at all the U.S. shows. All dates (along with more pictures of Art Brut at the 2006 Siren Festival) below ....

guest blogger Jason Trachtenburg | on Cell Phones and such

DOWNLOAD: Middle America (MP3) (another)

You know him as a solo artist and 1/3 of "indie-vaudeville conceptual art-rock pop band" The Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players. He's Jason Trachtenburg, and unlike Jackson, he IS Vegan. In honor of the Trachtenburg's new DVD, Jason will be bringing us some guest posts right here on BrooklynVegan.com. Here's his first one - written from the road - all the way in Ireland....

I'm staying positive here.
I have to keep saying that,
so with that in mind, the parameters have been set off.
It's a pleasure and an honor to be guest blogging for Brooklyn Vegan.
I don't generally blog, but I am an obsessive-compulsive vegan to the highest degree so I think I may actually like this.

My thoughts on vegetarianism are as widely known as my music and I am grateful that people like what we are about.

Apparently I am listed in Wikipedia as one of the world's most renowned vegetarians (just after Tolstoy) and I was nominated as one of PETA2's Sexiest Vegetarians of the Year, 2005.

Those are some of my credentials. Credentials make this serious business.

Our music is about fun but it is also about serious issues. Like these. The issues that need addressing immediately concern the over saturation, mental and physical, of exposure to cellular phone radiation frequencies. These telephonic devices were designed for the military and introduced to the public as a means to avoid or solve emergencies, and were initially sold to us touting that benefit. Life-style and convenience matter more to most than the obvious (and the unknown) health risk factors contained within these highly powerful radioactive devices.

Cellular phone antenna towers and the frequencies themselves are proven to be radioactive. Frequent headaches and microwave ear drip are commonly reported side effects. These devices affect the cellular structure and rapid mutation of brain cells. Many people are living in denial, and are trying to forego the obvious;

cellular phones are a major health hazard, and are part of the greatest and riskiest self inflicted experiment in the history of mankind. Cancer rates have never been higher, and people are now living life with the thought that such cancers and diseases are inescapable and inexplicable.

People must be consciously aware that their lifestyle can be deadly. I welcome any responses to these comments, and I will further expound about the social ramifications of cellular phones as well as i-pods.

Of course I am typing this on a computer right now. I am staying positive here.

With meaning,
Jason Trachtenburg

-----

Stay tuned for part two! And see the Trachtenburgs when they come to a town near you.

Jackson's Tuesday MP3 Roundup

A NEW BROOKLYNVEGAN FEATURE
Everyone please help me welcome Jackson Pollis to BrooklynVegan.com. In additon to just generally being a huge music fan, Jackson can be found DJing at clubs and parties all over NYC, most often at Misshapes, and recently on the main stage of the Village Voice Siren Festival in Coney Island. Jackson, a life-long Brooklyn resident, is also in a band and has starred as a Power Ranger on the hilarious television program Wonder Showzen. Jackson is a pretty busy guy, and now he's even busier because he just took on another gig - providing us all with approximately five beats MP3 links a day. We're calling it, creatively enough, "Jackson's MP3 Roundup. This is his first post....

Answering Machine bootlegging out of the question

"Rolling Stones fans can listen to a soundboard mix from the group's Paris concert today by calling a telephone number and paying $1.99 for 7 minutes. The ridiculous thing is that after your seven minutes are up, you have to call back to hear more. Apparently, there's no way to hear the whole show uninterrupted. Rolling Stones manager Marty Erlichman says that's to prevent bootlegging." [Boing Boing]

RIP ROCKPILE Magazine | Sleater Kinney on NPR & another final show | Lollapalooza streaming too

After more than 12 years and 120 issues of of consistent, regular publication, Rockpile Magazine will be closing its doors.

Rockpile Magazine "While rumors have been floating for awhile (mostly due to the fact that the mag became as flimsy as Keira Knightley), word finally came down at the beginning of this week that Rockpile Magazine is over. The Philadelphia-based bi-monthly mag started out as a free publication back in 1994. Ten years later it was sold by founder Joe Kirschen to staffers Mike McKee, Allan Kemler, and Matt McGlynn. In turn, the mag began charging and found brief success as a nationally distributed publication covering the latest in 'independent music and culture.' The mag helped launch the writing careers of many rock critics you read on a daily basis. But the cost of distributing said magazine has finally caught up to them." [Tiny Mix Tapes]

Philebrity reports that Rockpile publisher Allan Martin Kemler is working on a new project.

NPR is going to stream one of Sleater Kinney's final performances, the one tonight (Aug 1, 2006) in Washington DC in fact. Also, if you've been following along, you know their FINAL performance went from being Lollapalooza to being a final show in Portland to to being TWO final shows in Portland.

Speaking of streaming Sleater Kinney performances and Lollapalooza, that wll be streaming too.

This is Fake DIY has a tribute to Sleater Kinney: Part one & Part two

The Rogers Sisters are opening for Sleater Kinney at all the shows before Lollapalooza including TOMORROW at Webster Hall.

More on the Cardigans cancellation

Maybe this irate message posted on The Cardigans' message board (7/16) is related to the cancelled shows:

Hey all!

I don´t know why the US tour has been announced yet. We in the band has NOT accepted the budget for the whole trip yet and for me it´s unaccaptable to announce a tour before it´s all set. So all of you who celebrate now, you may be in for a big dissapointment. Sorry to say this, but it´s the truth.

Tricky's U.S. Tour Postponed

Tricky's website still lists August 2006 U.S. Tour Dates, but it looks like the tour was pushed back to the Fall. Ticketmaster says his Anaheim, CA is now 10/27, and Irving Plaza's site says the NYC show is now 11/13 ("All tickets for the August 19th show will be honored").

The Beer Line @ McCarren Pool, NYC | pics

The Beer Line

By the time Mew left the stage on Saturday, the wait time to get carded, buy a beer ticket, and in turn get one small cup of beer, was ONE HOUR (not an exaggeration). Gothamist is calling it "the beer situation".

Jerry writes, "When we saw them (Bloc Party) at MacCarren Pool on Saturday, the ability to get beer was hampered by having only two locations for 5,000 people. My sole experience of the Secret Machines is from that line."

"Sparklehorse, the alt.country/indie rock brainchild of singer/songwriter Mark Linkous, are set to release a guest-laden fourth album.

Dreamt For Light Years In The Belly Of A Mountain, the long-awaited follow-up to 2001's It's A Wonderful Life, is due out on September 25 via Astralwerks. Linkous wrote many of the record's songs at his farm in Bremo Bluff, Virginia and recorded them at his Static King Studio that he recently relocated to the Smokey Mountains of North Carolina. Drummer, multi-instrumentalist and frequent collaborator Scott Minor contributed once again.

The new release also features guest appearances by a bevy of stars, including Dangermouse, Tom Waits, The Flaming Lips' Steven Drodz and producer Dave Fridmann (Mercury Rev), who was a major contributor to It's A Wonderful Life." [Chart Attack]

Jake Shears considered suicide after touring

"He confessed: 'Getting off the road was the most miserable thing I've ever experienced in my life. I've never felt so low. I was ready to go walk over to the Hudson and float away. It was more than a comedown. It was like shooting a torpedo into the ground.'" [Yahoo]
