Help JP pick his wedding DVD songs

Wedding SongsJP, regular reader and one-time contributer, needs our help..

I am getting married next week and for my video, the videographer asked us to for 5 songs for our DVD. Well I found this to be just as difficult as choosing who to invite to my wedding. I get to choose 3 of the 5 songs, my fiance the other 2. If you or the readers can offer some suggestions that would be awesome. My profile on myspace has some of the bands that I like along with genres.
So far, I would think a song that has a meaningful lyrics, good "slow-mo" music, and some energy would be fit. Yet not many songs contain all these elements. I am fan of the artists on your website as you know, but I wonder if others can bring something to the table. Thanks a lot

Throw your suggestions in the comments (or if that doesn't work you can always message him at MySpace).

"And you didn't even notice
When the sky turned blue
And you couldn't tell the difference
Between me and you
And I nearly didn't notice
The gentlest feeling"

Bloc Party - Blue Light

Years ago, I attended the wedding of one family friend. The song she and her groom selected for their first dance as husband and wife was U2's "With or Without You." They eventually divorced.

Punk Rock Girl -- The Dead Milkmen

Some of these are maybe too rootsy for the readership. But they're good songs regardless.

Picture In A Frame- Tom Waits (one of the all-time great love songs)
Look For Me As You Go By- Innocence Mission
One By One- Wilco/Billy Bragg
Harvest Moon- Neil Young (thought Cassandra Wilson has a great version too)
Cadillac Diamond- Dominic Moore
I Will Keep The Bad Things From You- The Damnwells
Fresh Feeling- The Eels
Here We Go- Jon Brion (maybe a little too honest)
Communication- The Cardigans (melancholy)
God Only Knows- The Beach Boys
Don't Walk Alone- Tim Easton
Fisherman's Blues- The Waterboys

I recommend Prince, maybe "I would die 4 u" or something along those lines.

Posted by Jeff | July 18, 2006 2:04 PM

I second paul's nomination of Eel's Fresh Feeling. Billy Bragg an Wilco's Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key is nice too.

I concur with the person who recommended True Love Waits. I would suggest the following songs as well:

Stars - Tonight (beautiful song, lyrics not as appropriate)
Badly Drawn Boy - Magic in the Air (faster tempo but sweet song)
Jose Gonzalez - Heartbeats (The Knife Cover)

The lovely music exceeds the words. And the words are perfect....

"Born" by Over the Rhine:

Pour me a glass of wine
Talk deep into the night
Who knows what we'll find

Intuition, deja vu
The Holy Ghost haunting you
Whatever you got
I don't mind

I was born to laugh
I learned to laugh through my tears
I was born to love
I'm gonna learn to love without fear

Put your elbows on the table
I'll listen long as I am able
There's nowhere I'd rather be

Secret fears, the supernatural
Thank God for this new laughter
Thank God the joke's on me

I was born to laugh
I learned to laugh through my tears
I was born to love
I'm gonna learn to love without fear

We've seen the landfill rainbow
We've seen the junkyard of love
Baby it's no place for you and me

I was born to laugh
I learned to laugh through my tears
I was born to love
I'm gonna learn to love without fear

Pour me a glass of wine
Talk deep into the night
Who knows what we'll find

Put your elbows on the table
I'll listen long as I am able
There's nowhere I'd rather be

I was born to laugh
I learned to laugh through my tears
I was born to love
I'm gonna learn to love without fear

Hey everybody, thanks again, how about a tune from Editors, Interpol or REM, any thoughts?

Posted by Jp | July 19, 2006 4:22 PM

Editors - Dust in the Sunlight
"A promise is made in good faith, it means everything. You mean more to me each day and you mean everything, everything."

The end gets a little intense however.

Of course there's always REM's Shiny Happy People!

Posted by jerry | July 19, 2006 4:52 PM

REM - fall on me

maybe?

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2006 8:45 AM

rem:
"nightswimming"
"strange currencies"
"at my most beautiful"

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2006 9:34 AM

How about 'Time To Slow Down' by Editors - and 'Laughing' by R.E.M.

Random trivia for today - Food Network guy Alton Brown was the director of photogrpahy on the R.E.M. video for 'The One I Love' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alton_brown

Posted by dave | July 20, 2006 11:13 AM

Also if you're a fan of Snow Patrol you may want to check out Reindeer Section, a 'scot super group' featuring Gary from SP and guys from Mogwai, the Fannies, Idewild, Arab Strap, B&S. Try their song 'Grand Parade' or 'I'll Be Here' (although that song may be about cheating, like just about all of Gary Lightbody's songs)

Posted by dave | July 20, 2006 11:18 AM

REM? What's the Frequency, Kenneth? of course. "Don't fuck with me, uh-huh."

So what songs did you select, Jp? You said you were going to post them here the same night that BV put this blog entry up. You'd better be true to your word when you give it to your wife, son.

Posted by Dan Rather | July 20, 2006 1:15 PM

if you wanna be happy for the rest of your life - boy least likely to. its a great song ! really. and pretty much fits with your description.
