Merauder playing CBGB | RIP SOB (Javier Carpio)

Something I've been meaning to post for a while: "Former MERAUDER (and Subzero) guitarist Sob (real name: Javier Carpio) passed away this past weekend at the age of 33. A founding member of the acclaimed New York-based metal/hardcore act, Sob played on all three of the band's albums — 1996's "Master Killer", 1999's "5 Deadly Venoms" and 2003's "Bluetality" — which were released through the Century Media label. Funeral services will be held Tuesday (May 2) at Schafer Funeral Parlor in Brooklyn, NY at 2-5 p.m. and 7-10 p.m. (both EST)." [from Blabbermouth - May 1st, 2006]
MERAUDER 2006 TOUR DATES
8/27 - New York NY @ CBGB's w/ All Out War, Poison Proof, Backlash, Dynamo, Outburst
9/15 - Latham NY @ Saratoga Winners
Below is a photo I found of the DMS crew that includes SOB looking more (than the photo above) the way I remember him....

brooklynvegan, who do you think your audience is to write about all of this hardcore/metal stuff? if someone who is exactly the type of person that would be into this blog because they like phoenix and neutral milk hotel and the futureheads but had never read it before and stumbled upon it today, they would never give brooklynvegan a second glance. come on, pander to your base.

Anonymous,
Take a look at some of Brooklynvegan's past posts there has always been coverage of hardcore/metal music, even though it might not have been as front and center as recent posts. Musical diversity is a good thing, plus notice what all these threads have in commmon. (Hint: CBGB's is closing soon.)

I disagree - I like the typical BV indie band posts but the hardcore posts are great too. Arcade Fire one day, Madball the next - sounds good to me.
This show is going to be brutal. I've been waiting a long time to see Merauder, it's a shame SOB won't be there.

i remember when merauder were about to take the stage at coney island high. they usually had the big chugga chugga metal hardcore types just getting crazy. all of a sudden, these old folks walk straight up to the stage since the pit was empty. a bunch of us just took them by the hand and ushered them back out right before they started so they wouldnt get hit with some boots...it was funny as hell.

i grew up listening to hardcore and punk rock and now i listen to a lot of indie stuff. i think it's great to have hardcore posts. thanks BV!

I totally disagree with the first comment. I was just thinking yesterday how great it was that BV posted the HC/Metal stuff. If made me think that BV probably has a similar music fan history as me and probably many of the readers of the blog. 10-15 years ago the only "alternative" bands that would come anywhere near where I was raised were hardcore and straight edge bands (mainly because I grew up in the home club of Earth Crisis).
It was through that network that I, and most of my friends, were exposed to other music (pre-blogs and the internet it was strictly a word of mouth distribution system). These hardcore bands (and probably some ska) were the only ones willing to build a network of small venues in the North East, in some out of the way places.
So even if we have "matured" to the point of not listening to some of these bands some of us still recall foundly our introduction to the music scene. In that respect, I think BV is pandering to its base.
(Side note: can we all agree on a moritorium on the generic "neutral milk hotel" reference? Face it, we all discovered that record well after they were no longer playing and you were probably totally playing an Everclear of Local H record on loop when NMH were at their peak. It is great they are getting some well deserved name dropping due to one "perfect 10" review, but face it, if as many people who drop the name were really into that band then that record would have broken "Dark Side of the Moon"'s record for consecutive weeks on the Billboard chars.)

I only had Master Killer....great record. Soon after that I kinda gave up on hardcore. Anyone get the other records? How are they? More of the same?

I agree with Tim 100%.
I like that BV doesn't pretend we were all born listening to indie rock in the cradle. It's not like he covers every shitty current hardcore band or anything, just a few older bands that some of us used be into and may still be interested in hearing about.

The first poster is so wrong it's not even funny.....I think it's excellent that BV is posting about hardcore.....in an age where your typical "indie" band has NO INDIE ETHICS whatsoever it's refreshing to read about a scene that is about more than Pitchfork reviews and dreaming of playing a sold out Bowery Ballroom show one day. I am a 33 year old who works in this putrid music industry and personally I have gotten back into HC over the last couple of years, mainly I think, as an escape from inane, inconsequential, unthreatening, meaningless indie rock.
More Hardcore please.

I was a girlfriend of SOB's from back in the day. I was so very sorry to hear of his passing.
He always used to play his guitar for me, and I always knew his band would make it. I haven't seen him in about 11 years, but I'll miss him very much.
My deepest sympathies to Ana, Tabatha and the rest of Javier's family, friends and bandmates.
R.I.P. SOB. Love, Irene
