Jeff Mangum sang with the Instruments @ Cake Shop
MANGUM & THE INSTRUMENTS @ CAKE SHOP (via Pitchfork)

I definitely don't get to everything I mean to post on this site. One such item I meant to give you a heads up on was the Elephant Six-related Instruments tour that hit Cake Shop in NYC on Friday night (July 21, 2006). For that, I'm sorry, because Pitchfork has since found out that Jeff Mangum made another surprise stage appearance at the initmate basement show (after making an appearnce in the audience of the Os Mutantes show earlier in the night):
During the Instruments' set, Mangum joined the band for one song. According to my friend Mike Noble, who supplied the information about both the Os Mutantes and Cake Shop shows, "Mangum sat in with the Instruments on a song (er, stood in, sang in his loud I-don't-need-no-microphone way, wordlessly chanting."
Optical Atlas heard from someone else at the show:
"...there were only two dozen or so people in the room, many of whom were members of Elf Power, Apples, et al.--but a certain Mr. Mangum joined the Instruments on stage at the Cake Shop last night for a single song, toward the end of the set. It was 'When the Stars Shine,' I believe. I snapped a couple of blurry camera pics of the event..."
This is NOT A HOAX (I think).

i loved nmh but i don't see why pitchfork has to write a news story for its 80,000 daily readers just because mangum does backing vocals on one song. it's just kind of...uncomfortable.

who cares about jeff magnum we have Ramesh! more ramesh! MORE MORE MORE!
Posted by hmmm | July 24, 2006 10:24 PM
he sang with them at soundfix, too. there were only about five people there, and i don't think anyone even realized who it was. it was sort of peculiar.

ok I think we've have enough of blogs copying blogs to get stories...its a little silly . Regarding Mangum I dont think everything he does should be newsworthy however great NMH were..maybe oneday he'll again give us something substantial to discuss. Until then , just let the guy sing with his friends because he likes to sing with his friends for no other reason because it makes him happy

omg thanks for the news! this is so exciting! .....and in response to the naysayer, why bother posting if you dont care for the news bit. there are thousands of other blogs on the internet to look at, and for some reason you still end up here. maybe its bc u like 9 out of 10 BV posts? so when he makes one post that you dont feel is newsworthy, keep it to yourself, bc its HIS SITE!
and i am being sincere about being excited about this.. jeff magnum is great, maybe (hopefully) posts like this will encourage him to start preforming (semi) regularly again.

Why would you apologize for this? Are you in competition with Pitchfork and/or other blogs or something? That's the stupidest fucking thing I've ever seen. It's sad that you think there's value in being 'first' to 'report' something, as if you were an actual journalist.

He was apologizing for not listing the show. People use this blog as a calendar of sorts for local shows he didnt talk about it. Since it seems to be big news that I showed up there he's just apologizing for not giving his readers the information about the show so they could have maybe attended and been witness to me harmonizing with some dudes.
kisses bitches,
Jeff

>>as if you were an actual journalist.
True that. I found out about this show ahead of time over at the NYTimes. Also, UPN 9 announced it, right before their segment on the health benefits of coffee.
Real journalists reporting real news.
>>we've have enough of blogs copying blogs to get stories...its a little silly.
Oh, the MSM never (ever) do this.
The reason for redundancy is simply because it's not possible to check all the outlets of information available; whether it be a/v or print, this blog or that blog.

Well said, Ernie.
By the way (to the unnamed coward), what makes one an actual journalist? I read BV every day for music news, and I don't know what I'd do without it.

youre all a bunch of losers
Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2006 9:23 AM
ha. this isn't even effin' 'news.' i feel sorry for the instruments. their show only gets mentioned because jeff mangum sang harmony on one song. this is second-rate star fucker chatter.
Posted by stp | July 25, 2006 9:50 AM
what does that mean "pitchfork has since found out?" Seems as though that pfork story had a legitimate source. comment seems terribly errogant and transparently embarassing.
Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2006 10:38 AM
Why all the hostility? If the " second-rate star fucker chatter" doesn't appeal to you, then why bother commenting? The man just loves music, give him a break. No one's forcing you to read this blog. Can't we all get along? Geez.

it's not hostility, geez. i like the instruments, and it's sad that their show is basically only worthy of a post because j.m. sang one effin' song with them. there, i spelled it out again for you. and you criticizing my comment works the same way; no one forced you to read it. i would never 'get along' with someone who thinks that criticism is unacceptable. hypocrite.

thank you for posting this. i appreciated it.

Calling something "is second-rate star fucker [sic] chatter" is hostility, stp, as is your name-calling. Your response is so defensive you come off like you can dish it out, but you can't take it; perhaps people find themselves unable to 'get along' with you find it because your critiques are unconstructive and insult-ridden.
Here, try this: "It's a shame this is only 'news' because of Mangum's appearance. The Instruments are a good band, you should check them out."
Or, you can sit back and enjoy that a band you like is getting some attention they wouldn't have otherwise have gotten. "The Instruments are good, with or without Mangum. You should check them out."

(Obvs the "is" should have been left out of that first quote.)
Posted by J | July 25, 2006 12:32 PM
don't know what's worse -- posting about magnum performing with a shit band for one song, or for thinking that you're the only person in the world that knows about things like this.

i think we've forgotten about what's really important here: ramesh

"" "what does that mean "pitchfork has since found out?" ""
that means Pitchfork found out that Jeff Mangum sang at the show and reported it. You're reading way too into it.
Posted by brooklynvegan | July 25, 2006 1:03 PM
sorry, j, but i don't like putting a positive spin on gossip, and pointing out the hypocrisy in the post by anonymous is not 'name-calling.' what did i 'dish out,' and to whom, to anonymous? has dr. phil really 'galvanized' our society this severely? how alarming.
Posted by stp | July 25, 2006 1:05 PM
Thanks for the post, I always love to hear about what's going on with Jeff Mangum as well as The Instruments. PS- the cupcakes @ Cake Shop are divine ( but prolly not vegan) :) What a great idea for a venue-record store, cupcakes, and rock!

you people need to chill out! this is a blog about nyc concerts and this one happened to be a special one.

nice try Lily, but we're having a derailment party in here. stay on topic (and by that I mean *off* topic).
[kidding, of course]

Are you serious? The cupcakes are Cake Shop are of the standard supermarket Betty Crocker variety. Not saying they are bad, but there is nothing special about them. The place on Rivington across from the Johnsons is fantastic.

Just saying, I enjoyed mine. I will totally hit up the other joint though..thanks..
Haha, oh well. I tried Jerry! ;)
