Scalper convention ("Ticket Summit") happening now in Las Vegas
THEIR PITCH: "Ticket Summit is a secondary ticket industry conference and trade show. It will host a consortium of experts and leaders within the ticket community, offering a chance to establish and foster relationships valuable to your business.
Interactive forums and expert panels will educate and enhance your industry knowledge, while the trade show floor’s exhibitors and product demonstrations give a glimpse of the future of the ticketing industry."
Ticketmaster, Telecharge, eBay, American Express, Fandango, Live Nation, and Yahoo are chillin' with companies like (scroll down) The Ticket Wiz, Tickets4AnyEvent, Totally Tickets, and AllBestSeats at Las Vegas' Venetian Hotel as we speak.

None of the corporate suits show up to this thing. They just pay a bunch of homeless guys $5 to go and take notes for them.

As a ticket broker, I find Brooklyn Vegan to be an invaluable resource for news about hot shows in New York.

What would be the best way to eliminate ticket scalping?
Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2006 10:32 AM
To stop having concerts.
There is no way to eliminate ticket scalping.

will call only, limit two, no re-entry. that makes scalping nearly impossible.

Scalping shouldn’t be eliminated and should be made completely legal. Why is a ticket any different from a piece of jewelry, a carton of milk, or anything else? It is a proven economic fact that in states where scalping is legal, ticket resale prices actually go down. Supply & demand is a wonderful thing.
What should be a major criminal offense is the siphoning of tickets from the box offices and promoters to the scalpers before the public has a chance to get their hands on them. I have no problem with scalping if they get their tickets through the same means as the general public. The scalper was being proactive to get that ticket while someone else was being lazy.
I do have a major problem with the exorbitant fees that the Ticketmaster monopoly places on every ticket. Quite often tickets are not put on sale at the venue box office until the day after ticket sales start, which means there is no alternative to using Ticketmaster if you want to make sure the show you want to see doesn’t get sold out.

...a piece of jewelry, a carton of milk?...if someone went into a supermarket when it opened bought all the milk, then set up shop in parking lot selling it for double, that is just as wrong as if someone met the milk truck driver a block away from the store, bought all the milk then set up shop selling it for double, people aren't lazy, ticket brokers are just evil, there is no way to "legalize" this practice, supply and demand is great, false demand by buying either something you don't want or don't need more than one of is exploitative whether it's legal or not, again it's EVIL

if you buy from scalpers, you're letting yourself be exploited, and you deserve it.
if you can't control yourself by refusing to pay more than a reasonable price for a concert ticket, you deserve to be taken advantage of.
scalping just gives the people what they want.
the people who hate it do so because they don't like being reminded of how stupid they are.

"if you buy from scalpers, you're letting yourself be exploited, and you deserve it.
if you can't control yourself by refusing to pay more than a reasonable price for a concert ticket, you deserve to be taken advantage of."
Exactly. People that use scalpers are only encouraging the practice.

Problem is, especially with advances in technology over the last 8 years, it is so easy for scalpers to buy tickets. For shows that are guaranteed to sell out (especially shows for the U2s and Pearl Jams of the world), real fans are lining up at the box office window or waiting at the computer at 10:00 AM on the on-sale date and still getting fucking hosed.
