Mew @ Hiro Ballroom, NYC | pics

Stream Mew's album this week at AOL Music.

Mew @ Hiro Ballroom

Except for two painfully cheesy songs, I loved Mew last night (July 26, 2006) @ Hiro Ballroom. The show was part of the Danish band's first U.S. tour. Hiro Ballroom was pretty filled up and happy (last time they were in NYC was 2003 @ Mercury Lounge - thx anon). Anna the contest winner also wrote in to say she thought the show was awesome. Try not to miss them if you're going to see Bloc Party. They're opening.

BUT I MISSED ANTONY
It was a painful decision to see Mew actually. It meant missing Antony @ Warsaw, but I successfully overcame my Antony addiction (the treatment is working) and went with my 'flavor of the month' instead. I'm happy I did.

Hopefully Mew will make it to the midwest one day. Chicago would welcome them with open arms.

is the "Are You My Lady" song one of the painfully cheesy ones? I am already cringing at the thought of hearing that one in a few hours at Stone Pony. But once I found out they are Danish I gave some allowance for 'lost in translation' situations...

Actually the "Are you my lady" song was one of my favorites . . . yeah the lyrics were cheesy but the song itself was beautiful. I kind of had to ignore the words sometimes throughout the night. Overall an awesome show though.

"i saw Mew play at the Mercury Lounge...I think it was March 2003"

Oh cool, thx. They thanked the crowd for being there last night and said it was their "first U.S. tour" so I wasn't sure if that really meant they hadn't been here or they just hadn't toured.

Nice. thanks for posting. I'll check them out tonight then opening for Bloc Party.

this is not their first tour. they played mercury in 2003 or so.

last night's show was really amazing. i am a huge fan of the album but was totally taken aback by how well they played. their sound is really hard to pull off live too, so doubly impressive. anyone else get annoyed but that fucking ape person constantly taking pictures of his friends while facing back into the crowd and blinding everyone else?

pretty sure the band would know whether this is their first US tour or not

I was just glowing after the Mew show last night. The venue was really gorgeous although drink prices there are atrocious! I managed to get a booth which was extra snazzy as the doors were at eight and they did't get on till nearly nine. They played a great mix of songs from the last two albums including the awesome although out of season "She Came Home for Christmas" (I prefer Frengers to the new album) and the animation backing the band gave me plenty to have nightmares about later. I hope they find some success here- they could do at least as well as MUSE one would guess.

hey, for anyone wondering, Mew is scheduled to go on at 6:15 at McCarren Pool on Saturday.

I think antony's voice is very unique and he's a great performer, but why are people so obsessed with him, the song writing is really weak and the melodies pretty so so

I mean, it was nice and all but it's hardly anything revelatory

Painfully cheesy? I think Mew's songs are pretty incredible, and their command of English rivals many North Americans'.
