BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE @ PROSPECT PARK | JULY 6, 2006

The high ticket price definitely kept people away from this one. Unlike the free TV on the Radio show a week earlier, you could barely tell there was a show going on as you walked up to the park. The gate around the venue deters most people from listening on the outside, and inside was probably only 1/3 full - about as many people that can fit in the seated area. That's still a lot of people, but a lot less than the place can hold. Feist, Emily Haines, and Jason Collett were absent. Stars' Amy Millan played head female vocalist.

I think I've seen BSS too many times (yes, "wah", I know). I love them, but this show didn't add anything to the collective experience. I've heard Kevin Drew dedicate a song to the people who were at their first NYC show (at Northsix) more than once. The stage antics and songs all felt too familiar. Hearing music in the park is always a plus though. Maybe I should have checked out Mates of State instead.

broken social scene is breaking up

Seriously though, did everyone catch all those hints about breaking up (even though they do it all the time in the press)? The talk of pretending it was a "farewell" show, that they "sould never tour without" their sound guy who was leaving, all the nostalgia bs....
They did something similar to a smaller degree at Webster Hall too, but it made me wonder how long they can keep a monstrosity like BSS going.....
Oh, and we DEFINTELY didn't need two versions of the same song (Major Label Debut)!

Kevin Drew says here they are just going on a hiatus, but they've got shows booked through September:

I enjoy both Major Label Debut's - especially the fast version.
I also liked some of the "blue-eyed soul" songs they're doing - I'm not familiar with all of those, but I thought they were among the strongest songs in the set.
The sound suffered from the "outdoor concrete bandshell" syndrome for the start of the set, but improved during the evening. It also could have been louder - I thought it was much louder during Hidden Camera's set.
The somewhat steep price kept it comfortably uncrowded - but still a healthy turnout. There was plenty of room on the grass to picnic or frisbee, and room in the seats for dancing. I thought a nice balance was achieved.
We talked to Brendan after the show. He did not mention a breakup, but said some of the new songs may end up on "solo" albums.

i've seen them 7 times now (including the northsix show) and they never fail to impress me. and seeing them in the bandshell was fine by me, better than webster hall in my opinion. but thats just moi. i dont get people's negative reactions to what they say on stage or the so-called "nostalgia-bs." it feels genuine to me, and i appreciate that. they are a traveling circus with a big sound and a feeling that they matter, and i am impressed by that.

agreed. the room was great.

yes, the room was great. and yes, the ticket price was steep, but i honestly felt okay by that this time because it is the one fundraiser for all the free prospect park shows, which have been and will be some good ones. so to overpay a bit for one of my favorite bands in order to see tv on the radio or maceo parker or whoever for free all summer long... i am okay with that. if you want to check out steep ticket prices, go see ticketmaster prices for those mccarren park shows - bloc party esp. whew.

I agree - I thought it was actually better that you had to pay to go to the show. As a result, I could actually see and the people who were there wanted to be there hence didn't talk during the slow songs but danced during the fast ones. I loved it.

I enjoyed the show last night and it was my fourth time seeing them. The crowd was into the show and band was having fun. I definitely picked up on the comments about it being a farewell and the article about the hiatus doesn't sound promising. I guess we'll just have to wait and see and hope for the best.

i definitely agree. i'd be happier if they increased the tkt prices. there's nothing i hate more than watching my fave band next to smelly wage workers and students.

I love Broken Social Scene. I had spent the day convincing every friend I had that my $30 ticket price was worth it, and that this band was perhaps more important (production, songwriting, etc.) than any of the other indie acts of the last 5-10 years.
I left after 3 songs.
The sound was unbearable. Amy Millan was horrendous, off-key and offensive. Overall, the sound was inexcusably bad and seemed entirely half-assed.
I tried to describe my emotions: "The feeling of seeing something you thought so special and untouchable be totally dismantled and sold out in front of you."
Perhaps my reaction is so out of control because of my over-the-top excitement.
Either way, this will go down as one of the most massive live dissapointments in recent memory.

come down from the ledge, man. sometimes the sound is better than other times. Sometimes feist or emily shows. It doesn't mean they're done being a great band.
On a side note tho, I was blown away at how few people were there. They could have sold 1000 more tickets and I thank them for not. that was a very well-run event. No lines for anything..

what was the music that was playing between the hidden camera set and broken social scene?
Posted by lbjross | July 8, 2006 2:48 AM
Break up of BSS????? Nothing was hinted of that at Toronto Island show, or Broken Mascis Scene. Touring sucks, and they probably just frustrated with crazy US customs, because they are from Toronto South

I'm really bummed about the sound system at Celebrate Brooklyn. Apparently, it's the same crappy one that they installed last year (and weren't happy with). You can still barely hear shows when you're up on the hill (inside the gates). That was never a problem in previous years. It certainly isn't a problem at Summer Stage. We went to see Laurie Anderson with my mother-in-law and even she was complaining she couldn't hear (and she hates loud music). Thank god I was up close for TVotRadio or I never would have known what a brilliant show it was.

"what was the music that was playing between the hidden camera set and broken social scene?"
It was from the flaming lips album "the soft bulletin", not sure which songs.
As for the sound, I was right up close and it sounded fantastic after some of the levels got balanced out. I heard that even 10 feet farther back made a big difference, however, so I'm glad I got a good spot

Amy Milan is definitely more comfortable with some songs than others. No mention of Lisa Lobsinger? I thought she performed very well on the Webster Hall stint.

thats not true. this sound system can support any act in the world.

they were playing at war with the mystics not the soft bulletin

someone from the parks department came over to the soundboard after the first couple of bss' songs and made their sound guy turn it down. those around heard him pretty loudly scream "NOOOOOOO". the parks guy sat next to him at the soundboard the rest of the show to make sure he didn't turn it back up...
Posted by Flo | July 8, 2006 2:55 PM
hasn't anyone realized yet mates of state kinda suck?
Posted by bsswasgreat | July 8, 2006 5:30 PM
Not everyone went to Mates of State. I went to see Immaculate Machine at the Mercury Lounge. There was a decent-sized crowd there for them, and a nearly full house for the headliners, Six Organs of Admittance.
Posted by so there | July 8, 2006 5:52 PM
i don't get the BSS phenomenoneneon. they're totally meh to me... Mates of State are cool though. in other news, saw CYHSY the other night and they've gotten alot better live!

did anyone see the frat guys smoking weed from their gravity bong? funny stuff!
Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2006 10:18 AM
Frat guys? Did they think this was OAR instead of BSS?
Posted by GDI | July 10, 2006 10:54 AM
they probably got too stoned and thought they were at the guster show.

Then pay to see your fave bands at your local music venue and skip the outdoor shows. I personally love that Celebrate Brooklyn shows are only $3 and anyone can be exposed to (and fall in love with) music / bands that they otherwise might not.
Warning: This "wage worker" will be at Thursday's LoYaTengo event.

i was thought the show was worth the money! they played for 2 hours...there were the right amount of people and the sound was pretty awesome! I think if you sat in the grass it could have been a little bit lower but it still sounded great. you got to give it to them for putting on an awesome show
Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2006 12:57 AM
Man, I couldn't *stand* Lisa Lobsinger at the Webster Hall show. Sure, Feist couldn't make it, but they could've gotten someone with some personality in their voice to fill her shoes. It seemed to me that Lobsinger could've been some chick they randomly pulled up from the audience.
Posted by Sara | July 27, 2006 1:31 PM
heyyy I know this is kind of after-the-fact, but do you have any more/ higher-res images from this particular show? i was there and never really got a chance to take pictures.
it would be greatly appreciated.
