Os Mutantes played Webster Hall
OS MUTANTES @ WEBSTER HALL (by the NY Times)

"Forty years after Os Mutantes got started in Brazil, this band played its first American concert on Friday night at Webster Hall. And for the length of its set, the psychedelic 1960’s were back: the 1960’s of playful ambitions, blithe eclecticism, virtuoso silliness and lighthearted but genuine rebellion." [NY TIMES]

It was a really great (and sweaty) show. Once they straightened the sound out after the first song, the band was on a non-stop roll. Much of the crowd (ex-pat Brazilians, visitors?) were singing along the whole time. I always like it when the older musicians are teamed up with younger players (as was the case with the 10-person strong band on Friday) - the younger players can bring a nice tension to the music. The band were in great spirits - lots of smiles and sincerity coming from the stage.
The Times piece says Chicago is the only other show, but if the tour t-shirts that were on sale are anything to go by, they've added a handful more dates throughout the country.

Didn't they play about 3 years ago? Or was that just Tom Ze (sp?) with Tortoise?

Any word in who is still in the band for next week's show? Any other comments about the Webster Hall show?
