Girl Talk played Lit, playing Mercury Lounge & in your stereo

"164 pop culturally relevant samples forced into a perfect 45-minute party mix."

Girl Talk

If you're like Pitchfork, Central Village, and every other person I talk to (including myself), the new mixtape by Girl Talk called Night Ripper is what you've been listening to. If you were in the know before the July 17th 8.4 Pitchfork review, you may have caught Gregg Gillis (aka Girl Talk) at his July 7th show in the basement of Lit (NYC). If you missed it, you have another chance at Mercury Lounge (NYC) on August 18, 2006 (tix not on sale yet).

Then again, maybe it's just a B-, OR if you're TinyMixTapes, you agree with the quote on the top of this post that it's perfect.

And what exactly do you find talented about sampling? Every DJ in Cincinnatti does the same shit every Saturday night.

thx.

seems like a good way to spend a friday night. hopefully everyone will be drunk, and god forbid...dance.

but wait, i thought dancing at shows is obnxious.

maybe you should listen to the cd before you trash "sampling".

ah well, ignorance is bliss because you can always claim to be right.

I CAN'T wait to check Girl Talk out now. That's too many ringing endorsements to miss

Yeah I totally hope people dance. That would be really awesome. Just to watch people dance. God, people should dance more. Did they dance? Did the kids at the show dance? I hope they danced. If they don't dance I'll just cry. Please dance. Just rise up and DANCE. I can't believe people would just go to shows to get really drunk and listen to music. They should dance. But will they dance? Do you think they will dance? This is a real concern for my generation. Are they dancing on Myspace yet? Has that happened yet? Rock shows, unlike raves, have always been about dancing. Since this guy is a DJ, however, it follows that the kids REALLY should dance. Would they please put their beer down for one second and just dance? Stop all that violence you white kids and just dance. Kevin Bacon is in your house, your motherfucking dancing is on.

At the Lit show, people were trying to dance. It was VERY crowded, so it made it kind of difficult for more than a second before someone bumped into you going to the bar, or walking to the bathroom, or, well, just from also trying to dance.

Please also note that Girl Talk is NOT a DJ.

Not a DJ.. noted.. so what is he? What is the show like?

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2006 10:47 AM

He dances behind his laptop. Seriously.

Greg Gillis is NOT a DJ.

DJ Shadow is a DJ because DJ Shadow relies heavily on using samples.

Posted by Tom Violence | July 27, 2006 11:19 AM

so he's a laptop dancer?

Posted by jax | July 27, 2006 11:41 AM

"lapdancer", natch

Posted by nick | July 27, 2006 11:47 AM

I'm totally going to check him out at Mercury -- $10 is nothing, and the album is totally fun. Question though, when I go to the show, I'm going to be watching a guy dancing as he occasionally strokes a key or two on his laptop? Really?

Pitchfork 8.4, who cares?

No, you dance, and he watches you.

Posted by drewo | July 27, 2006 1:13 PM

Yes. He brings his laptop. He dances behind his laptop, etc. I've actually seen him before and this is what he did. I mean really, how else would he recreate his music without a laptop? It's not like he's Hrvatsky who actually makes his own music and plays instruments, etc beyond just having a laptop.

Posted by Tom Violence | July 27, 2006 3:03 PM

he brings the party...not a typical laptop act. sometimes he has dancers etc. very interactive with the crowd. he gets crowdy

Posted by michael | July 27, 2006 3:38 PM

He certainly does put on more of a show than a lot of four-piece rock bands I've seen who just stand around while technicly "playing" their instruments, but don't stare at anything except their instruments and don't interact with the crowd.

do people seriously give a fuck about what TMT has to say? weird.

Posted by blargh | July 29, 2006 3:43 PM

I've never seen people dance harder than at a girl talk show. His live shows make night ripper seem like wedding music and the last thing you'll be doing is calmly watching some dude click around on his laptop. It's crazy

Posted by Thomas | August 4, 2006 12:03 AM

girl talk shows are rowdy. it is always really crowded and ppl are trying to dance but it ends up like a giant mass pushing each other around. he def. brings the party though

Greg is the truth!! I will be the wasted tall guy sweating and dancing my heart out. Come see Girl Talk and leave it all on the dance floor!! 100 nerds bumping and grinding with the slim and sexy. Delicious
