DIY & Indie redefined
"So...indie rock's lost its mystique, is what I'm saying, yeah, but I don't necessarily pine for it, because it's finally truly possible to be DIY, and I think that's great. People will always marvel at success, and now you can succeed on your own terms, which is all anyone ever wanted. " [Chris Ott] (thx Joe)

TOTALLY agree.
it's actually true. the ability to make and release music is easier and less expensive than ever before. the toss up is that you have a ton of mediocre music and a scene that rewards the latest instead of the greatest.
i sure miss the 80s and 90s when an indie label like touch and go could find a great band and foster their career over a few years.

good points made here. I'm in the middle. I do think it's great for everyone to be able to make and release there own music but at the same time I miss going to the record store and seeing a certain ratio of artists as opposed to how dizzying the choices are today.

This is a really good point. I think in the next four to five years we will see a total shift in the ideas of what music is to most people and the ways they attain it. There is already a huge downsize in the number of mom and pop music stores that are still open. I'm not sure if this is good or bad, but it makes me really happy to access music that I would not have heard if it were not for sites like this and many others. Though I do miss having perminent copies of all the records I own. I've noticed in the last year or so my buying trend has switched to digital formats. I guess it's just me wanting instant gratification.
